Essentially is a study and confirmation of charge transfer between the 3,3',5,5'-tetrabenzidine and 2-octadecyl 7,7,8,8, tetracyanoquinodimethane (TMB- C18TCNQ) by Raman spectroscopy scattering technique on a cast film of the sample. Organic charge transfer complexes composed of planar aromatic donor (D) and acceptor (A) molecules have been recognised to be of crucial importance due to their unique physical properties which arise from their low dimensionality. A cast film of 2-octadecyl-7,7.6,8 tetracyanoquinodimethane (C18TCNQ) was prepared on a gold coated glass slide and its Raman spectrum was studied using excitation lines from a He-Cd laser (441.6 nm). The cast film of C18TCNQ was then doped with 3,3',5,5' -tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) which resulted in the charge of colour from yellow to purple-red. The shift in the position of the bands in the Raman spectrum of this doped sample revealed the formation of a charge transfer complex. The Raman bands of the pure C18TCNQ sample at 1443 cm-1 and 2219 cm-1 were shifted to 1423 cm-1 and 2203 cm-1 respectively, after doping with TMB. From a detailed study of these bands, the degree of charge transfer (r) from C18TCNQ to TMB has been estimated.

Behaviour of Wigner phase delay time for tunneling in the reflection mode has been studied. System consists of a circular loop connected to a single wire of semi-infinite length in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux. Calculates the analytical expression for the saturated delay time. This saturated delay time is independent of Aharonov-Bohm flux and the width of the opaque barrier thereby generalising the Hartman effect. This effect implies superluminal group velocities as a consequence. Also briefly discusses the concept called space collapse or space destroyer.

Lorentz sphere is a hypothetical spherical volume element, inevitably, invoked to take into account the demagnetising effects (in the case of diamagnetic materials) while describing the contributions to the induced fields at a point inside magnetised materials. Till now, there have not been any compelling necessity to know the actual magnetudes of the contributions from within this sphere and, how exactly to demarcate this spherical part of the material by a concrete boundary, within the bulk material of the specimen. Not much emphasis could be given in the discussions on the significance of the Lorentaz sphere, except that, it be defined as a semi-micro volume element. This situation seems to have been brought to prominence by the discussion requiring interpretation of the experimental results by the technique of Solid Stage High Resolution Protein Magnetic Resonance (HR PMR) in single crystals of organic molecules. This perspective has been discussed.

Describes the results of a proficiency testing program carried out through interlaboratory comparison of seven laboratories, accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration of Laboratories (NABL), India, having best measurement capabilities better than 0.25 % and coarse than 0.05% of full-scale pressure, using a Digital Pressure Calibrator as an artifact in the pressure range 70 bar to 700 bar (7 MPa to 70 MPa). The primary objective for organizing this proficiency testing (PT) is to assess the laboratory's technical competence to perform measurements and also fulfilling the requirement oflLAC/APLAC in regards to the compatibility of results submitted by these laboratories. National Physical Laboratory (NPLl), New Delhi, India has the responsibility of coordinating this programme and also acted as a reference laboratory. The program was identified by code number NABL-Pressure-PT002. The stability of the artifact was assessed by measurements made at NPLl before and after the circulation of the artifact. The comparison was carried out at 10 arbitrarily chosen pressure points i.e. 7 MPa, 14 MPa, 21 MPa, 28 MPa, 35 MPa, 42 MPa, 49 MPa, 56 MPa, 63 MPa and 70 MPa throughout the entire pressure range. Data are analyzed as per ISO/IEC GUM document. The normalized error (En) values are estimated in the entire pressure range. The En values of the 30 (53.6%) measurement results out of the total 56 reported herein, arc found in agreement with the reference laboratory. The En values of only one laboratory are within acceptable limits through out the entire pressure scale. Overall, the results are considered to be fairly good being the first proficiency testing for all the participating laboratories. This exercise gives an opportunity to calibration laboratory to demonstrate its technical competence of routine calibration services rendered to clients and to have the measurement tracebility to the national metrology institute, NPLI, New Delhi.

