Effective size value of soil from the Lower Subansiri basin, Assam varies from medium silt to very fine sand. The distribution of effective size value suggests relatively coarse nature of the soils in the north-eastern part of the area. The sorting coefficient value of soils ranges from well sorted to poorly sorted while the uniformity coefficient value of soils varies from uniformly graded to non-uniformly graded. The distribution of sorting coefficient and uniformity coefficient values indicates that the overall sorting of soils in the eastern part of the Subansiri rive is relatively better than soils of the western part and apart from a few locations in the eastern part, where soils are uniformly graded, the soils of the study area are by and large moderately graded in nature. An endeavour has been made to evaluate the hydrological properties of soils based on their textural characteristics. The higher percentage of sand in comparison to the percentage of silt and clay suggests a reasonably good porosity and permeability of soils. Based on effective size, sorting coefficient and uniformity coefficient values it is synthesised that owing to overall coarseness, better sorting and relatively more uniform grading of constituent grains, the soils of the eastern part of the Lower Subansiri basin are more porous and permeable compared to the western part of the basin.

Puthimari river sediments from a point bar at Puthimari village, Kamrup district, Assam have been analysed to determine the statistical parameters of the grain size distribution. The cumulative and frequency curves indicate that the sediments mostly possess bimodal distribution. Cumulative curves and log-probability plots indicate that major part of the sediments were carried in saltation. The study shows that the sediments are mainly fine sand to coarse silt, moderately sorted, nearly symmetrical to positive skewed and leptokurtic. Bivariant plots of various statistical parameters show that the plots commonly possess meaningful relationships. CM pattern shows that the sediments were carried as graded as well as uniform suspention. Textural classification shows that the sediments are silty sand.

Paleogene sequence, south of Bombay High is known for its hydrocarbon potential and is a thrust area for future exploration. The sequence is divided into Panna, Bassein, Mukta and Panvel Formations. The Panna Formation consists mainly of fluvial sediments deposited over basaltic flows. The Bassein Formation comprises mainly of carbonates, foraminiferal wackestone to grainstone, indicating varying energy conditions of deposition, whereas, Mukta Formation is mainly low energy wackestone with shale. The youngest Panvel Formation consists mainly of dolomitic wackestone with alternate shale bands. The carbonate sediments were deposited under one mega regressive cycle. Bassein Formation has a good source generation potential. Short distance migration of hydrocarbon is confirmed by palynological studies of crude oil. The payzones are mainly from Bassein and Panna Fromations in which secondary porosity ie. vugs, channels, and moldic types are well preserved. The primary porosity in the formation was destroyed by sparitisation during early diagenesis.

All the mathematical models for mine climate prediction are based on the numerical values of thermal properties of associated rock formations. Among them thermal conductivity is an important parameter and requires special attention. A simple method of in-situ measurement of thermal conductivity in coal mines is discussed. During experimentation 20 measurements were taken at number of locations in different collieries in different seams. Altogether 9 holes were drilled and used for underground experimentation. From these measurements average calculated values of in-situ effective thermal conductivity are presented.

Water quality index (WQI) has been calculated for the ground water of Kakinada - a port city in Andhra Pradesh (India) - for two sampling periods, viz., Oct., 1994 and Jan., 1995. This calculation was carried out for 29 sampling stations, using the data on 8 water quality parameters, viz., pH, Total dissolved solids, Total hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Sulphate, and Nitrate. The calculated WQIs vary from 24.7 (at the sampling station MSN Charties in Oct., 1994) to 386.4 (at the sampling station Turangi in Oct., 1994). The average values of WQI show that the quality of ground water in Kakinada is poorer in January (WQI = 167.7) compared to that in October (WQI = 151.4), when the pollutants are diluted following the rainy reason. This investigation shows that the ground water of Kakinada is fit for drinking without treatment (WQI ≤ 100) only at 11 sampling stations during October and 7 sampling stations during January.

The Garo-Rajmahal gap represents a physiographic gap in the outcrop continuity of Satpura strike due to alluvial cover between Garo and Rajmahal hills. The major part of this gap lies in Bangladesh. It is the junction of continental foredeep basin (Ganga valley) in the north and the Bengal basin in the south. A major drainage system of Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers flows through this narrow region from the Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal. Earlier, many differing views have been put forward regarding its origin. The present paper has brought out the origin and evolutionary stages of the gap on the basis of integrated analysis of geological and geophysical data of India and Bangladesh. A crustal model for the gap area is also presented. It has been concluded that the gap had its embryonic origin during Permo-Carboniferous (Lower Gondwana) period and evolved through the geological time to its present form.

