The airflow through a trachea with mild constriction has been analyzed by characterizing it as a Newtonian fluid. It has been shown that resistance to flow and the wall shear stress increase with the size of the constriction, but these increases are small. The effects of axial velocity diffusion coefficient has also been analyzed for different Reynolds number and slip parameter during light and heavy breathing. The impact of size effects on trachea have been discussed.

Spermathecal complex of Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera: Psychodidae) undergoes histological and physiological changes during its gonotropic cycle. The histochemical study revealed a mucopolysaccharide secretory mass in the spermathecae of the newly emerged sandfly. Sperm competition occurs when two or more males compete to fertilize an ovum in the female reproductive tract. Spermatophores of two or more competing males were deposited at the base of the spermathecal ducts, which originate from the female bursa copulatrix. This suggests that females play a role in sperm displacement, which is defined as any situation in which the last male to mate with a female fertilizes maximum number her eggs. A blood meal ingested by the female for ovary development and egg laying stimulates the release of sperm from the spermatophore. The spermatozoa then migrate to the lumen of the spermatheca. The ultrastructure of spermatozoa comprises a head with double-layered acrosomal perforatorium, an elongate nucleus, and the axoneme with a 9 + 9 + 0 flagellar pattern. This axomene differs from the aflagellate axoneme of other Psychodinae. Morphological changes, such as the casting off of the acrosomal membrane, and histological changes in the spermatophore are also described. Mating plugs that have been described in sandflies appear to be artefacts. Females of P. papatasi may be inseminated more than once during each gonotrophic cycle, and additional inseminations may be necessary for each cycle. The relationships between the volumes of the sperm and the spermatheca were calculated to determine sperm utilization and fecundity of P. papatasi. As the females of P. papatasi mate polyandrously, the anatomical and physiological complexity of the spermathecal complex may be related to post-copulatory sexual selection.

The advent of DNA technology over the recent years has led to the development of molecular markers that are highly precise, convenient and cost effective for detection of polymorphism among individuals and also for individual identification. These molecular marker techniques viz., Restriction fragment length polymorphism, Random amplified polymorphic DNA, Amplified fragment length polymorphism, DNA fingerprinting, microsatellites and the most recent, microarrays are advantageous over other conventional techniques like protein polymorphism and immunogenetic techniques. As these techniques directly assess the sample at the DNA level the probability of their accuracy is much greater. Among these marker systems the ideal marker should have many scorable and highly polymorphic loci with codominant alleles and should be densely distributed throughout the genome. Microsatellite markers meet these requirements and have therefore become the markers of choice for a variety of analyses related to linkage mapping, forensic investigations, paternity and kinship determination and population genetic studies.

Accurate method using composite Gauss-Legendre N-point quadrature formula is presented for solving the nonlinear wave-wave interaction source term in deep waters. This method employs a polar grid in the wavenumber space with a constant geometric ratio λ and uses the scaling relation for the transfer integral. The accuracy of the method can be tested for different λs by increasing N. This increase in λ will help in calculating the nonlinear source term at less number of frequency points, resulting in reduced computation time. Also included the procedure for obtaining the nonlinear results at more number of frequency points. One D nonlinear source term S_nl(f) with results of exact methods, indicates that the present results are comparable and qualitatively in good agreement with Webb-Resio-Tracy (WRT) method in spite of slight differences at higher frequencies. This slight difference is due to different polar grids employed for the input vectors in the present method, whereas they are the same in the WRT method. The present method thus considers possibilities that are not explored in the WRT method.

In the harvesting technique prevailing in Scandinavia, tree stems are converted into smaller logs immediately at harvest. Modern sawmills attempt to operate according to customers' special needs rather than simply minimize production costs. Since the annual production of saw timber in Scandinavia is in tens of millions of cubic meters, proper measurement of the goodness of the bucking outcome is of crucial importance. The outcome of the bucking operation can be considered as a multidimentional tale of tree species, quality grades, prices and length and diameter classes. The prevailing method of measuring the outcome is the so-called Apportionment Index (AI), which is calculated from the relative properties of the observed and target tables. Recently, some statistical properties of the AI have been studied and alternative means of measuring the bucking outcome have been suggested. The definition of AI has been and its limiting properties has been examined.

A different method for classifying benin and malignant melanoma skin lesions from digital images has been presented. The features used for classification were collected from coefficients created by Wavelet decompositions. Wavelet analysis, like Fourier transformation, is used for a number of operations in signal analysis. Images can also be treated as signals with their color values constituting the signal. The mean and variance of wavelet coefficients for a two level decomposition were calculated. The tree structure model utilizes a semantic representation of the spatial-frequency information contained in the skin lesion images including textural information. Results show that the presented method is effective in discriminating melamoma from dysplastic nevus.

For each edge uv, assign the label 1 or 0 according as gcd (ƒ(u), ƒ(V)) = 1 or not. ƒ is called a prime cordial labelling if <157> e_ƒ (0) - e_t (1) <157> ≤ 1 where e_ƒ (i) is the number of edges labeled with i (i = 0, 1). The prime cordial behaviour of some standard graphs and also graphs generated from them have been investigated.

An organisation consisting of two branches where the second branch serves as an inventory between Grade 1 and Grade 2 of the first branch in the context of filling up of the vacancies that arises in Grade 2 is considered. The optimal reserve inventory in the second branch is studied so as to minimize the overall cost incurred. The results are illustrated by numerical examples.
