The disc having variable thickness and made of transversely isotropic material yields at a less pressure as compared to disc made of isotropic material. Transversely isotropic disc requires high percentage increase in pressure to become fully plastic from initial yielding as compared to isotropic material.

Finds out the impact of acquired immunity on the transmission dynamics of schistosoma species. Highly endemic areas in which people are already exposed to infection were considered. The rates of parasite establishment or survival within the human host are dependent on the accumulated past experience of infection. It was found out that as the worm burden increases, the immunity builds up because of the prolification of the T-cells within the human body. This immunity retards the growth of the immature worms and kills the mature ones. The worm burden attains peak in the ages 15-30 years and thereafter begins to decrease in old age. As the worm burden decreases, the prolification of T-cells is reduced and thus the immunity level declines. This generally occurs in old age when these people are less exposed to a pathogen.

Presents a numerical study of the characteristics of laminar boundary layer free convection along a frustum of cone with a rough surface immersed in a quiescent Newtonian fluid. This surface, described by a sinusoidal profile, is transformed by a homotopic transformation, into a plane plate. The boundary layer equations are solved, using an implicit finit difference scheme and the Gauss-Seidel method, to obtain velocity and temperature profiles, stress coefficient and Nusselt number. Results, including the evolutions of velocity, temperature, stress coefficient as well as the Nusselt number of the boundary layer are presented. The effects of the amplitude of the roughness, the Rayleigh number on the local and mean Nusselt number are also studied. Results show that the increasing of the amplitude tends to decrease the heat transfer and the stress coefficient.

Weapon assignment problem has been modelled as a nonlinear integer programming problem. The problem is to assign weapons to the targets to maximise the optimum-target damage value. There are constraints on various types of weapons available and on minimum number of weapons by types to be assigned to various targets. The objective function is nonlinear, the constraints are linear in nature, and the decision variables are restricted to be integers. The results obtained by Bracken and McCormick¹ should not be applied to solve the problem of weapon assignment to target to maximise the optimum target damage value, because firstly, the results violate the constraints, and secondly, instead of using the integer programming techniques, the crude method of rounding off has been used to obtain the solution. In the study, the I-GRST algorithm developed by Deep and Pant has been used to solve the weapon assignment problem. The results obtained are better than the results obtained by Bracken and McCormick and also do not violate any constraints.

Estimation of quantiles when data are generated from ranked set sampling has been cosidered. A new estimator is proposed and is shown to have a smaller asymptotic variance for all distributions. It is also shown that the optimal sampling strategy is to select observations with one fixed rank from different ranked sets. Both the optimal rank and the relative efficency gain with respect to simple random sampling are distribution-free and depend on the set size and the given probability only. In the case of median estimation, it is analytically shown that the optimal design is to select the median from each ranked set.

Application of Bayesian inference to quantile regression has been illustrated. Bayesian inference regards unknown parameters as random variables, and an MCMC algorithm to estimate the posterior densities of quantile regression parameters has been described. Parameter uncertainty is taken into account without relying on asymptotic approximations. Bayesian inference revealed effective in the application to the wage structure among working males in Britain between 1991 and 2001 using data from the British Household Panel Survey. Looking at different points along the coditional wage distribution uncovered important features of wage returns to education, experience and public sector employment that would be concealed by mean regression.

In many organizations, recruitment of personnel is made when the number of vacant positions due to wastage (exit) of employees reaches a threshold, say N or when there is an expansion of the organizations that takes place T years after the last recruitment, whichever occurs first. This is called a Bivariate recruitment policy or more specifically (N, T) recruitment policy. In this paper, such an organization is considered and an optimal (N,T) recruitment policy is obtained. This concept is analogous to theidea of replacement policy for a reparable system in Reliability theory. This is a new attempt of using the notions of Reliability theory in the field of manpower planning applied with appropriate changes. The idea developed would be of much use to an organization in guiding it to decide when to go in for a recruitment drive to fill up vacancies in the place of westage and vacancies that are created for expansion of the oganization with a view to minimize the long run average cost incurred. An hypothetical example is discussed to highlight the importance and applicability of the model.

