Limnological conditions of carnivorous plant Utricularia L. habitats in Bangladesh have been studied from July 1999 to June 2001. During the period of study Utricularia aurea (with float) Utricularia aurea (without float), Utricularia stellaris and Utricularia exoleata were recorded in Rajshahi region. Yearly mean values of the water temperature, transparency, TSS, TDS, pH, DO, Eh, rH2, BOD5, electric conductivity, HCO3 chloride and total hardness indicate that the water quality of the Utricularia habitats were always alkaline in nature and overall water quality were in good level of natural condition. Recorded water parameters had statistically significant relation with Utricularia. Thirteen physico-chemical conditions of bottom soil of Utricularia habitats were measured. The associated algae and high important value index of Hydrilla vertirillata, Limnophylla heterophylla, Salvinia rotundifolia and Ceratophyllum submersum also indicate the organic and inorganic pollutant free water of Utricularia habitats. Day by day the habitats of Utricularia are decreased by the increasing of water pollution and in future we will be lost our interesting biodiversity. Now environmental protection rules are to be strictly imposed to protect and conserve the Utricularia habitats.

Soyabean (Glycine max), is a major source of protein and vegetable edible oil. It is high protein feed supplement for live stock of world. Glycine has a leghemoglobin gene. Biochemically, protein plays a variety of roles in life process. They catalyze chemical reactions (the enzymes), involved in transport and storage leghemoglobin), or serve as regulators. A pair wise sequence alignment and databases search shows similarities with Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (84%), kidney bean (80%), cowpea (77%), Pisum sativum (65%), Arabidopsis thaliana (53%) of legliemoglobin gene. This suggests that similarity of different species sequences confirm their relationship. Multiple sequence alignment carries structural interferences from the various species in plants. Here Authors get highly conserved regions probably corresponding to the active site and give clues to the function. The conserved patterns facilitate identification of other homologous sequences of leghemoglobin gene. Multiple sequence alignment of leghemoglobin gene contains suitable patterns that characterize the families of proteins. Most structure prediction methods for leghemoglobin show conserved pattern of hydrophobicity with the intervening residues and hydrophilic residues suggesting beta-strands on the surface.

From time immemorial Himalaya has been a major source of valuable medicinal and aromatic plants. Even today, a number of valuable species found here, are overlooked as far as their commercial exploitation is concerned. Among such species found in Western Himalaya region, 11 species viz. Achillea millefolium Linn., Arctium lappa Linn., Artemisia maritima Linn., Boenninghausenia albiflora (Hook, f.) Reichb., Crataegits oxyacantha Linn., Dracocephallum heterophyllum Benth., Hippophae rhamnoides Linn., H. salicifolia Don., H. tibetana Schlt., Hyssopus officinalis Linn, and Rosa webbiana Royle were identified which are having great medicinal importance but so far these were not exploited commercially in India. Therefore, keeping in view their economic and medicinal importance, future prospects for commercial utilization of these species have been discussed.

It would be therefore, avisable to fertilize maize with 120 kg N ha-1, 1/4 applied through organic sources + 3/4 through urea + BNF.

Cruciferous plants viz. cabbage, cauliflower, turnip, radish, mustard etc. that contain goitrogenic/antithyroid substances, constitute a portion of regular human diet. The effect of chronic feeding of fresh and cooked radish, R. sativus under varying state of iodine intake on morphological and functional status of thyroid in albino rats was evaluated by thyroid gland morphology and histology, thyroid peroxidase activity, serum triiodothyronine, thyroxine and thyrotropin levels. The consumption pattern of iodine and goitrogens of cyanogenic origin was evaluated by measuring urinary iodine and thiocyanate levels respectively. After chronic radish feeding, increased weight of thyroid gland, decreased thyroid peroxidase activity, reduced thyroid hormone profiles and elevated level of thyrotropin were observed resembling a relative state of hypoactive thyroid gland in comparison to control even after supplementation of adequate iodine.

