The distribution of the residual stress in the weld joint of HQ130 grade high strength steel was investigated by means of finite element method (FEM) using ANSYS software. Welding was carried out using gas shielded arc welding with a heat input of 16 kJ/cm. The FEM analysis on the weld joint reveal that there is a stress gradient around the fusion zone of weld joint. The instantaneous residual stress on the weld surface goes up to 800 ~ 1000 MPa and it is 500 ~ 600 MPa, below the weld. The stress gradient near the fusion zone is higher than any other location in the surrounding area. This is attributed as one of the significant reasons for the development of cold cracks at the fusion zone in the high strength steel. In order to avoid such welding cracks, the thermal stress in the weld joint has to be minimized by controlling the weld heat input.

The vibrational overtone spectra of liquid phase 2-furaldehyde have been observed in the near infrared region and analysed using local mode model. The analysis shows that the nature of interaction between the substituent-CHO group and the ring is influenced by the hetero atom present in the ring part of the molecule. Consequently the electron withdrawing ability of aldehydic group is considerably reduced in furfural compared to its six membered counterpart benzaldehyde.

Elastic properties, ¹¹B MAS-NMR and IR spectroscopic studies have been employed to study the structure of Na₂O-ZnO-B₂O₃ glasses. Sound velocities and elastic moduli such as longitudinal, Young's, bulk and shear modulus have been measured at a frequency of 10 MHz as a function of ZnO concentration. Both sound velocities and elastic moduli increase with increasing ZnO concentration. Poisson's ratio and Debye temperature were also found to increase with ZnO concentration. ¹¹B MAS-NMR and IR spectra show characteristic features of borate network and compositional dependence trends as a function of Na₂O/ZnO concentration. The results are discussed in view of borate network and dual structural role of Zn²⁺ ion into the network. The results indicate that the Zn²⁺ ions are likely to occupy network forming positions in this glass system.

Recent theoretical approaches to the understanding of superionic conductivity in polycrystalline, glassy and polymeric materials are briefly reviewed. Phase transitions to the superionic conducting state in the AgI family are apparently triggered by cluster formation and strong mobile ion interaction within the clusters. Anomalous conductivity and related physical properties are explained in the cluster induced distortion model. Ionic composites such as AgX : Al₂O₃ (X = Cl, Br and I) involve conducting and non-conducting phases and the all-important interface between the two whose space charge enhances the conductivity and also trigger phase transitions to exotic polymorphic phases, for which the mechanisms are yet to be explored. Ion hopping dynamics controls the conductivity of superionic glasses. Mode coupling and jump relaxation theories account for the non-Debye relaxation observed in a.c. conductivity of superionic glasses. Mode coupling and jump relaxation theories account for the non-Debye relaxation observed in a.c. conductivity of these glasses. The theory of conductivity in polymer electrolytes still in its infancy-involves their complex structure and glass transition behaviour. Preparative and thermal history, composition and crystallinity control ionic conductivity. New approaches to the synthesis of optimal polymer electrolytes such as rubbery electrolytes, crystalline polymers and nanocomposites must be considered.

The synthesis of high temperature superconducting films of Y : 247 (T_c ~ 73 K) have been successfully achieved. The difficulty in synthesis owing to narrow range of stability of Y: 247 has been taken care of through several quenching modes, e.g. quenching of the films synthesized at ~ 850°C, in air or in liquid nitrogen. The energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the as processed film, Y₂Ba₄Cu₇O_14+x, exhibit nearly correct cationic stoichiometry of 2 : 4 : 7; also narrow regions (<60>50Å) of minority Y : 124 phase and stacking faults capable of working as flux pinning sites have been invariably found to be present. In addition of Y : 247, Ag admixed films have also been investigated. The T_c here is ~ 70-75 K which is similar to that of the film without silver. Representative estimates of transport critical current density (J_c for Y : 247 films is ~ 10³², and with silver corresponding to Y₂Ba₄Cu₇O_14+x (Ag_0-1) is found to be ~ 10⁴ A/Cm².

Using the modified value of polarizability based on the present calculations, it is found that the critical nuclei have much less radii in the presence of electric field. The nucleation rate in presence of electric field is greater than in its absence. The enhancement factor to the nucleation rate in presence of electric field is several orders higher than in the absence of an electric field. The polarizability of water vapour molecules in presence of external electric field plays an important role in the nucleation rate of watervapour condensation and ice glaciation. The incease in polarizability results in the increase in Gib's free energy, and hence the increase in nucleation rate, but at the same time there is a decrease in relaxation time. The polarizability enhances the nucleation rate and equilibrium concentration, e.g. for a given relaxation time 5x10^-15 s, the radius of critical nucleus is found to increase from 27.72x10^-9 cm to 81.07x10^-9 cm when electric field increases from 10 esu to 50 esu, whereas Gibb's free energy increase from 3.22x10^-15 erg for same increase in electric field.

