The EDXRF (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence) technique was applied to the annalysis of head hair from Turkish patients (mothers and babies) mainly from Samsun and neighbouring cities. In this study, head hair of 163 patients were analyzed. Presence of S, CL, K, Ca, Sc, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Y elements were observed qualitatively and concentration of K, Ca, Cu and Zn were measured. the results vary from 0.01% to 2.413.0% for K and from 0.438% to 3.397% for Ca, Cu and Zn values are found to be less than 1%.

A theoritical investigation has been carried out to evaluate the effect of depolarization on the propagation of microwave/millimeter wave in sand and dust storms. The storm is considered to have three main constituents i.e, sand, silt and clay. An equation has been developed for depolarization in which the concept of scattering by dipole as well back scattering has been utilised for this purpose. It has been found that the depolarization and loss due to depolarization caused by dust particles depend directly on orientation of incident beam, frequency and particle density. The results obtained are in good agreement with experimental results reported earlier. This varifies the accuracy of theory developed.

The nutation accompanying the well-known Larmor precession discussed with respect to an inertial frame is now considered in the rotating Larmor frame where the precession is absent and the nutation is therefore fully emphasized. It is shown that , in this frame, the nutating vector generates, in general, what may be called interpenetrating partial cones, the two parts of which merge into a single cone traced twice over, when the orbit of the charged particle changes to a circle-giving an immediate explanation of the discontinuous jump in the nutation frequency to twice its value as the orbit changes continously from an ellipse to a circle.

Studies of dielectric relaxation and ac conductivity relaxation and ac conductivity have been made on three samples of sodium tungsten phosphate glasses over a temperature range of 77-420 K. Complex relative permittivity data have been analyzed using dielectric modulus appraoch. Conductivity relaxation frequency increases with the increase of temperature. Activation energy for conductivity relaxation has also been evaluated. Measured ac conductivity (σ_m(ω) has been found to be higher than σ_dc at low temperatures whereas at high temperature σ_m(ω) becomes equal to σ_dc at all frequencies. The ac conductivity obeys the relation σ_ac(ω) = Aω^s over a considerable range of low temperatures. Values of exponent S are nearly equal to unity at about 78 K and the values decrease non-linearly with the increase of temperature.Values of the number density of states at Fermi level (N(E_F)) have been evaluated at 80 K assuming values of electron wave function decay constant α to be 0.5 (Anstrom)-1. Values of N(E_F) have the order 10²⁰ which are well within the range suggested for localized states. Present values of N(E_F) are smaller than those for tungsten phosphate glasses.

Finite difference method is used to obtain the solution of non-linear boundary value problem arising due to the steady motion of an incompressible second-order fluid (flowing with a small mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow) over a finite ratating disc eclosed within a coaxial cylindrical casing. The resulting equations are converted into a set of difference equations. Starting from the known values of flow functions for small values of the Reynolds number, the solution is extended for larger Reynolds number, by making use of Newton-Raphson Iterative method and Gauss-elimination method. The second-order effects on the velocity components have been investigated in detail in the regions of recirculation for the cases of radial outflow and inflow and illustrated graphically. Such flows are useful in Chemical and Mechnical Industries.

A modal method is used to calculate the two-dimensional sloshing motion of an inviscid liquid in a rectangular container. The full nonlinear problem is reduced to the solution of a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the time varying coefficients in the expansions of the interface and the potential. The effects of capillarity are included in the formulation. The simplicity, generality and power of the method are exhibited not only by recovering the earlier results obtained, for example, by Penney and Price (1), Tadjbakhs and Keller (2) and Faltinsen et al (3), but also by obtaining new and interesting results of the effects of capillarity and shallow depth, which would be difficult to obtain otherwise. For example, it is found that for the initial interface profile considered here parastic capillary waves, borne by the higher number wave modes, are generated for moderate capillarity but disappear for larger values of the parameter. The method can be extended to other simple geometries.

Calorimetric measurement have been done on Te-Bi-Se Glass system for the studies of avriation in the glass transtition temperature T_g and the glass forming ability K_gl with the variation in Bi contents. It is found that the glass transition temperature T₈ increases slightly with the variation of Bi content from 28 per cent to 38 per cent. The values of glass forming ability K_gl are found to decrease with the increase in Bi content. A systematic investigation of crystallization kinetics of Te-Bi-Se Glass system reveals that there is a heating rate dependence of T_g. The results are interpreted using the chemically ordered network model (CONM), which shows an increase in T_g with the increase in average coordination number Z.