Agrobacterium- mediated transformation of two Basmati rice varieties (Pusa Basmati 1 and Taraori Basmati) and a Japonica rice variety TNG67 (Tainung 67) was performed using LBA4404 (pSBl+pRKJ1 and pSB1+pRKJ2) strains harboring potato proteinase inhibitor 2 gene (Pin2) driven by Pin2 wound inducible promoter. β glucuronidase gene with an intron (pRKJ2) was used for transient Gus (uidA) expression and production of stable uidA expressing calli. Transformation frequency was higher in immature embryo derived calli as compared to the mature seed scutellar- derived calli in all the three rice varieties. The presence and copy number of the transgene was confirmed by a simple, rapid and low-cost polymerase chain reaction method. Clear distinctions were made between single and multiple copies of the transgene by comparing the band densities. Out of 108 independent regenerated T0 plants, ninety six confirmed the presence of transgene. More than 90% of the plants were fertile and roots of most of the plants harboring plasmid pSBl+pRKJ2 were found to be Gus positive (88.5%). Cut-leaf, cut-stem and whole plant bioassay of ten T2 transgenic rice lines of three cultivars during vegetative and earhead stage of plants under greenhouse and laboratory conditions showed significantly higher larval mortality and lower damaged leaf area as compared to the control (non-transgenic) plants indicating increased resistance against yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas walker).

Seventeen tropical grasses (Bothriochloa bladhii, Brachiaria mutica, Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha, Cenchrus ciliaris, Cenchrus seliger, Chloris gayana, Chrysopogon fulvus, Dichanthium annulatum, Heteropogon contortus, Panicum maximum cv. IGFRI, Panicum maximum cv. PGG 289, Paspalum notatum, Panicum antidotale, Pennisetum polystachyon, Setaria sphacelata, Tri - specific Hybrid (TSH) [(Pennisetum americanum x P. purpureeum) x P. squamulatum] and two legumes [Stylosanthes hamata (Caribbean. stylo), and Macroptilium atropurpureum] were studied for their physiological attributes under different light intensities in rain-fed semi-arid conditions. Rate of photosynthesis (P N) and stomatal conductance (Cs) decreased with decreasing light intensity and reached the minimum level under high shading (25% light intensity). TSH, P. antidotale, P. maximum and S. sphacelata maintained the highest P Nand Cs under shade followed by B. mutica, P. polystachyon and C. ciliaris indicating their adaptation to shade. In legumes, S. hamata maintained higher P N than M. atropurpureum under moderate shading (50%) and can be grown with trees having sparse canopies in tree-crop inter-cropping systems. Transpiration rate (TR) at 25% light intensity was half that in full sunlight. TSH, B. mutica, P. maximum, P. antidotale, S. sphacelata, P. polystachyon and S. hamata relatively maintained higher carboxylation efficiency and water-use efficiency (WUE) under shade followed by C. ciliaris, C. seliger, C. fulvus and B. bladhii. Chlorophyll content (a + b) was maximum under 50-75% shading in most of the species.

Rice in general is a salt sensitive crop. Seeds of two cultivars, viz. Kamini (salt susceptible) and Pusa 2-21 (salt tolerant) were allowed to germinate and grow in glass distilled water (control), 150 mM and 300 mM NaCI solutions, 4 μM brassinolide solution, 150 mM and 300 mM NaCI solutions supplemented with 4 μM brassinolide. Seed germination, seedling growth and hydrolytic enzymes (amylase and protease) associated with seedling development were adversely affected by NaCI salt stress. Reduction in DNA, RNA and soluble proteins and increase in peroxidase and free proline in rice seedlings were observed with increasing levels of salt stress. The effect was more conspicuous in Kamini than Pusa 2-21. Brassinolide, a steroidal component of plant origin was found to counter the- adverse effect of salt stress irrespective of tolerant (kamini) and susceptible (Pusa 2-21) cultivars. Ameliorative effects of brassinolide were associated with increase in the levels of nucleic acids, soluble proteins, peroxidase and free proline content under salt stress.

Effect of various concentration (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%) v/v of distillery effluent on various parameters like leaf area and chlorophyll content of Casuarina equsetifolia were studied. The chlorophyll content varied significantly among all the treatment at age of six months. Plants treated with 40% of effluent recorded highest chlorophyll content and greatest leaf area.

