At the beginning of the 20th century, Einstein revolutionized the notions of space and time, first through special relativity and then, a decade later, through general relativity. Conceptual ideas " underlying general relativity are explained and its physical ramifications summarized in general terms, without recourse to advanced mathematics. This theory is perhaps the most sublime creation of the human mind. Nonetheless, it has become increasingly clear that it too has serious limitations which can be overcome only through another dramatic revision of our notions of space and time. Concludes by providing glimpses of what awaits us in the 21st century.

Various types of instabilities related to submerged bodies and multi layerd fluids are briefly discussed.

Summarizes works on design and fabrication of the novel microoptical elements for femtosecond applications. Authors found the optimized condition of inductively coupled plasma equipment for etching fused silica gratings, so deep etched optical elements for high efficiency can be fabricated. Developed a two layered structure with the reflective Dammann gratings for splitting and measurement of the femtosecond laser pulses. The most attractive feature of this approach is that the conventional beam splitter is avoided. The conventional beam splitter would introduce the unequal dispersion due to the broadband spectrum of high-power ultrashort laser pulses. Implemented the Dammann FROG apparatus by using two-layered reflective Dammann gratings for measurements of the short pulses of 11.7 fs, the simple pulse of 77 fs, and the complex pulses over 1000 fs, Excellent experiments are obtained with the small FROG errors. Novel microoptical elements are useful for developing new femtosecond information processing techniques.

Piezoresistive properties of resonant tunneling structure made of undoped InGaAs/AlAs double-barrier quantum layers have been experimentally investigated, and the resonant tunneling structure was grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on semi-insulation (001)-oriented GaAs substrate. We found that the piezoresistivity of such quantum layers is about one order higher than that of the commonly used silicon structures. Micro accelerometers based on InGaAs/AlAs double-barrier resonant tunneling structures have also been designed and fabricated by control hole technique.

The present status of carbon nanotube's electromechanical properties was reviewed. The relationships among the carbon nanotube's resistance, gauge factor and the rates of change of the band gaps with strain (dEg/dε) were analyzed and simulated. Then, a micro/nano combined device and method for measuring the piezoresistance property of carbon nanotube were proposed. The device is consisted of a silicon chip and a printed circuit board which is used for loading and leading wire. The microelectrodes were fabricated on ,the silicon chip by FIB and a CVD-growth single-wall carbon nanotube was connected with the microelectrodes. The voltage-current characteristic of the carbon nanotube was measured using the proposed device. The relationship between the current and the voltage is basically linear, which demonstrates that the carbon nanotube is metallic. The experimental results show that the micro/nano combined device can be used for measuring the piezoresistance of carbon nanotube in our future work.

Aligned array of single-walled carbon nanotubes on a substrate is synthesized by chemical vapour deposition of methane. The combined synthesis and FIB technique presented here demonstrated the nanotube devices with metallic electrodes. Sample characterization was carried out with SEM pictures and I-V curves, which show that the nanotube with metallic electrodes may be widely used in both basic research and applications.

The next generation of applications for liquid crystal over silicon technology will be non-display oriented systems such as adaptive optical interconnects, optical switches and optical image processors. Developing these new applications both as reconfigurable optical interconnects (or switches) and adaptive optical interconnects. There is a growing need for optically transparent interconnects in both telecommunications networks as well as board to board and chip to chip systems and reconfigurable phase gratings or holograms offer a very exciting solution. Free space optical data transmission is becoming more and more important as the data rate in electronic systems increases into the GHz region in order to avoid data bottlenecks. Past research into free-space optical links has shown that a high level of manufacturing tolerance must be used to maintain the link, however, one way of avoiding these limitation is to use a reconfigurable liquid crystal phase hologram as a beam steering element to compensate for movement between the boards and maintain the optical data path. Present recent results in utilising phase holograms to steer free space optical beams in both a telecommunications switch and a board to board interconnect.

The medicinal value of many of the spices and condiments used in Indian cooking has been known for centuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bactericidal activity of spices and condiments used in the Indian kitchen on enteropathogens endemic to our country. Aqueous extracts of onion (Allium cepa Linn.), garlic (Allium sativum Linn.), ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.), black pepper (Piper nigrum Linn.), clove [Syzygium aromaticum (Linn.) Merrill & Perry], asafoetida (Ferula assafoetida Linn.), omum (Bishop's weeds) Trachyspermum ammi (Linn.) Sprague syn. Carum copticum Hiern.], mint (Mentha spicata Linn. emend. Nathh. syn. M. viridis Linn.), cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum Linn.) and turmeric(Curcuma domestica Valeton) were used in the study. Their antimicrobial activity against various diarrhoeagenic bacteria, viz. Salmonella typhi, S. typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Sh. dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Campylobacter jejuni were investigated by the disc diffusion and growth inhibition methods. Extracts of clove showed maximal antimicrobial activity against all the enteropathogens investigated. Black pepper showed antimicrobial effect on Sh. dysenteriae, C. jejuni, E. coli 0157 and E. coli 0102. Ginger and mint showed the least bactericidal effect on the enteropathogens studied. The remaining spices and condiments showed different degree of activity with different microbes. Spices and condiments, thus not only add flavour to the Indian cooking, but they may also protect us from various gastrointestinal endemic diseases.

