Data collected revealed that 44 species belonging to 43 genera and 36 families of flowering plants and ferns are being used by these tribes.

Muniandavar Sacred Groves from Vaduvakudi at Thiruvaiyaru Taluk, Thanjavur district of Tamil Naduwas selected for floristic exploration to know the plant diversity of the vegetation,the availability of rare and endangered floras, the ecological significance,regeneration status and the anthropogenic pressures, to document the religiousbeliefs and spirituality and the participation of locals on conservation. In the present study, theflora of Muniandavar Sacred Groves comprises about 180 plant species belongingto 158 genera and 75 plant families, Key stone species available in the Sacredgroves includes Anacardium occidentale, Borassus flabellifer, Ficusbenghalensis that harbors a number of birds and other survival of many otherspecies. Muniandavar sacred grove is in good vegetation status and theconservationists should take necessary action to protect this grove fromplastic pollution. An environmental awareness programme is planned to conductfor the local people in order to safeguard this sacred grove from pollution.

Deals with the structure and distribution of trichomes on the mature cypselar surface, with the help of both light microscopic and some with SEM observation. On the basis of the distribution of trichomes, 54 species of Compositae were studied. Among the studied cypselas, in maximum cases, non-glandular trichomes are present (Lactuca pseudoumbrella, Cichorium intybus, Lactuca serriola, Pieris hieraciodes, Leontodon crisp us, Leontodon muelleri, Crepis neglecta, Crepis foetida, Crepis dioscoridis, Solidago gigantean, Solidago Canadensis etc.). In few cypselas (Vernonia stenolepis, Vernonia cinerea, Vernonia anthelmintica), both glandular and non-glandular trichomes are present. It has been observed by many workers that trichomes from the vegetative as well as reproductive parts can be used successfully for the delimitation of genera and species within the family Compositae (Asteraceae). However, broad comparative studies of cypselar trichomes are scarce or lacking. The usefulness of nonglandular hairs of the ovary for the taxonomic purposes is discussed. Finally, a classification regarding the features of trichome has been constracted.

The aim of the study is to screen the grasses of South India for mineral nutrition. The results revealed that the grass species accumulate the major and minor elements at different concentrations. The maximum concentration (ppm) of macroelements in the analysed samples were 12270, 31310, 5309 and 3946 for Ca, K, Mg and P respectively. The maximum concentrations (ppm) of microelements were 50.05, 89.68, 2452, 258.3, 64.01 and 76.05 for B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn respectively. 22% of ash content and 4192 cal/g of calorific value were found. The levels of macro and micro elements determined of the grasses were analysed by using ICP - OES. Elemental studies of the grass species revealed that large amounts of major and minor elements were rich in Aristida hystrix and Echinochloa colonum, which may be suggested for livestock feeding.

Antibacterial activity of the two honey samples produced by the honey bee (Apis florea), was standardized by Disc diffusion method. The two honey samples were tested at three concentrations (5, 10 and I5μ1 v/v) and zone of inhibition were measured against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli; Basil/us subitis, Pseudomonas putida and Klebsiela pneumonia; unifloral and multifloral honey samples were effected in inhibiting the growth of the gram positive and Gram negative organisms at (15 /μ v/v). The inhibitory effect of unifloral honey on (I5μl) Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; and multi floral honey on E. coli were comparable to that of Amphicillin (10μg/l0μl). In conclusion, natural honey can be employed in treating, some common diseases especially those caused by the tested microorganisms and carry the potential of introducing new template into modern medicinal biology.