Power Law function indicating the possible element of determinism on the time scale has been described. The existence of "roll off" towards higher rank-order, however, seems to indicate the transition in the nature of structure. In order to constrain these results, authors further compute the second order Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy (L2), which reveals a coherent time structure with predictive time limit of about 12 to 16 months, indicating a quasi-deterministic dynamics that apparently is also evident (Power Law) in rank-order statistics. This predictive time limit seems to be too short to be associated with major global tectonics. Therefore, they propose an alternative possible physical mechanism, which may coexist with regional tectonics. In the light of present results, they suggest that surface/subsurface water infiltration into the main fractures and faults during a favourable season could increase the pore pressure thereby triggering frequent earthquakes, particularly in critically unstable tectonic regions.

Large number of coal samples from the Palaeogene coal deposits of Northeast India were subjected to detailed chemical (proximate, ultimate and Rock-Eval pyrolysis) and petrographic (maceral, microlithotype and vitrinite reflectance) analyses to examine their source rock characteristics and to explore their participation in hydrocarbon generation. The results show that these coals are sub-bituminous `C' to high volatile bituminous `C' in rank and have requisite petrographic characteristics to act as a potential source for the generation of significant amount of normal hydrocarbons. The values of vitrinite reflectance, particularly of the coals of Meghalaya and Assam, suggest a maturation close to the `top oil window' (birth line). This indicates the possibility of expulsion of oil and condensates in the basin. However, this contention needs to be supported by organic geochemical data, maturation modelling and time of hydrocarbon generation.

Jharsuguda Granite is intruded by several pegmatitic bodies, including rare metal bearing ones hosting columbite-tantalite and beryl. Geochemically, it is a silica-rich, metaluminous to peraluminous and potassium granite enriched in trace elements such as Rb, Nb, Zr, Y, Ga and Th, and depleted in Ba, Sr and Ti resulting in high Rb/Sr, Rb/Ba and Ga/Al ratios. The petromineralogical and geochemical characters indicate Jharsuguda Granite as an A-type, within plate granite (WPG), emplaced around 650°C-700°C at an assumed pressure of 5 kb. The granite characteristics similar to niobium-yttrium-fluorine (NYF) bearing, A-type fertile granites.

Spinifex Textured Peridotitic Komatiite (STPK) has been identified in the southern part of Badampahar Gorumahisani schist belt from the Mid-Archaean granite-greenstone sequence of Singhbhum-Orissa craton. Spectacular field outcrop of large tabular stacked plate olivine pseudomorphs with herringbone to haphazardly oriented book-like structure is located in Patharkata area (22°05'00"N:86°11'50"E). Petrographically, the STPK comprises olivine (completely altered to serpentine), tremolite, chlorite, talc, carbonate, magnetite and glass. Retention of primary skeletal texture, lack of metamorphic cleavage and largely pseudomorphous alteration pattern point to possible syn-eruptional hydration. Their major element chemistry conforms well with that of STPK of Barberton belt (3450 Ma) and reflects an Al-depleted signature. This volcanics-dominated curvilinear Badampahar-Gorumahisani belt has been intruded undoubtedly by the latest phase (3000 Ma) of Singhbhum granite (SBG) and possibly by a still earlier phase of SBG (3300 Ma). No data on lower age limit is available. Major element chemistry of the Archaean komatiites, occurring in the Badampahar Gorumahisani schist belt, suggests that they have been derived from mantle source and under extensional regime, erupted in a subaqueous (oceanic) environment.

Economic potentiality of the heavy minerals in the beaches between Baruva and Bavanapadu extending for about 45 km was examined. In the sub-surface sediments, the heavy minerals were studied at an interval of 1m up to a maximum depth of 5.8m. In general the concentration of heavy minerals is high in dunes followed by backshore and foreshore regions. Heavy mineral content increases from surface to sub-surface in dunes, decreases in foreshore and does not vary much in backshore. The heavy minerals include mainly ilmenite, garnet, sillimanite and ortho-pyroxenes with minor amounts of amphiboles, zircon, monazite, rutile etc. Majority of the heavies such as ilmenite, monazite, zircon etc. are concentrated in finer fractions while some of the heavies like garnet and sillimanite are concentrated in coarser fractions. The inferred reserves estimated for the area indicate its economical potential.

