Association of plant roots with mycorrhizal fungi is a key factor in the below ground network essential to ecosystem function. Screening of VA-mycorrhizae in some rare/endangered and endemic medicinal plants has been carried out in Dharawad district of Karnataka Ten selected rare, endangered and endemic plants were selected for the study. Most of the examined plants showed varied percent of VAM colonization, i.e., highest in Madhuca indica, leucas mukerjiana, Dioscorea deltoideae and Phyllanthus talbotti, moderate in Ceropegia sps and Indigofera constricta and lowest in Cyanotis burmanniana and Santalum album. Altogether 28 different VAM spores were recorded including Glomus mossea, Glomus fasciculatum, Glomus macrocarpum, Glomus aggregalum, Glomus geosporum, Glomus clarum, Glomusconstrictum, Acaulospora nicolsoni. Acaulosporamellea. Acaulospora foreata. Scleorocystis sinosa, Sclerocystis dussi, Gigaspora albida and Scutellispora gergaria. Most of the soil samples exhibited quite higher number of spores. The results revealed that organic matter and soil temperature did not alter the spore number, whereas increased phosphorus concentration in the soil samples decreases the spore population. Importance of VAM with medicinal plants and other ecological factors has been discussed.

Wayanad district of Kerala state, India, has the highest concentration of tribals in Kerala and they constitute one-fifth of the total population of this district. Kuruma and Paniya tribes prefer to live on hilltops or near paddy fields in small colonies comprising 10-12 huts. Ethnobotanical Studies were conducted in Mutharikunnu Paniya colony and Puthoorvayal Kuruma and Paniya colonies. Edible plants belonging to Amaranthaceae and Araceae famlies used by these two tribes were collected and identified and the data were documented. A total of 15 taxa have been identified and recognized as being used by Kuruma and Paniya of Wayanad district. The Amaranthaceae comprise 10 taxa and the Araceae 5 belonging to 4 genera of each family.

Light intensity and quality are integral part of the environment that affect the physiology of cells and growth and development of the whole plant. Excessive, deficient and inappropriate spectral distributions of light can be defined as stress to the integrated plant system, having deleterious effects. More than required quantities of photosynthetically active radiations i.e., PAR (400-700 nm) and increased absorption of UV-radiations produce radiation stress in plants. The biosphere receives solar radiations at wavelength ranging from 290 nm - 3000 nm. Ultraviolet spectrum can be divided into three regions UV-A (320-400 nm), UV-B (280-320 nm) and UV-C (200-280 nm). Studies of ultraviolet radiations on plants mainly focus on UV-B radiations because UV-C is completely absorbed by the atmosphere and UV-A has no detrimental impact on plant architecture and functions. Leaves are the perception sites for incoming radiations. UV stress is a complex oxidative stress inducing the production of various Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in plants, these generated ROS serve to modify metabolism and gene expression so that plant may evolve mechanisms to respond to adverse environmental conditions.

Minimum juice percentage (34.57%) and TSS (7.33° Brix) was recorded in cv Washington Navel Orange while cv Lane Late Navel Orange shows minimum number of fruits (41/pl.) and yield (12.45 kg/pl.).

The lowest performance was recorded in cv Blood Red Malta i.e. number of fruits (144.37/ plant), yield (25.22 kg/plant), plant height (3.27 m) and rag content (35.65 gm)/fruit. In cv Blood Red mutation minimum fruit weight (165.25 gm/fruit) and canopy (16.02 m³) was recorded.

This paper deals with indigenous knowledge on wild edible plants used by the Adi tribes residing along the banks of Siang river towards South Western Boundary of DDBR. About 150 wild plant species are utilized by these tribes for various purposes; of these, about 85 plant species are found to be edible. Among these, most of the species are utilized as vegetables and fruits, while a few are used as medicine and for other needs.