The equivalence between critical temperature corresponding to unit nucleation rate per unit volume has been studied with external electric field applied to water vapour. It has been found that an external electric field of 1 e.s.u. with different supersaturation ratio is equivalent to several orders of temperature. The high electric field is found to correspond with lower temperatures for critical nucleation. The theory of droplet growth in presence of external electric field has been applied to water vapour condensation. The radius of critical nucleus is found to depend on electric field and relaxation time. Further, in presence of electric field, Gibb's free energy of formation of water molecule changes for a critical nucleus and is found to be much less than that in absence of the electric field, but equilibrium concentration of nuclei is very much larger.

This technique overcomes the weakness of previous works and allows a study of effect arising from the positoning of desecrete defects and their correlations. The average gain boundary charge density strongly influcences transport, and a field dependent threshold-effect is predicted.

Kinetic Alfven waves in the presence of an inhomogeneous electric field perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field in inhomogeneous dusty magnetoplasma are investigated. Expression for the field-aligned current, perpendicular current (to the Bo), dispersion relation, particle energy and growth-rate are derived and the effect of inhomogeneous electric field is discussed. The particle aspect approach is adopted to investigate the trajectories of charged particles in the electromagnetic field of kinetic Alfven wave in dusty magnetosphere. It is found that electric field enhances the frequency of kinetic Alfven wave for both the waves travelling towards the ionosphere and reflected by the ionosphere. Enhancement of growth rate at the particular wave number is predicted. Reduction in wave frequency and enhancement of growth rate by electric field inhomogeneity is observed. Minor effect of inhomogeneous electric field on perpendicular and parallel current are noted. The applicability of the finding is discussed for auroral acceleration phenomena.

In the present work, offers a quantitative analysis of this problem on the basis of facts and principles related to the perception of colours of physical origin analysed by Raman during the later part of his life.

Poly(ethylene oxide)-LiX complexes and poly[bis(methoxy ethoxy ethoxide) phosphazene]-LiX complexes of polymer thin films were prepared. Conductivity measurements were carried out and the values were found to lie between 10^-8 and 1.7 x 10^-5 (S/cm). MEEP : LiX salts showed higher conductivity than PEO-LiX salts despite lower dimensional stability. For enhancing stability and conductivity, MEEP-PEO : (LiX)_n systems were prepared and conductivity measurements carried out. Further the MEEP/PEO : (LiX)_n was doped with Al₂O₃ and TiO₂ nanocomposite ceramic fillers and the conductivity was studied. The conductivity vs temperature plots showed the enhancement of conductivity with TiO₂ added nanocomposite ceramic fillers. The enhanced conductivity is explained on the basis of the effect of local structural modification-promoting localized amorphous region-for enhancement of the Li⁺ ion transport.

Spetra obtained with the different laser wavelengths are compared and advantages and disadvantages by use of different excitation wavelengths are discusses. Collectivity of vibrational modes in proteins will be briefly mentioned and examples on resonance energy transfer (RET) and coalescence of bands in mixtures of isotopomers (CBMI) will be given. The importance of water and water structure in protein/water mixtures and in human sxin will be discussed. In this context the use of low-frequency Raman spectroscopy at Raman shifts below 200 cm¹ is very useful. The importane of fast dynamics in proteins and protein water interactions is discussed in terms of a new way to think of signal transduction in biological systems.

The optoelectronic and structural properties of these films have been studied. The optical gap of the nc-Si films varies from 1.8 eV to 20.9 eV depending upon the deposition conditions. The size of the crystallities varies from 7 nm to 10 nm as observed from transmission electron micrographs. Degradations of these films under exposure of light have been investigated. solar cells have been fabricated with these nc-Si as absorber layers and the efficiencies of 8.7% have been achieved.

The title compound crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2₁/c with unit cell dimensions, a = 7.706(1), b = 11.745(2), c = 12.721(2) Angstrom, β = 92.31(1)°, Z = 4 and its structure has been refined up to the reliability index of 3.8%. The average torsion angle about the inter-ring C-C bond is 37.5°. The O1 and O1' atoms of the methoxy group are deviated by 0.046(1) Angstrom and 0.234(1) Angstrom from the mean planes of respective rings. The crystal cohesion is pronounced due to three-intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonds.