A layer of couple-stress fluid heated and soluted from below in porous medium is considered in the presence of uniform vertical magnetic field to include the effect of Hall currents. For the stationary convection case, the magnetic field and stable solute gradient postpone the onset of convection while the Hall current hastens the onset of convection. The medium permeability and couple-stress both postpone and hasten the onset of convection depending on the Hall parameter M. Graphs have been plotted by giving numerical values to the parameters, to depict the stability characteristics. The magnetic field (and corresponding Hall currents) and stable solute gradient are found to indroduce oscillatory modes in the system, which were non-existent in their absense. The sufficient conditions for the non-existence of overstability are also obtained.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowhiskers have been prepared using a multilayer ZnO(50 nm)/Zn(20 nm)/ZnO(2 μm) structure on a polished stainless steel (SS) substrate by high rate magnetron sputtering. The formation of uniformly distributed ZnO nanowhiskers with about 20 nm dia. and 2 to 5 μm length was observed after a post-deposition annealing of the prepared structure at 300-400°C. An array of highly c-axis oriented ZnO columns (70-300 nm in dia. and up to 10 μm long) were grown on Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at a high pressure (1 Torr), and Raman studies showed the activation of surface phonon modes. The nanosized powder (15-20 nm) and nanoparticle ZnO films on glass substrate were also prepared by a chemical route. Nanowhiskers showed enhanced UV light detection characteristics, and the chemically prepared ZnO nanoparticle films exhibited good sensing properties for alcohol.

Knowledge of the precise satellite position is a prerequisite for obtaining high time transfer accuracy in the Standard Time and Frequency Signal (STFS) broadcast by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) via INSAT. A technique of using the multi-station reception of the IN SAT Standard Time and Frequency Signal (STFS) broadcast for the purpose of ranging has been proposed. Using the multi-station ranging data with associated uncertainties that are usually observed for STFS reception data, it is possible to compute the satellite positions periodically. The orbit determination process consists of an iterative algorithm that refines an assumed initial orbit successively to agree with the actual orbit by matching the periodic position data computed and obtained experimentally. Shows by realistic simulations that with only 10 to 15 iterations it is possible to reduce the satellite position uncertainty to within a 200 m cube.

However, SEM and EDAX analysis were carried out in detail to confirm the particle size and the composition of LiBiO2 respectively. A 2016 coin type button cell was assembled with LiBiO2 as cathode and graphite as anode containing polypropylene separator and a solution of 1 M LiClO4 dissolved in 1:1 (EC+DEC) mixture as the electrolyte. There is a growing interest in devising wet chemical alternatives for physical deposition methods for applications involving thin films, e.g., catalysis. Deposition of platinum on thin gold films is often a problem leading to incomplete coverage and improper adhesion to solid surfaces. Gold substrates often need pre-activation for achieving complete coverage. Demonstrates here that dendrimers with proper functionalities and size work as well-defined nucleating agents and adhesion promoters. This feature is demonstrated using an amine-terminated dendrimer of generation 4.0. This approach allows one to obtain adherent nanoparticulate films of platinum on gold. Unlike other nucleating agents and adhesion promoting compounds, dendrimers have a well-defined ordered structure in terms of their space filling ability. The stability of the films obtained with adsorbed dendrimers is demonstrated using the electrocatalytic reactions of fuels like methanol. The films formed without dendrimers cannot sustain the electro-oxidation currents due to the instability of the films while the films formed with dendrimers can sustain currents for longer duration and for several cycles. The dendrimer-derived Pt films exhibit higher catalytic activity compared to other methods.

The increase in the magnetic transition temperature of Ni-Zn ferrite from 538 K in the bulk state to 592 K when the grain size is reduced to 16 nm is correlated to the enhancement in the AB su-perexchange interaction strength because of an increase in the magnetic ion concentration in the A-site on milling, as shown by the EXAFS and in-field Mossbauer studies. The particle size has been tailor-made by varying the concentration of the oxidant in the case of Mn-Zn ferrite. The critical particle size for the superparamagnetic limit has been found to be 25 nm with an effective magnetic anisotropy constant of 7.78 kJ m-3 which is about an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk ferrite. The exchange coupling is found to be strengthened in the nanocomposite magnet Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe, when the grain boundary anisotropy is removed by thermal annealing and thus facilitating the enhancement of the energy product.

Importance of comparable measurements among countries has been widely recognized in the last decades in the process of development of global economy, where measurements are key issues in the fare trade and social welfare. Recent activities of NMIs developed under the coordination of CIPM/BIPM to develop mutual recognition of calibration and measurements certificates of NMIs are under the framework of Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). Interamerican Metrology System (SIM) is promoting comparison exercises among NMIs or NMI designated laboratories. In the field of Metrology in Chemistry, measurement traceability is achieved mainly by the application of validated methods. In some cases CRMs play critical role in establishing traceability chain. In this work the important role of NMIs in providing proficiency tests with emphasis on traceable measurements and use of reference value based on the measurements of NMI which has demonstrated CMC. Some example of the efforts of CENAM as NMI is described to establish a national traceable measurement system for sector testing laboratories for environmental protection, food analysis and agriculture by disseminating accuracy of national measurements standards through proficiency tests. The use of unique criteria different from z-score is explained and shows the convenient practice to analyze historical performances of one individual laboratories or the group as a whole.