The evolution of the Satpura basin could be considered in terms of pre-rift, syn-rift and post-rift phases. The pre-rift phase is characterised by the development of sag in which sediments of the Talchir Formation were uniformly deposited. Sediments deposited in prograding fluvial and paludal environments, representing the Barakar Formation followed this. Tectonic readjustments related to initial break up of the Gondwanal and resulted in the development of a rift system in which remaining sediments of the Barakar Formation and entire Motur and Bijori Formations were deposited in a "Venetian blind" pattern due to progressive subsidence, rapid sedimentation and northward shift of depocentres caused by a northward migration of the rift. These pre-rift and syn-rift phases were initiated in the Early Permian and culminated in Latest Permian. The post-rift phase, which was initiated in the Late Lower Triassic, witnessed the deposition of sediments of Pachmarhi and Matkuli Formations. Subsequent to the Jurassic hiatus, sediments of Jabalpur Formation were deposited overlapping the older sediments. Deposition of Infra-trappean sediments was the last episode of the post-rift phase. These are essentially calcretes formed on the peneplained surfaces of the older Gondwana sediments.

Cordierite-phlogopite dominated Mg-Al rich rocks occur as small enclaves at the Hatimunda hill near Junagarh in the Orissa sector of the Eastern Ghats belt. Peak mineral assemblages in these rocks included phlogopite, bronzite, kyanite (now relict) and quartz/corundum. Sapphirine typically occurs as corona around corundum or in clusters along with corundum. The sapphirine is slightly more aluminous than the MgO:Al2O3:SiO2 ratio of 7:9:3. Textural criteria and phase analysis in the model system MAS indicate the following reactions: Opx + Sil + Qtz = Crd; Opx + Sil = Crd + Crn; and Opx + Crn = Spr + Crd. A qualitative petrogenetic grid shows that these reactions may be crossed in sequence along a decompressional P-T trajectory. The rocks preserve textural evidence of formation of sapphirine, at least in part, from phlogopite and sillimanite. P-T conditions for peak metamorphism were 700-800°C and

Reports here new experimental results on the high temperature differential thermal analyses (DTA) on six graphite samples from the Dharwar craton, along with the structural data obtained by powder X-ray diffraction, carbon isotopic and Laser Raman spectrospcopic studies. Degree of metamorphism and crystallite size obtained by X-ray studies indicates systematic variation in graphite with peak metamorphic temperatures. X-ray and Laser Raman spectroscopic studies do not show the presence of rhombohedral graphite phase which is the most characteristic of the fluid-deposited (abiogenic) graphite. The most reliable information on the origin of the graphite is provided by the carbon isotopic ratio. However, the interpretation of the isotopic data is usually not straightforward because other processes may influence the original signature. But isotopic fractionation does not alter once the graphite is well crystallized, because of very sluggish kinetics of carbon diffusion. Present studies show that the main exothermic DTA peak temperature of graphite samples decreases linearly with increase of the interplanar d-spacing d (002) of the hexagonal graphite structure and follows the relation d002 (Angstrom) = 3.5197-1.67 X 10-4 T (K). These studies also reveal that DTA/thermogravimetric analysis is an effective tool for distinction of detrital graphite material from the poorly crystallized organic matter.

Post-Delhi acid magmatism at Degana has yielded three intrusive bodies of topaz granite, the earliest one emplaced within phyllite of Delhi Supergroup and the other two successively in the core of previous intrusive, along with two generations of aplites. Wolframite mineralisation has occurred at two different stages during the magmatism: greisen-bordered vein-type ore bodies hosted by the earliest granite intrusive and adjoining phyllite represent the first stage; and (2)stockwork ore bodies hosted by an intrusion breccia developed at a later stage following the emplacement of other two granite bodies. Presence of topaz, Li-mica and fluorite is a characteristic feature of these granites and wolframite deposits. The granites are strongly peraluminous and geochemically specialised with enrichment of Li, F, Rb and depleted in Sr, K-Ar dating of zinnwaldite from wolframite bearing lode indicates an age of 860±25 Ma.

Nature of lithospheric mantle deformation beneath the continental regions is a problem that has attracted global attention. It is being questioned whether the continental segments have remained the same at deeper levels since their evolution or whether recent tectonic and geodynamic events have deformed them. In the present work, authors study the lithospheric thermal structure beneath the elongated, anomalous, seismically active and rifted western continental margin of India and its surroundings. The study, based on the hitherto known evolutionary history of the Indian subcontinent, suggests that the lithospheric mantle beneath this part of the Indian peninsula has been considerably sheared, deformed and weakened due to mainly late Cretaceous - early Tertiary catastrophic and geodynamic events apart from Proterozoic thermal reactivations. Beneath this region, the asthenosphere has upwarped to a depth as shallow as 38 to 80 km due to rise of isotherms caused by subcrustal melting. The study further reveals that the segments situated north of latitude 16°N are much warmer with shallow Moho depths than those situated south of it.