A number of metal complexes of nickel (II), cobalt (II), iron (II) and managanese (II) with the ligand α-benzilmonoxime isonicotinoyl hydrazone have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of magnetic moment data, electronic as well as IR spectral studies and conductivity data. The molar conductivities show that the complexes are electrolytic in nature. The IR spectra suggest that the ligands are behaving in a tetradentate manner in all cases. The electronic spectra togather with magnetic moment data indicate octahedral geometry of ligand donor atoms around central metal ions. In all these complexes the oxime group acts as a bridging group utilising both of its donor atoms namely nitrogen and oxygen to give dimeric structure to the complexes.

Complexes of Co(II), and Ni(II) and Cu(II) with Schiff base formed by condensation of semicarbazide hydrochloride and thiosemicarbazide hydrochloride with 3-ethyl-4-methyl isoquinolone have been synthesized and their physico-chemical properties have been investigated by elemental analysis, magnetic moment, molar conductance, electronic and infrared spectral data. The ligand was found to be tridentate chelating agent for the metal ions. The metal complex have the general formula [M(HL¹,²)₂].

The complexes are found to be non electrolytic in nature.

Some selective cold plasma processing modify specific surface properties of textile polymeric materials such as their dyeability, wettability and hydrorepellence. To correlate the sample surface changes with the acquired surface properties allows one to obtain information on the chemical and physical processing involved in plasma treatment. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to investigate the morphological and topographical surface modifications induced by RF cold plasma processing of poly(ethyleneterephthalate) (PET) fabrics. Rms surface roughness and surface area of the samples are measured before and after the treatments.The morphology changes have been analysed as a function of the treatment time and air gas pressure. Measurements have been performed also using plasmas produced by different gases such as He, Ar, SF₆ and CF₄. The PET shows different behaviour with different gas plasmas. In the case of air, He and Ar gases the sample surface modifications seem to be mainly due to etching effects, while the fluorine atoms grafting probably is responsible for surface rearrangement process using SF₆ and CF₄ gases. As a consequence, different surface properties are produced in the plasma treated samples.

Taking the coupled Schrodinger-KdV equation and DS equations as examples, adundant periodic wave solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions are obtained. During last three decades, successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, has emerged as one of the solution methods to deposit a variety of compound materials in thin film form. The SILAR method is inexpensive, simple and convenient for large area deposition. A variety of substrates such as insulators, semiconductors, metals and temperature sensitive substrates (like polyester) can be used since the deposition is carried out at or near to room temperature. As a low temperature process, it also avoids oxidation and corrosion of the substrate. The prime requisite for obtaining good quality thin film is the optimization of preparative provison viz. concentration of the precursors, nature of complexing agent, pH of the precursor solutions and adsorption, reaction and rinsing time durations etc. Successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method of metal chalcogenide thin films. An extensive survey of thin film materials prepared during past years is made to demonstrate the versatility have been described in detail of SILAR method. Their preparative parameters and structural, optical, electrical properties etc are described. Theoretical background necessary for the SILAR method is also discussed.

The change in volume of the unit volume called the dilatation is approximately the sum of the diagonal components of the strain tensor ε_ij, and proportional for isotropic cases with the sum of the diagonal components of the stress lensor σ_ij. Dilatation fields have been calculated in the two isotropic media which have hexagonal disolation networks in their interfaces and free surface effect on the dilatation have been investigated. Although dilatations in the media which tend to infinity called substrates are not influenced by the free surfaces symbolised with H from the interfaces. Depending on the location of the free surfaces there increase in volume in the epilayer.

Encryption is carried out using double random phase encoding in the fractional Fourier domain. The decrypted phase image is converted into an amplitude image by using a phase contrast technique. A computer simulation in support of the proposed method is presented.

Nanocrystalline Ni3N is prepared by simultaneous thermal decomposition and nitridation of {Ni(ND3)6}(NO3)2 complex crystal in NH3 gas atmosphere. the electrical resistivity of Ni3N shows the metallic nature having temparature co-efficient ratio of 3.3735 x 10^-3>K^-1.Also, it shows the ferromagnetic behaviour having Curie temperature at 361°C. if Ni3N is heated in NH3 gas atmosphere, it decomposes at 410°C, and complete decomposition to Ni-metal is happen above 600°C due to the reducing property of NH(V>3. The TG and DTA studies of Ni3N in O2 atmosphere shows that Ni3N is stable up to 180°C, and then it decomposes to give Ni3N0.9513 oxides to 3 NiNxOy at 310-630°C. Complete oxidation NiO is happen above 630°C. On the other hand, there is a chance to form both Ni²⁺ as NiO and Ni^{+(2-δ) as NiOx} at high temperatures. However, in the absolute absence of O2 gas, i.e. inert atmosphere, it decomposes to give Ni-metal only 600-700°C.