The explicit expression fo the long-range stresses of an extrinsic boundary dislocation (FBD) array located at the interface of anisotropic two-phase media are given by using the anisotropic elasticity theory and the boundary conditions. The complex constants D_a⁺ and D^-_o in the expressions are analytically solved. Denoting by a cartesian frame in which OX₃ is taken along dislocation line with OX₂ normal to the interface, the complex constants have been obtained. In this frame, the two media are named as "+" and "-" according to the sign of x₂. A computer program in fortran has been developed and used to calculate the long-range stresses in bicrystals of Si/Si and Cu/Cr.

Exotic decay of some heavy nuclei with Z>100 formed in heavy ion 'cold fusion'reaction were studied taking interacting barrier consisting of Coulomb and proximity potential. Calculated half-life time shows that some modes of decay are well within the present upper limit for measurements (T_1/2<10³⁰s). Cluster formation probabilities are calculated for different clusters within fission mode. It is found that transition from cluster mode to fissionmode take place at mass of the cluster, A2=20 in exotic decay which is comparable with the value A2=16 of Shanmugam et al based on cubic plus Yukawa plus exponential model (CYEM).

Detectors based on emulsions of superheated liquid drops in visco-elastic gels or soft polymers are being used for neutron detection, neutron dosimetry and neutron spectrometry for over two decades. When exposed to energetic radiation, superheated drops are nucleated to vapour bubbles due to the energy deposited in the liquid by the radiation while passing ured either using a passive device which requires no power source, or an active device which counts each drop nucleation electronically. Basic principle of nucleation, measuring devices and methods have also been presented. Recent works on the use of superheated liquid in detecting gamma and other high Z radiation are also mentioned.

The nergy shifts and intensity ratios of different L X-ray components in tantalum elements due to 10 MeV carbon and 12 MeV nitrogen ions are estimated. From the observed energy shifts, the possible number of simultaneous vacancies in M shell are estimated. A comparison of L_α/L_β2,15, L_β1/L_γ1 and γ2,3/L_γ4,4 with the ratios due to Scofield theoretical transiton rates indicate that the number of multiple vacancies in N shell are higher than the vacancies in M and O shell. Employing Larkin's statistical scaling procedure, the number of possible multiple vacancies in N and O shells are estimated quantitatively.

During 2001, SRFQ2 was extensively tested at cryogenic temperature reaching its design performance, i.e., 280 kV inter-electrode voltage (equivalent to 25 MV/m peak surface electrical field) at 7 W dissipated power. Describes the treatments, the main difficulties arisen during the tests, the way they were overcome and the measurement sequences that allowed the characterization fo SRFQ2 behavior. The dielctric relaxation parameters, viz., static dielectric constant, E and relaxation times, have been determined for chlorobenzene-methoanol (CB-MET) mixtures with thirteen different concentrations at three temperatures, viz., 15,25 and 45^o C. The exprimental technique used for work was time domain reflectometry (TDR) in the frequency range of 10 MHz to 20 GHz using the Hewlett Packard HP 54750 sampling oscilloscope. The information regarding hydrogen bonding structural behavior in MET due to CB, DE and DC are obtained by using the theoretical models based on the excess properties. The data suggest that CB and DE are not influenced by hydrogen bonding in MET whereas DC is influenced by the hydrogen bonding mechanism in MET. It appears that the behavior of DC on MET is different from CB and DE in MET.

The bunching system of the ATLAS positive ion injector (PII) has been improved by relocating the harmonic buncher to a point significantly closer to the second stage sine-wave buncher and the injector LIANC. The longitudinal opics design has also been modified and now implys a virtual waist from the harmonic buncher feeding the second stage sine-wave buncher. This geometry improves the handling of space charge for high-current beams, significantly increases the capture fraction into the primary rf bucket and reduces the capture fraction of the unwanted parasitic rf bucket. Total capture and transport through the PII has been demonstrated as high as 80 of the injected dc beam while the population of the parastic, unwanted rf bucket is typically less than 3 of the total transported beam. To remove this small residual parastic component a new traveling-wave transmission-line chopper has been developed reducing both transverse and longitudinal emittance growth from the chopping process.

he Nuclear Science Community in the Unites States has unanimously concluded that developments in both nuclear science and its supporting techonologies make building a world-leading Rare-Isotope Accelerator (RIA) facility for production of radioactive beams the top priority. The RIA development effort involves several US Laboratories (ANL, JLAB,LBNL, MSU, ORNL). The RIA facility includes a CW 1.4 GeV driver LINAC and a 100 MV post - accelerator both based on superconducting (SC) cavities operating at frequencies from 48 MHz. An initial acceleration in both LINACs is provided by room temperature RFQs. The driver LINANC is designed for acceleration of any ion species; from protons up to 900 Mev to uranium up to 400 MeV/u. The novel feature of the driver LINAC is an acceleration of multiple charge-state heavy-ion beams in order to achieve 400kW beam power. Basic design concepts of the driver LINAC are given. Several new conceptual solutions in beam dynamics, room temperature and SC accelerating structures for heavy ion accelerator applications are discussed.