System was developed for in vitro regeneration of Pennisetum glaucum through organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis. Mature embryo and leaf base explants of Pennisetum glaucum (L) Br. cv HH B60 (Poaceae) were cultured on Murashige and Skoog agar medium supplemented with 11.3 μM of 2,4-D for callus induction. Embryogenic calli were induced within eight weeks. Percentage of callus induction and somatic embryogenesis was significantly higher in mature embryo than leaf base explants. Maximum shoot regeneration was obtained via organogenesis on MS medium supplemented with 4.43 μM of BAP and 4.64 μM of kinetin from the calli of both the explants. The frequency of plant regeneration through somatic embryogenesis was comparatively lower than organogenesis. Regeneration frequency was higher in mature embryo explants than leaf base explants. The shoots regenerated via organogenesis were elongated and rooted efficiently on MS medium supplemented with IBA (0.49 μM). The rooted plantlets were hardened and transferred to soil.

For micropropagation of adult apple (Malus domestica Borkh) rootstock M9, explants were harvested from pre-chilled (4±3°C) dormant cuttings forced in growth chamber. Primary explants were established by using a slightly modified version of culture initiation procedure developed earlier. Multiple shoots, raised by axillary branching of surviving explants, were obtained from established cultures in two cultural pathways: (i) repeat transfer of primary explants on the MS supplemented with BAP (2.22 μM), IBA (0.49 μM) and Kn (2.2 μM), and (ii) repeat subculture of harvested microshoots and basal portion of sectored proliferating clumps on the same but suitably PGR amended medium, in which cytokinins concentration was reduced by half. A 4-fold shoot multiplication was achieved during each sub culture of 3±1 week's duration that repeatedly produced crop of proliferated shoots without loss of vigour. Nodal segments (5-15 mm), obtained from in vitro raised microshoots were also used to initiate a new cycle of proliferating cultures. Isolated cloned microshoots (15-20 mm) with apical bud were cultured on MS basal medium supplemented with IBA (14.70 μM) for 8±3 d to initiate root. The microshoots were re-implanted in PGR free half strength basal MS medium with full complement of organics for 4±1 week for root development. The transferred in vitro hardened plantlets to polyvinyl cups or polybags, under carefully controlled descending RH regime of 95% to 70±5% over a period of 5±1 week, resulted in 80% ex vitro survival. The present protocol highlighted a novel strategy of micropropagation of apple rootstock M9 using three-step culture initiation procedure of forced primary explants.

Experiments were conducted to screen in vitro saplings of mulberry Morus alba (var. Sujanpuri and Local) for salt tolerance. Nodal explants were cultured on MS medium containing different concentrations (0, 0.41, 1.20, 2.49 mM, pH 5.8, 6.2, 7.2, 8.2 respectively) of Na2CO3. For shoot multiplication 2.5 mg/l of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) with 0.3 mg/l gibberellic acid (GA3) was used and rooting was induced on 1.0 mg/l of Indolebutyric Acid (IBA). Induced salt stress affected growth parameters like, % sprouting and survival initially but not significantly in 3rd and 4th subculture. Salt stress reduced both shoot and root development and led to the accumulation of soluble sugars, protein, proline, in both the varieties but the magnitude was higher in tolerant local variety than salt sensitive sujanpuri. Furthermore, the salt tolerance of local variety was indicated by lower amounts of chlorophyll degradation than sujanpuri.

Practicable regeneration protocol for in vitro morphogenesis of Capsicum annuum L. var. Pusa jwala, an important vegetable and spice crop was investigated by the induction of axillary shoot buds using nodal explants. Proliferation of axillary shoots was observed on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with BA or Kn alone. Addition of ascorbic acid to the shoot induction medium significantly enhanced the number of shoots. Maximum number of shoots was obtained on MS basal medium composed of 10.0 μM BA and 100 mg/l ascorbic acid. Rooting on in vitro produced elongated microshoots was achieved on MS medium containing 1.0 μM α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Well-rooted plantlets were established in plastic pots containing garden soil and acclimatized to controlled environment with 89% survival rate. Among the regenerants, no morphological abnormalities have been observed till now.

