The genus Begonia Linn, is represented by 16 species (Clarke, 1879) or 15 species (Biswas, 1966) in Sikkim Himalaya, of which 10 species and 2 infraspecific taxa are studied. Metcalfe & Chalk (1950 ) had reported 8 types of trichomes, distributed among the different species of Begonia Linn. 6 types of trichomes are observed. The subtypes are also mentioned under three major types. An artificial key is presented for the identification of taxa based on hair types and their distribution on different organs.

Aerobiological survey was carried out over the field of Spinach. Around 71 types of air borne cathes were recorded. Airspora analysis revealed 66 types of fungal spores of which 2 belonged to zygomycotia, 17 to Ascomycotina, 4 to Basidiomycotina and 43 to Deuteromycotina. Spore types of pathogenic fungi like Alternaria, Cercospora, Curvularia etc. were recorded though there was no disease incidence to the vegetable crop.

Andrographis paniculata is a multipurpose plant of immense therapeutic value and wide geographic distribution. Induction of genic male sterility with γ-irradiation has been demonstrated. Male sterility was conditioned by a single recessive genie mutation that acted upon the tapetal layer surrounding the pollen sac and was also manifested as hypertrophied non-sporo-genous tissue, invading the anther locule. Female fertility remained unimpaired and fully intact. Also elucidate the consequences and significance of inter-varietal hybridization employing male sterile line as one of the parents. Positive heterosis in many yield attributes and metabolic pathway elaboration/intensification exhibited is suggestive of high breeding value of the genie male sterility developed in A. paniculata.

Highest number of multiple shoots developed from node culture than the shoot tip culture in both the species. Profuse rooting is also developed by successive subculture in rooting medium.

Present investigation aimes at understanding the role of root anatomical features imparting drought resistance in tomato. It was interesting to note that mutant derivative roots had more number of xylem poles along with increased diameter imparting drought resistance. Cultivated species with lower number of xylem poles and smaller diameter were found to be drought susceptible. In susceptible cultivars the number ranged between 16-23, whereas resistant genotypes were with 28-39 protoxylem vessels per microscopic field. Root length in drought resistant genotypes ranged between 49 - 71 cm as compared to 32-40 cm in stress susceptible genotypes. Therefore root anatomical and morphological parameters be considered while developing true and stable drought resistant tomato genotypes.

The plant species such as Aristolochia indica, Calotropis gigantea, Eclipta prostrata, and Thottea siliquosa are widely distributed throughout the area. The families such as Apocynaceae, Aristolochiaceae and Asclepiadaceae ranked first with respect to species richness (3 species each).

It has been monitored for five successive years which confirmed its stable variegated character. The clonal multiplication in five successive generations retained the parent variegation in the plantlets. Thus, variegated mutant forms a new addition to the world list of jasmines and to the garden ornamentals.

Healthy shoots, which have there own root system, are able to survive and become complete plantlets. The healthy well developed multiple shoots were individually separated and kept for rooting on various media composition. 80 per cent rooting was obtained in AKSG-S on RM₆ (MS+AdSO₄ 80 mg/l + IBA 1.0 mg/l). The highest rooting percent in AKSGM-1 (93%) was obtained on RM₃ (MS+IBA 1.0 mg/l) followed by AKSG-35 (86.67%) was observed. Similar results reported by Deokar etal. (2003) and they obtained 80% roots in spine gourd on MSHP + ADS 80 mg/l + IBA 1.0 mg/l + 0.9% agar agar and Geeta Kulkarni obtained (86.66%) rooting response to Kartoli on MS+3ppm NAA + 0.8% Agar + 3% sucrose with activated charcoal. In the investigation, in AKSG-5 (4.33) primary roots per culture with 4.17 cm root length and in AKSG-35 (4.67) primary roots per culture with 4.67 cm root length in AKSGM-1 (4.67) primary roots with 4.67 cm root length were recorded on RM₆ (MS+AdSO₄ 80 mg/l + IBA 1.0 mg/l) were recorded.

Investigation reports the findings on reproductive strategies in relation to ovule abortion of four Trifolium species, namely T. dubium Sibth, T. fragiferum L., T. pratense L. and T. repens L., forming natural populations in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The four species represent a spectrum of breeding systems. T. dubium is obligately selfed, T. pratense and T repens are obligately outcrossed, while T. fragiferum practices mixed mating system. AH these species suffer from ovule abortion, the rate and pattern however varies. In the two outcrosser species the rate of abortion is high, approaching 50%. In the obligately selfed species, it is invariably 50%. These three thus form one group. The species enjoying minimum ovule abortion and thus harnessing maximum reproductive potential is T. fragiferum, with mixed reproductive strategy.

