Sumarizes the radio occultation (RO) technique for remote sounding of the Earth's atmosphere using the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and GPS receivers on low-Earth orbiting (LEO) satellites. As the LEO satellites rise and set with respect to the GPS satellites, the radio waves from the GPS satellites are refracted by the Earth's atmosphere. Precise measurements of the bending angle of the radio waves are used to derive vertical profiles of atmosperic refractivity, which is a function of electron density in the ionosphere and temperature and water vapor in the stratosphere and troposphere. Results from the GPS/MET,CHAMP and SAC-C RO missions are summarized, and examples of sounding are presented. Analysis of the CHAMP and SAC-C data indicates that approximately 45 of CHAMP and SAC-C retrieved radio occultation profiles reach below 1 km altitude, compared to only 35 for GPS/MET. All missions exhibit a negative refractivity bias in the lower troposphere of between 1 and 2 compared to NWP models. When constrained to the tropics, only about 20 of the CHAMP occultation profiles reach 1 km from the surface. Taiwan's National Space Program Office (NSPO), the University Corporation for Atmosphere Research (UCAR), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and many partners in the university community are developing COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate), a follow- on project for weather and climate, space weather, and geodetic science. COSMIC plans to launch six satellites in 2005. Each satellite will retrieve 400-500 daily profiles of key ionosphere and atmospheric properties from the tracked GPS radio signals as they are occulted behind the Earth limb. The radio occultation sounding data from COSMIC will contribute significantly to atmosphere research, weather forecasting, and climate modeling.

Physico-mechanical properties of rocks are significant in all operational parts in mining activities, starting from exploration to final dispatch of material. Compressional wave velocity (p-wave velocity) and anisotropic hehaviour of the rocks are two such properties for understanding the rock response behaviour under stress conditions. They also influence the brakage mechanism of rock. There are some known methods to determine the p-wave velocity and anisotropy in situ as well as in the laboratory. These methods are cumbersome and time consuring. In the present investigation, artificial neural network (ANN) technique is used for the prediction of p-wave velocity and anisotropy, taking chemical composition and other physico-mechanical properties of rocks as input parameters. Cross-validation technique termed as leaving-one-out is used, as the numbers of data sets are limited in number. Network with six input neurons, one hidden layer with five neurons, and two output neurons is designed for sandstone. Similar network for marble with four hidden neurons is also designed. To deal with the problem of overfitting of data. Bayesian regulation is used and network is trained with 1500 training epochs. The coefficients of correlation among the predicted and observed values are high and encouraging and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) obtained are very low.

Monthly sea surface temperature (SST) data of 49 years (1950-98) have been analysed to examine the relationship of SST anomalies in the Indian Ocean with Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) and to derive useful predictors for long-range forecasts of ISMR. There is significant positive relationship between ISMR and SST anomalies over the Arabian Sea during November to January and also in May. SST anomalies over southeast Indian Ocean during February to March and over North Pacific during May are also positively correlated with ISMR. The composite analysis revealed that in Non-ENSO drought years (1966, 1968, 1974 and 1979) negative SST anomalies are observed over south Indian Ocean from February which slowly spread towards equator during the subsequent months. These negative SST anomalies which persist during the monsoon season may be playing an important role in modulating ISMR especially in non-ENSO years. Derived two indices, ARBSST (SST anomalies in Arabian Sea averaged over 15° - 25° N, 50° - 70° E and November-December-January) and SIOSST (SST anomalies over south Indian Ocean averaged over 15° - 30° S, 70° - 110° E and February and March) as useful predictors for the long-range forecasts of ISMR. The correlation coefficient (for the period 1950-98) of ARBSST and SIOSST with ISMR is 0.45 and 0.46 respectively which is statistically significant at 99.9

Intra-seasonal variation of surface air temperature observed by the automatic weather station at Syangpoche in Khumbu region, Nepal Himalayas, is analyzed. In the monsoon season, temperature was nearly constant with large decrease decrease in insolation due to monsoon clouds. On the other hand, large intra-seasonal variation existed in the winter with increase in temperature associated with passing synoptic scale high-pressure system which disturb local circulation pattern as well as decrease in temperature due to the nighttime strong radiative cooling under the condition of snow covers. Monsoon clouds and deep valley system caused unique surface temperature variation.

