Seeds of ten different cultivars of barley, collected from Economic Botanist Rabi Cereal C. S. A. U. Kanpur have manifested wide variation in there seed producibility and chromosomal behaviour having 2n=14 chromosomes. In each observation of quantitative traits and chromosomal behaviour, the genotypes looked normal but in some cases loose chromosomal association and reduced chiasmata frequency per bivalent were observed. In some cases delayed separation, formation of laggards and bridges were also observed at Anaphase. Thus pollen fertility varied between 77 to 80 % which indicates stable yield potential.

History of Indian seaweed research is not more than seventy-five years. The state of the Indian seaweed resources was last reviewed in 1998 and subsequently lot of new information relating to resources, utilization and commercial cultivation has been added. The main objective of the present review is to gather and analyse all such additional information made available by recent workers in the last eight years. The most recent quantitative estimates for seaweed biomass recorded in the literature for different coastal areas of India are given. An attempt has also been made to provide information on commercial utilization of natural resources, import-export trend for seaweeds and seaweed phycocolloids. Industrial utilization of seaweeds and cultivation of economically important seaweeds in India, socio-economic profile of seaweed collectors, future possible utilization strategies to be adopted for conservation of germplasm and introduction of legislation policies for their controlled harvesting and sustainable utilization are elucidated in detail. When compared with the world scenario, estimates for India do not suggest the existence of rich seaweed resources. Though data on different coastal states are abundant qualitatively as well as quantitatively, they are inconsistent and incomplete and methods adopted for estimation varied considerably. The quantitative data are generally confined to estimates of corresponding harvest or of standing stalk; however, there is little direct evidence of how these estimates are related to sustainable annual harvest.

The highest accumulation of proline increased with increasing salinity upto extreme level of 100 mM NaCl.

Isolate of Sorghum mosaic virus (SrMV) affected plant growth and grain yield of Sorghum considerably. Sorghum seedlings, when inoculated at second and fourth leaf stages using viruliferous plant hopper (Peregrinus maidis) had premature death where as seedlings inoculated at 6, 8 and 10 leaf stage, had considerable reduction in mean plant height (70.67 cm), mean internode length (5.67 cm) in comparison to healthy plants respectively. In addition, there was considerable reduction in fresh and dry shoot and root biomass of infected plants. The latent period of SrMV in the host varied from 9 to 18 days depending on the stage of seedlings at inoculation. Upon artificial inoculation, under field conditions, significant reduction in grain yield up to 94.9% was observed when plants were inoculated at the fifth leaf stage in comparison to 70.2 % loss at the 10-11th leaf stage respectively.

Trichoderma viride was found to be tolerant upto 80 percent leaf extract of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, whereas the Alternaria brassicicola was susceptible to a dose of less than 70 percent, under laboratory conditions. Exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of leaf extract had no effect on the in vitro antagonistic ability of T. viride. While combination of T. viride and reduced dose of leaf extract (65%) completely controlled disease incidence in cabbage seedlings as compared with control.

Variation in phenology and water relations was studied in Pinus roxburghii Sarg. (chir pine), a co-dominant tree species in the Churia Hills of south-central Nepal. Measurements were carried out from September 1999 to February 2001, at a monthly interval except during the rainy season. Phenology, soil water-potential at 15 cm (soil Ψ₁₅) and 30 cm (soilΨ₃₀) depth, tree water potential (predawn, Ψ_pd and midday, Ψ_md), P-V curve analysis, xylem conductance (specific xylem conductance K_s and leaf specific conductance K_t), and wood properties (wood water content WWC and density D_w) were measured. Leaf life span of chir pine was nearly 13 months. New leaf growth and leaf fall occurred simultaneously during March - April. Lowest soil Ψ (-1.6 MPa) and tree Ψ_pd (-0.8 MPa) were recorded in March while the tree Ψ_md (-1.7 MPa) was lowest in April. Before leaf fall began in February, there was sharp reduction in tree Ψ_md (-1.6 MPa). During leaf expansion (March to May) tree Ψ_pd, nearly remained stable (-0.8 to -0.7 MPa). Chir pine of Churia Hills had high dehydration tolerance as compared to other pine species. Higher wood water content and death of leaf tissue at the time of bud break were the important strategies to maintain favorable water status during the dry but phenologically active period. Chir pine showed close resemblance to trees of dry tropical forest in its seasonality of leaf production and shedding in response to soil moisture and tree water status. Greater access to soil water than associated tree species may be one of the major strategies used by chir pine to replace broadleaved dominant species in lower altitude, a succession observed in many forests of Himalayas.

Effect of different concentrations (1%, 2.5%, 5% & 10%) of water-extracts of Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) On Chara braunii has been reported. The plant body becomes healthy with normal photosynthesis at lower concentration while toxic effects are evident in higher concentrations. Percentage value of mitotic cell division increases at lower concentration, however, there is a decrease at higher concentration. These values are directly proportional to the concentration and duration of treatment. Higher doses inhibit survival patterns. The medicinal extracts induce karyological aberrations and their frequency increases with increasing concentration during the treatment.

