Life history of the vector mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), Anopheles subpictus Grassi, 1899 and Culex quinquefascintus Say, 1823 was studied in four different seasons viz. monsoon, post monsoon, winter and summer in Kolkata, India. It revealed that a freshly laid egg took 6, 9, 10 and 12.5 days in case of Ae. aegypti; 6, 9, 11 and 10.5 days in case of An. subpictus, and 6, 9, 9 and 12 days in case of Cx. quinquefascialus in summer, monsoon, post monsoon and winter respectively to attain the imago stage. The length of developmental period of eggs and I, II, III, IV instar larvae and pupa varied from 1.0-3.5 days in respect to the seasons concerned. The rate of metamorphosis varied to a great extent with the seasons. It is noted that, out of 100 eggs 36, 44, 53 and 64 in monsoon, summer, post monsoon and winter respectively in Ae. aegypti; 30, 30, 34 and 38 in monsoon, winter, summer and post monsoon respectively in An. subpictus, and 33, 46, 59 and 68 in monsoon, summer and winter respectively in Cx. quinquefasciatus attained the imago stage. Mortality rate of the eggs, larvae and pupae also varied with the seasons. On average 6.0, 7.89, 9.4 and 10.6% Ae. aegypti died at each of the six developing stages in winter, post monsoon, summer and monsoon respectively. In An. subpictus such mortality rate was comparatively higher 10.37% in post monsoon, 11.06% in summer, 11.69% in winter and 11.73% in monsoon. Likewise, Cx. quinquefasciatus experienced 5.37, 6.85, 8.92 and 11.14% mortality in winter, summer, post monsoon and monsoon respectively. The effect to seasons on the developing mosquitoes is highly influenced by the physico-chemical parameters like temperature, pH, salinity, alkalinity and acidity of the water used in the culture though such influences are not statistically significant.
