Pramana J Phys 2010, 74(6), 945-59.
The plasma generated by 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser irradiation of aluminum alloy in air at atmospheric pressure was studied spectroscopically. The electron density inferred by measuring the Stark-broadened line profile of Si (I) 288.16 nm decreases with increasing distance from the target surface. The electron temperature was determined using the Boltzmann plot method with nine strong neutral aluminum lines. Due to the thermal conduction towards the solid target and radiative cooling of the plasma as well as conversion of thermal energy into kinetic energy, the electron temperature decreases both at the plasma edge and close to the target surface. Electron density and electron temperature were also studied as functions of laser power density. At the same time, the validity of the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium and the effect of self-absorption were discussed in light of the results obtained.

The spatial invariant line element, which is regarded as the local distance in Einstein's theory of measurement, is actually a space contraction measured from a local Minkowski space, resting but at free fall. It is shown that Einstein's theory of measurement is actually based on only invalid applications of special relativity; and is not an integral part of general relativity. In addition to theoretical difficulties pointed out by Whitehead, Einstein's approach seems to necessitate his covariance principle that creates further problems. It is shown that a physical Riemannian space-time must have a frame of reference with the Euclidean-like structure that is compatible with physical measurements. Thus, the invariant line element provides the space contractions while the Euclidean-like structure provides the measurement of local distance. Furthermore, the notion of gauge invariant measurable quantity is proven an illusion in mathematics only. For instance, in the light deflection, the impact parameter and the shortest distance from the sun cannot be gauge invariant when measurements are involved.

Consideres their unbounded metric as a weak wave from a distant source, but they were unaware that their "wave" violates the principle of causality. However, the claim of the Royal Society on the inconsistency between Einstein's "covariance principle" and Einstein's requirement for weak gravity is valid. Although his requirement is crucial for having agreements with observations, it may not be compatible with a Lorentz manifold. Thus, there was no general consensus. However, the principle of causality enables us to show that Einstein's requirement is valid on source-induced gravity. Moreover, there are counter examples for Einstein's covariance principle although it is needed for Einstein's theory of measurement, whose justifications are actually based on invalid applications of special relativity. Einstein's covariance principle is also inconsistent with his equivalence principle. It is pointed out that not only his theory of measurement is not used in his predictions, but also leads to disagreement with observations and theoretical inconsistency. The valid spatial measurement is based on the Euclidean-like structure; and this is what Einstein actually practiced in his calculations.

Calculation shows that different gauges lead to different formulas of the de Sitter precession. Therefore, gauge invariance for a given frame of reference is clearly invalid, and thus general relativity remains to be completed. In fact, the claim of diffeomorphic solutions being the same in physics, just as Einstein's "covariance principle," is due to an inadequate ability to distinguish the physics from mathematics. Moreover, since the Stanford experiment, Gravity Probe-B, measures only the accumulated effects of the de Sitter precession, it would be very difficult for gravity Probe-B to distinguish these three formulas because of the time averaging effect. Although the radial gauge has an arbitrary integral constant in the related formula, Gravity Probe-B is unable to show whether such a gauge or Whitehead's theory is invalid. However, as Zhou conjectured, an experiment on local light speeds would further support the Maxwell-Newton Approximation, in addition to tell whether Whitehead's theory is valid although his experiment is not sensitive to the globe's rotation. Concurrently, it is pointed out that the so-called physically measurable gauge invariant values are merely mathematical illusions.

Study the interaction of magnons in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein conden-sates in an optical lattice. By means of Holstein-Primakoff and Fourier transformations the energy spectra of the ground and the excited states is obtained analytically. Our results show that the collision of magnons is elastic which is expressed by the conservation of wave numbers in the process of collision. At last, we found that the interaction of magnons is attractive which tends to self-localization to form spin waves, i.e., a cluster of a macroscopic number of coherent magnons. Because of the attraction, the instability of spin wave brings about the existence of solitary wave.