Electrochemical bilayer actuators were fabricated from conductive electroactive polymer polypyrrole deposited by electrochemical polymerization. Films of polypyrrole doped with dodecylbenzene sulphonate (PPy-DBS) and with gold coating on one side were prepared by galvanostatic electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole. Polystyrene sheet (used for over-head-projector) with thermally deposited gold film, was used as working electrode. The strong interaction of pyrrole with gold was made use of to get a freestanding polypyrrole film with gold coating on one side (PPy-DBS/Au). Bilayer actuators, were fabricated from these freestanding films and tested in 1 M LiClO4 solution. The actuator showed bending of up to 90° on both sides on electrochemical reduction/oxidation under an applied potential of 2-3 V. The applied voltage determined the response time, which was 2 to 3 s. The actuator action was also observed with low frequency ac signal.

The experiments are conducted to study the effect of temperature on effective thermal conductivity of Cucumis sativus (L) (Cucumber) and Luffa cylindrical (L) Roem (Ghia tori). The moisture content and thermal conductivity were measured by oven drying technique and by thermal probe method respectively. The effective thermal conductivity increases with increasing temperature. However, between 298 K to 303 K (near room temperature) it decreases with temperature. This behaviour needs further exploration.

Collisional effect of electrons as well as ions have significant effect on the stability analysis of lower hybrid drift modes in the ionosphere. Electron collisions stabilize the mode and cause a density gradient threshold for the instability. This threshold results in restriction on the interpretation of 155 and 415 MHz backscatter results as being due to lower hybrid drift instabilities and suggests measurement to determine whether the instability can account for the backscatter.

After a brief theoretical analysis, the results of a detailed numerical computation have been presented. Application of equidistant low frequency grating for testing of concave cylindrical mirrors and positive cylindrical lenses is described. The equipments needed for the testing of cylindrical mirrors are visible He-Ne laser, microscope objective, well corrected collimating lens and low frequency grating. The method is found to be useful for revealing the hills, valleys and zonal errors of cylindrical surfaces of medium radius of curvature. The method is useful for estimating the uniformity of cylindrical wavefront emerging out of a cylindrical lens. A method for testing elliptical cylinder surface has also been proposed.

Radio Frequency Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (RF MEMS) based switches are expected to play a key role in the field of microwave switching. Traits like low-loss performance; zero-power consumption and very low inter-modulation distortion have made these switches well suitable for high-performance microwave and millimeter-wave circuits. The design of RF MEMS switches, however, require sophisticated modeling techniques because of their complicated 3-D geometries with critical aspect ratios and strong in-homogeneities. In this paper, the effect of various geometric dimensional parameters on the electromagnetic and mechanical behaviour of a shunt capacitive MEMS switch using finite element method based Ansoft High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software tool has been presented. This exercise will provide a better insight into designing a reliable and high-performance MEMS shunt switch.

Increasing demands on information storage raises renewed interest in volume holography. Conventional approaches used for theoretical analysis of the volume holographic processes are not adequate when complicated wavefronts are involved since they can only deal with simple cases. The present work exploits the fact that most holographic systems involve several waves that may propagate at large angles but each of them contains only a relatively narrow spatial frequency band. Applying a recently introduced narrow band approximation together with a Fourier optics approach to volume holography author analyze the capabilities of volume holographic information storage as well as the use of volume holograms for beam shaping. Simulation results demonstrate the power of the method and show good correspondence with earlier experimental studies.

Majority of flare activity arises in active regions which contain sunspots, while Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) activity can also originate from decaying active regions and even so-called quiet solar regions which contain a filament. Two classes of CME, namely flare-related CME events and CMEs associated with filament eruption are well reflected in the evolution of active regions. The presence of significant magnetic stresses in the source region is a necessary condition for CME. In young active regions magnetic stresses are increased mainly by twisted magnetic flux emergence and the resulting magnetic footpoint motions. In old, decayed active regions twist can be redistributed through cancellation events. All the CMEs are, nevertheless, caused by loss of equilibrium of the magnetic structure. With observational examples it shows that the association of CME, flare and filament eruption depends on the characteristics of the source regions.