Nutritive value of Hippophae rhamnoides (Seabuck-thorn) berries and seeds collected from a few prominent locations of Uttarakhand Himalaya were analysed. Fresh fruit berries and seeds were collected from randomly selected healthy mother plants (15 plants) from Mana, Niti, Bhyundar, Gangotri and Yamunotri valleys of Garhwal Hills for determining the various bio-chemical constituents. The nutritional value, biochemical constituent assessment (acidity, fat, lignin, carbohydrate, reducing sugar, starch, protein, etc.) and the mineral composition analysis (nitrogen, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium arsenic, etc.) were carried out using standard analytical techniques. These analyses revealed that the fruits and seeds from the Gangotri valley possess higher nutritive value in terms of fat, protein, carbohydrate, reducing sugars and lignings, and those from the Mana valley possess higher starch and acidity content. The fruits and seeds of Gangotri valley are also rich in the macro and micronutrient element composition. These findings have important connotations in light of up-coming organic foods and nutriceutical industries in the state.

Five genotypes of ricebean were grown at the University Research Farm during kharif 2003 and 2004. Correlation coefficients between (i) length of side leaflet, (ii) breadth of side leaflet, (iii) length of top leaflet, (iv) breadth of top leaflet, (v) area of side leaflet, (vi) area of top leaflet and (vii) total area obtained from two years' data were highly significant and positive. Regression equations and their respective R² values worked out for each genotype and over the genotypes for the estimation of leaflet area (side or top) or total leaf area using measurements for i-iv revealed a highly reasonable accuracy with the actual area obtained from leaf area meter (Systronics-321). Equation obtained following full model multiple regression was : vii=14.11+5.68 (i)+5.68 (i)+9.38 (ii)+0.40 (i x ii)-9.77 (iii)-4.16 (iv)+1.28 (iii x iv). Length x breadth of side leaflet and breadth of top leaflet appeared most significant predictor variables as both R² and adjustable R² values were 0.99. The equation there would be : vii=-14.03+1.38 (i x ii)+6.57 (iv).

Analysis indicates that eight species are referred for stomach, four for skin and two for liver diseases, cough and cold, toothache and urinary disorders. For a number of ailments like spermatorrhoea, gonorrhoea, insanity, heart diseases, pneumonia, wound, leprosy and insomnia, the same species also find use as galactagogues. blood purifiers, anthelmintics and aphrodisiacs; only one plant species is referred to be effective. Some uses are reported for the first time.

Both pods per plant as well as seed yield exhibited negative and significant correlation with days to flowering. Significant negative association of seed neurotoxin, ODAP with 100 seed weight and pods per plant and positive correlation with days to flowering in different varieties and mutant lines suggested induction of early flowering and enhancement of pod production in combination with bold size of seeds can improve seed yield with reduction in seed ODAP content in grass pea.

Rhizosphere and phyllosphere organisms isolated from vanilla consisted of predominant colonizers such as Fusarium sp. (24 isolates) and Colletotrichum sp. (20 isolates). Other organisms wereRhizoctonia sp. (two isolates), Trichoderma spp. (seven isolates), Paecilomyces sp. (one isolate), Mucor sp. (three isolates), non-sporulating fungal species (10 isolates) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (three isolates). When tested in vitro, six isolates showed more than 50% inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae. These were two isolates of Trichoderma sp. (53.30-70.58), one isolate of Paecilomyces sp. (65.00%) and two isolates of P. fluorescens (59.15-62.50%) that were antagonistic to the pathogen. None of the non-pathogenic Fusarium species tested showed promising inhibitory effect on F. oxysporum f. sp. vanillae. The five promising isolates were tested in planta by challenge inoculation. Paecilomyces sp. provided 100 per cent protection against root rot. T. harzianum and P. fluorescens provided 40% protection. Thus the study indicated the possibility of using Paecilomyces sp. as a potential antagonist for F. oxysporum f. sp. vanillae.

Anabaena PCC 7120 strain is sensitive to Ni^{2+ and Cd2+ and growth rates at various concentrations of these metals were assessed in terms of protein level. Tolerance limits for Ni2+ and Cd2+ are 1.2 mg L-1 (39% level in growth kinetics) and 1.2 mg L-1 (48.99% level in growth kinetics), respectively. Absorption/adsorption kinetics was estimated after 240 hrs of heavy metal treatments. For both the heavy metals, absorptions were higher than adsorption. Metal concentration and absorption were linearly related (r = 0.99; p>0.01). Sugar and pigment exhibited reduction due to heavy metal stress.}