The fundamental optimal relation between heating load and coefficient of performance (COP) of a generalized irreversible Carnot heat pump is derived based on a new generalized heat transfer law, which includes the generalized convective heat transfer law and generalized radiative heat transfer law, q α (ΔTn)m. The generalized irreversible Carnot heat pump model incorporates several internal and external irreversibilities, such as heat resistance, bypass heat leakage, friction, turbulence and other undesirable irre-versibility factors. The added irreversibilities besides heat resistance are characterized by a constant parameter and a constant coefficient. The effects of heat transfer laws and various loss terms are analysed. The heating load vs. COP characteristic of a generalized irreversible Carnot heat pump is a parabolic-like curve, which is consistent with the experimental result of thermoelectric heat pump. The obtained results include those obtained in many literatures and indicated that the analysis results of the generalized irreversible Carnot heat pump were more suitable for engineering practice than those of the endoreversible Carnot heat pump.

Pramana J Phys 2010, 74(5), 827-32.
Compared to the conventional melt growth (MG) method, the top seeded infiltration and growth (TSIG) process is an effective way for preparing bulk REBa2Cu3O7-x (RE-123) with finely dispersed RE2BaCuO5 (RE-211) particles. However, it is more complicated and time-consuming, because three kinds of precursor powders, namely, RE-211, RE-123 and BaCuO2, have to be prepared for the conventional TSIG process. In this paper, a new liquid source (NLS) composed of RE-211 and Ba3Cu5O8, was proposed for simplifying the TSIG process, which is different from the regular liquid source (RLS) composed of RE-123 and Ba3Cu5O8. In this modified TSIG technique, we need to prepare only RE-211 and BaCuO2 powders. Single-grain GdBa2Cu3O7-x (GdBCO) bulk superconductors have been fabricated using the RLS and NLS separately. The morphology, microstructure and levitatiori force of the bulk GdBCO have also been investigated. The results indicate that the NLS can be used to simplify the process flow and improve the efficiency on the fabrication of single-grain GdBCO superconductors.

PT symmetry is spontaneously broken, however, for complex L values of the form L = - 1/2 + iλ. In this case the potential remains PT-symmetric, while the two independent solutions are transformed to each other by the PT operation and at the same time, the two series of discrete energy eigenvalues turn into each other's complex conjugate.

Studied the stability of the electrostatic ion cyclotron wave in a plasma consisting of isotropic hydrogen ions (H+) and temperature-anisotropic positively (O+) and negatively (O-) charged oxygen ions, with the electrons drifting parallel to the magnetic field. Analytical expressions have been derived for the frequency and growth/damping rate of ion cyclotron waves around the first harmonic of both hydrogen and oxygen ion gyrofrequencies. We find that the frequencies and growth/damping rates are dependent on the densities and temperatures of all species of ions. A detailed numerical study, for parameters relevant to comet Halley, shows that the growth rate is dependent on the magnitude of the frequency. The ion cyclotron waves are driven by the electron drift parallel to the magnetic field; the temperature anisotropy of the oxygen ions only slightly enhance the growth rates for small values of temperature anisotropies. A simple explanation, in terms of wave exponentiation times, is offered for the absence of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves in the multi-ion plasma of comet Halley.

Nanoparticles of Zinc Oxide have been synthesized by sol-gel method by decomposition of Zinc Sulphate through Sodium Hydroxide route. The particles were prepared by different methods (A) and (B) which differ in process of mixing, heat treatment and stirring time etc. The natures of particles i.e. crystallinity and size etc were assigned by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern. The images obtained by SEM show that the particles prepared by method (A) exist in cluster form where as images obtained from method (B) do not exist in that form but appear in the form of a sheet. The particles prepared by this process are named as ZnO-A and ZnO-B. The peaks obtained by XRD pattern clearly indicate that the particles are highly crystalline in nature but crystallinity of ZnO-A is less than ZnO-B. The sizes of particles have been calculated by Debye Scherrer formula from the values of FWHM of peaks. The sizes of ZnO-A and ZnO-B were found lOnm and 7.7nm respectively. Hence the process B is more effective for the preparation of ZnO nanoparticles.