Loss assessment has been worked out in five forest tree species: Azadirachta indica, Albizia lebbeck Moringa oleifera, Ailanthus excelsa & Zizyphus jujuba, caused by Eutetranychus orientalis. In case of Azadirachta indica, all growth attributes: Length, collar girth, bio-mass wet & dry are showing significantly higher results in healthy seedlings (Non infested) than infested seedlings at 1% level of significance. In Albizia lebbeck, length & collar girth of healthy (Non infested) seedlings are significantly higher than infested seedlings at 1 % level of significance, while bio-mass (Wet) is significant at 5% level of significance. In Moringa oleifera. length of healthy seedlings (Non infested) is significantly higher than length of infested seedlings at 1% level while bio-mass (Dry) is significant at 5% level of significance. In Ailanthus excelsa, length, collar girth & bio-mass wet are significantly higher in healthy (Non infested) seedlings than infested seedlings at 1% level of significance. In case of Zizyphus jujuba, length, collar girth & bio-mass wet are significantly higher in healthy (Non infested) seedlings than infested seedlings at 1% level of significance. Thus the infestation of E. orientalis, on forest tree species greatly affected the growth attributes of seedlings.

Efficacy of different microbes for their antagonistic ability was determined in vitro against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi by dual culture method. Trichoderma harzianurn and T. viride exhibited the maximum antagonistic activity in vitro among the tested microbes. Seeds treated with T. harzianum and T. viride showed reduced pre-emergence and Fusarium wilt under greenhouse and field conditions.

Investigation were carried out on epidemiology of yellow rust of barley (Puccinia striiformis West. f. sp. hordel) in relation to weather variables (maximum and minimum temperature and relative humidity) during 2002 and 2003 summer season at the Experimentation Farm of Regional Agricultural Research Station of the university at Thickshey in Leh (a hot spot of the disease) under natural epiphytotic conditions. Revealed that first appearance of the disease was noticed in second week of August and its maximum development was coincided with the heading (ear emergence) to ripening stage during 3rd week of August to 3rd week of September when minimum temperature (6.4-9.1°C), maximum temperature (22.4-27.4°C) and relative humidity (77.0-86.1%) were prevailed as disclosed through the relationship between epidemic development and average of the values of the weather variables existed over the period during both the years of investigation. The simple correlation coefficients between the disease (dependent variable) and weather variables (independent variables) divulged that the minimum temperature played its significant negative role in the development of the disease. However, relative humidity showed its positive effect on disease development. The multiple regression equation indicated 92-94 per cent variation in development of the disease due to cumulative effect of the weather variables.

The entire ripening period was divided into three periods, namely the pre-climacteric period of three days, the climacteric period of one day and the post climacteric period of four days. The total phenol gradually decreased while the enzyme peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase and catalase enzyme activity increased during the ripening.

Bacterial blight (BB), a major disease of rice, is caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). Six distinct Indian isolates of Xanthomonas oryzae were tested on rice genetic backgrounds carrying single or multiple BB resistance genes. Three BB resistance genes were introduced into a susceptible line, MH2R, by marker-assisted selection, which resulted in a gain of resistance. In addition, Pusa Basmati 1 (PB1) transgenic lines carrying the BB resistance gene, Xa21, and IR72-Xa21 transgenic lines were evaluated after inoculation with the six Xoo isolates. It was found that PB1 lines expressing the Xa21 gene were susceptible to the six Xoo isolates. These results indicate that introducing multiple BB resistance genes by marker-assisted selection may be a more effective strategy in breeding for BB resistance against Indian isolates.

A collection of 35 lines of coriander, Cortoncerum stivum Linn., showed significant variability for plant hight, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, days to 50 percent flowering, days to maturity, number of umbels per plant, number of umbellets per umbel, number of grains per umbellet, 1000-grain weight, essential oil content, harvest Index and grain per plant. The heritability estimate was high for number of secondary branches per plant, days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, number of umbels per plant, 1000 grain weight, essential oil content and harvest index and low for number of umbellets per umbel and number of grains per umbellet. Grain yield per plant had positive and siginficant correlation with plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of umbels per plant, number of umbellets per umbel, number of grains per umbellet and harvest index. Path co-efficient analysis revealed that number of secondary branches per plant, harvest index, days to maturity and number of umbellets per umbel were the most important characters for selection of high yielding genotypes, as they had high direct positive effects as well as positive association with grain yield per plant.

Harvest index made sizeable indirect effect via primary branches per plant. Primary branches per plant made sizeable indirect contribution via harvest index.

