The Hartree-Bogoliubov (HB) framework of calculations has been applied for calculating various nuclear structure quantities for 152-160Gd mass chain. In this framework, the Yrast spctra with Jπ = 16+, B (E2) transition probabilities and occupation numbers for various shell model orbits have been obtained. The calculated results indicate that the observed onset of deformation in going from 154-160Gd arises due to enhanced occupation of (h11/2)π orbit, increased polarization of (d5/2)π orbit and increase in the occupation of down slopping `k' components of (i13/2)π and (h9/2)π orbits.

The contribution of the electron-electron Umklapp scattering processes in the electrical resistivity of aluminium at low temperatures has been evaluated using a simplified spherical Fermi surface model with isotropic transition probability. Reviewed the main contributions of Einstein to the quantum theory. To put them in perspective, first given an account of physics as it was before him. It is followed by a brief account of the problem of black body radiation which provided the context for Planck to introduce the idea of quantum. Einstein's revolutionary paper of 1905 on light-quantum hypothesis is then described as well as an application of this idea to the photoelectric effect. Next taken up a discussion of Einstein's other contributions to old quantum theory. These include (i) theory of specific heat of solids, which was the first application of quantum theory to matter, (ii) discovery of wave-particle duality for light and (iii) Einstein's A and B coefficients relating to the probabilities of emission and absorption of light by atomic systems and his discovery of radiation stimulated emission of light which provides the basis for laser action. Described Einstein's contribution to quantum statistics, viz. Bose-Einstein statistics and his prediction of Bose-Einstein condensation of a boson gas. Einstein played a privotal role in the discovery of quantum mechanics and this is briefly mentioned. After 1925 Einstein contributed mainly to the foundations of quantum mechanics. Author choose to discuss here (i) his ensemble and (ii) the discovery of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlations and the EPR theorem on the conflict between Einstein-locality and the completeness of the formalism of quantum mechanicsum mechanics.

Einstein addressed the twin paradox in special relativity in a relatively unknown, unusual and rarely cited paper written in 1918, in the form of a dialogue between a critic and a relativist. Contrary to most textbook versions of the resolution, Einstein admitted that the special relativistic time dilation was symmetric for the twins, and he had to invoke, asymmetrically, the general relativistic gravitational time dilation during the brief periods of acceleration to justify the asymmetrical aging. Notably, Einstein did not use any argument related to simultaneity or Doppler shift in his analysis. Discuss Einstein's resolution and several conceptual issues that arise. It is concluded that Einstein's resolution using gravitational time dilation suffers from logical and physical flaws, and gives incorrect answers in a general setting. The counter examples imply the need to reconsider many issues related to the comparison of transported clocks. The failure of the accepted views and resolutions is traced to the fact that the special relativity principle formulated originally for physics in empty space is not valid in the matter-filled universe.

The current generation of interferometric and resonant mass detectors are only the beginning of a new era during which the gravitational window could be observed by deploying pulsar and microwave background radiation.

Epitaxial growth of SiGe/Si films in the Stranski-Krastanov mode can be exploited for the self-assembled growth of three-dimensional islands. Synthesis of Si and Ge nanocrystals embedded in a high bandgap insulator matrix could be utilized to achieve nanometer range structures without sophisticated nanolithography techniques. Extrapolations of laboratory tested physics are called for to understand all information within the framework of a standard model. The activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K from Palar river sediments, Tamil Nadu, India, have been determined by Gamma ray spectrometer with an HPGe detector. The mean values of the measured activities of 238U, 232Th and 40K are 9.81±0.3, 36.49±2.4 and 742.46±26.5 Bqkg-1 for the sediments of Palar river respectively. The absorbed dose rate, annual effective equivalent dose, radium equivalent concentration, external (Hex) and internal (Hin) hazardous indices were calculated from criteria formula and compared with the international recommended limits. The radioactive heat production rate was also calculated. The observed dose rate measurements from ERDM (Environmental Radiation Dosi Meter) at 1 m above the ground level at each site was measured and correlated with calculated absorbed dose rate. The distribution of quartz, feldspar and its total and kaolinite and weight of the magnetic minerals were correlated with radioactivity results. The radioactive measurements were taken for non magnetic fractions (residue of magnetic fractions) for all the site samples. The results indicate that the weight of the magnetic minerals is an index to select the sediments of low or high radiological risk. The activity concentrations and the values obtained from the criteria formula of Palar river sediments is slightly higher than the international recommended limit.

In laboratories, conventionally dual slope ADC 7109 is used for data acquisition in standard configuration (sampling rate 7.5 samples per second by using crystal of 3.579MHz). In previous paper use of data acquisition system with standard configuration to perform simple pendulum experiment was reported. While performing the experiment limitations caused by sampling rate lead inaccuracy in measurement of period, peak amplitudes as well as smoothness of observed waveform. To overcome this limitation data acquisition at higher sampling rate is required. in the present work modification are made in oscillator circuit of IC 7109, using overdriving technique, analogous to IBM PC Clone motherboard, to increase sampling speed. The data acquisition unit is interfaced with PC via standard parallel port. The developed interface module is then used for the simple pendulum experiment and these results are compared with previous results.

Since the time Cannizzaro expounded a system of atomic weight determination in the Karlsruhe Congress in 1860 and firmly established Avogadro hypothesis, there have been dozens of experimental methods for determining the Avogadro number. Many of these methods seek to determine a fundamental physical constant such as charge of an electron or the Boltzmann constant whose value for one mole of particles is precisely known. Ingenious methods that have been devised for the measurement of these fundamental constants has been discussed.