Scleractinian corals commonly occur at specific horizons and localities, in carbonate and in siliciclastic sediments, throughout the Jurassic (Bajocian to Oxfordian) of Kachchh as meadows, biostromes, boulder beds and as scattered specimens. In many cases they are part of the autochthonous benthic fauna and in others they suffered short intra-basinal transport. Cerioid forms of low diversity (Amphiastraea, Isastraea, etc.) abound in high-energy siliciclastic sediments. High diversity coral faunas, which include thamnasteroid (Microsolena, Dimorpharaea and Kobya) and solitary (Trocharaea and Trochoplegma) taxa with fenestrate septa and plocoid forms (Stylina), dominate in carbonate sediments deposited in low energy, deeper-water environments. The solitary Montlivaltia exhibits a great physiological tolerance of environmental stress. In all, eight coral assemblages have been recognized with the Early Bajocian to Late Callovian sediments of the Kachchh basin.

Late Cretaceous-Tertiary sediments together with the underlying Sylhet Trap and Precambrian granites/gneisses are exposed along the southern fringe of Meghalaya plateau. This huge pile of sediments is dissected by E-W and NNE-SSW striking faults. Several workers postulated a direct correlation between tectonism and sedimentation, interpreting the E-W striking Dauki fault as a `growth fault'. The present work suggests that the sedimentation of this pile is controlled by basin transgression and regression and not by the Dauki or other faults. Dauki fault being post-Kopili (post-Eocene) in age, could not have acted as a growth fault during the deposition of these Late Cretaceous-Palaeogene sediments. In the plate tectonic version of Greater India in Gondwanaland, a broadly coeval lithofacies and biofacies assemblages existed in Late Cretaceous-Palaeogene sequences of the southern Tibetan plateau and southern Meghalaya plateau. While the sedimentation in Tibet during Palaeogene is dominated by carbonate rocks - except at the K/T boundary (Jidula Formation), the sedimentation in southern Meghalaya is represented by arenaceous and calcareous rocks.

New analytical reagent for the determination of Ruthenium(III) by using res-acetophenone guanylhydrazone (RAG) is reported. Complete synthesis of RAG has been given in brief. Absorption spectra of the reagent and the complex are discussed. An absorption maxima occurs at 375 nm for Ru(III)-RAG complex. Variation of pH indicates that the measurements can be done at pH 1.5. The molar extinction coefficient and Sandell's sensitivity are 0.7469 x 104 lit. mole-1 cm-1 and 0.04124 μg/cm2 respectively. The nature of the complex has been studied by Job's method and mole ratio method. Under specified conditions, Ru(III) and RAG form 1:1 complex. The Beer's law is valid upto 35.0 ppm. The instability constant is 1.934 x 10-6. The method is applied in synthetic mixtures for the determination of ruthenium.

The results show that total solid, chloride, sulphate and COD are higher in level while some of the samples are coloured.

Ichnological findings from the Indian Gondwana basins provide a new insight into the role played by the ancient sea in shaping Upper Palaeozoic-Mesozoic geohistory. The ichnocoenoses with high density and diversity define typical shallow marine inchnozones and ichnofacies (Skolithos and Cruziana) recurring as thin tongues within continental deposits and, at times, clearly separating coal-bearing cyclic deposits. In the same way, as documented in other Gondwana fragments, these ichnofacies tongues in conjunction with complementary marine invertebrate body fossils, unquestionably suggest strong infaunal activities and short-lived shallow marine incursions, the most conspicuous of which are noted within the Talchir and Barakar Formations. They also split the coal seams into transgressive-regressive couplets, a very common feature of shallow marine lower deltaic (paralic) deposits.

A shrink-swell soil sequence developed over Cretaceous-Eocene age basaltic catena was examined for understanding the influence of local relief on morphological, physical and chemical characteristics of soil. The morphology of these clay soils occurring on microhighs and microlows of catena shows that the Vertic haplustepts on summits have dark grey to brown matrix with subangular to angular blocky aggregates having pressure faces on ped surfaces. There was successive increase in the thickness of Cambic and slickensided horizons in subgroups of Vertisol on the middle and foot slopes having yellowish grey matrix with depth, and of angular blocky structural aggregates with hard and firm consistency when dry. The Fe and Mn concretions in Bss1 and Bss2 horizons of Chromic Haplusterts (P3) and Typic Haplusterts (P4) have indicated periodic oxidation and reduction leading to successive mobilisation and precipitation of Fe and Mn as oxides of small nodules along slickensides. The particle size for soils of summits and middle slopes was `fine' but for soils on foot slopes, the particle size was `very fine' at family level. These soils are slightly to strongly alkaline with increasing trends of carbonates and decreasing trends of organic carbon content. Exchangeable Ca to Mg ratio decreased with the profile depth and landscape position.