Twelve Azospirillum isolates isolated from the rhizosphere of rice plant from various places of Varanasi region were purified and tested for their nitrogen fixation efficiency (nitrogen fixed mg/g of sodium malate) and growth parameters. Of these isolates, two were selected on the basis of their fast growth and better nitrogen fixation capacity. These two isolates were tested for their effect on plant vigour, grain yield and total biomass production along with standard biofertilizer strain on rice cultivars in pot experiment, Azospirillum has the ability to solubulise phosphate, produce growth promoting substances and exhibit biocontrol of soilborne diseases of rice caused by Helminthosporium oryzae (brown leaf spot), Pyricularia grisea (leaf blast) to some extent. Seed treatment with Trichoderma harzianum NBRI-1055 and Azospirillum and soaking of the seedling roots in Trichoderma harzianum NBRI-1055 and Azospirillum solution before transplanting significantly reduced the incidence of leaf blast and brown leaf spot diseases of rice as compared to control in all the cultivars. These treatments increased the vigour of the crop/plant, plant height, panicle length, number of effective tillers per hill, shoot and root biomass and grain yield in comparison to their respective uninoculated control in all the cultivars. The increase in root length and root biomass of plants was found in all treated plots than untreated control. The increased root length, root biomass and availability of more nutrients, growth promoting substances around rhizosphere provide better establishment of rice plants that helps to tolerate moisture stress more efficiently than uninoculated control during unfavourable conditions. Thus, the healthy plants can sustain in rainfed ecosystem without affecting much loss in grain yield.

Soil samples were collected from agricultural fields regularly amended with FYM and those without FYM amendment from six districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh to study the distribution of predacious fungi. Soils amended with FYM recorded higher frequency of these fungi than the unamended soils. Ten species of nematophagous fungi were recorded which differed in their dominance. Among the nematode trapping fungi A. oligospora was found with maximum frequency followed by Dactylaria brochopaga, D. eudermeta, D. gephyropaga, A. conoides, A. dactyloides and A. musiformis. Among the endoparasitic fungi. Harposporium anguillulae was recorded with maximum percentage occurrence followed by Catenaria anguillulae and Myzocytium vermicolum.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used as a tool for assessing genetic diversity and species relationships among 28 accessions of eggplant representing five species. Twenty-eight samples of eggplants were collected from different parts of the country. A total of 144 polymorphic amplified products were obtained from 14 decamer primers, which discriminated all the accessions. The value of Jaccard's coefficient ranged from 0.05 to 0.82. The similarity result indicates presence of high level of genetic diversity in eggplants and a dendrogram constructed by UPGMA method shows that S. incanum is closest to S. melongena followed by S. nigrum. Only one accession of S. nigrum and S. surattense was taken in the present study that showed grouping with each other. Genetically distinct genotypes identified using RAPD markers could be potential sources of germplasm for eggplant improvement.

Crataeva religiosa flowers profusely during March to May, when it sheds all its leaves. The flowers are large, hermaphrodite, actinomorphic and complete. Flowers open in the evening between 1900 and 2030 h followed by anther dehiscence at 1930-2100 h. Flowers offer pollen and nectar to the visitors, which include honey bees, moths, butterflies, bugs and birds. The plant is self-incompatible and obligate out-crosser. Fruit-set is restricted to only 22%. The beauty of the flowers as well as fruit production are adversely affected by the formation of floral galls induced by the insect, Neolasioptera crataevae Mani, order Diptera.

Effort was made to compare the efficacy of UV-C light and hot water treatment alone and in combination with each other to control post-harvest pathogens Aspergillus niger Van Teigh and Penicillium expansum Link isolated from mango and apple fruit respectively. Under in vitro conditions UV-C treatment at 10 cm distance at the doses viz.1.48 KJ/m2 for 2 min, 3.72 KJ/m2 for 5 min, 7.44 KJ/m2 for 10 min, 11.16 KJ/m2 for 15min, 14.88 KJ/m2 for 20 min were highly effective in inactivation of A. niger and P. expansum spores. Hot water treatment at 60°C was found to be most effective against the two pathogens at all duration of exposure ranging from 2 min to 20 min. Efficacy of hot water treatment at 50°C increases with increase in exposure time. However 40°C treatment irrespective of time duration did not significantly reduced spore germination of A. niger and P. expansum. All combination treatments of hot water at 40°C and 50°C followed by UV-C irradiation (at 10 cm distance) was effective in inhibiting spore germination of A. niger and P. expansum equivalent to hot water treatment at 60°C or UV-C irradiation with exposure time of more than 5 min.