We have successfully incorporated MMA monomer and eliminated the polymerization step to lower the dielectric constant of deposited thin film. The presence of peak of C=C bond in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and carbon peak in energy dispersive (EDAX) spectra confirms the incorporation of carbon in the film due to MMA. The concentration of MMA has great impact on the peak area and full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the Si-O-Si bond, which decreases the density by low atomic weight elements and consequently decreases the dielectric constant. The surface morphology analysed by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image shows excellent uniformity of the film. The refractive index of 1-31 was measured by ellipsometer for 0-5 ml MMA concentration film. These deposited thin films having low refractive index and dielectric constant are widely applicable for the optical interconnects and interlayer applications in integrated optical circuits and VLSI circuits.

The presence of four ghost interactions in these types of gauges and their connection with the BRST symmetry are stressed. Provides probabilistic interpretation of resonant states. We do this by showing that the integral of the modulus square of resonance wave functions (i.e., the conventional norm) over a properly expanding spatial domain is independent of time, and therefore leads to probability conservation. This is in contrast with the conventional employment of a bi-orthogonal basis that precludes probabilistic interpretation, since wave functions of resonant states diverge exponentially in space. On the other hand, resonant states decay exponentially in time, because momentum leaks out of the central scattering area. This momentum leakage is also the reason for the spatial exponential divergence of resonant state. It is by combining the opposite temporal and spatial behaviours of resonant states that we arrive at our probabilistic interpretation of these states. The physical need to normalize resonant wave functions over an expanding spatial domain arises because particles leak out of the region which contains the potential range and escape to infinity, and one has to include them in the total count of particles.

The real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant ε' and ε" of soil of Alwar contaminated with crude oil are determined at different low levels of contamination. ε' and ε" are measured by wave-guide cell method at a single microwave frequency 9.78 GHz and at constant temperature 33°C. In view of passive and active microwave remote sensing Microwave emissivity and radar backscattering coefficient of contaminated soil with crude oil is estimated by model calculations. It is observed that the horizontal component of emissivity (eh) decreases as percentage concentration of contamination of crude oil increases at all observation angles. The vertical component of emissivity (ev} decreases as percentage concentration of contamination for the observation angle up to 0° -60° then variation of (ev) at higher observation angle (θ

The YBCO material is synthesized under the controlled environment by the sol-gel method. Standard characterization techniques like FTIR, UV/VIS/NIR spectroscopy, XRD and TGA have been employed to understand the phase transition during the growth of the sample. YBCO shows some interesting results about the properties related to different phases of formation as two different crystalline phases are observed in the sol form before annealing. Various optical and crystalline properties during the phase transition are investigated and an attempt is made to study the dynamics of the phase transition.

Pramana J Phys 2010, 74(2), 325-30.
Electrical properties of SiO2 grown on the Si-face of the epitaxial 4H-SiC substrate by wet thermal oxidation technique have been experimentally investigated in metal oxide-silicon carbide (MOSiC) structure with varying oxide thicknesses employing Poole-Frenkel (P-F) conduction mechanism. The quality of SiO2 with increasing thickness in MOSiC structure has been analysed on the basis of variation in multiple oxide traps due to effective P-F conduction range. Validity of Poole-Frenkel conduction is established quantitatively employing electric field and the oxide thickness using forward I-V characteristics across MOSiC structures. From P-F conduction plot (In(J/E) vs. E1/2), it is revealed that Poole-Frenkel conduction retains its validation after a fixed electric field range. The experimental methodology adopted is useful for the characterization of oxide films grown on 4H-SiC substrate.

