Species diversity, relative dominance and spatial distribution of woody plant species in the high hills of Western Himalayas were studied. The study area was poor in species diversity, both in terms of species richness, and evenness. The highest values of Shannon's index were 1.984 and 2.136 for trees and shrubs respectively. Maximum sites were having lower values of Jaccard's index (J') and higher values of concentration of dominance (Cd). Evenness in the shrub communities was more as compared to tree communities. Twenty of the 24 sites were dominated by conifers. Pinus gerardiana dominated maximum number of sites (8) followed by Cedrus deodara (6 sites). Most of the species were contagiously distributed in most of the communities and only a few had random or regular distribution.

Foliar spraying of field grown lentil plants with paclobutrazol (PBZ-5, 10 and 20 μg/ml) significantly suppressed plant height but increased the number of primary and secondary branches with a consequent enhancement in seed yield through increased number of pods per plant. PBZ enhanced total dry matter of plants, partitioning coefficient and harvest index. The leaves in PBZ treated plants were dark green and showed higher total chlorophyll content. The levels of total soluble sugars, amino acids and proteins were also higher in seeds harvested from PBZ treated plants.

Br. and Toddaliaasiatica var, floribunda Lam. collected from Marudhamalai hills, in Western Ghats was evaluated in increasing order of polarity solvents such as petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethanol and hot water. The significance of plants and the importance of chemical constituents are discussed with respect to the role of these plants in traditional use.

The study was carried out in three forest stands - S1, S2 and S3, located at 1900m, 2600 m and 2800 m elevations, in Darjeeling. The stands harboured the typical broadleaved species of the East Himalayan Moist Temperate forests. Vegetation analysis for trees and saplings was carried out by quadrat method and the density (D), basal area (BA) and diversity were evaluated. A total of 24 tree species were recorded, of which SI had 13 species (D-740 ha^{-1, BA-48.23 m2 ha-1) and was dominated by Castanopsis purpurella. At S2, there were 12 species (D-840 ha-1, BA - 63.04 m2 ha-1) with dominance of Lithocarpus pachyphylla and Rhododendron spp. At S3, there were 9 species (D-620 ha-1, BA-30.33 m2 ha-1) with Cryptomeria japonica and Rhododendron spp. dominating. The sapling layer was poorer in comparison with a total of 16 species. There were only 8, 9 and 5 species at SI, S2 and S3, respectively and the density ranged between 480 ha-1 and 900 ha-1. Both the trees and saplings showed low similarity values between the stands and a predominantly random distribution pattern. The tree and sapling diversity ranged between 2.917 - 3.385 and 2.305 - 3.026, respectively.}

The land use pattern in the catchment of suburban wetland (Chatlam) in Kashmir Himalayan valley is evaluated together with its impact on the ecology of the ecosystem. The wetland environment under varied anthropogenic perturbations is influenced by adjoining 12 hamlets inhabited by about 4000 families in the catchment with human population of 33,000 and cattle head count of 11,800. The assessment of land use practice in the catchment indicates 1330 ha under various agri-horticultural activities involving annual use of 263 metric tons of fertilizers and 1.73 metric tons of pesticides. Saffron cultivation accounts for 79% paddy, 14% and the rest under willow/popular cultivation. The combined effect, of intensive agriculture practices, expanding urbanization together with unsustainable exploitation of wetland resources have drastically altered the environmental status of the wet land. Reduction in the wet land area from 44 to 39 ha with inherent potential of avifaunal habitat deteriofation is a measure environmental concern. The paper stresses the need for proper catchment area treatment and ecological rehabilitation of the ecosystem.

Cymbidium pendulum Sw. with its beautiful purple colored flowers is considered as one of the floriculturally important orchid. This highly popular orchid is on the verge of extinction because of heavy collection by local people from its naturally growing habitat. Proper conservation strategies are need of the hour and embryo culture in vitro provides an excellent opportunity to preserve this endangered orchid by propagating rapidly in short time span. Immature embryos derived from green capsules were successfully cultured on M and MS media supplemented with different combinations of plant growth regulators. The present study indicated that the best seed germination response and shoot development were observed in basal culture medium (M or MS) supplemented with AC. Rooting was maximum in NAA enriched medium with activated charcoal while IBA produced conducive environment for proper culture growth and development in vitro. Complete seedlings with 2-3 leaves and 1-2 roots were successfully hardened and established in the green house. This in vitro regeneration protocol may be effectively utilized as one of the conservation method by rapidly mass propagating the plants at a shorter time duration.