A novel method to determine the wavelength of laser light is presented. This method uses fringes of equal thickness, similar, yet different from Newton's rings. The fringes are produced using just a plano-convex lens. An expression for the wavelength is derived, relating it to the fringe radii, the radius of curvature and the refractive index of the lens. A comparison of the fringes obtained using the two methods has been presented. Coherence requirements and localization of fringes is discussed.

Atmospheric distortion limits the quality of images obtained with ground-based telescopes. Similarly, laser beam propagation through turbulent atmosphere results in discontinuity in satellite optical links. Adaptive Optic techniques provide compensation for the aberrations introduced due to the random refractive index fluctuations of the atmosphere. Presents the practical details of the successful design and development of a lowcost Shack-Hartmann wavefront analyzer, as well as a closed loop Adaptive Optics system which compensates the global tilt and the local phase fluctuations of a wavefront. The Shack-hartmann sensor measures the wavefront profile in real time and generates correction signals. Global tilt measurements to accuracy of 19 μ radians and phase profiles up to λ/50 have been acheived. Dynamic corrections have been made with tip-tilt mirror and a deformable mirror. The Opto-mechanical system, software design, and implementation are described. Experimental results of wave front measurements and correction of aberrations are presented.

It is shown that the magnetic storms cause significant decrease of the electrojet current during the daytime hours at both the Indians as well as the American longitudes. In the American sectors the increase of Aurora index AE seems to be large during the decrease of the electrojet current but in the Indian sectors no such effect isseen. It is suggested that an anti-Sq electric field is imposed at all longitudes during the magnetic storm period. This causes a significantly larger decrease ofΔH at equatoria electrojet station than at off-equatorial low latitude station due to large conductivities in the equatorial ionosphere. At night hours the strom effects are same at equatorial and low latitudes due the absence of E region ionizations and hence of the enhanced conductivities over the equator.

Contrary to what we learn in textbooks on the Special Theory of Relativity, Michelson-Morley experiment had no direct influence of Einstein's discovery although he undoubtedly knew about it. At the age of only 16, Einstein imagined himself standing in front of a plane mirror while he himself together with the mirror was being carried forward with the velocity of light. He asked himself the question whethr he would be able to see his image in the mirror in such a situation. In trying to solve this problem he thought over the whole foundation of physics with no assistance from any physicist. He, however, profited from some discussions with a few of his colleagues (the main person being Besso) who were unknown to the world of physics. Tried to reconstruct the arguments that perhaps led Einstein to his goal. In this effort, we are guided by some of his utterances and interviews given to different people in his later life.

One of the promising options is to make more extensive use of renewable source of energy derived from the earth, the geothermal (magma) power. Magma power is the potential generation of electricity from shallow magma bodies in the crust of earth. The paper is a study on a mathematical model of geothermal power station by taking the basic Fourier conducting equations and thereby looks into the technological feasibility of extracting geothermal energy. By means of a computer model a method of solution for a fixed value of electric power ouput from geothermal energy has been developed. Taking different variables such as temperature, thickness, density, specific heat and thermal conductivity of rock materials, variation of accuracy of the model is studied and presented.

An attempt has been made primarily concerned with the diffraction effects of quantum theory of liquids. The hard sphere system is treated as a reference in framing the theory of liquid. Authors were concerned with the evaluation of the radial distribution function of the hard sphere fluid in the semiclasical limit. When quantum effects are small, then the propeties of fluid are analysed in power of Planck's constant h. Some methods have been adopted to investigate the effects of quantum mechanics of the structural and thermodynamic properties of a dense hard sphere at higher temperature. It is found that the contribution of the higher order corrections increases with density. Other theoretical approach has been also taken to investigate the properties of simple fluids through an integral equation. Critically discusses the integral equation perturbation theory and the effective pair potential for the free energy and correlation function.

Natural convection in a rectangular cavity with a saturated porous layer on one of its vertical walls is studied numeriacally. The governing equations using the Boussinesq approximation for the tratment of buoyancy term in the momentum equation and the Darcy model are expressed using the vorticity-stream function approach. These equations are discretized with implicit finite-difference method. Thomas algorithm and Gauss-Seidel method are used to solve the resultant algebraic system equations. Results are presented in terms of streamlines, isotherms and isoconcentrations. The increase of the porous wall permeability leads to a more intensive buoyancy-driven flow through the porous wall and consequently an increase of heat and mass transfer occurs in the enclosure. Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are expressed as functions of dimensionless parameters as Darcy number, modified Grashof number and the geometric aspect ratio of the enclosure.

Studies the nonlinear dynamics of a warped or twisted accretion disc, in which the viscosity coefficients are assumed to be locally proportional to the rotational velocity (β-prescription). Using asymptotic methods for thin discs, dynamical equations of the disc are obtained in warped spherical polar coordinates. These equations are solved by the method of the separation of the variables. This analysis constitutes an analogous study of the nonlinear theory of an alpha model warped disc which has been studied by Ogilvie (1999). Compard results with Ogilvie's analysis. The dynamical behaviours of these models have also been discussed. The results shows that different viscosity prescriptions and magnitudes (α and β affect the dynamics of a warped accretion disc. Therefore it can be importantin determining the viscosity law even for a warped disc.