Flouting all norms of dumping hazardous solid wastes of diverse kinds, wastes deposited at Abu drain of Meerut, yielded a bacterial count of 5.9 x 10^{8 CFU/GM on nutrient agar and other media. Parthenium hyterophorus L., a native of tropical America and invasive to several countries including India was evaluated for its allelopathic potential of dried plant parts ie. root, stem, leaf and reproductive organs on seed germination and post emergence growth of Black gram Phaseolus mungo var. T-9. The experiment was conducted in pot conditions. It was observed that reproductive part of Parthenium exerted strong allelopathic effects followed by stem, leaf and root on reductions in seed germination at 11 days after sowing were 9.24%, 8.10%, 6.86% and 4.30%, respectively. Post emergence growth was observed at 35 days after sowing. Significant reduction was found in shoot dry weight, root dry weight, nodule dry weight and root nodule number.

Vaucheria undulata Jao of the section corniculatae of class Xanthophyceae has been collected from flower beds of one of the resident's house near Bhagat Barzulla, Srinagar (the summer capital of J&K state) during Nov., 2003. The present alga exhibited prominent features. i.e. spiralled siphons with lamellose oospore wall. Ecologically it preferred to grow in highly alkaline (pH 9.2), sand silty soil with 14 per cent of moisture and temperature ranging from 15-20° C. The present alga has been collected for the first time from India i.e. Srinagar, J&K state and constitutes a new record.

Allelopathic effect of ursolic acid, a secondary metabolite obtained from the leaves of Canthium dicoccum on the germination, growth and some physiological aspects of green gram (Vigna radiata) cultivar KM-2 was investigated in this study. The negative influence on the green gram was maximum in ursolic acid treated plants (2.0mm) than control was evident from the bioassay and pot culture studies. The inhibition of seed germination and the decrease of seedling growth increased with increasing concentration of ursolic acid was very well understood from the morphometric measurement on root, shoot length, leaf area and biomass. Correspondingly the total number of lateral roots and the number of root nodules were very much reduced proportionately with increasing concentrations of ursolic acid treatment. There was considerable reduction in the level of photosynthetic pigments, total sugars, starch as well as soluble protein in the treated plants. The increased level of Malondialdehyde (MDA) suggested the negative influence of test solutions on membrane integrity and the increased activity of the oxidative enzymes such as Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and Peroxidase (PO) through light on the production of enzymes to over come the effect of stress produced by the allelo chemical.

Parasitic plants namsly, Dendrophthoe falcata^ (L.f.) Ettingsh of Loaranthaceae and Cassythafiliformis L. of Lauraceae infesting the plants of Pondicherry Engineering College Campus at Pillaichavady were studied. They were growing on various hosts causing extensive damage to gardens and forest plants. Dendrophthoe was found growing on 26 species of angiosperms of which 22 were trees and 4 were shrubs, Cassytha, a leafless parasite was found growing on 20 species of which seven were trees, four shrubs, five climbers and four herbs. The parasite, Dendrophthoe was growing luxuriantly on exotic plants such as Cassia siamea, Acacia auriculiformis, A. holosericea and Samanea saman whereas the Cassytha was found on indigenous plants such as Azadirachta indica, Cissus vitiginea, Benkara malabarica and Syzygium cumini. Both are non host specific, but show preferential growth on certain hosts was evident from their morphological manifestation. The growth of Dendrophthoe on Moringa oleifera is reported for the first time and is a new host recorded.

CCC at its optimal concentration of 500 μg/ml exhibited better growth and increased the yield while ethrel at its optimal concentration of 100 μ/ml improved the yield. In the experiment CCC registered better growth performance than ethrel.

GA₃ was applied as pre-sowing seed soaking treatment. The combined effect of G A₃ and CCC registered better performances in all the parameters than either of the two compounds acted alone. GA₃ (500 μg/ml) in combination with CCC (500 ug/ml) recorded better growth and yield.