A pot experiment was conducted to identify the resistant selections of rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris), grass pea (Lathyrus sativus), blackgram (Vigna mungo) and greengram (Vigna radiata). Among all the selections tested, only two selections of rajmash i.e. HUR - 202 and IIPR - 98 -2 were found resistant. However, 4 selections of P. vulgaris, 2 selections of L. sativus and only one selection of V. mungo showed moderate resistance. No cultivar of V. radiata was found resistant or moderately resistant. Per cent reduction in total plant fresh and dry weight of all the selections of all the crops were also found directly proportional to the root-knot index.

Seven and four autochthonous bacterial species were isolated from mid guts of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) and Spodoptera litura (Fabr.) respectively. Micrococcus varian(Migula), Micrococcus luteus (Schroeter), Bacillus subtilis(Ehrenberg), Bacillus megaterium (de Bary), Corynebacterium xerosis (Lahnann and Neumann), Proteus mirabills (Charles W. Perm), and Staphylococcus saprophyticus (Fairbrother) were recorded from H. armigera whereas S. litura had M. luteus, B. subtilis, B. megaterium and P. mlrabills. The Total Heterotrophic Population (THP) was higher in H. armigera than S. litura. Among the life stages tested third instars had less number of THP followed by fourth and fifth nymphal instars of both pests. Pinpointed, circular and irregular are the morphological characters of the bacterial population recorded from the gut of pests. Except M. luteus and B. subtilis, other bacterial species were eradicated from the gut of the pests by Ipomea carnea Austin (Jacq.) (Family Convolvulaceae) and Pterldlum aquilinum (Linn.) (Family Pteridiaceae) at 0.1%. Normally, amylolytic activity was higher (39.04%) followed by lipolytic (38.07%), caseinolytic (28.88%) and gelatinolytic (26.66%) activities in the bacterial strains isolated from the pests. Except for the lipolytic activity, all other enzymatic activities were highly reduced by these plant biopesticide treatments.

Several asexual fungi are found associated with Arthropods especially of which 700 to 750 species are pathogenic to insects. The white muscardine fungus [Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin] and the green muscardine fungus [Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin] have been recorded to infect 500 and 200 host species, respectively, being species specific. Entomogenous fungi have a unique mode of infection by infecting the hosts through spiracles and surface of integuments. The deposition of oxidized phenols (melanin) in cuticle by host phenoloxidase is the first overt response to fungal infection initially. Sucrose is a major ingredient of culture medium. Study was performed to investigate the influence of sucrose concentration on growth and ajmalicine production. Maximum packed cell volume (72%), fresh weight (65 g 100 ml-1), and dry weight (6.2148 g 100 ml-1) was recorded in medium containing 4% sucrose. About 9-fold increase in dry weight was recorded in medium with 4% sucrose. All growth parameters increased upto 25th day of incubation after which a gradual decline was observed. Ajmalicine accumulation started from 15th day of incubation and reached to maximum (60 μg g-1 dry weight) in 25th day of incubation in medium with 4% sucrose, which however gradually reduced on further incubation.

The Delhi Ridge is a green patch of land considered the "Breathing lung" or "Green lung" of Delhi. Total area of the Ridge is approximately 7,782 ha, which is about 0.6% of Delhi's total geographical area. The area of the Ridge is divided into four zones viz. North Ridge, Central or New Delhi Ridge, South Central Ridge and Southern Ridge which includes the Asola - Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. Regarding the flora of Ridge, Maheshwari published the flora of Delhi and included 531 plant species. From the part of Ridge included 188 plant species. Almost 40 years have paassed and no revisionary work on the floristics of Delhi is available except a few sporadic papers. Under a project "Vegetational Survey and Inventorisation of species in the Ridge Forest Delhi" quantitative and qualitative studies of plant were conducted and total 414 species were reported only from the area of the Ridge. Most remarkably, 37 plant species are now being reported for the first time from Delhi.