The present study investigated the antioxidant and antiproliferative efficacy of Andrographis paniculata, a well-known medicinal plant, using in vitro systems. The dried leaves of A. paniculata were powdered and subjected to successive solvent extraction taking from polar to non-polar solvents (descending polarity) and simultaneously from non-polar to polar solvents (ascending polarity). Solvents used for extraction were hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and water. All the extracts were screened for the presence or absence of various secondary metabolites. The antioxidant activity of all extracts at 100 μg/ml was evaluated by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Further DPPH assay and reducing power assay were used to check the free radical scavenging capacity of methanolic and water extracts at their lower concentrations. The methanolic and water extracts of A. paniculata exhibited maximum DPPH inhibition of 20.75% and 17.71% respectively, at 100 μg/ml. A positive correlation between reducing power and the concentration was found. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) of methanolic and water extracts of A. paniculata was performed. The antiproliferative effect of different concentrations of methanolic and water extracts on C6 glioma cells was investigated by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay. The methanolic extract exhibited 50% inhibition of proliferation of C6 glioma cells at much lower concentration (12.5 μg/ml) than did the water extract (200 μg/ml). This study is a novel approach towards antioxidant and antiproliferative role of methanolic and water extracts of A. paniculata which suggests its anticancer potential

However, the additional specimen of Buchanan-Hamilton cited by him in 1883 is found to be conspecific with B. filiformis C.B. Clarke, with some minor but clear cut differences. Hence this specimen is treated as a new variety of B. filiformis with illustration. The differences between the taxa are elucidated in a tabular form.

They also have certain unique medicinal preparations to treat several diseases. One such preparation is medicinal oils. The present paper deals with one of the medicinal oil prepared by an Ulladan tribal member of Kurumbanmoozhi Colony, Pathanamthitta District. This knowledge is passed from one generation to the next by word of mouth and is not written any where. This is the outcome of constant visits to the colonies and hamlets of Ulladan tribal community in the period, 2011-2012.

Adwani forest situated 18 km away from the Pauri town of Garhwal Himalaya, Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 1750 /102200 m is predominantly angiospermic forest. The vegetation of this forest comprises of two different zones - the Quercus-Pinus zone starts approximately from 1750-1900 m from m.s.1. and forms the lower belt of the forest. The second zone-the Quercus-Rhododendron extends approximately from 1900-2200 m from m.s.1. and form the upper belt of the forest. The specimens were collected from Adwani forest during July 2011 to September 2012. Twenty four taxa representing twelve genera and six families were documented from the area. Of these, seven taxa were edible and consumed in various parts of Uttarakhand and the rest were non-edible or poisonous.

Chemical constituents of roots, stem, leaves and fruits (MB) were analysed using Direct Analysis in Real Time (DART) and Quadrupole- Time of flight high resolution mass spectrometer (QTOF HRMS) techniques and nine therapeutically important compounds Magnoflorine, Ketoberberine, Stigmasterol, Tocopherol, Berbamine, Pakistanamine, Berberine, Jatrrhorizene and Plamatine have been determined. Aloe barbadensis Mill. (Aloe vera L.) has valuable medicinal properties and is commercially used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. An in vitro protocol for micropropagation of Aloe barbadensis Mill. (Aloe vera L.) was developed through shoot tip explants. The comparative effects of different phytohormones and their concentration in poly and shade houses are analysed. Aloe vera L. was grown in different concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2.4-D), Kinetin (KN), Thiodizuron (TDZ), 6- Benzylamino-purine (BAP), 3-Indol butyrique acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). MS medium with 1 mg/l NAA + 0.5 mg/l KN regulator combination was found to be the best for shoot proliferation per explants (88 %). The longest roots were 5.42 and 3.52 em obtained in the medium supplemented with 0.75 mg/l of NAA. Well-developed rooted plantlets were successfully transferred to the soil and they showed 98% survived in the field condition. The regenerated plants were morphologically similar to the mother plants.