Moving meshless methods are a new generation of numerical methods for time-dependent PDFs, specially tailored to handle shocks or regions with large gradients. These methods link the moving finite element method (MFR) with meshless methods, where instead of hat functions, bases derived from anuy meshless methods can be used. An initial distribution of mesh points is found using a suitable monitor function based on the equidistribution principle. A penalty is appended to the energy functional to prevent high mesh velocity and collisions of nodes. A decreasing function of the distance between particles has been employed as the viscosity function. A modified version of an algorithm developed earlier, the Moving element-free petrov-galerkin viscous method (MEFPGVM), which combines moving finite element (MFE) and element free Galerkin (EFG) mehtods, along with initial mesh equidistribution. Numerical solutions for the 1-D Burgers' as Korteweg-de vries equations demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical approximations.

Pattern classification techniques have been employed successfully to identify the symmetric cipher systems in the cipher text only attack scenario. It has been described how the cryptanalyst can eliminate the possibility of different class of ciphers and pin point the most probable type of cipher system used for the cipher text to be analyzed. These state-of-art sophisticated and highly reliable machine learning tools reduce the complexity domain of a cryptanalyst in terms of work factor to a very great extent. The methodologies adopted for searching the underlying pattern (features) from the cipher text and using them for identification of the type of cipher systems have been described. The techniques developed have been effectively used for recognition of character coding schemes from encrypted bit stream and also for identification between plain and enciphered bit stream of English messages. New cluster analysis algorithm has been developed for observing the clustering tendencies among the keys of a particular cryptosystem. The relationship between key sequence and crypt sequence has been studied to create partition in the key space.

The concept of Fractile Graphical Analysis (FGA) was introduced by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (see Mahalanobis, 1960). It is of the earliest nonparametric regression techniques to compare two regression functions for two bivariate populations (X,Y). This method is particularly useful for comparing two regression functions where the covariate (X) for the two populations are not necessarily on comparable scales. For instance, in econometric studies, the prices of commodities and people's incomes observed at different time points may not be on comparable scales due to inflation. A smooth estimate of the fractile regression function and its statistical properties has been considered. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimated fractile regression function defined through general weight functions have been proved. Some procedures based on the idea of resampling to test the equality of the fractile regression functions for two different populations studies have been investigated. These methods are applied to some real data sets obtained from the Reserve Bank of India, and this leads to some interesting and useful observations. In course of the investigation many of Mahalanobis' original ideas related to FGA have been reviewed vis a vis some of the key ideas used in nonparametric kernel regresssion.

A class of probability models is introduced which satisfy most of the important properties of the Cauchy distribution. Cauchy distribution and the propbability models corresponding to the ratio of two independently and identically distributed exponential power laws belong to this class. Exponential power laws are generalization of the normal law in robustness studies. In a similar manner, the probability models considered can be treated as a generalization of the Cauchy model. Various properties of this class of probability models are studied. The Cauchy distribution has been characterised by the property that if X has a Cauchy distribution with location parameter θ and scale parameter σ, then X =^d Y + 1/aX+b' where a and b are constants, Y has a Cauchy distribution independent of X and +^d denote distribution like.

The theory of generalized thermo-elasticity of type II without energy dissipation is employed to solve the problem of determination of temperature, deformation and stress in an infinite isotropic elastic solid having time-dependent distributed heat sources. The solutions are derived by the use of Laplace transform on time and Fourier transform on space. Discontinuities of temperature field, deformation and stress are studied at the modified elastic and thermal wave fronts and compared with the previous results deduced from classical theory and generalized thermo-elasticity theory with thermal relaxation. It reveals that the thermo-elasticity theory without energy dissipation removes some of the finite discontinuities in deformation, temperature and stress which were not observed in the corresponding problems studied by previous authors, using other generalized thermo-elasticity theories.