Floating water fern, Azolla has a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen fixing bacteria. An Azolla plant (generally called a frond) consists of a main stem (main rhizome) which has alternate leaves and adventitious roots at regular intervals. The main mode of reproduction is vegetative. This process occurs when a frond reaches a certain size. Secondary stems (lateral rhizomes) detach from the main stem as a result of formation of an abscission layer. The young plant with rhizomes, leaves and roots are called daughter fronds which live independently or in cluster. The fronds have definite life span. They undergo clonal senescence. There is also clear indication of senescent changes in leaves (leaf senescence). It is still not clear whether the senescence is controlled by environmental risk factors or due to intrinsic changes or by both the factors.

Metabolomics, the time related qualitative and quantitative analysis of metabolome is a new paradigm of research bridging the phenotype-genotype gap and linking gene to function. It has great potential for the improvement of the compositional quality of crops. Metabolomics involves non-biased identification and quantification of all metabolites in a biological system at a specific time and enable large-scale and parallel interrogation of cell states under different stages of development and defined environmental conditions to reveal novel interactions among various pathways using a new array of analytical methodologies and technologies, particularly the GC-TOFMS (Gas Chromatography with Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry) and LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry). FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopy provide rapid and non-destructive high-throughput methods. The strategies in metabolomics involve metabolite profiling, metabolic fingerprinting and metabolite target analysis. The success of plant metabolomics depends on collection and preprocessing the data for direct comparison of data sets from comparative analyses; processing and mining the data to extract the components of interest; presenting complex data in a readily understandable way using dedicated visualization strategies and data basing for efficient data storage. Metabolomics rely heavily upon bioinformatics for the storage, retrieval, and analysis of large data sets. Basic tools align, visualize, and differentiate components in large data sets. Individual components are then correlated and placed in metabolic networks or pathways and used to model and simulate pathways for a better understanding of biological and biochemical phenomena and functional genomics in an ecosystem and systems biology as well.

With this main perspective the present study was undertaken to evaluate the Hepatoprotective activity in medicinal plants. The Hepatoprotective effect of Ethyl acetate, ethanol and aqueous extracts of Picrorhiza kurroa at various concentrations was assessed in galactosamine and LPS induced mice model systems. The magnitude of toxic and protective effect was assessed via SGOT, SGPT, Total Bilirubin, Cholesterol and Triglycerides. Pretreatment of Ethyl acetate (100 mg/Kg b.wt) and aqueous extracts (30 mg/Kg b.wt and 100 mg/Kg b.wt) significantly prevented the toxin induced alteration and maintained the animals at normal status.

The antibacterial, activity of leaves and stem extracts of Avicennia marina, were evaluated using Soxhelt extraction method. Ethanol was used as solvents in order to get the plant extracts. The antibacterial activity was screened by using disc diffusion technique against pathogenic bacterial species of Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis. The diameter of inhibition zone was measured in millimeters from the centre of the disc. Leaves were showed strong inhibition compared to stem extracts on all tested bacterial strains. Phytpchemical screening revealed that leaf and stem of A. marina contained tannins, alkaloids, steroids, sugar, reducing compound, saponins, quinine, phenolic compounds and flavonoids.

Sarpagandha Rauvolfia serpentina L. Benth is most important medicinal plant. The dried roots of Rauvolfia species have one of the important crude used in morden medicines i.e. rescrpine, rescinnamine, deserpidine, ajmalicine/ajmaline etc are the pharmacologically important alkaloids. The present study entitled in vitro callus induction and regeneration was conducted at Dr.PDKV., Akola (M.S.) revealed that callus induction was observed at all the concentration of 2, 4-D. More callusing was observed with higher concentration of 2, 4-D. Maximum growth rate of callus (90.68%) on MS + 2, 4-D (4 mg/I) after 30 day of sub-culture (on fresh weight basis) and minimum callus (22.73%) observed on MS + 2,4-D (1 mg/l) for the regeneration of shoots out of 30 combination of BAP and IAA. The maximum regeneration percentage of shoots (30%) was observed on MS+BAP (2 mg/l) + IAA (0.5 mg/l).

(i) Madras Presidency of British period comprising most of Southern India (ii) Madras State of India after independence comprising present day Tamil Nadu, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala (iii) the present day Tamil Nadu (old name Madras State) and (iv) the present day Chennai city (old name Madras City). This has created utter confusion about the actual distribution of these and many such plants. A detailed search and study of materials available in all relevant herbaria and critical evaluation of earlier literature revealed that the species mentioned in this paper eventhough reported as occurring in Tamil Nadu has never ever been collected from that area. The present paper aims at setting the records straight so that further confusion can be avoided.

