Dielectric relaxation studies have been carried out in three binary liquid systems namely hexanol, heptanol and octanol with benzene solution. The oscillating frequency of X-band microwave bench is at 9.36 GHz. The orientation of molecular dipoles have been identified by the Kirkwood linear correlation factor (g′). The relaxation time (τ) is obtained by both Higasi's and Cole-Cole method. The dipole moments of the systems are determined by Higasi's and Gopalakrishna's method. The activation energies due to the relaxation process (ΔFτ) and the viscous flow (ΔFη) are calculated.

Effects of non-local thermodynamic equilibirium (non-LTE) condition on emission and hydrodynamics of typical intertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasmas are studied. The average degree of ionization at high temeratures is seen to be much lower compared to the values obtained from Thomas-Fermi scaling or Saha equation for high-Z element like gold. LTE and non-LTE predictions for emitted radiation from laser-driven gold foil are compared with the experiment results and it is seen that non-LTE simulations show a marked improvement over LTE results. The effects of one group and multigroup, LTE and non-LTE approximations of radiation transport on hydrodynamic parameters are studies for laser-driven aluminium and gold foils. It is further seen that non-LTE and multigroup effects play an important role in predicting conversion efficienct of laser light to X-rays.

The kinetic and spectroscopic investigations on complexation of Zn(II) with Er2(GSH)2(H2O)4 1 (GSH = reduced glutathione) to form Er2(GSH)2Zn(H2O)6 complex 2 have been performed at 30°C by following five, 4f-4f sensitive transitions of lanthanide Er(III), 4I15/2 → 4G11/2, 4I15/2 → 4F7/2, 4I15/2 → 2H11/2, 4I15/2 → 4F9/2 and 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 in water as well as in equimolar mixture of DMF and water. Performances of all the five bands were found to be competently sensitive, on the basis of kinetic studies done by following the changes in the intensity (absorbance, molar absorptivity) and intensity parameters (oscillator strength P and Judd-Ofelt Tλ intensity). Kinetics showed first order dependence in terms of concentrations of Zn(II) and complex 1 on the rate of formation of complex 2. In order to support the kinetic and spectroscopic observations, complex 1 and 2 were synthesized also, and were characterized by C, H, N, S and elemental analysis, UV/VIS, NMR and IR techniques. Kinetics, mechanistic and spectroscopic aspects of the complexation reaction are presented and discussed.

Reports deposision of relatively thick (~60 nm) Ge layers on Br-passivated Si(111) substrates by thermal evaporation under high vacuum conditions at room temperature. Ge has grown in a layer-plus-island mode although it is different from the Stranski-Krastanove growth mode observed in epitaxial growth. Both the islands and the layer are nanocrystalline. This appears to be a consequence of reduction of surface free energy of the Si(111) substrate by Br-passivation. The size distribution of the Ge nanoislands has been determined. The Br-Si(111) substrates were prepared by a liquid treatment, which may not produce exactly reproducible surfaces. Nevertheless, some basic features of the nanostructural island growth are reasonably reproducible, while there are variations in the details of the island size distribution.

Zirconium dioxide thin films have been deposited by cw CO2 laser-assisted evaporation on Si(100), quartz and optically polished glass substrates at different substrate temperature. Films were grown in oxygen, under partial pressure. The surface morphology of the films has been observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the structure has been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The optical bandgap has been calculated from transmission spectra, taken in the UV range. The dc dark conductivity has been investigated in the temperature range 30-130 °C. The SEM micrographs show that, the film surfaces are smooth and polycrystalline and grows in a well-alligned columnar structure. XRD observations revealed that, the structure of the films deposited at 250 °C substrate temperature is tetragonal having lattice constants a = 0.5074 nm and c = 0.572 nm. The bandgap evaluated from optical spectra is = 5.25 eV. The dc conductivity shows linear variation with temperature with the experimental temperature range, suggesting an activated process, having single activation energy.

Studies the addition of control terms into the highly efficient CML models and explored the resulting dynamics. Proportional, adaptive proportional and discontinuous non-linear (DNL) control methods were used to derive the control laws. The first method employed occasional proportional feedback. The adaptive method used spatio-temporal feedback control. The DNL method used a discontinuous feedback linearization procedure, and the controller was designed for the resulting linearized system using eigenvalue assignment. These techniques were applied to a modeled vortex dislocation structure in the wake of a vibrating cable in uniform freestream flow. Parallel shedding patterns were achieved for a range of forcing frequency-forcing amplitude combinations studied to validate the control theory. The adaptive proportional and DNL mehtods were found to be more effective than the proportional control method due to the incorporation of a spatially varying feedback gain across the cylinder span. The DNL method was found to be the most efficient controller of the low-order. CML model. The required control lever across the cable span was correlated to the 1/1 lock-on behavior of the temporal circle map.

The non-linear coupling between the two produces two lower hybrid sidebands. The latter, in conjunction with the pump lower hybrid wave, exerts a pondermotive force on the electrons, driving the low frequency dust-acoutic mode. The variations in the charge of the dust due to electron and ion attachment introduce linear damping in the high frequency modes. At high powers, when the growth rate exceeds the frequency of the dust-acoustic mode, the parametric process goes over to a reactive quasimode decay.