Recently developed various global microwave algorithus for DMSP-SSM/I satellite data are used for the estimation of surface winds over the Indian ocean. Sea surface wind speeds from these algorithms are compared with sea surface wind speeds reported by coincidental Minicoy island (lowest height 2 m a s l) station over the Arabian sea. A statistical comparison of these algorithms is made in terms of rms error, correlation coefficient, bias and standard deviation. Algorithm of Petty showed best results in the comparison. On the basis of this algorithm a notable characteristic feature such as acquiring of large area of strong surface winds (12-15 ms-1) to the south of dipping of monsoon trough in head Bay and then encircling of these winds during further development of low and depression (22-27 July 1992) is observed. This complete life cycle monitoring assessment of monsoon depression in respect of surface winds based on DMSP-SSM/I satellite data encourages to utilise our IRS-P4 (Oceansat-1) satellite data at different frequencies to emerge more details of various weather systems over teh Indian region.

In the context of the ever increasing interest in the regional aspects of global warming, understanding the spatio-temporal variations of tropospheric temperature over India is of great importance. The study, based on the data from 19 well distributed radiosonde stations for the period 1971-2000, examines the seasonal and annual mean temperature variations at the surface and five selected upper levels, viz, 850, 700, 500, 200 and 150 hPa. An attempt has also been made to bring out the association between tropospheric temperature variations over Indian and the summer monsoon variability, including the role of its major teleconnection parameter, the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Seasonal and annal mean all-India temperature series are analyzed for surface and five tropospheric levels. The mean annual cycles of temperature at different tropospheric levels indicate that the pre-monsoon season is slightly warmer than the monsoon season at the surface, 850 hPa levels, while its is relatively cooler at all intermediate levels. The mean annual temperature shows a warming of 0.18°C and 0.3°C per 10 years at the surface and 850 hPa, respectively. Tropospheric temperture anomaly composities of excess (deficient) monsoon rainfall years show pronounced positive (negative) anomalies during the month of May, at all the levels. The pre-monsoon pressure of Darwin has significant positive correlation with the monsoon temperature at the surface and 850 hPa.

A comprehensive analysis of eleven break monsoon situations that occurred during the period 1987 to 1997 have been attempted in the study. The various features like daily rainfall departures, wind anomalies and the satelite derived Outgoing Long wave Radiation (OLR) associated with the commencement/cessation of the break monsoon condition are studied with a view to identifying the precursons associate the break situation. The results reveal that there is progressive decrease of below normal rainfall departures 5 days prior to the actual break day in the latitude belts south of 20°N. During the period of the revival of the monsoon, the time section of the daily rainfall departures shows that the daily rainfall departure first starts becoming above normal in the southern most latitudinal belt 5° N to 10°N from the second day onwards after the cessation of the break. Similarly, the easterly anomalies in the zonal wind are first noticed in the southern latitude even 5 days prior to the starting of the brek in the lower and middle troposphere. The maximum easterly anomalies in the lower and the middle troposphere move northwards upto 20°N. The composite latitudinal time section of OLR anomaly show a large area of negative OLR anomaly extending from 20°S to 10°N. The area is defined as the Southern. Hemispheric Convective Zone (SHCZ). The negative OLR anomaly (10 Wm-2 is noticed arount 5°S to 0° N. It increases to Wm-2 on the second day of the break on the same latitudinal belt. The daily OLR anomaly pattern shows that the area of the negative OLR anomaly around the equatorial region increases with the approach of a break epoch. The forecasting aspects of the commencement/cessation of the break have been also discussed.

An attempt has been made in this paper to study some parameters for forecasting thundersqualls over Calcutta (Airport) during pre-monsoon season. Parameterisation of thermodynamic components alongwith the synoptic support during thundersqualls over Calcutta has been discussed here. A forecasting aspect for propagation speed of thunderstorm cell at Calcutta in pre-monsoon season has been examined with respect to radar-echo positions, mid-level winds and convective available potential energy (CAPE). Occurrences of multiple thundersqualls over Calcutta Airport within a few hours' interval have been discussed and examined through hodograph analysis, radar observations and synoptic situations.

