While considering the estimation of regression coefficients in a partitioned weakly singular linear model, Chu, Isotalo, Puntanen and Styan (2004a) introduced a particular decomposition for the Watson efficiency of the ordinary least squares estimator. This decomposition presents the "total" wtson efficiency as a product of three factors. New insight has been given into the decomposition showing that all three factors are related to the efficiencies of particular submodels or their transformed versions. An interesting connection between a particular reduction of the Watson efficiency and the concept of linear sufficiency has been proved. The relation between the efficiency and specific canonical correlations. The corresponding decomposition for the Bloomfield-Watson commutator criterions has been given, a necessary and sufficient condition for its specific reduction has been given.

In program evaluation studies, important hypotheses concerning how a treatment or a social program affects the distribution of an outcome of interest can be tested using statistics derived from empirical conditional quantile processes. Sample and practical tests for verifying these hypotheses have been developed. The critical values for these tests are obtained by subsampling appropriately recentered empirical quantile regression processes. The resulting tests have not only good power and size properties, but also a much wider applicability than the available methods based on Khmaladzation. Of independent interest is also the use of recentering in subsampling, which leads to substantial improvements in the finite-sample power of the tests relative to the canonical (uncentered) subsampling. This can be attributed theoretically to an improvement in Bahadur efficiency that the recentering provides in the testing context. The new inference approach is illustrated through a reanalysis of the Pennsylvania reemployment bonus experiment.

Presents a new heuristic algorithm for solving the problem of constrained redundancy optimization in complex system based on Minimal Cut Set Importance and Subsystem Importance. The heuristics presented after 1980 are based on distinct approaches e.g. Kohda and Inoue (KI) (1982), Shi (1987) and Kim and Yum (KY) (1993). Computational results show that algorithm can give an optimal solution in terms of solution quality and is consistently better than Shi. In some cases, KI algorithm performs some what worse than the proposed one. In comparison to KY algorithm, the algorithm obtained the same solution in most of the cases. In some cases, algorithm obtained less reliability in comparison to KI and KY, but, in such cases, less resources are consumed. Hence, it is believed that the algorithm is an attractive alternative to KI, and KY heuristic algorithms and better than Shi in terms of solution quality.

An interesting mathematical model has been proposed to study the pulsatile flow of blood through a stenosed narrow tube under the influence of periodic body acceleration. The effect of body acceleration on the stenosed tube has been emphasized. Blood is considered as a couple stress fluid. The analytical expressions for axial velocity, flow rate and fluid acceleration have been obtained by applying finite Hankel and Laplace transforms. The velocity variations with different parameters have been shown graphically. The results have been compared with other existing theoretical models and are in good agreement with them. Finally, some biological implications of this theoretical investigation have been indicated.

The effect of finite volume fraction of SPM on axially symmetrical jet mixing of an incompressible dusty fluid has been considered. Assuming the velocity and temperature in the jet to differ only slightly from that of the surrounding stream, a perturbation method has been employed to linearize the basic equations. The linearized equations have been solved by using Hankel transform technique. Numerical computations have been made to discuss the velocity and temperature profiles. It is observed that the effect of finite volume fraction on the magnitude of perturbation velocity and temperature of both fluid and particle is to reduce them significantly in comparison to that of the result obtained by Dutta and Da [1985] where volume fraction of SPM was neglected.