Java citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt.) slips were raised in different concentration of Fe from stress to toxicity levels in controlled glass-house conditions. Fe application stimulated both dry matter as well the fresh herb yield. Iron uptake 5.6 μg Fe ml-1 was required for maximum response in dry matter production and oil concentration. Significant positive correlation was observed in between fresh herb yield and dry matter production with total monoterpene oil(s) and citronellal contents. Graphical analysis of Cate and Nelson model indicated the critical Fe concentrations in leaves.

Combined inculation with Rhizobium + phosphobacteria and single inoculation with Rhizobium improved most of the investigated biometric as well as biochemical parameters.

Banana is India's premier fruit crop having great socio-economic significance. A range of Musa genotypes exists in local pockets, either cultivated or wild. Rajeli, an economically valuable genotype of the Western coast of Maharashtra, is traditionally grown for making Sukeli (dried bananas) of desired quality. At present, this unique cultivar is under threat of extinction due to fungal and viral diseases. It has successfully regenerated Rajeli plants via shoot-tip culturing and somatic embryogenesis. Prolific multiple shoot formation and elongation were induced in 72% of the cultures. Embryogenic callus was also obtained from male flower buds cultured on callus-inducing medium with 2, 4-D. Somatic embryos transferred to the medium with BAP showed plumule development, followed by complete plantlet formation on MS basal medium without any growth regulators. A large number of plants have so far been regenerated. The tissue culture system reported herein demonstrates its potential for use in genetic manipulation studies. Also, since the fruits can be dehydrated and stored for extended periods, Rajeli appears to be a suitable candidate cultivar for expressing therapeutic proteins.

Investigations have been carried out on occurrence, frequency and periodicity of aquatic fungi in three selected water bodies namely Upper lake, Sarangpani lake and Chiklod reservoir of Bhopal region (Madhya Pradesh). The study was conducted from August 2004 to July 2005. Water samples were collected every month from selected sites of three water bodies for the isolation of aquatic fungi. Similarly, physico-chemical parameters of water were also analyzed throughout study period. A total of twenty species of aquatic fungi belonging to eight genera were recorded from three selected water bodies. The occurrence, frequency and periodicity of fungi were also recorded. The maximum number of fungi was recorded during winter months while the minimum in summer months. Seasonal variations in the abundance of these fungi have been observed. Although, the variations in their abundance depend on several physio-chemical parameters of water but the temperature is found to be the governing factor.

A survey of angiospermic flora of Bhopal and its suburbs carried out during 2004-2005 revealed that number of arboreal species beautify the landscape of by their elegant presence. The study however, pertains to four species of flowering plants belonging to different families which exhibit cauliflory. The species are Artocarpus integrifolia, Couropita guianensis, Crescentia cujete and Kigelia pinnsta, which can be witnessed at various localities of the capital.

Seeds of broad bean (Vicia faba L.) var. major were treated with 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, concentrations of diethyl sulphate (DES) to induce variability in seven economic traits viz. plant height, days to flowering, days to maturity, pods/plant, seeds/pod, seeds/plant and 100-seeds weight. The direction of shift in mean values for plant height indicated that negative micromutations out-weighed the positive ones. While as for days to flowering, days to maturity, pods/plant, seeds/pod, seeds/plant and 100 seeds weight shift of mean was recorded both in positive and negative direction. Coefficient of variation was recorded to be higher in mutagen treated populations.

Effect of oxyfluorfen on macromolecular (DNA, RNA and Protein) contents of treated seedling was studied. As the concentration increase the percentage of DNA, RNA and Protein gradually decrease. The percentage of DNA, RNA and Protein content of control seedling was 9.9903 x 10-3, 8.4054 x 10-3 and 4.34 respectively. In oxyfluorfen the percentage of DNA decrease from 5.9263 x 10-3 to 4.9886 x 10-3 at 1000 to 8000 ppm, respectively. The percentage of RNA was decrease from 7.4577 x 10-3 to 6.6381 x 10-3 at 1000 to 8000 ppm, respectively. The decrease in protein contents of seedling was from 3.51 to 2.97 at 1000 to 8000 ppm of oxyfluorten, respectively.