Phase change materials for use on WORM media are engineered instead to give stability, durability and longevity and in this respect they actually outperform the classic ablative layers. Channel-encoded data, with ECC protection, in a WORM Phase Change layer can never be altered.

In 1991, a 3.5" MO disc for data recording was introduced. Then, in 1993, digital audio mini-disc was launched to the consumer market. Optical media such as MO, CD-R and DVD are rapidly becoming the next generation recording media. The. shift to digital sound and video, along with increasing quantities of data handled by computers, is expected to spur strong growth of the DVD market in the coming one to two years.

Considers the physical layer transmission impairments while establishing a call in a wavelength-routed optical network. The impact of different routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms on the crosstalk performance of a 4x4 mesh-torus and a 15-node mesh network has been studied. Considers both switch-induced crosstalk and the crosstalk induced by the multiplexers and demultiplexers. A fast and accurate approach is employed to study the impact of gain saturation of Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA's) on the received signal quality of a 15-node network of interconnected rings. Previous works have approximated the measured EDFA gain curve by curve fitting approach. EDFA gain is numerically detained using the fast and accurate approach. The crosstalk and EDFA gain saturation can lead to poor received signal quality at the destination node. This results in increased receiver bit error rate (HER). This implied that some of the routes will deliver a signal quality which is unsatisfactory. To ensure that no resources are wasted on those connections which cannot deliver an acceptable signal quality, this paper uses an event-driven simulation which incorporates on-line BER calculations. A call is accepted only if the BER at the destination node is less than 1012; otherwise it is rejected.

Pion-nucleon charge exchange scattering at few GeV energies is studied using Regge phenomenology. Charge exchange differential scattering cross-sections throughout the t-range 0 ≤ t ≤ 1.5 (GeV/c)2) are calculated using Regge theory and are compared with the available experimentaal data.

As MEMS design matures and migrates from process centric design to performance based design, MEMS designers would need a rational method for selecting an appropriate material that is not based on ease of processing alone. While there is a growing number of thin film materials that can be used in micromachining for MEMS devices, the selection of a particular material is rarely based on quantifiable criterion that relates directly to the optimum performance of the device. In this study, we present a methodology for creating material related device performance indices that can be used for selecting best possible material for a device. This study is inspired by the Ashby approach and its extension to the microworld in recent studies, where materials are graded on material performance indices and the most appropriate material is selected from the Ashby charts so created. We extend this concept further in this paper and create device performance indices that can be used to grade MEMS materials in performance parameter space. We first create and discuss a material index for thermoelastic damping, an important index for vacuum packed dynamic MEMS devices that has been missing from the list of performance indices previously considered. We present two case studies of material selection, for a MEMS gyroscope and a MEMS ultrasound transducer, to illustrate the methodology and show two different approaches for creating optimality criterion in the presence of several competing performance indices.

Presents a micromachining-based piezoelectrically actuated array microjet for biomedical purposes such as inhalation drug therapy (IDT) and drug microencapsulation. The microjet consists of a reservoir and a fluid chamber, which is formed by a piezoelectric transducer bonded to a silicon chip with numerous micro nozzles. Inside the fluid chamber, a continuous pressure wave generated by the piezoelectric transducer propagates towards the silicon chip and squeezes the liquid out through the nozzles. The pressure wave in fluid chamber is numerically simulated using finite elements method to give a reference for nozzles arrangement. Diameter and velocity measurements of droplets, temperature estimations on working device and a preliminary animal experiment of IDT are done to characterize the microjet. As a result, the microjet could be a promising tool in biomedicine field.

Sensor arrays capable of sensing different gases combined with a sampling system and a means of pattern classification and recognition comprise a basic system for an 'Electronic Nose' In the present work, a complete process for the fabrication of micro-cavities with sensing electrodes and volumes ranging from 2.5 to 12 nano-liters for the development of polymer gas sensors has been reported. An array of eight sensing cells in four sizes have been fabricated using SU-8 negative tone resist through UV-LIGA process developed at CEERI, Pilani. The length and width of the SU-8 cavities are: 250 x 250, 300 x 300, 500 x 500 and 500 x 600 micron and the depth of each of them was optimized to be 40 micron. These cavities filled with different polymer composites comprise the basic sensing cells for a variety of gases. The current paper presents the salient features of the fabrication process in detail and the results obtained in ethanol and methanol ambient using a polymer composite developed through dissolution of styrene and polyaniline in PMMA. A number of other composites such as Pc-Ppy, Pr-Ppy, Fc+-PPy have also been synthesized and tested for a high sensitivity in carbon monoxide.