Micracanrthoceras, Spath, 1925; Durangites, Burckhardt, 1912; Corongoceras, Spath, 1925 and Tithopeltoceras, Arkell, 1953 helps in drawing precisely the Jurassic-Cretaceous system boundary in Kutch and in palaeocontinental reconstruction. Anomalously warmer watrs, viz. the Arabian Sea mini warm pool were reported in the southeastern Arabian Sea, which is believed to drive the onset vortex of the southwest monsoon. To understand the caracteristics of this mini warm pool, an experiment was conducted on-board INS Sagardhwani during the middle of May 2000. Analysis of the oceanographic data revealed the existence of a mini warm pool with temperatrre in excess of 30.25°C along 9°N between 68 and 75.5°E during the pre-onset period of the southwest monsoon. Arsenic contamination of sediments in parts of Chhattisgarh has been reported. The nature of arsenic contamination and the conditions which may favour its release from this matrix has been reported. The contaminated sediment serves as a long-time source of arsenic because` As' mobility and transport in the environemt are strongly influenced by its association with the solid phase in soil and sediment. The results estblish the sediment contamination of certain water bodies, including a major river in the region. `As' levels in the contaminated sediments lie between 200 and 10.75 ppm, with a mean level of contamination at 68.00 ppm and standard deviation of 41.81 ppm. A direct result of this contamination has been noted in the form of lower productivity of the Shivnath river in fish population. Sequential arsenic extraction procedures were adopted to differentiate the nature of arsenic species in the sediment and its mineral assemblages. Two analytical schemes were followed to identify the arsenic phases in the sediment. Sequential extraction anslyses indicate that a large portion of the arsenic in Chowki-Raj nandgaon-Durg sediments is in complex silicate matrices or is calcium-bounded. Attempts to assess the ground water quality in the villages of Kosi-zone, Bihar, Water samples were collected from remote villages. All physico-chemical parameters are within the permissible limits except iron and nitrate. However, bacteriological study revealed that water in the study area is not suitable for drinking purpose. Due to use of such water villagers suffer from water borne diseases. The main causes of ground water pollution are high level of water, dumping of domestic waste near hand pumps, location of hand pumps near agricultural fields, lack of concrete platforms around hand pumps and open air defection. There is an urgent need to design health education program with respect to environmental sanitation and safe drinking water supply.

In the Himalaya, glacier and snow-melt form an important source of water into the North Indian rivers. However, this source of water is not permancent as glacial dimensions change with climate. One of the important parameters to model future changes in glacial extent is the mass balace. An attempt has been made to calculate the mass balance for 19 glaciers in Himachal Pradesh using accumulation area ratio (AAR) Method. A regression relationship between AAR and specific mass balance was developed using field data from 1982 to 1988 for Shaune Garang glacier and 1976 to 1984 for Gor Garang glacier. Regression analysis suggests good correlation between AAR and specific mass balance with r<^>2 as 0.80, AAR for 2000 and 2001 was estimated for 19 glaciers in the Baspa basin by systematic weekly analysis of WiFS images of Indian Remote Sensing satellite from May to September. Mass balance was estimated during 2001 and 2002 for 19 glaciers in the basin, suggesting overall specific mass balance value of 90 and - 78 cm, respectively. The investigations suggest a loss of 0.2347 km<^>3 of glacial ice in the last two years. The investigation has shown that four glaciers have no accumulation area, as these are located in lower-altitude zones. These glaciers are expected to face terminal retreat due to lack of formation of new ice. This is likely to pose serius problem of availability of water to many villages located in the Baspa basin.

Shoaling is a behavior pattern exhibited by several marine and freshwater fishes. However, little information is available on the social factors that form the basis of shoaling preference in tropical freshwater fishes. The effect of familiarity and shoal size on the preference of individuals of Anabas testudineus, a freshwater fish of the tropical region has been analyzed. Results show that given a choice, A. testudineus preferred to spend more time with familiar group compared to an unfamiliar group of equal size. The fish, however, preferred the larger group when two unfamiliar stimulus groups of different sizes were presented. The preference became significant when the ratio of stimulus groups was 1 : 1.9 and highly significant when the ratio was 1 : 4. A comparison of the influence of familiarity and group size showed that A. testudineus had a bias for the larger unfamiliar group to the smaller familiar group, when the ratio of familiar versus unfamiliar stimulus shoals was 1 : 4. Hence, an individual fish exhibited peference for joiuning a familiar shoal only when the ratio of the size of the familiar group to that of the unfamiliar group was 1 : 1. The adaptive advantage of this behaviour has been discussed.

Many people of this area are affected by teeth problems. Fluoride concentration and other water quality parameters in ground water samples from 65 villeges were assessed. A total of 262 drinking water sources (102 hand pump, 80 tube well, 70 open well and 10 Govt. supply) were examined. A systematic calculation of the correlation coefficient has been carried out between different physico chemical parameters.