Study describes the improvement of previously isolated fungal strain, Aspergillustamarii, for pectinase production by application of multistep mutagenesis using physical (UV irradiation)and chemical agents(Colchicine, Ethidium bromide and Hydrogen peroxide). Mutants obtained after 1st treatment was screened for activity and the high producing strains were selected. The selected 1st generation mutants were treated for two times at same concentration with same mutagen to obtain third generation mutants. The wild/parent strain cultivated in previously determined production media, Citrus peel - groundnut oil cake (CG) showed its maximum activity of pectinase production (59 U/ml). The best mutant identified in third generation mutants after quantitative analysis was H9 having treatment with Hydrogen peroxideat (concentration, 9 μl). This mutant showed 8% increase in pectinase production compared to wild strain when cultivated in the CG production media. Stability of mutant was attained due to repeated mutagenic treatments

Four wild plant species (Chrysthanthemum cornarium, Capparis spinosa, Carthamus lanatus, Haplophyllum tuberculatum) were investigated for their antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoid contents of their methanolic extracts. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was assessed their free radical scavenging properties using DPPH. Total phenolics and total flavonoids were detected by spectrophotometric and HPLC methods. The HPLC analysis compared with 14 reference standard phenolic compounds, results confirmed that gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, 2,5- dihydroxy benzoic acid, and catechin were detected in the four methanolic plant extracts. HPLC chromatograms of the plant extracts showed that there was noticeable valuation in the distribution of phenolic compounds in the four studied species. Six bacterial strains were used in this study, three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative. Concerning with antimicrobial activity, results showed that plant extract of the studied species are a great source of phenolic compounds and represents the highest antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and negative bacteria. Results revealed that extracts represents the highest antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and negative bacteria and largest inhibition zone for bacterial strains were exhibited by the extracts of Haplophyllum tuberculatum (79 mm) followed by that of Capparis spinosa (54mm). However, Chrysthanthemum cornarium extract showed the least inhibition zone (34 mm).

To determine the relationships of essential oil yield with flowering shoot yield, morphological traits and essential oil percentage of two Mentha spicata populations, this six year experiment was conducted at the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, Tehran, Iran, from 1999 to 2004. The experiment was conducted as split plot in time in the form of a randomized complete block design with three replications and two factors: population (from Tehran and Yazd, Iran) as the main factor and year (six years of the plant growth) as the sub factor. Analysis of the variance indicated that for all traits were significant differences among years. For most of the traits there were also significant differences between two populations. Results of Pearson correlation showed that the total essential oil yield was significantly correlated to all other traits except for leaf width and flower essential oil percentage. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that leaf essential oil yield, flower essential oils yield, the number of lateral branches, flower essential oil percentage and stem diameter contributed to more than 96 % of the variations. Path analysis revealed that leaf essential oils yield had the highest positive direct effect (0.76) on the total essential oils yield. Finally, principal component analysis indicated that three components contributed to more than 90 % of the variations

Local strains of Ganoderma lucidum has been analyzed for the appearance of triterpenoids with cultivated G. lucidum as reference. Various strains of G. lucidum were isolated from different and far regions of Himachal Pradesh during 2010 and 2011. The fruiting bodies were obtained by growing them in sawdust after three months of incubation. Analysis of triterpenoids was done by silica gel thin layer chromatography with eleuntof chloroform: methanol (10: 1) for first extract and dichloromethane for the second extract. Detection of triterpenoids was done by spraying the plate with Carr-Price as well as Lieberman-Burchard reagents then observed under UV light (366 nm). Presence of more number of triterpenoids in local strains suggested that local strains of Himachal Pradesh can be exploited further for cultivation at commercial level.

Crude alcohol extract, 50% hydro-alcohol and aqueous extracts of 20 plants species belonging to13 families were screened in vitro for antifungal activity against economically important phytopathogenic fungus, Pythium aphanidermatum which was isolated from infected ginger. Bioassays of the extracts were conducted by "Poisoned food technique" on agar plate culture with triplicates. Sixteen of 20 (80%) plant species showed inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of the tested fungi. Among the 20 plants taken, Jacaranda mimosifolia, Moringa olifera, were giving the best activity with 27.7% inhibition. Polyalthia longifolia and Terminallia arjuna showed 22.2% inhibition. Besides these, Lawsonia inermis, Aegle marmelos, Nigella sativa, Azadirachta indica, also exhibited good inhibitory activity against Pythium aphanidermatum. According to these results, we can conclude that these plants can be regarded as a rich source of metabolites with significant antifungal activity against Pythium. As their crude extracts are giving good results, their purified fractions may have enhanced antifungal activity.