The evolution of bcc phase from the fee phase as a function of Fe concentration was investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The grain size, lattice parameters, and average hyperfine magnetic field distributions were estimated for the nanophase alloys. The fee phase was observed to persist up to 40 atomic per cent Fe substitutions, a mixed (fee + bcc) phase region up to 70 atomic per cent Fe and bcc phase beyond 70 atomic per cent Fe. The magnetic state of the alloys changed from nonmagnetic for x ≤ 0.3 to magnetically ordered state at room temperature for x ≥ 0.33, which lies in the fee phase region. The fee phase alloys of Fe with non-magnetic metals have very low magnetic transition temperatures. However, in this system the room temperature state is unusually magnetic.

For this purpose, In2O3 : Ag composite nanoparticle layers having well-defined individual nanoparticle size and composition have been grown by a two step synthesis method. Thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction "and transmission electron microscopy have been used to study the effect of post-synthesis heat treatment on the size and structure of the nanoparticles. In a program on the development of metal (e.g. Au, Ag, Cu and their alloy) nanoparticles in sol-gel derived films, attempts were made to synthesize different coloured coatings on glasses and plastics. The absorption position of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band arising from the embedded metal nanoparticles was tailored by controlling the refractive index of the matrix for the development of different colours. Thus different coloured (pink to blue) coatings on ordinary sheet glasses were prepared by generating Au nanoparticles in mixed SiO2-TiO2 matrices having refractive index values ranging from about 1.41 to 1.93. In another development, in situ generation of Ag nanoparticles in the inorganic-organic hybrid host leads to the formation of different abrasion resistant coloured coatings (yellow to pink) on polycarbonate substrates after curing. As expected, the SPR peak of Ag or Au is gradually red-shifted due to the increase of refractive index of the coating matrices causing a systematic change of colour.

Red blood cells deform and become twisted in hypertonic phosphate buffer saline and when trapped, experience an unbalanced radiation pressure force. The torque generated from the unbalanced force causes the trapped R.BC to rotate. Addition of Ca++ ions in the solution, keeping the osmolarity same, makes the cell membranes stiffer and the cells deform less. Thus the speed of rotation of the red blood cells can be controlled, as less deformation and in turn less asymmetry in shape produces less torque under the radiation pressure resulting in slower rotation at the same laser power.

Power of metrology is best realized when statistics is used to characterize parameters of interest from the data obtained from sample observations. From every process such as calibration, information is extracted upon which decisions can be made. Decision-making concerning metrology always involves uncertainty. Uncertainty characterizes an interval within which the measurement result is expected to lie with a certain probability called confidence interval. Accuracy, however, indicates ability of T&M instruments to make measurements to find closeness of measured value to the true value. Although metrologists prefer to use uncertainty, accuracy too is governing parameter for the specifications of the instrument. The instrument cannot be exploited to its fullest use in case its accuracy is not available, This paper presents a framework of statistical modeling to find accuracy for such type of instruments thereby achieving the resolution of the problem, something that customers will appreciate.

Pramana J Phys 2005, 65(5), 787-791.
Nearly monodispersed particles of silica were prepared and coated with uniform layers of titanium dioxide in anatase phase by hydrolysis and condensation of titanium butoxide. The coating thickness could be altered by adjusting the concentration of reactants (titanium butoxide and water) and the amount of added silica particles. Different coating thicknesses were deposited and studied using optical absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. It was found that silica particles of size 170 ± 5 nm were coated with 23±5 nm thick layer of titanium dioxide. Alternatively titania particles of size 340±5 nm were synthesized by controlled hydrolysis of titanium ethoxide in the presence of sodium chloride. These particles were further coated with 135±5 nm thick layer of silica to investigate changes in properties after changing the shell material.

A brief summary of our ongoing efforts to understand the surface properties of nanoparticles using fluorophores, namely pyrene alkanethiols, is presented. Excited state interactions were investigated by varying the length of the spacer group and the concentration of fluorophore. The flexible long alkyl chain tethering pyrene in Au-P2/Au-P3 allows free interaction between fluorophores resulting in excimer formation whereas the in-termolecular interactions are limited in the Au-P1 system due to the restriction imposed by the curvature of spherical gold nanoparticle. A gradual increase in the peak intensity ratio of III/I band of the normal fluorescence of pyrene was observed indicating that the surface of nanoparticle is more polar than the bulk solvent (toluene).