By referring the literature and herbarium of Dr. B.A.M. University and visiting their localities, these plants were found disappeared. Some of these include Fumaria indica (Haussk.) Effect of spray treatment of different concentrations (1,10 and 50 μg/ml) of kinetin was studied on in vivo nitrate reductase (NR) activity and level of soluble protein in the leaves and nitronenase (N₂-ase) activity, leghaemoglobin content and soluble protein in the nodules of Vigna radiata. Spray of different concentrations of kinetin was given to the foliage of 15-day-old plants grown in sand culture under natural condition. The in vivo nitrate reductase (NR) activity and level of soluble protein in the leaves and nitronenase (N₂-ase) activity, leghaemoglobin content and soluble protein in the nodules were measured at weekly intervals after spray. In the sprayed plants (with 10 μg/ml) the in vivo NR activity in the leaves was maximum on day 7 after spray, whereas, the soluble protein was maximum on day 14 after spray. In the case of nodules the soluble protein and nitrogenease activity were maximum with 10 μg/ml kinetin on day 14 after spray, whereas, the leghaemoglobin content was maximum on day 21 after spray.

Effects of foliar application of different concentrations of IAA, GA₃ and kinetin on in vivo activities of nitrate reductase (NR) and nitrite reductase (NiR) were studied in the leaves of Vigna radiata. The results showed significant increase in the NR and NiR activities. The in vivo NR activity was maximum on 7 days after treatment for IAA and KIN and 14 days for GA₃. The in vivo NiR activity was maximum on day 14th after spray for IAA and day 7th after spray for GA₃ and kinetin. The optimum concentration was found 1 to be 10.0 mg/l for each plant growth regulator. The in vivo kinetics of leaf NR was also studied with the foliar application of the optimum concentration of PGRs. The Km value for leaf NR using KNO₃ as substrates was 5.0 mM for control and as well as for those sprayed with optimum concentration of each PGR. The optimum pH was also found to be same (pH 7.4) for control as well as for those sprayed with optimum concentration of each PGR.

Six pea varieties (Arkel, Azad PI, Bonneville, Green Pearl, Pusapragati and Local) were employed to isolate ten dominant fungi by blotter and agar plate method. Hundred seeds of each variety were employed to observe toxin effect. In all six varieties of pea, culture filtrates of Macrophomina phaseolina, Cladosporium oxysporum Helminthosporium tetramera proved to highly inhibitory against seed germination.

Nodal anatomical study of 22 species out of 70 Indian species of Ficus L. (Moraceae) has been presented. The studied species belong to the subgenus Urostigma of Corner's classification. The nodal anatomical structures of the studied species are variable from tri to multi-lacunar in different species and thus the heteromorphic nature is discussed with the classification system of Corner and King to emphasize the anatomical character.

Eight species of marine fungi (Seven Ascomycetes and one mitosporic fungus) were isolated and identified in the sea water foam samples collected from Goa coast (the Arabian sea). Arenariomyces parvulus Koch, A.trifurcatus Hohnk, Corollospora calossa Nakagiri et Tokura and C.gracilis Nakagiri et Tokura were found to be new reports for marine fungi of Goa.

Effect of sodium chloride salinity and PEG induced water stress on the behavior of enzyme - amylase during pigeonpea (variety ICPL-87) seed germination was investigated. The Nacl salinity significantly reduced the activity of enzyme a -amylase during all stages of seed germination. Such inhibition was more significant at 72,96 and 120 hrs. stages. Both lower (0.4%) and the higher (1.2 %) doses of NaCI were more effective in this respect at all statges of germination. Water stress was also imposed by PEG - 6000 (polyethylene glycol) with different osmotic potentials (-2, -4 and -8 bars). PEG treatment inhibited enzyme activity; the PEG treatment with -8 bar osmotic potential was highly inhibitory at later stages of germination.

Anatomy of the rachis, petiole and petiolule in 17 species and 14 genera of Meliaceae are investigated. The mechanical tissues in these organs are invariably sclerenchymatous and rarely collenchymatous. The xylem elements are additionally mechanical in function. The occurrence of vascular tissue in the form of distinct bundles, only an are-shaped strand or a continuous cylinder is noted in different organs. In certain plants, medullary bundles occur, e.g., Aphamamixis, Khaya. The variation in the distribution of sderenchyma, collenchyma and the vascular pattern apart from the shapes as observed in a transverse section of the leaf stalk can be used for the delineation of the taxa studied.