This study reports the presence of phytochemicals and antimicrobial activities of indigenous species of ferns like Odontosoria chinensis, Pteridium revolutum and Dicranopteris lanigera. Phytochemical analysis of methanol and acetone extracted leaf (frond)and stem powder of O. chinensis, P. revolutum and D. lanigera were showed the presence of phytochemicals such as phenol, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, saponins and tannin compounds by using standard methods. The methanol and acetone extracted leaves and stem of these ferns have effective antimicrobial activities against Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus),Gram negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) as well as fungi (Aspergillus flavus &. Fusarium sp). It may due to the presence of broad spectrum of antibiotic compounds present in the selected ferns. Of the three ferns, methanol and acetone extracted leaf powder of D. lanigera showed the highest phytochemicais (phenol (0.36 mg),flavonoids (0.42 mg), alkaloids (0.24 mg), steroids (0.53 mg), saponins (0.34 mg) and tannin (0.20 mg)) antibacterial activity (22 mm / 100 μl) against P.aeruginosa and 20 mm/100 μl against S. aureus. This study also revealed that three ferns leaves have more phytochemicals than stem, because they are main part doing various physiological functions of the plant. These results indicated the greatest potential of these extracts as effective antimicrobial agents.

Being a group of lower plants with restricted distribution these pteridophytes remain unattended and their useful aspects are largely ignored.In the present study an intensive field survey was made in various places, namely, Tantipukur, Joypur, Pansiuli, Basudebpur, Notungram, Belsulia, Katul, Machantala, etc., of Joypur forest range in Bankura district, West Bengal, over a period of 7 months from September 2012 to March 2013. During the course of survey 18 species of ferns and ferns allies were collected and a herbarium was made. The present study deals with the ethno medicinal uses of available pteridophytes which are prevalent in study area, along with their botanical name, family, habitat, plant part used and mode of uses. Much of the information regarding the healing properties of pteridophytes was procured after interacting with tribal people and healers.

An extracellular lipase producing bacterium was isolated from a hot spring water sample and identified as a strain of Pseudomonas stutzeri by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Maximum lipase production by Pseudomonas stutzeri was obtained at pH 8.0 when grown under shaking condition at 60°C for 36 hrs. Although the lipase was active at a temperature range of 45-750C, it exhibited maximum activity at 60°C at pH 8.0. It also showed a broad substrate specificity acting on p-nitrophenyl esters with C8-C18 acyl groups as substrates. While the enzyme retained its activity levels in the presence of a variety of organic solvents, diethyl ether enhanced this. High stability, broad substrate specificity and activity at high temperatures in the presence of organic solvents, and metal ions make the extracellular lipase of Pseudomonas stutzeri a candidate for industrial applications.

Fagonia cretica Linn. is widely distributed in dry lands of India. It has been used in traditional system of medicine as bitter tonic and febrifuge. The whole plant of F. cretica was subjected to macro and microscopical examination followed by physicochemical study. It is small woody herb with tortuous root, highly branched stem, elliptic leaves and purplish coloured flowers. Roots are characterized by lignified cork, cortical fibres, wide phloem and xylem. Stem shows the presence of a group of lignified fibres under epidermis, pericycle (containing discontinuous groups of the fibres and stone cells) and a wide stellar region followed by small pith. Transverse section of the leaf shows palisade cells, centric mesophyll and collateral vascular bundle in midrib. Powder shows the presence of covering trichomes, epidermis, stone cells, sclerenchyma and lignified cork. Saponins, flavanoids and alkaloids were found be major components. TLC study using silica gel plate as a stationary phase and Toluene: Ethyl formate: Formic acid (5: 4: 0.1) as a mobile phase shows the presence of isorhamnetin.