The Bay of Bengal lithosphere is known to have bben experiencing compressive stresses in a N-S direction while subduction forces along the AndamanIsland Arc-trench system impart an E-W tensile regime. Subsidence due to sediment loading aided by the inffluence of horizontal and vertical forces may be deforming the Bay of Bengal lithosphere. Majumdar and Biswas (1995) explained the widespred diffuse earthquake activity and the N-S compressive fault plane solutionsin the Bay of Bengal as due to intraplate deformation. An attempt has been made to investigate the crust-mantle structure along E-W, NW-SE and N-S sections in the central part of the Bay of Bengal from the free-air gravity and total intensity magnetic data.In the case of E-W and NW-SE profiles the crustal thickness is found to be different on either side of 85oE ridge. The crust appears to be thineast of the 85o ridge compared to the crust on the western side. The 85oE ridge rocks are found to be strongly magnetized. A near N-S section in the vicinity of87o longitude revealed that the sediment thickness increases from about 10oN towards North and a corresponding deepening of the Moho was observed. Effect of the85oE ridge and 86oE fracture zone between 5oN and 10oN was found to be pronounced because the transect is aligned along a flank of the ridge and crosses thr fracture zone.

Methane hydrates/gas hydrates are now viewed as a promising alternate energy source in the near future. Studies are now more focused to find the indicators of these deposits and aid in exploration purpose. Bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs) indentified on the seismic reflection records are the most important indicators of gas hydrates. BSRs are recognized on the seismic records as strong negative-polarity reflectors mimicking the seafloor. Velocity and amplitude (VAMP) are essentially the pseudo-structures that are associated with the massive hydrate deposits and are also observable on the seismic records as a series of pull-ups directly above the push-downs. These features have bassed used to delineate free gas in the Aleutian, Bowers and Bering basin. Investigations are being carried out in Indian offshore regions to evaluate the presence of gas ghdrates. Therefore studies regarding the occurrence of VAMPs gain importance. VAMP anomalies identified in the marine reflection data of Kerala-konkan region western India have been studied.

Integrated geophysical surveys comprising Electrical resistivity and seismic refraction methods have been employed in the coastal belt of Digha for investigation the nature and status of sub-surface saline water contamination, if any, and suggest the remedial measures to arrest possible saline water intrusion into the aquifer. Geophysical survays have delineated the different sub-surface geological formations like sune sand, top sandy soil, saline clay. It is also inferred from geophysical interpretation that the thickness of near surface saline zone decreases away from the shore. Fortunately for Digha, clay layers present at different shallow sub-surface levels, which have probable extensions under the sea, have acted as barriers against any large scale saline water intrusion in the deep aquifer. Clay formation are predominant upto a depth of about 60m in the area below which aquifer zone has been demarcated. Ground water can be effectively exploited from a depth of 90m - 120m in the area.

The Narmada-Son Lineament (NSL) in central India is a prominent tectonic feature; expending to about 1600 km from the west coast. Five deep seismic sounding (DSS) profiles were shot across the nSL to delineate its crustal structure. some geothermal studies have suggested a high heat flow regime for this zone. Seismic velocity,crustal structure and focal depth information for Hirapur-Mandla profile passing through Jabalpur have been intignated and a two-dimensional thermal structure along this profile. The results indicate a temperature of 510-535°C at the Moho depth (41-43 km). Surface heat flow varies between 45 and 47 mW/m2. Results suggest a low mantle heat flow, which in turn, makes the lower crust brittle and amenable to the occurrence of deep, focused earthquakes.

A total of 23 representative underground water samples were collected from different locality of Jind city. Various parameters, namely pH, EC, TDS, TH, TA, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, CO2-3, HCO-3, CL-, SO2-4, NO-3 and F-have been determined to evaluate its suitability for domestic application. The EC, TDS, total hardness and total alkalinity of the underground water varied from0.6-3. 1 m mho/cm, 384-1984 ppm, 292-884 ppm and 220-264 ppm, respectively. The data was statistically analysed and the very positive correlation has observed between EC-TA, EC-Na+, EC-HCO-3, EC-CL-, EC-SO2-4.

A single scattering radiating transfer model has been developed to calculate the air mass factors (AMFs) of NO2 and O3 for scattered light observations. The direct and scattered intensities reaching the ground has been calculated using this model, which are utilized for computation of AMFs of these species. AmFs have been used to derive the total column densities (TCDs) from slant column densities (SCDs). Daily intensity data obtained by spectroscopic observations made at Pune (18°32'N, 73°51'E) during May 2000- May 2001 are sused for the computation of SCDs of No2 and o3 by differential optial absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) technique. NO2, O3, H2O and O4 have characteristic absorption features in the visible range 462-498 nm. These features have been used in the DOAS technique. These features have been used in DOAS technique. The percentage differential optical depths (DODs0 of NO2, O3, H2O and O4 have been computed. The TCD of O3 has also been derived by other methods. They are in good agreement with Dobson spectrophotometer observation. Daily and seasonal variations in TCDs of NO2 and O3 at Pune for the above period are discussed.

