Target specific 51.0 m long wing semi-pelagic trawl developed for optimum exploitation of off-bottom resources in the Indian EEZ was tested onboard FORV Sagar Sampada in combination with 1.5 t `V' form otter board and 50.0 m double bridles in the depth range of 43.0 to 680 m employing three different speeds of tow. The area of experimentation extended between 20° 39' to 21° 37' N Latitude and 69° 11' to 70° 16' E Longitude. Design details of the trawl along with rigging particulars of the gear system are described. A total yield of 3.65 t was realized from 24 hauls made and the average and maximum catch per unit effort amounted to 123.6 and 151.0 kg respectively. 4.0 knot trawling speed was assessed to be the optimum for this gear system. Semipelagic species consisting mainly of Tachysurus sp., Sphyraena sp., Trichiurus sp., Priacanthus hamrur, Megalaspia cordyla, Protonibea diacanthus, Nemipterus japonicus, Polynemus indicus, Saurida tumbil, Scomberomorus sp., Chirocentrus sp., Chorinemus tol, Pseudocaranx dentex, squid and cuttlefish and miscellaneous off-bottom fish constituted over 85% of the total catch, establishing the target specificity of the gear system in landing semi-pelagic fishery resources.

Otterboards, the stabilizing devices for trawl nets while under tow, function as hydrodynamicaly dependent means for holding the trawl mouth open. To be optimally effective, shearing power attained by them should be as high as possible and thier resistance to motion should be as low as possible. As bent or moulded doors meet these requirements, 1407x982 mm Polyvalent and 1350x1000 mm high aspect ratio Suberkrub doors were rigged and experimented with 18.0 m RMT 8P semipelagic trawl having 80% side panels and 20.0 m double bridles to assess the functional eficiency of these combinations in inshore semipelagic trawling practices in the waters off Cochin, onboard 17.5m OAL stern trawler (27hp). Design and operational details of these boards are described along with the catch composition obtained. The catch data analysed using ANOVA technique and done separately for quality fish and other catches, indicated no significant difference between these two designs of otterboards at 5% level, leading to a conclusion that both the designs experimented were equally efficient in combination with 18.0 m semipelagic trawl for the capture of inshore off-bottom resources.

Vedeo-on-demand (VOD) application is a networked multimedia application where the subscribers access a remote server for the multimedia data preferably with VCR operations. These operations impose additional resource requirement on the VOD server in terms of storage space, retrieval throughput and network resources like band width and buffers. In this work, we propose a cost-effective disk-oriented multi-user play-out system with VCR operations. The system uses segmentation of multimedia data into small segments and provides segment-skip mechanism for VCR operations and implementation.

Plate anchors are one of the common types of anchors used in civil engineering construction for resisting uplift forces. A theory is presented for determining the vertical uplift capacity of shallow horizontal circular and strip anchors in general homogeneous c-Φ soil with a surcharge. An earlier theory for strip anchors based on composite failure surface ahs been modified to allow only log-spiral failure surface to reach the ground and the theory has been extended to circular anchors. The efects of cohesion, surcharge and the theory has been extended to circular anchors. The effects of cohesion, surcharge and unit weight on the uplift capacity have been separated and the uplift capacity factors F_c Fq and F_y as functions of embedment ratio and friction angle of soil have been presented. Shape factors for cohesion, surcharge and unit weight for circular anchors have also been presented. Finally, the predictions from the theory have been compared with available experimental and theoretical observations.

The multielectrode ressistivity imaging method has been used to study the coal seam located in the northern part of jharia Coalfield of Dhanbad district. This method has been applied on experimental basis to know the efficacy of this technique. The improvement of resistivity methods using multi-electrode arrays led to an important development of electrical imaging for subsurface surveys Such surveys are usually carried out using a large number of electrodes, i.e.., 48 or more, connected to a multi-core cable. Apparent resistivity measurements are recorded sequentially sweeping any quadripole (current and protential electrodes) within the multielectrode array. As a result, high-definition pseudosections with dense sampling of apparent resistivity variation at depths are obtained in a short time. It allows the detailed interpretation of 2-D resistivity distribution in the ground. In this experimental study, Syscal junior Switch-48 electrode resistivity meter is used for the exploration of the coal seam at east Basuria colliery of Jharia coal field, Dhanbad. Pole-depole configuration of the multielectrode resistivity survey has been carried out along two traverses R1 and R2, which were selected over developed working of coal seam II at an incline mine of the east Basuria Colliery. These traverses lie in dip-rise direction with station interval of 25 m. Coal seam is delineated having high resistivity values ranging more than 989 to 1632 ohm.m at depths varying 10 to 31 m frp, the surface.