Muriyad wetland is a part of Kol lands of Thrissur district of Kerala. Algal diversity of the wetland was analysed with a view to assess the water quality, habitat integrity and trophic web stability of the wetland. More than seventy-nine species of algae from twenty-two families were recorded from this wetland. Out of this, forty species belonged to a single family, Desmidiaceae (Desmids). The gut content analysis of some herbivorous fresh water fishes collected from the wetland revealed that fourteen genera of algae formed the major food source of the fishes of which desmids were the dominant group. The seasonal distribution of algae of the class Chlorophyceae shows that fifteen species were seen in pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Fourteen species were seen exclusively during the pre-monsoon season, three species only during the monsoon and six species only in post-monsoon season. In blue-greens, only two were exclusively found during post monsoon season. Six species were represented during pre- and post monsoon season but they were absent during the monsoon season.

Four genera of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza (AM) fungi viz: Acaulospora, Giaspora, Glomus and Scutellospora were isolated from these soil samples. Qualitative and quantitative distribution of these fungi were studied. Genus Glomus was found to be dominant and widely distributed while Acaulospora was distributed poorly. Scutellospora was dominant in sandy soil. The black soil harboured all AM genera.

Whole chain electron transport and the photosystem 2 electron transport activities were declined sharply in thylakoids treated at temperatures above 40°C while photosystem 1 mediated electron transport showed no decline in activity. Photosystem 1 assays with 2, 6-Dichlorophenol indophenol was not inhibited even at a preheated temperature of 50°C while N, N, N', N'-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (TMPDH₂) and 3,6-diaminodurol(DADH₂) were reduced to about 60%. PS 2 lost its sensitivity to uncoupler NH₄Cl at 30°C while PS 1 retained sensitivity to the uncoupler up to 45°C. At 35°C, the extent of noncyclic methyl viologen mediated electron transport supported proton uptake was inhibited by 80% while pyocyanin mediated cyclic proton uptake was reduced by less than 15%.

Berberis tinctoria Lesch. is an endemic plant to high hills of Nilgiris having lot of medicinal properties. For its better conservation through mass multiplication, attempts have been made to standardize tissue culture technology. The results of the study revealed that the basal medium containing BAP and NAA each at 0.5 mg/1 was found to be optimum for callus formation. Shoot proliferation was highly effective in the basal medium supplemented with BAP at 0.5 mg/1. The root initiation was maximum in the basal medium containing the NAA at 1.0 mg/1 and the plantlet establishment was successful in the hardening medium composed of vermiculite and soil in the ratio of 1:1.

Leaves of 61 species belonging to seven genera of the family Vitaceae were studied for the petiole size, leaf size, number of veins and teeth in leaf. The mean value of petiole length was maximum in Cissus L (260 mm) and minimum in Ampelopsis A. Rich, ex Michx. (24 mm). The range of leaf length in the family was 30 to 350 mm and breadth 20 to 290 mm, suggesting the shape of leaflets to be lanceolate in Cayratia A.L. Juss., Tetrastigma (Miq.) Planch, and Leea van Royen ex L. Maximum thickness of leaves was noted in Cissus setosa Wall. (=Cyphostemma setosus (Wall.) Alston). Number of veins and teeth were maximum in Leea van Royan ex L. and Ampelocissus Planch, respectively. Classification based on leaf characters shows marked variations within the genera. Such studies have obvious significance in taxonomy of the family Vitaceae.

Ethnobotanical studies on plants used by Bhil, Gamit, Gavit, Kokani, Mavachi, Padvi, Pawara Tadvi, Valvi, Vasave and local people were carried out in Nandurbar district in Maharashtra state, India, Plants utilized to cure various diseases like diabetes, jaundice, asthma, blood-pressure, obesity due to enlarged thyroid glands, stomach disorder, kidney trouble, etc. and also to protect from snake-bite have been studied ethnobotanically. 55 plant species used for human health care are enumerated in tabular from with their scientific and local names, families etc.

Germination and anatomy of the seed of Plukenetia conophora Muell.-Arg. (syn. Tetracarpidium conophorum (Muell.-Arg.) Hutch. & Dalz. (Euphorbiaceae) were studied. Seed germination is epigeal, though initially it appeared cryptogeal. The seed develops a hook-like succulent epicotyl which is green in colour and plays photosynthetic role until the first foliage leaf appears. Fresh P. conophora Muell-Arg. seeds do not germinate readily at temperatures above 20-25°C. Percentage of germinability was 75%. Scarification treatments to seeds enhanced germination rate which was indicated by the emergence of a greenish epicotyl 8 days after sowing before the radicle. Two days later, the radicle emerged with a mass of adventitious rootlets. Treatment with 0.1 M hydrochloric, 0.1 M sulphuric, 0.1 M nitric-acids and 0.1 M hydrogen peroxide (I) gave some positive significant responses to germination rate. Ordinarily, dried seeds (sun-dried for 17 days) took 20 days to germinate. Diagnostic features include anisocytic stomata; the stomatal index of the seedling leaf being 15.30-20.00; the palisade ratio is 1-1.25; laticiferous vessels occur abundantly in the pith, wood, leaves, seeds and roots. Ducts containing aromatic oils were also observed. Phytochemical tests also confirmed the presence of essential oils in the seeds (conophor oil).