An efficient method for in vitro clonal propagation of the medicinally important plant species Cajanus cajan L, Millsp were described. The shoot lets were regenerated from three day seedlings of nodal explants through axillary shoot proliferation. The induction of multiple shoots from nodal segments was the highest in MS medium supplements with BA 1.5 mg/l. For rooting different concentrations of auxin tested, highest rooting percentage (97.66) was recorded on half strength MS medium with 0.2 mg/l IBA. The rooted plantlets were hardened and successfully established in soil.

Life of the red cotton bug Dysdercus cingulatus in the laboratory consists of egg five nymphal instars and adult stages. Neem application causes prolongation of the nymphal period to 13-14 days as against 4-5 days in controls. Various deformities are seen in the fifth instar nymphs arid newly emerged adult insects. The adult show antennal deformity. Antennal deformities have appeared in the fifth instar nymphs onwards. At high dosages, nymphs failed to emerge resulting in their mortality. Clerodendron application causes prolongation of the nymphal period to 14-15 days as against 4-5 days in controls. The adults show deformities on the hind pair of wings. The hind wings of newly emerged adult insects became short and twisted inside, but the forewirigs remained intact. Neem application deleteriously affected on egghatchability and fecundity. Excessive doses induced permanent sterility. Clerodendron application reduced the fecundity and percent hatchability of treated insects. Longevity of adult females also found to be shortened. Quantitative studies shows that plant extract application markedly reduce the protein concentration of the ovaries of D.cingulatus. Significant reduction in the total ovarian proteins was seen in 2 day and 4-day-old adult insects.

Mycorrhiza refers to an association or symbiosis between plants and fungi that colonize the cortical tissue of roots during periods of active plant growth. The association is characterized by the movement of plant-produced carbon to the fungus and fungal-acquired nutrients to the plant.In the present investigation,samples were provided by Centre for Mycorrhizal and Research Centre Lab. The Energy and resources institute (TERI), New Delhi. Overall experimental set up was under two sub categories:Farmer practice (FP) and Zero fertilization (Fo). In both the categories seven different samples were analyzed for two parameters i.e. Root colonization and Spore count. The samples were analysed for AM spore count and mycorrhizal colonization in the roots. Permanent slides of AM fungal were prepared in poly vinyl lacto glycerol. AM fungal spores were detected in all the samples. No of spores varied from 40 to 720. The lowest value of root colonization recorded was 6% and the highest value recorded was 65%.

Saprophytic fungi are the largest group of fungi; they grow on dead organic matter such as fallen trees, low patties, dead leaves and even dead insects and animals. They attack only dead organic matter. Saprophytes are in good measure responsible for the decomposition of plant and animal residue in natural ecosystems. The adverse effect of isoproturon was noticed on the mycelial growth of Alternaria isolate. No adverse effect of isoproturon on the colony diameter of this fungus was observed in the agar medium. The adverse effect of pendimethalin was noticed on the mycelial growth of three fungi, namely Penicillium sps-2, curvularia and Rhizopus.

Jhargram Raj College campus is a large campus occupying southwest corner of the town Jhargram under West Midnapore district. A preliminary survey and systematic enumeration assessed the wild as well as cultivated plants growing in the campus and adjoining areas revealed that the campus is floristically rich along with the rich and diverse fauna. In the campus 364 angiosperm species have been reported of which 326 are dicots and 38 are monocots. They belong to 106 families (90 dicots and 16 monocots) and 277 genera (244 dicots and 33 monocots). Family Asteraceae with 17 species occupies 1st position followed by Rubiaceae at 2nd position having 13 species. Euphorbiaceae is 3rd in position with 12 species whereas Apocynaceae with 10 species occupies 4th position and Amaranthaceae with 13 species occupies 5th position. Family Poaceae occupies 1st position among monocots with 07 genera and 08 species followed by Araceae with 04 genera and 04 species. In addition to the above species, 01 gymnosperm and 08 pteridophytic species have been found in this study area with significant floristic diversity.

Cymbidiopsis is allied to Cymbidium Swartz but differs in habit, vegetative characters as well as in flower structure. Besides unlike the genus Cymbidium, Cymbidiopsis has flowers with 4 pollinia in 2 unequal pairs and lip with 2 callus ridges converging to form a short tube at the base of the mid-lobe.