Study examined the floristic diversity, dominance, abundance and IVI of climbers and lianas species in the tropical mangrove vegetation of North Andaman forest. A total of 188 climbing plants belonging to 27 species, 18 genera, and 15 families were identified. The most dominant family is Papilionaceae (25%). The forest is consisted of 18 liana and 9 herbaceous climber species. Hook climbing was the most predominant (40.74%) climbing mechanism. The dominant species recorded from this forest was Calamus palustris (IVI-29.78). Dalbergia junghuhnii shows the highest frequency (81.81%).

Weeds are always considered unwanted plants. Weeds reduce human efficiency through physical discomfort caused by allergies and poisoning. Weeds such as parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus) and rag weed (Limbrosia species) that cause itching, hay fever and other debilitating allergies. Cotton seeds were treated with different concentrations of leaf exudates of parthenium hysterophorus and the biochemical constituents of the treated cotton plant were analysed. The amount of protein, phenol were found to increase in treated plants due to release of protease inhibitors. In addition to this, increase in activity of Nitrate reductase and peroxidase were observed followed by decreased activity of catalase. The plants with higher concentrations of phenol showed resistance to pests and they were healthier compared to the controlled plants. The treated plants also showed some morphological variations.

Their knowledge about biology, properties and conservation of ecosystems is also very rich. They have evolved unique methods for the sustainable use and management of their biodiversity. Each taxon is recognized differently by each tribe and often by the individuals of the same tribe. Gathering of this fact, on a global or even national basis will show more facets of the bioresources than those shown by the taxonomists. Only, we have to shift our attention from what the elements of biodiversity are, to what these elements mean to us and to humanity. This paper mainly focuses on the vast relationship arising out of the faith and cultural diversity of the tribal communities of Dumka with their ambient phyto-diversity.

Tick infestation is a common problem encountered in mithun (Bos frontalis), resulting in reduced productivity besides transmitting infections to the host. Present study on the tick infestation on mithun was undertaken at Jharnapani and Porba mithun farms of the National Research Centre on Mithun (semi-intensive) as well as free ranging condition of Nagaland and Mizoram. Present study showed the ixodid tick of the genus Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus was the most prominent tick infesting mithun in this region. A pilot study was undertaken with crude aqueous extracts of neem and tobacco to evaluate the effect of these plant extracts on the survival of the above tick species. Two synthetic acaricides viz., ivermectin and cypermethrin were also used to compare the efficacy of these acaricides against R. (B). microplus. Crude aqueous extract of the tobacco was found highly efficacious against the tick infestations at a low concentration whereas, neem was found effective at much higher concentration. Ivermectin (1m/50 kg body weight S/C) was the most effective synthetic acaricide against R. (B). microplus in this study.

This research aimed at evaluation of the effects of inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus intraradiaces and G. fasciculatum), rhizobacteria (P-solubilizing Bacillus megaterium and N2-fixing Bradyrhizobium japonicum)-and their interactions on the growth and nutrient content of soybean plants in calcareous soil. The investigation was conducted in potted -soil under greenhouse conditions. Soybean growth was significantly improved by mycorrhizal and/or rhizobacterial inoculation but dual inoculation with both was far more effective. Bradyrhizobium inoculation significantly improeved number and dry weight of nodules, especially in presence of mycorrhizal fungi. The concentrations of macronutrients (N, P and K) and micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn)-in soybean shoots increased due to inoculation with any of the inoculants used but N content was lower in treatments inoculated with mycorrhizae in presence of rhizobacteria in comparison to those receiving mycorrhizae alone. In general, dual inoculation with G. intraradiaces and P-solubilizing - Bacillus megaterium resulted in the best stimulatory effect on soybean growth and nutrient content in calcareous soil.