Withania somnifera is a subtropical shrub with important medicinal properties. In the present study, the efficiency of Selectively Amplified Microsatellite Polymorphic Loci (SAMPL) assay in assessing the levels of genitic diversity among W. somnifera genotypes was analysed. Some genotypes of W. coagulans were used as outlier. A comparison of the SAMPL assay was made with the standard Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) technique. The SAMPL assay revealed higer levels of polymorphism among the tested W. somnifera genotypes compared to the use of AFLP. Significantly higher level of polymorphism was detected with SAMPL within both Kashmiri and Nagori genotypes. Cluster analysis showed clear groupings within the W. somnifera Kashmiri, W. somnifera Nagori and W. coagulans genotypes. The Nagori genotypes are separated from the Kashmiri genotypes at low similarity value, indicating that Nagori and Kashmiri types are highly divergent. One of the W. somnifera-specific bands generated with SAMPL was used to develop a simple PCR-based assay. The diagnostic markers thus generated can be used at the seedling stage to distinguish W. somnifera Kashmiri, W. somnifera Nagori and W. coagulans genotypes.

Effect of plant gowth regulators on multiple shoots induction was studied in Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd Ex. Delile using MS basal media supplemented with plant growth regulators, IAA and BAP individually and in different combinations. Nodal explants from in vitro grown seedlings were taken as standard explants. The best multiple shoot forming capacity was observed in the medium with BAP at 4 mg/l as compared to IAA and combined effect of BAP and IAA favoured only single shoot initiation.

Floral phenology, pollination biology and breeding system were studied in Aristolochia tagala Cham. (Aristo-lochiaceae) grown under ex situ conditions. The flower exhibits structural features typical of fly-trap mechanism described for other Aristolochia species. Flowers show pronounced protogyny. Stigmas are receptive at anthesis and remain so for 24 h. Anthers dehisce 45-48 h after anthesis by which time stigma receptivity is lost. Chironomid fly (Diptera) is the pollinator. Attracted by the odour and colour of the flower, the flies enter it and are detained in the chamber of the perianth tube (where the anthers and stigma are located) for nearly 50 h. Their escape is prevented by the presence of dense downward-pointing hairs in the perianth tube. The nectaries provide food to the insects. Following anther dehiscence, the thorax of the flies becomes loaded with sticky pollen grains. Hairs on the inner wall of the perianth tube wither and facilitate the exit of the flies. When a fly carrying the pollen load enters a fresh flower, it brings about pollination. Manual pollinations showed that the species permits geitonogamous pollination. The percentage of fruit set in manually pollinated flowers is higher than that resulting from open pollination, confirming that pollination is a limitation for fruit set in the ex situ-grown population. Nevertheless, fruit and seed set is sufficiently high for ex situ conservation purposes.

Fertility restoration in cytoplasmic nuclear male sterile (CMS) line of cotton produce hybrid seed by honeybees as pollinator and reduces the cost of hybrid seed. Nectaries (both floral and extra floral) are essential to attract honeybees. The number of anther, pollen grains per anther, size of pollen are equally important for effective boll setting. The three parameters, viz; number of anthers per flower, pollen grains per anther and size of pollen were carried out. The Dixie king new was found superior for anther number, pollen number per anther and pollen size.

Epipelon or the sediment algae are widespread, occurring in all types of sediments into which light penetrates. Deals with the nature of epipelic flora of fifty selected freshwater tanks attached to the temples (temple tanks) of Kerala. The analysis of different types of sediments shows that the epipelon of the tanks fall under three major groups, viz. Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae, comprising of 105 species and 64 genera. The minor groups of epipelon are found to be made up of Cryptophyceae, Euglenophyceae and water fungi. It could be deciphered that the different groups of epipelon exhibit specificity to the type of soil.

Investigations on decomposition of mixed leaf litter of Narsapur forest carried out during 1997-1999, showed that rate of decomposition using litter bag method and the decay constant was 2.3.The effect of different physical factors and the role of microbes in the decomposition showed positive correlation (r² = 0.9690). The dynamics of organic and inorganic constituents of leaf litter were studied. The correlation coefficient r² was low in inorganic consitituent r²= 0.3605, while in organic constituents r² = 0.8823.

The use of trichome feature in taxonomic study is well known and here again the absence or the presence of particular types of trichomes or the types of hairs are important for the identity of genera and species of Melastomataceae of Sikkim Himalaya. There are 6 types of trichomes (with 5 subtypes), which either single or in combination can be utilised as one microcharacter for the identity of 7 genera and 13 species of Melastomataceae of Sikkim. Thus, it helps in the taxonomic treatment of genera and even the species.