The RIA facility driver LINAC consists of about 400 superconducting (SC)independently phased rf cavities. The LINAC is designed to accelerate simultaneously several charge - state beams to generate as much as 400 kW of uranium beam power. The LINAC beam dynamics is most sensitive to the focusing and accelerating from 0.17 keV/u to 9.4 Me V/u. This section is designed to accept and accelerate two charge states (28 and 29) of uranium beam from an ECR ion source. The pre-stripper section must be designed to minimize the beam emittance distortion of this two-charge-state beam. In particular, the inter-cryostal spaces must be minimized and beam parameters near transitions of the accelerating and focusing lattices must be matched carefully. Several sources of possible effective emittance growth are considered in the design of the pre-stripper section and a tolerance budget is established. Numerical beam dynamics studies include realistic electric and magnetic three-dimensional field distributions in the SC rf cavities and SC solenoids. Error effects in the longitudinal beam parameters are studies.

A resonator controller has been implemented to stabilize the amplitude and phase of rf fiedls in the super-conducting resonators of NSC LINAC. Due to reduced losses these resonators have intrinsic band width of the order of 0.1 Hz at 97 MHz whereas the vibration-induced center frequency changes are of the order of a few tens of hertz. In the control strategy followed, the resonator is made the frequency selective part of an oscillator. The phase lock is achieved by dynamically adding a phase shift in the oscillator. A slow tuner minimizes the slow drifts in the rresonator center frequency. Present the control strategy, implementatin details and performance obtained with this controller.

A high resolution injector system has recently been installed at the Lund 3 MV tandem Pelletron accelerator. The new injector, designed mainly for ²⁶ AI ions, will increase the experimental potential of the Lund AMS facility considerably. High quality energy and mass resolutionis obtained by using a 90^o magnetic analyzer. The injector is equipped with a high intensity sputtering source with a spherical ionizer. A new analytical technique for acceptance calculations as well as PC based computational methods have been used in the design of the ion opitcal system of the new injector. Compared to our old injector system which has a magnetic analyszer with a bending angle of only 15^o , the new system has a more than ten times better resolution. The beam optics of the new system is also better designed to match the accelerator acceptance. In this way the ion transmission from the ion source to the detector, for fifferent ions of interest in our AMS programme, has been increased.

The samples have been cut from the inner walls of the fusion experiments ASDEX-upgrade/Garching and JET/Culham. The tritium content of the samples from JET required a dedicated AMS facility to prevent any contamination of the versatile 3 MV Tandetron. On the basis of an air-insulated 100 kV tandem accelerator equipped with a gas stripper an AMS facility exclusively devoted to tritium depth profiling was installed, tested and used for routine measurements. After additional successful tests employing diamond-like carbon (DLC) stripper foils at this accelerator, another small and compact 100kV tandem accelerator with SF6 insulation and a DLC stripper has been installed at the AMS facility. Results obtained with the different tandem accelerators are presented.

Dielectric constant, loss tan δ and conductivity of PBFCZ glasses are studied against freqencies (in the range 100Hz to 10 KHz) in the temperature range 30°C- 300°C. The rate of increase of dielectric constant and loss tan δ with temperature, decreases with increase in molar percentage of P₂O₅. an attempt has been made to explain the a.c. conduction in these glasses on the basis of Quantum Mechanical Tunelling (QMT) model.

A 2-D multi -wire position sensitive detector for X-ray diffraction and small angel X-ray scattering studies is described. The detector has an active area of 100mm x 100mm and consists of an anode plane with 10 m SS wires at 3mm spacing and a pair of orthogonal cathod readout planes with 25 m SS wires placed at 1.5 mm spacing. The position information is obtained using charge division method and recorded using a laboratory built data acquisition system. The resolution and gas gain was measured for 5.9 ke V X-rays (⁵⁵ Fe-source) as a function of the anode wire voltage and gas pressure. It was observed that the proportional region of the PSD at 100 kPa pressure extended up to a high voltage value of around 1.5kV and it shifted to high values up to 2 kV for gas pressure of 300kPa. The energy resolution improved from 185 (FWHM) to 12 with increase in pressure. The spatial resolution of the PDS also showed improvement, with a value of 1.2mm x1.4 at 300 kPa gas pressure. A maximum gain of 5 x10⁴ is obtained.

