A simple statistical method for classifying handwritten numerals has been explored. Numerals have been dealt within segmented form. A pseudo-distance function has been defined between handwritten numerals and each numeral has been classified based on its distance from those in the reference set. This method, and its obvious variants, are studied on the basis of their performance on a data-set of moderate size (95 observations). The results suggest that this method may be considered in recognition of handwritten numeric characters.

Fixed point technique is used to establish some new existence results of solutions for the AGV EP in noncompact generalized convex spaces. for this resaon, first a fixed point theorem is established in noncompact generalized convex spaces. Next, some new generalizations of Tarafdar's fixed point theorem are obtained in noncompact generalized convex spaces. By applying the fixed point theorems, some new existence theorems of solutions for the AGV EP are proved in noncompact generalized convex spaces. As consequences, some recent known results in topological vector spaces are obtained under much weaker assumptions.

The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a rectangular waveguide containing a thick iris is considered for its complete solution by reducing it to two suitable integral equations, one of which is of the first kind and the other is of the second king. These integral equations are solved approximately, by using truncated Fourier series for the unknown functions. The reflection coefficient is computed numerically from the two integral equation approaches, and almost the same numerical results are obtained. This is also depicted graphically against the wave number and compared with thin iris results, which are computed by using complementary formulations coupled with Galerkin approximations. While the reflection coefficient for a thin iris steadily increases with the wave number, for a thick iris it fluctuates and zero reflection occurs. The number of zeros of the reflection coefficient for a thick iris increases with the thickness. Thus a thick iris becomes completely transparent for some discrete wave numbers. This phenomenon may be significant in the modelling of rectangular waveguides.

The equation of continuity, the moment equations first and then by applying the method of perturbation technique. The expressions for the fluid velocity, temperature profile and skin-friction are obtained. The effects of Prandtl number, Grashof number, magnetic parameter and the variable permeability of porous medium on the velocity and temperature profile are discussed and shown graphically.

Measures theory to solve a wide range of a system of nonlinear equations in minimum time. First, by defining an error function has been used. The mentioned suystem has been transformed to an optimal control problem. The new problem is modified into one consisting of the minimization of a linear functional over a set of radom measure; then an optimal measure is obtained which is then approximated by a finite combination of atomic measures and the problem converted to an infinite-dimensional linear programming. The infinite linear programming is approximated to a finite-dimensional linear programming. Then by using the solution of the latter problem an appoximate solution for the original problem is obtained. Furthermore, a path from the initial point of the system of the nonlinear equations to the approximate solution of the system is obtained in minimum time.

Adaptive dessigns are sometimes used in clinical trials with a goal to allocate a larger number of patients to the better treatment in course of the trial under the assumption of homogeneous entering patients, an approach of interval estimation to the treatment difference is suggested. The existing approach is the conditional interval estimation which is design independent under the homogeneity of patients. Design dependent confidence intervals which is reasonably different under different adaptive design have been suggested. For the purpose of illustration three adaptive designs have been considered, one is the well known randomized play-th-winner rule, and two new allocation rules. These adaptive designs have been compared with a deterministic allocation rule which can be interpreted as the pairwise allocation. Finally the method for all the designs using some real life data set on bladder cancer have been illustrated.

A comparison of results with those available in literature shows an excellent agreement.

The effect of an externally applied mangnetic field on pulsatile flow has been considered in constricted arteries. The physiological constriction know as stenosis in humans has been modelled. The leading equations are modelled via the Navier-Stokes equations. Analytical approximations are made at specific locations and the numerical results for the stream function and vorticity are obtained using the Galerkin technique of the finite element method. The accuracy of the numerical solutions of the model ws satisfactority tested against straight tubes wihtout constriction. The results obtained for the velocity and shear stess on the wall are displayed graphically and the effect of the magnetic field discussed quantitatively.