Investigates the ground-state structures of even-even Hf, W and Os isotopes within the framework of a deformed non-relativistic Hartree-Fock and a relativistic mean field formalism. A majority of the nuclei are predicted to be prolate in shape in the relativistic calculations. On the other hand, contrary to the relativistic results, a shape change has been predicted in a cyclic order in the non-relativistic calculations. However, in both the cases, the magnitude of the quadrupole deformation parameter agree well with the experimental data. Also evaluates the hexadecapole deformation parameter for Hf, W and Os isotopes and irrespective of the shape from positive to negative and vice versa in both the relativistic and non-relativistic formalisms.

Unusually, a manifested photoemission in two bandgroups occurs at 620 and 666 nm in Eu2O3 nanocrystals in an amorphous host of Al(V>2O3. The two bandgroups refer to ⁵D0 → ⁷F2 and ⁵D0 → ⁷F3 electronic transitions, respectively, in EU³⁺(4f⁶ cations. the 666 nm band has a maximum of 58%value of integrated intensity Ii in the two bands. the value of Ii varies in a nonlinear function with Eu³⁺ carrier concentration, with a maximum value in the sample of 1.0 wt % Eu³⁺. This is as large value as 20 times the values in other Eu³⁺ : Al2O3 samples of 0.2 to 1.5 wt58% Eu³⁺ content while varies in a complex manner in the other bandgroup. it seems that different processes of electron-phonon coupling or Eu³⁺ - Eu³⁺ interactions operate in the two ⁵D(V>o → ⁷F2.3 transitions so that to account for their different nonlinear response with the Eu³⁺ carrier concentration and the micorstructure.

The optical emission and excitation spectral studies in KBr:Eu²⁺, Mn²⁺ single crystals at different sample conditons have been analysed to identify the various aggregates and precipitates of both impurities and possible energy transfer from one impurity to another. The emission obtained at 525 nm in the grown samples both at RT and LNT is proposed to be due to radiative energy transfer Eu²⁺ to Mn²⁺ ions, the latter being in Suzuki phase. The RT emission spectra of the samples annealed for a long time at 200°C and LNT emission spectra of as grown samples identify the growth of different aggregates of Eu²⁺ and Mn²⁺ions at the expense of (I-V) dipoles of the two impurities.

The four dimensional nearest neighbor Ising model is simulated on the Creutz cellular automation by using the finite-size lattices with the linear dimensions L = 4,6,8,10,12,14,16. The approximate values for the critical temperature of the infinite lattice T_c = 6.678(18), T_c = 6.689(44), T_c = 6.6498(12) were obtained from the intersection points of specific heat curves, Binder parameter curves, the maxima of the specific heat, respectively. The obtained results are in good agreement with those of the other studies.

A quadratic constraint scheme is applied to determine the complete energy surface for a side range of the quadrupole deformation. The NL3, NL-RA1 and TM1 parameter sets are used. The phenomenon of (multiple) shape coextistence is studied and the calculated ground and excited state binding energies, quadrupole deformation parameters and root mean square (rms) charge radii are compared with the available experimental data and other theoretical predictions.

PbZrxTi1-xO3, x~0.7, of nanopartilces is synthesized by reconstructive thermal decomposition and crystallization from an amorphous polymer percusor with poly vinyl alcohol and sucrose by heating at 400 to 700° in air. Unusually, a tetragonal crystal structure retains in PbZr0.7Ti0.3O3 in nanoparticles at so extended concentration in Zr⁴⁺ cations above the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) at x ~0.52. Otherwise, the tetragonal crystal structure converts to the rhombohedral structure as early as the value of x exceeds this critical value. the structure is analyzed with X-ray diffraction of the PbZrxTi1-xO3 compound processed at different temparatures in this range. Average crystallite size is analyzed to be 16mm by the broadening in the diffraction peaks in the sample processed at 400°C in 2 h. It hardly grows as big as 22 nm on raising the temperature as high as 700°C.

Vibrational overtone absorption spectra of liquid phase allyl chloride and allyl alcohol in the near infrared region are reported. The analysis shows that in allyl alcohol, one of the lone pair electrons of the oxygen atom trans to CH bond of the CH₂Cl withdraws electrons from the vinyl group and increases the mechanical frequency of vinyl CH.