Presents a comparative study of convective type solar drying and open sun drying of useful medicinal plant leaves viz, Adhatoda vasica. The study involves analysis of drying characteristics of Adhatoda on the basis of variation of moisture content, moisture ratio, drying rate, critical moisture content, drying time and total energy required for drying. Adhatoda vasica was dried from 72% to 0.32% moisture content (wet basis) and has been observed that convective solar dryer reduced drying time by 10 hours in comparison to open sun drying. Critical moisture content was achieved in 10 hours and 17 hours in convective solar dryer and open sun drying respectively. Total useful energy required for drying the product has been found to be 0.84 MJ. The performance of dryer is evaluated by some parameters viz. temperature variation inside the dryer, efficiency and economic accessibility of dryer. The average efficiency of the dryer was 52% more compared to open sun drying and the annual cost of drying per kg of product has been found to Rs 16.99.

Stevia is versatile herb with incredible sweetness that can be safely used in herbal medicines; tonics for diabetic patients and also in the daily usage products. Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni is a small perennial herb of the family Asteraceae and it's a single sweetener has antidiabetic properties. Its sweetening power ranges from 100-300 times more than sucrose. The sweet compounds found in Stevia leaves are diterpene glycosides (Steviol glycosides), which are synthesized in the initial stages. Tissue Culture Technique has been adopted as an alternative method for rapid arid large scale multiplication of Stevia rebaudiana for attaining market demand. Multiple shoots were obtained from callus obtained through leaves of Stevia when cultured on Murashige and Skoog's (1962) (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0-4.0 mg/1 BAP and 0.5-1.0 mg/1 NAA. These regenerated shoots when cultured on MS medium Supplemented with 2.0 mg/1 BAP gave maximum shoot multiplication rate (10-12 folds). Rooting of these in vitro regenerated shoots were obtained on MS medium supplemented with 0.5-2.0 mg/l IBA.

Kolleru (16°15' and 16° 30' N and 81° 00' and 81° 25' E) is located the deltas of Godavari and Krishna rivers. The drainage area of this lake has been identified as the area pesticides and fertilizers are intensively used. In turn the ecosystem of the lake gradually degraded. In the present study hydrographical and climatic observations were made at 4 different stations of the lake during various seasons of 2007. Physico- chemical studies reveals that accumulation of high amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in the Kolleru lake. 49 algal forms including micro algae and macro algae reported in this study. Dominant forms in macro algae were Chara, Oedogonium, Spirogyra, Ulothrix and Zygnema. In microalgae, Chlorella, Scenedesmus, Volvox, Pediastrum, Melosira, Navicula, Nostoc and Spirulina were dominant forms during winter season. Among the algal flora, some pollution indicator species were also reported in this lake. Presence of increased amount of N and P and pollution indicator species reflects some levels of pollution in the lake, if it continues further without any control, it may leads to eutrophication.

Germination with and without scarification treatments was studied in freshly collected and one year old seeds of Mimosa himalayna. The results indicated that seeds of this species are dormant due to impermeability of their seed coat to water. The dormancy may be terminated to a little extent during dry storage. However, scarification treatments resulted in the termination of the dormancy. Mechanical and chemical scarifications proved most effective treatments.

Simultaneous administration of tulsi (100 ppm) reversed the above biochemical parameters, indicating tulsi has ameliorative efficacy in subacute toxicity of lead.

The effect of arbuscular-mycorrhiza on uptake and translocation of heavy metals by guar (Cyarnopsis tetragonaloba L. Taub.) was investigated in soil contaminated by low and high concentrations of heavy metals viz., Zn, Cu, Cd and Ni. The plants were inoculated with four different AM fungi viz., Acaulospora denticulata, Gigaspora albida, Glomus albidurn and Sclerocystis sinuosa. AM colonization was not affected by lower metal concentrations and it was observed up to 77% with a G. albida + 2 dose of Zn. High soil concentrations of Ni and Cd reduced percentage of root colonization and dry biomass of guar plants. Mycorrhizal plants grew better but growth of mycorrhizal guar plants in heavy metal toxicated soil remained equal to those of uninoculated, non-contaminated control. Accumulation of heavy metals was higher in roots than in leaves. These results indicate the possibilities of using mycorrhizal fungi for extraction of heavy metals from polluted soil which were retained in the fungal structures and restricts subsequent metal transfer to host plant.

Comparatively, extracts showed significant antifungal activity with specific standard (fluconazole) and moderate antibacterial activity with specific standard (ciprofloxacin).