Aim of this study was to understand the mechanism of potassium release from inert source of potassium (waste mica or vermiculite) inoculated with potassium solubilising bacteria (isolate-101). The isolate was examined for its K solubilising ability and pH change of broth; at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days of incubation and found that solubilisation of K in the mica containing broth was at the rate of 31.6, 38.8, 42.45, 47.92 and 48.1 mg/ml at respective incubation periods. The corresponding pH change in broth was found to be 7.34, 6.44, 6.24, 6.16, 6.15 and 6.15 at respective periods of incubation. Similarly, bacterial inoculation resulted in release of significant amount of K ions in vermiculite amended broth over the uninoculated control. HPLC analysis of the bacterial culture showed the presence of lactic acid and oxalic acid at the rate of 1.89 μl and 3.5 μl per 100 ml of broth respectively. Interestingly, an inverse relationship was found between the pH change and K release from this study and found to be more significant.

Effect of girdling and thinning on fruit maturity and quality of plum cv. Satluj Purple was investigated on twelve year old trees being grown on sandy loam soil planted at a distance of 6x6m.Uniform cultural practices were followed throughout the course of investigation. Limb girdling and thinning was done at full bloom and 7,14,21,28 and 35 days after full bloom. All the girdling and thinning treatments advanced fruit maturity as compared to control. Least number of days taken for maturity were recorded when limb girdling and thinning was done 14 days after full bloom. Yield was found to increase and fruit drop was reduced in all the treatments. Maximum yield, fruit weight and size, pulp/stone ratio, colour and better fruit quality in terms of higher TSS, TSS/acid ratio, β-carotene with lower acidity and firmness were also observed when limb girdling and thinning was done 14 days after full bloom. Healing of the girdle was satisfactory and there was no detrimental effect noticed in any of the treatments. Leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll content were decreased and total carbohydrates were increased with girdling and thinning treatments.

In field experiment also inoculation and combination of three biocontrol agents and two beneficial microorganimsms (Azotobacter chroococcum + Bacillusmegaterium + Pseudomonas fluorescens + Bacillus subtilis + Trichoderma harzianum) have resulted in increased plant height (57.95 cm), number of leaves per plant (25.98), head and curd weight per plant (1.65 and 1.45 kg respectively), head and curd diameter per plant (46.7 and 23.33 cm respectively) and number of leaves covering head and curd (26.45 and 25.98 respectively) in cabbage. It also has resulted in minimum disease incidence.

Deals with; 17 species of nematodes under 12 genera, 8 families and 2 orders (Dorylaimida and Mononchida) from Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. These species of nematodes are recorded for the first time from GWLS, of which Discolaimium simplex Siddiqi, 1965 is new record from Uttarakhand.

Ethno botanical information of Tribal's has been collected from Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh, India during 2008 - 2011. A total of 42 plant species belonging to 37 genera and 30 families were used in traditional medicine to heal different diseases. The present work is an attempt to identify and conserve the medicinal plants in Adilabad district. The study shows a high degree of Ethno botanical novelty and the use of plants among the Tribals of the revival of interest in traditional folk culture.

Solidago dahurica (Kitag.) Kitag. ex Juz. [Asteraceae] is recorded as a new record for Indian flora from Himachal Pradesh. Corydalis stracheyi var. ecristata Prain [Papaveraceae-Fumarioideae], Drymaria villosa Cham. & Schlecht. [Caryophyllaceae] and Juncus allioides Franch. [Juncaceae] are reported as new records for Western Himalayan flora. Eastward extension in distributional limit of Corydalis stracheyi Duthie ex Prain [Papaveraceae-Fumarioideae] is reported from Himachal Pradesh, forming a new record for the state flora. Similarly, Juncus allioides Franch. and J. bufonius L. var. congestus Wahlenb. [Juncaceae] are recorded as additions to the state flora of Himachal and Uttarakhand. Additionally, the presence of hitherto believed Chinese endemic Corydalis adunca Maxim. [Papaveraceae-Fumarioideae] in Indian flora is also confirmed.