Characterization of groundwater flow regime was carried out in typical crystalline rocks of Dhanbad in the Saraidhela area of northern India. It is a hard rock terrain and consists of fractured felspathic gneiss and quartzite. Three sets of fracture were studied and a conceptual model of aquifer was established using NETWORK program. Out of three sets,set I and Set III are the major conduits for groundwater flow. The cardinal aquifer parameter like porosity, permeability, velocity and flow rate are obtained. The velocity calculated for Set I and Set III are 1.5207*10-09 m/s and 1.5193*10-09 m/s respectively for a head difference of 0.001 m. The porosity is less than 1 in both the set and the permeability for the two sets are 1.4* 10-04 m/day and 1.08 10o4 m/day respectively.

Disjunct distributions among wet-zone taxa of the Indian subcontinent have intrigues biologists for decades. Most authors have invoked variations of either the dispersal or the vicariance model to explain disjunct distribution. However, some have noted that incorrect toxonomy, due to convergence inmorphological characters, can erroneously suggest disjunct distribution. An appropriate approach to test these models (vicariance, dispersal convergence) is to use molecular phylogenetic methods. A survey of recent molecular phylogenetic studies on Indian systems with disjunct distribution suggests that convergence may be quite common. Therefore, Its proposed that the first step in studying disjunct distributions is to determine if the observed pattern is real (true disjunct) and not due to convergence i.e. an artifact of incorrect taxonomy (false disjunct).

The Indian Ocean monsoon system is one of the dominant features of the earth's climate influencing weather and climate of the Asian region. Long-term changes in the monsoon have been linked to orbital forcings as well as the Himalayan-Tibetan uplift. Changes in the monsoon are preserved in various proxies across the region both on land and in the marine sediments. Plio-pleistocene record of monsoon proxy deep-sea benthic foraminifera from ocean Drilling Programme Site 758, northeastern Indian Ocean to understand a link between orbital change and Indian Ocean monsoon variability. Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) of uvigerina proboscidea and Epistominella exigua, have been found blooming in two different seasons of the India monsoon- the summer and winder monsoons, respectively. An inverse relation between the two is observed during the past ~ 1000 kyr in othe CWT-extracted 400-kyr components as also in the raw data. The variable relation between the monsoon proxies and earth's eccentricity at Site 758 agrees with the recent findings that orbital forcing of the Indian monsoon shows major shifts during the plio-Pleistocene. These shifts correspond to the advent of growth and decay of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets since the last 2.5 Ma.

The results of analysis were interpreted using various geochemical diagrams, such as Gibbs plot, Piper trilinear and Durov diagrams. indicates that recharge, water-rock interactions mainly control the hydrochemistry of groundwater.The suitsbility of ground water samples for domestic purpose were examined usingWHO and Indian Standards, which indicates that all samples are suitable for domestic purposes. Groundwater suitability for irrigation was verified by USSL classification and RSC, which shows that a groundwater sample of the study area is suitable for irrigation.

Total arsenic distribution in carbonaceous materials across the four northeastern states of India warrants immediate continuous monitoring of the situation as it a serious public-health concern. Many studies on arsenic in India are already available data about this particular sustrate coal and bituminous matter are not yeat available. The study attributed predominant association of arsenic in the hydrogenated units of organic matter. However, association in the aromatic units of organic matter is also observed. both in situ and drifted nature of accumulation of arsenic is observed. The study revealed the principal nature of accumulation of arsenic by the formation of organo-arsenic complexes and exhibited a regional enrichment trend from east to west, with average arsenic content of 95.12 μg/kg. Apart from creating a strong database on arsenic distribution pattern for this virgin northeastern region of india, the study provides an effective demonstration that arsenic association, concentration, distribution and post-depositional mobility in carbonaceous matter can be used to construct and predictive model for a depositional geo-chemical set-up towards aquifer development, with optimum possible environmental risk.

The upper air meteorological data obtained from balloon-borne GLASS sonde launches during the campaign are analysed for studying the thermodynamic structure of the Marine Atmospheirc Boundary Layer over the CAS. Analysis of profiles of the thermodynamic variables revealed a double mixed layer structure over the region of CAS has been made. an attempt here to provide a possible explanation of the double mixed layer.