With the use of CCD as a recording device in holography, the information regarding a complete 3-D volume can be stored in the digital hologram. The numerical reconstruction of such optically generated and digitally recorded hologram gives a quantitative measure of the intensity and phase of the complex object wavefront as digital complex images. This capability elevates the purviews of holography as a scientific and technological tool. The present paper reviews the application of digital holography in three-dimensional object recognition and allied uses for securing holographic 3-D data with special reference to investigations being carried out at IIT Delhi.

Alkali (Li, Na, K) and lanthanum doped barium titanate has been prepared by solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction studies suggest the compound is in tetragonal phase with small change in c/a ratio. Detailed studies of dielectric constant as a function of temperature (40-300°C) and frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) suggest that the compounds do not have relaxor behaviour and undergoes diffuse type of phase transition. Curie temperature is found to be independent of type of alkali doping and measuring frequency. However, maximum dielectric constant and resistivity are found to be strongly dependent on frequency and type of doping.

The investigation has been made as a first step towards realization of a broad-band microstrip antenna structure at a lower frequency range, taking advantage of the reduction in antenna resonant length when built upon a ferrimagentic substrate. A simple and accurate theoretical formula for input impedance of a quarter wavelength microstrip antenna has been deduced and its variation with frequency has been shown by a curve.

The 252Cf radioisotope and 24l Am-Be are intense neutron emittecl that are readily encapsulated in compact, portable, sealed sources. They have wide range of applications in laboratories, industries and medicines, because of their high flux and reliable neutron spectrum. They are cost-effective neutron sources for Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA). PGNAA method can be used. in medicine for neutron radiography and body chemical composition analysis. 252Cf and 241Am-Be sources generate not only neutrons, but also emit high-energy that are useless when using PGNAA method. Also the sample in medical treatments is a human body that is forced to be under the harmful bombardments of undesirable gamma-rays. In addition accumulations of these high-rate gamma-rays in the detector volume eventuate simultaneous pulses that can be piled up and distort spectra in the region of interest (ROI). All of these restrictions forced us to attenuate these gamma-rays in a practical way without being concerned about losing the neutron flux or significant undesirable alteration in the neutron spectrum. Gamma-rays contribute 68% of the total activity from a 252 Cf fission neutron source and 37.5% from a 241Am-Be. To reduce these gamma-ªray components, spherical shields of variable radius, made of Pb, Bi and Hg separately, were considered that enclosing neutron source. Gamma-ray shielding effects and optimum radius of spherical shield and the proper material have been investigated and compared with the unfiltered case, bare source, by Monte Carlo simulation, using MCNP 4C code.

Response functions of a 3x3 in. NaI detector, which is mainly used in PGNAA applications, have been calculated by using MCNP-4C code. Calculated results are compared with measured data by using standard γ-ray sources to check their accuracy. γ-rays from radioisotope sources were used in the range from 0.081 to 4.438 MeV for this determination. Through the precise modeling of the detector structure, the agreement between both results has been improved.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new imaging modality used to visualise the microstructures beneath tissue surface. It has been demonstrated that this technique provides images with micron resolution in a non-contact and noninvasive way. Traditional OCT is time domain OCT (TDOCT) which is characterized by its reference arm scanning. In recent years, a new approach of OCT based on Fourier domain interferometry is emerged, i.e. Fourier domain OCT (FDOCT). FDOCT avoids scanning in the reference arm, thus makes high-speed acquisition possible. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of FDOCT. Following a discussion of the basic theory of FDOCT, different set-ups have been presented. Finally, some of the latest progress in FDOCT is listed.

We discuss the convergence of Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm in experimental numerical cases and present practical implementation using a single focal plane. We analyse the convergence of muti-pupil rephasing algorithm. This technique allows for large diameter sparse aperture passive imagery using real time rephasing actuators. Finally. we discuss the possibility of synchronous detection of incoherent light and the possibility to extend radioastronomy correlation technique to the infrared dornain.

Exploitation of the Pockels effect significantly reduces the thickness of the slab.

Reports on optical tweezers using near field illumination. The near field was generated using the geometry which was demonstrated earlier, employing the evanescent field generated by total' internal reflection of a lightly focused beam at the interface between two media. The focused evanescent field was characterised using a scanning near field optical microscope (SNOM). The characteristics of the near field tweezers were studied experimentally and theoretically and good agreement was found. The near field tweezers as demonstrated here would be of great use especially in studying the biomolecules at a nanometric scale.