The basic properties of nano-structured materials has been reviewed. The possible mechanism behind the particle formation in radio-frequency glow-discharge plasma has been discussed. The emphasis has been given to the oxidation mechanism and kinetics of a-si and a-SiC nanoparticles. The electronic structure of carbon nanotubes which has been one of the major research area has also been considered. It is concluded that some of the peculiar properties exhibited by these nanoparticles and nanotubes can be useful for technological applications.

However, the use of this harmone has raised many controversies regarding its effect on health and reproduction of dairy animals and also the secretion of harmone in milk. Oxytocin triggers off number of actions in the body. The role and importance of his harmone in effective milk removal and its effect on milk composition and health of dairy animals have been discussed.

Reports experimental findings on the radiation characterstics of AMPA with the variation of location of the active device (two terminal Gunn diode) on the microstrip patch antenna.Five rectangular patches are designed at two frquencies of 9.5 and 9.0 GHz. Radiation efficiencies and charcteristics of the patches show the dependence of the position of the active device on the patches. The proper device location has been determined theoretically, which is corroborated through experimental findings.

At the new high flux reactor FRM-II in Munich the accelerator MAFF (Munich accelerator for fission fragments) is under design. In the high neutron flux of 10¹⁰ n/cm²s up to 10¹⁴ neutron-rich fission fragments per second are produced in the 1g U-235 target. Ions with an energy of 30 keV are extracted from the ion source. In the mass seperator two isotopes can be selected. One of the beams is used for low energy experiments, the other one is injected into an ECRIS (or EBIS) for charge breeding to a q/A<128>147<255> 0.16. A gas filled RFQ cooler is used for emittance improvement. The subsequent LINAC delivers beams with an energy ranging from 3.7 MeV/u to 5.9 MeV/u. New IH structures are being developed at the Munich tandem laboratory. A small storage ring is planned in a further stage to recycle the fission fragments. A thin target foil can be placed into this ring, e.g., for synthesis of super-heavy elements. The through-going beam tube has been installed in the heavy water tank of the reactor. Tests of the target ion source in a special oven to test long term stability and safety tests were in progress.

Study the relativistic version of the non-Abelian, longitudinal wave in quark-antiquark plasma reported earlierand also relaxed various approximations they made in their analysis. Both the quark and antiquark dynamics are taken for analysis. The non-linearity arising from non-Abelian field as well as from plasma are included. Hence it is an exact longitudinal mode in relativistic quark-antiquark plasma, relevant to the study of quark gluon plasma. Earlier results are reproduced for non-relativistic and low amplitude oscillations, but are modified for relativistic or large amplitude waves. Further more, the above results are based on just four first-order equations for gauge invariant quantities derived from gauge covariant twelve first-order equations.

A radio frequency quadrupole LINAC has been designed for the VECC-RIB project for an input energy of 1.0keV/u and q/A≥1/16. The output energy will be about 90 keV/u for a 3.4 m long, 35MHz structure. A half-scale cold model of the RFQ hass been fabricated and tested for rf structure design study. The beam dynamics and rf-structure design along with results of the cold model tests will be presented.

The scheme utilises the excisting K=130 room termperature variable energy cyclotron machine as the primary accelerator for the production of RIBs and radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and LIANC modules for the post-acceleration. The design aspects of these post-accelerator LINAC modules are discussed.

Variation-after-projection (VAP) calculations in conjuction with Hartree-Bogoliubov (HB) ansatz have been carried out for A=100-108 molybdenum (Mo) isotopes. In this framework, the yrast spectra with, B(E2) transition probabilities, quadrupole (β₂) and hexadecapole (β4) deformation parameters, moment of inertia (I) and square of cranking frequency (ω² for even-even Mo isotopes have been obtained. The results of the calculation give an indication that it is important to include the hexadecapole -hexadecapole component of the two-body interaction for obtaining various nuclear structure quantities in these Mo isotopes.

The structure and electronic properties of High T_c superconductors are studied and relevance of energy band overlapping to the high T_c of these materials is analysed. Within the BCS frame work a two band model with generalised Fermi surface topologies for a quasi 2D electron gas is developed. Values of the overlapped occupancy parameters for these superconductors are obtained as a function of the ratio R=2Δ₀/k_bT_C and the effective coupling constant λ, within the weak coupling limit. Additionally the typical behaviour of isotopic effect is obtained. The results of this approach are important to the generic understanding of high T_C of superconducting mechanism.

The analysis of resonance of the elliptic disk microstrip antenna excited by a microstrip transmission line is rigorously formulated. Boundary Conditions are enforced on a protion of the microstrip feed line as well as the patch antenna. the integral equation for unknown currents on the antennas and the feed is sloved by applying the Galerkin method of moments in the scaler and vector Mathieu transforms domain. The theoretical resonance frequency of the structure has been derived using Golerkin method and approximately using a perturbation approach.