In this paper, technique has been suggested to know the quality of mine drainage even before the start of mining operation. The coal and associated rock samples are collected from the mine site. The mineralogical composition and geo-chemical character of each rock types occurring at the site are determined. The geo-chemical properties are measured in terms of R-pH, pollution production potential (PPP) and acid neutralization potential (ANP). The geo-chemical characteristics of various rock types indicate that they have different geo-chemical properties. There is a discrepancy in pH values obtained under laboratory conditions and field data and an explanation is given. On the basis of geo-chemical properties and weathering tests, it is found that except sandstone, all other litho-types such as coal, shale and shaly coal have the potential to deteriorate water quality and whatever the water pollutants present in the mine water are just because of interaction of these rock units with water. It is predicated that drainage from coal, shale, and shaly coal may be acidic, whereas drainage from sandstone is basic. The more or less same patterns are observed in the field. The technique suggested for the prediction of drainage quality may prove helpful and can identify rock types likely to produce water contaminants during their exposure to atmosphere in a mine.

Statnamic load test is considered as one of the most reliable methods for pile load testing. Case history of statnamic vertical load tests on working piles. Two simple aproaches are adopted to analyze the observed results. One is the Unloading Point Method and another is the Segmental Unloading Point Method. The static load-displacement behaviour of pile under vertical loading is obtained by these methods. A comparative study between static compression test and statnamic load test is also presented. The statnamic load test is very simple and fast and the approach promises to be very useful in the prediction of static vertical capacity of pile foundation.

Reports the design equations for FIR filter synthesis by using some recently reported combinational window functions. The performance of these filters is compared with FIR filters designed by using Kaiser window (prolate spheroidal wave function based). We also suggest some corrections in the set of design equations for FIR filter synthesis by using raised cosine window. The variable window functions used in this study other than Kaiser and raised cosine window provide filters with better side lobe fall of rate. This feature can be utilized for better suppression of images associated with interpolators.

Plastic limit determination of soils by thread rolling has often been criticized as crude and susceptible to personal impressions. In contrast, it is well established that liquid limit determination by cone penetrometer is a better method compared to Casagrande method as it is defined in terms of the undrained shear strength of soils. Likewise, determination of plastic limit by the cone penetrometer can be better than thread rolling method if plastic limit is also redefined in terms of undrained shear strength of soils. Details of a method developed for achieving this end has been presented based on the use of the cone penetrometer. The study shows that the results of the method have better correlation with representative results of the thread rolling method. It is the only method that uses the cone penetration values directly for plastic limit determination making it logically consistent with the method of liquid limit determination by the cone penetration method.

Mathematical transformation from (x,y) space to (ξ, η) space map the standard triangle in (x,y) space to a standard 2-spquare in (ξ, η) space: { (ξ, η<124>-1≤ξ, η) ≤1}. This overcomes the difficulties associated with the derivation of new weight coefficients and sampling points and yields results which are accurate and reliable. Results obtained with new formulae are compared with the existing formulae.

New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) aims at timely introduction of tunnel supports design. An earlier support would be uneconomical, whereas, a later stage support could lead to unsafe condition. Thus, timely introduction of support may be decided on the basis of actual observations at the sie during progress of the construction. During a particular time, when it is essential to introduce a support, its proper design should be available. For the purpose of analysis by finite element method a software in Fortran is developed and used. The failur criteria for the rockmass is assumed to be represented by the constitutive law proposed by Hoek and Brown, and after performing stepwise non-linear analysis for the removal of residual stresses, the support system is finalized. To validate the introduced concept, a problem of tunnel design by NATM has been solved, by considering different support systems and their combinations. The failure of the tunnel opening was observed by huge displacements at crown and sidewalls. Hence it is proved that, the method adopted has demonstrated its potential in connection with the decision making with respect to the support system.

A simple method is proposed to design PI controllers for stable inverse response systems with and without delay. The method is based on (i) matching the corresponding coefficient of s in the numerator and in the denominator of the closed loop transfer function for a servo problem , and (ii) by specifying the initial (inverse) jump. This method gives simple equations for controller settings in terms of model parameters. PI controllers are also developed by IMC principles. A numerical optimization method is proposed to obtain the tuning parameters for the simple method. Simulation results are given for robust performance of the controllers for uncertainty in process gain, time constant and the location of zero. The performance of the proposed controllers is evaluated by simulation on nonlinear isothermal CSTR carrying out Van de Vusse reaction.

The study assesses the suitability of inexpensive leaf adsorbents to effectively remediate fluoride-contaminated water. The efficiency of the sorption of fluoride ion is affected by pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, type and size of adsorbents and initial fluoride ion concentration. The adsorption equilibrium is well correlated by Freundlich and Langmuir models. Treated leaf powder was studied at various pHs (2,4,6 and 8) with a series of aqueous solutions containing 2,3,5,6,8,10,12, and 15 mg F/l. At the highest F ion concentration (15 mg/I), the F- ion level in the effluent gradually decreased to 0 mg/l within 180 min at 29±0.5°C when the dose of adsorbent is 10 g/l in a sample of 50 ml volume. With lower F- ion concentrations (2 mg/l) in the feed solutions the fluoride ion concentration steadily decreased reaching 0 mg/l after 150 min. Langmuir isotherm fits well for defluoridation of water using leaf powder.