Pramana J Phys 2009, 73(5), 901-12.
Optics has already proved its strong potentiality for the conduction of parallel logic, arithmetic and algebraic operations. In the last few decades several all-optical data processors were proposed. To implement these processors different data encoding/decoding techniques have been reported. In this context, polarization encoding technique, intensity-based encoding technique, tristate and quaternary logic operation, multivalued logic operations, symbolic substitution techniques etc. may be mentioned. Very recently, frequency encoding/decoding technique has drawn interest from the scientific community. Frequency is the fundamental character of any signal; and it remains unaltered in reflection, refraction, absorption etc. during the propagation and transmission of the signal. This is the most important advantage of frequency encoding technique over the conventional encoding techniques. In this communication the authors propose a new scheme for implementing NOT, OR and NOR logic operations. For this purpose co-propagating beams having different frequencies in C-band (1535-1560 nm) have been used for generating cascaded sum and difference frequency, exploiting the nonlinear response character of periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide. The cross-gain modulation property of the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and the wavelength conversion property of the reflecting semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOA) are exploited here to implement the desired optical logic and arithmetic operations.

The shell model calculations have been performed using the standard universal sd-shell (USD) interaction and the canonical partition function constructed from the calculated eigensolutions. It is shown that the extracted average quadrupole moments show a transitional behaviour as a function of temperature and the infered transitional temperature is shown to vary with angular momentum. The quadrupole deformation of the individual eigenstate is also analysed.

Pramana J Phys 2010, 74(2), 307-24.
Reports an inter-comparison of some popular algorithms within the artificial neural network domain (viz., local search algorithms, global search algorithms, higher-order algorithms and the hybrid algorithms) by applying them to the standard benchmarking problems like the IRIS data, XOR/N-bit parity and two-spiral problems. Apart from giving a brief description of these algorithms, the results obtained for the above benchmark problems are presented in the paper. The results suggest that while Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the lowest RMS error for the N-bit parity and the two-spiral problems, higher-order neuron algorithm gives the best results for the IRIS data problem. The best results for the XOR problem are obtained with the neuro-fuzzy algorithm. The above algorithms were also applied for solving several regression problems such as cos(x) and a few special functions like the gamma function, the complimentary error function and the upper tail cumulative x2-distribution function. The results of these regression problems indicate that, among all the ANN algorithms used in the present study, Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm yields the best results. Keeping in view the highly nonlinear behaviour and the wide dynamic range of these functions, it is suggested that these functions can also be considered as standard benchmark problems for function approximation using artificial neural networks.

The channelling and scattering yields of I MeV α-particles in the (100), (110} and (111} directions of silicon implanted with bismuth and ytterbium have been simulated using JV-body model. The close encounter yield from dopant atoms in silicon is determined from the flux density, using the Bontemps and Fontenille method. All previous works reported in literature so far have been done with computer programmes using a statistical analytical expression or by a binary collision model or a continuum model. These results at the best gave only the transverse displacement of the lattice site from the concerned channelling direction. Here we applied the superior N-body model to study the yield from bismuth in silicon. The finding that bismuth atom occupies a position close to the silicon substitutional site is new. The transverse displacement of the suggested lattice site from the channelling direction is consistent with the experimental results. The above model is also applied to determine the location of ytterbium in silicon. The present values show good agreement with the experimental results.

We also incorporate a relaxation mechanism phenomenologically by including a stochastic friction force to study S(q, wJ). A significant temperature dependence of the density fluctuation spectra is found. Investigated the effects of solvent used during synthesis on structural and optical properties of CdS quantum dots. Different methods of synthesis for the production of CdS quantum dots are presented. These are: (a) wet chemical co-precipitation in non-aqueous medium (i.e. methanol); (b) wet chemical co-precipitation in aqueous medium (deionized water) and (c) solid state reaction. It is demonstrated that the use of methanol as solvent leads to a strong enhancement of PL intensity of CdS quantum dots for use in optoelectronic devices. These products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The change in band-gap with size-quantization was investigated by UV-V1S absorption spectroscopy. CdS nanocrystals prepared in non-aqueous medium have narrow size distribution than those prepared in aqueous medium and solid state reaction. Phase transformation of CdS nanocrystals from a cubic to hexagonal structure was observed in methanol solution. The formation of CdS/Cd(OH)2 nanostructure was also confirmed using X-ray diffraction pattern. This suggests that the strong enhancement of the PL intensity may have originated from the remarkable reduction of non-radiative recombination process, due to surface defects of quantum dots. The red shift of the Raman peaks compared to that for bulk CdS may be attributed to optical phonon confinement.