Fourier series was utilized for the estimation of monthly sunshine hours based on the mean monthly measured sunshine hours. The mean monthly measured sunshine hours data of 34 years, from 1958 to 1994 at Anand has been used in the present study. Fourier series was developed by taking different harmonics i.e., 3rd to 6th harmonic. Estimates thus obtained revealed that the results obtained with the third harmonic are in good agreement with measured monthly sunshine hours. The differences between measured and estimated sunshine hours were found statistically non-significant.

Granulites and granitoids around Rayagada in the north central part of the Eastern Ghats belt display structural and petrological differences when compared to similar rocks from Chilka and Jenapore in the northern Eastern Ghats. The impress of F1 deformation is almost erased while that of F3 is muted. The metapelites have a restricted chemical range and are non-migmatitic. There are two varieties of leptynitic granitoids, one of which is interlayered with yet another S-type granite containing cordierite. The maximum recorded temperature from geothermometers is 780°C, but the magnitude of pressure is comparatively low, the highest value being 6.3 kbar. Another distinctie feature of the pressure-temperature record is the absence of evidence of decompression in the lower realms of the pressure and temperature. Metamorphic reactions that could be identified indicate cooling, a noteworthy reaction being the sillimanite to andalusite transformation. Integration of data from pressure-temperature sensors suggest cooling at two pressures, 6 and 5 kbar. The generation of two types of granitoids from metapelites is interpreted to be due to intersection with solidus curves for pelitic and graywacke-like compositions, constrained by recent experiments, at 6 and 5 kbar. The first melting occurred on a prograde path while the second one was due to increase in temperature during exhumation at tectonic rates.

Using Thornthwaite's technique weekly water balance has been computed for a selected network of stations in India for the monsoon season of the drought year 1987 beginning from June to the end of September utilizing potential evapotranspiration values obtained by Penman's method. Above normal value of weekly aridity index has been taken as the agricultural drought index to demarcate the drought affected areas. Results showed that a major portion of the Gujarat state had continuously been under the grip of moderate to severe drought conditions since 18-24 June till September end. Other areas substantially affected were Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha where prolonged drought spell abating only for short periods prevailed in the season.

Degree sheet Aeromagnetic maps up to 17°N, acquired from the Geological Survery of India, have been manually redigitised at 6 minute intervals to study the long wavelength anomalies over peninsular India. These data have been collected at different survey altitude, epochs, flight line directions, etc. Great care has been taken to correct the total field map and remove the contribution due to the core field and prepare an accurate crustal anomaly map. For the first time, a regional map, depicting the NW-SE structural features north of the orthopyroxene isograd with the essentially E-W features to the south of it and revealing several well known structures, is presented. The analytical signal is calculated to delineate the source fields of these anomalies. It dramatically maps the charnockites and is able to delineate the orthopyroxene isograd. In the Dharwar region the magnetic signatures are associated with the intrusives/iron ore bodies. Source rocks of the aeromagnetic anomalies are the host province of charnockites in the SGT and the intrusives/iron ore bodies in the Dharwar belt. Gravity residuals are calculated and a tectonic map of the region is presented from the combined geopotential data.

Stretched-coordinate ocean general circulation model has been designed to study the observed variability due to wind and thermodynamic forcings. The model domain extends from 60°N to 60°S and cyclically continuous in the longitudinal direction. The horizontal resolution is 5° x 5° and 9 discrete vertical levels. First a spin-up experiment has been done with ECMWF-AMIP 1979 January mean fields. The wind stress, ambient atmospheric temperature, evaporation and precipitation have been used in order to derive mechanical and thermodynamical surface forcings. Next, the experiment has been extended for another 30 years (3 cycles each of 10 year period) with varying surface boundary conditions (from January 1970 to December 1988 of ECMWF-AMIP monthly fields for each cycle) along with 120 years extended spin-up control run's results as initial conditions. The results presented here are for the last 10 years simulations. The preliminary results of this experiment show that the model is capable of simulating some of the general features and the pattern of interannual variability of the ocean.

Influence of roughness of the interface and the over-consolidation ratio of Burland's β is reported in this paper based on the modified direct shear test results on three fine grained soils and five solid surfaces of different roughness. An empirical correlation between the friction angle and roughness has been obtained for the evaluation of friction angle under drained condition. Burland's β strongly depends on the roughness of the interface and the overconsolidation of the soil. The need to account for the roughness of the interface in estimating the shear resistance is brought out.