Measurements of azimuthal distribution of inclusive photons using the fine granularity pre-shower photon multiplicity detector (PMD) at CERN SPS are used to obtain anisotropy in the azimuthal distributions. These results are used to estimate the anisotropy in the neutral pion distributions. The results are compared with results of charged particle data, both for first order and second order anisotropy. Assuming the same anisotropy for charged and neutral pions, the anisotropy in photons is estimated and compared with the measured anisotropy. The effect of neutral pion decay on the correlation between the first order and the second order event plane is also discussed. Data from PMD can also be used to estimate the reaction plane for studying any anisotropy in particle emmision characteristics in the ALICE experiment at the large hadron collider (LHC). In particular, we show that using the event plane from the PMD, it will be possible to measure the anisotropy in J/ψ absorption (if any) in the ALICE experiment.

Based on general arguments, the in-medium quark propagator in a quark-gluon plasma leads to a quark dispersion relation consisting of two branches, of which one exhibits a minimum at some finite momentum. This results in a vanishing group velocity for collective quark modes. Important quantities such as the production rate of low mass lepton pairs and mesonic correlators depend inversely on this group velocity. Therefore, these quantities, which follow from self energy diagrams containing a quark loop, are strongly affected by van Hove singularities (peaks and gaps). If these sharp structures could be observed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions it would reveal the physical picture of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) as a gas of quasiparticles.

It is possible to substitute relatively large length measurement by far smaller length measurements, by use of "00" grade slip-gauge concept, thereby curtailing temperature-affected (expansion coefficient induced) error, proportionately, and to quite a low level. The suggested technique utilizes the advangtage. Thus, accured and improved refractive index values of various liquid minimum can be obtained because of greater of temperature-affected length measurement errors.

The study of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has of late opened up significant new opportunities for miniaturized mechanical devices based on thin film materials and silicon technology. Their functionality can be increased by joining many elements on a small space. Infrared detector arrays, high-frequency ultrasonic imaging arrays and canti-lever arrays for mass storage applications are examples, of such improvement. An important family of functional materials is ferroelectrics, or more generally polar materials. Their piezoelectricity can be used in sensors, actuators and transducers, while pyroelectricity is used in infrred detectors. The preparation and characterization of ferroelectric thin films for MEMS applications have been deals with. Emphasis is laid on lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and lead calcium titanate (PCT).

Effect of small departures in the graded index profilels of optical fibers on the pulse-widths, field distributions and spot-sizes of LP<^>01 mode has been examined. Expressions for σ-intermodal and - intramodal pulse-widths are obtained for multimose graded fibers having a flat continuation in their index profiles. The field distribution of LP<^>01 mode in single mode nearly parabolic fiber is determined by solving the wave equaiton and near field rms and Petermann - 2 spot-sizes are obtained. The calculated σ-values are found to consistenly increase both with the increase in distortion in a given σ-profile and profile despersion in index profiles with α≥3. For a given ν-number, the distortion effect leads to a decrease in either spot-size; also the rms spot-size is larger in magnitude that Petermann-2 spot-size for a given distortion.

First observations of elliptic flow in Au-Au collisions at RHIC have been interpreted as evidence that the colliding system reaches thermal equilibrium. Discusses some of the arguments leading to this conclusion and show that a more accurate analysis is needed, which the standard flow analysis may not provide. Then presents a new method of flow analysis, based on a systematic study of multiparticle azimuthal correlations. This method allows one to test quantitatively the collective behaviour of the interacting system. It has recently been applied by the STAR Collaboration at RHIC.

The J/ψ production in 158 A GeV Pb-Pb interactions is studied, in the dimuon decay channel, as a function of centrality, as measured with the electromagnetic or, alternatively, with the very forward hadronic calorimeters. After a first sharp variation at mid-centrality, both patterns continue to fall down and exhibit a curvature change at high centrality values. This trend excludes any conventional hadronic model and finds a natural explanation in a deconfined quark-gluon phase scenario.

Calibration of iridium-192 high dose rate (HRD) brachytherapy sources has been comapared by using two independent systems. Two types of calibration systems, well-type chamber (SDS), and field dosimeter (0.6 cc graphite thimble) with nucletron calibraiton jig have been compared. A number of measurement have been performed to calibrate the six iridium-192 sources according to national/international protocol during the clinical half-life of the iridium-192 source. All influencing factors like room-scattering, positional errors ad accuracy of source position etc.have been taken care of, because the accuracy of source posotion itself within applicator can lead to an error of ±1.2

The productions of real photon from quark gluon plasma and hot hadronic matter formed after the nucleus-nucleus collisions at ultra-relativistic energies are discussed. The effects of the spectral shift of the hadrons at finite temperature on the production of photons are investigated. On the basis of the present analysis it is shown that the proton spectrs measured by WA98 collaboration in Pb + Pb collisions at CERN SPS energiescan be explained by both QGP aw well as hadronic initial states if the spectral shift of hadrons at finite temperature is taken into account. Several other works on the analysis of WA98 photon data have also been briefly discussed.