Presents an overview of the recent results on upconversion and photoluminescence of rare-earth ions in nanoenvironments. The role of the rare-earth ion concentration, crystal size and crystal phase on the up- and downconversion emission of rare-earth ions in oxide nanocrystals and their underlying mechanisms are discussed. It is also found that the luminescence lifetime of the excited state rare-earth ions is sensitive to the particle crystalline phase and size. The analysis suggests that the modifications of radiative and nonradiative relaxation mechanisms are due to local symmetry structure of the host lattice and crystal size respectively.

The 633 nm beam from a low-power He-Ne laser was split to form two counter-propagating pump beams and one probe beam in the DFWM geometry. Experiments were carried out by varying the parameters (angle of separation between the forward-pump and the probe beam, concentration of the dye in the gelatin film, writing beam intensities) that influence the phase-conjugate beam reflectivity. High reflectivity optical phase-conjugation is hereby reported for low-power lasers.

Ultrasonic thickness measuring instruments need to be periodically calibrated against a reference material with known dimension and velocity indues. Describes a procedure for development of reference blocks used in calibration of such instruments. Ten cylindrical steel blocks with different thickness (10, 20 ... 100 mm) and 40 mm diameter were established. Comparison measurements between mechanical and ultrasonic thickness measurements were carried out on these blocks. Different thickness gauges with different attached probes were evaluated using these blocks. It was found that the ultrasonic measurements and uncertainties are affected by the roughness of the probe contact surface with the blocks. The uncertainty of measurements is affected by the display resolution of the used instruments too.

Amorphous structure generated by mechanical alloying (MA) is often used as a precursor for generating nanocomposites through controlled devitrification. The amorphous forming composition range of ternary Al-Ni-Ti system was calculated using the extended Miedema's semi-empirical model. Eleven compositions of this system showing a wide range of negative enthalpy of mixing (ΔHmix) and amorphization (ΔHamor) of the constituent elements were selected for synthesis by MA. The Al88Ni6Ti6 alloy with relatively small negative ΔHmix (-0.4 kj/mol) and ΔHamor (-14,8 kJ/mol) became completely amorphous after 120 h of milling, which is possibly the first report of complete amorphization of an Al-based rare earth element free Al-TM-TM system (TM = transition metal) by MA. The alloys of other compositions selected had much more negative ΔHmix and Hamor but they yielded either nanocomposites of partial amorphous and crystalline structure or no amorphous phase at all in the as-milled condition, evidencing a high degree of stability of the intermetallic phases under the MA environment. Hence, the negative ΔHmix and ΔHamor are not so reliable for predicting the amorphization in the present system by MA.

Nanosized iron oxide, a moderately large band-gap semiconductor and an essential component of optoelectrical and magnetic devices, has been prepared successfully inside the restricted internal pores of mesoporous silica material through in-situ reduction during impregnation. The samples were characterized by powder XRD, TEM. SEM/EDS, N2 adsorption, FT-IR and UV-visible spectroscopies. Characterization data indicated well-dispersed isolated nanoclusters of (Fe2O3)n within the internal surface of 2D-hexagonal mesoporous silica structure. No occluded Fe/Fe2O3 crystallites were observed at the external surface of the mesoporous silica naiiocomposites. Inorganic meso-porous host, such as hydrophilic silica in the pore walls, directs a physical constraint necessary to prevent the creation of large Fe2O3 agglomerates and enables the formation of nanosized Fe2O3 particles inside the mesopore.

Structural properties of the resulted nanoparticles have been studied by means of X-ray diffractome-ter (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The absorption spectrum of the aqueous solution of silver nanoparticles showed the appearance of a broad surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak centered at a wavelength of 390 nm. The theoretically generated SPR peak seems to be in good agreement with the experimental one. Strong green fluorescence emission was observed from the water-suspended silver nanoparticles excited with light of wavelengths 340, 360 and 390 nm. The values of sound velocity, density and viscosity have been measured at 308 K in the system methanol + benzene + cyclohexane. From these data acoustical parameters such as adiabatic compressibility, free length, free volume and internal pressure have been estimated using the standard relations. The deviations of the sound velocity from that of experimental values are obtained using Nomoto's relation (NR), ideal mixing relation (IMR), free length theory (FLT), collision factor theory (CFT) and Nutsch-Kuhnkies (NK) method. The results are interpreted in terms of molecular interaction between the components of the mixtures. Methanol is found to be a good structure breaker that breaks the cyclohexane-benzene complexes. The excess values obtained confirms the presence of weak interaction in the system.
