N-mineralization and nitrification rates were studied, during May 1996 to June 1997, at six sites in Vindhyan region (four forest and two savanna sites) differing in terms of dominant vegetation, nutrient status, topography and soil moisture regime. During an annual cycle the maximum N-mineralization and nitrification rates were recorded in rainy season and minimum in summer season in all study sites. The annual N-mineralization and nitrification rates were highest at Hathinala forest moist site having maximum moisture content, organic-C, N and water holding capacity of soil than other study sites. N-mineralization and nitrification rates differ significantly across the sites and seasons. These rates were significantly correlated with soil moisture and mineral-N contents. The result suggested that variations in rates of N-mineralization and nitrification in the studied dry tropical ecosystems are related to differences in soil moisture content, nutrient status and vegetational cover in combination with other environmental factors.

In pot culture pre-inoculation spraying of P. fluorescens (10⁹ cfu/ml) and Cladosporium spp. (5.5 x 10⁵ coindia/ml) recorded the maximum disease reduction of both sheath rot and bacterial blight diseases. Fusarium sp. exhibited the least antagonistic activity against sheath rot and bacterial blight pathogens both in vitro and on rice plants in rot culture.

Leaf epidermal morphology of the five species of Hyptis (Labiatae) in West Africa has been studied using Light and Scanning Electron Microscopy Epidermal cells are irregular with undulate or wavy anticlinal walls or rarely polygonal with straight to curved anticlinal walls. In H. pectinala and H. lanceolata, the adaxial epidermal cells are cither irregular or polygonal, an observation which may be accounted for by eco-geographical differences. The periclinal walls consist of irregular ridges and cuticular folds on both abaxial and adaxial surfaces. The adaxial epidermal cells are generally larger than those on the abaxial surface. All taxa have diacytic stomata and are amphistomatic with more stomata on the abaxial surfaces. Stomata may be slightly raised, level with the surface or slightly sunken. The stomata are characterised by the presence of pronounced, overarching cuticular rims. Trichomes are multicellular or rarely unicelular, uniseriate, non-glandular or glandular, unbranched and thin walled. They are usually densely or rarely sparsely distributed on both surfaces of the leaves, and are covered with numerous tubercules. Trichomes vary in size and form even on the same epidermal surface of every taxon. The glands are usually globose in shape. Some characters which are of taxonomic value include the adaxial epidermal cell shape, anticlinal wall pattern, size of stomata epidermal cell and trichome type. A key is presented for the identification of the species.

Seed germination of two endangered orchids, Coelogyne ovalis and C. nitida was tried on four different culture media. The best germination was observed on Knudson C medium for both C. ovalis (87.74%) and C. nitida (67.82%). Protocorm volume of C. ovalis was better on Murashige and Skoog medium (0.021mm ) and for C. nitida the protocorms were larger on Knudson C medium (0.109mm³). Plantlets were hardened in the potting mixture containing charcoal and brick pieces (1:2) with 61% and 75% survival for C. ovalis and C. nitida respectively. This has made it possible to have large scale regeneration of the two orchids through seed germination without a requirement of symbiosis.

Liverworts like Asterella sps. Cyathodium sps, Targioma sps. and Plagiochasma sps. are analyzed for the ecological parameters like temperature, humidity, light intensity as well as pH and moisture. It is found that these microclimatic factors affect the growth of liverworts in different habitats. Natural habitat shows healthy and vigorous growth of these liverworts, while public and Traffic areas shows reduced growth with reduction in sizes, showing different pattern for the Koyana and Panhala. Ecological conditions of Koyana are found to be more favorable for the growth of Asterella sps. and Targioma sps. while Cyathodium sps. and Plagiochasma sps. from Panhala shows healthy and vigorous growth than Koyana. Variations in the moisture content, pH, temperature light intensity is observed according to the varied habitats. It is predicted that low light intensity, low temperature, high moisture content and slight alkaline pH are the favorable microclimatic conditions for the growth of liverworts.

Photosynthetic pigments were analyzed from Cyathodium tuberosum kash, a liverwort, which is found both in Koyana and Panhala regions. Higher values in Panhala Natural site than Koyana indicating more favorable conditions for the growth of Cyathodium tberosum kash. While lower values in Public areas and Traffic areas of Panhala than Koyana shows these sites more affected than Koyana. It was observed that higher values of total chlorophyll and chlorophyll carotenoids ratio, while lower chlorophyll a/b ratio are found in Natural site of Koyana and Panhala, but are more significant in Panhala than Koyana regions The lower values of chlorophyll, chlorophyll: carotenoid ratio and higher values of chlorophyll a/b in Public areas and Traffic areas, indicates photosynthetic pigments may get affected by various factors as light intensity, varied habitats and the age factor.

A study was conducted to standardize the method for mechanical tenderization of thin buffalo tripe. Thin buffalo tripe pieces were subjected to mechanical blade tenderization (0, 2.4 and 6 times). Physico - chemical parameters like pH, water holding capacity, cooking loss and drip loss of blade tenderized thin buffalo tripe samples were found to be increased with increasing number of passes through blade tenderizer with highest value recorded for 6 times blade tenderized samples. However, significantly reverse trend was observed for shear force value and fragmentation index. Physico-chemical parameters of 6 times blade tenderized thin buffalo tripe sample was comparable with 4 times blade tenderized samples. Four times blade tenderized thin buffalo tripe products were rated better for appearance, flavour and overall palatability scores than 6 times blade tenderized thin buffalo tripe products. Sensory scores for juiciness and tenderness between 4 and 6 times blade tenderized thin buffalo tripe products did not differ significantly. Thus, from these results, 4 times blade tenderization was found to be optimum for tenderization of thin buffalo tripe pieces and preparation of products.

Distribution and status of Haloxylon persicum Bunge (`Ghada') have been evaluated for the Arabian Peninsula. Analysis of the data using IUCN guidelines showed that the taxon qualifies for the IUCN status `lower risk' but `conservation dependent'. Its geographical distribution is from nearer or above the Tropic of Cancer, up to 50° N latitude. Phenological studies of the natural populations revealed vernal and aestival flowering. Vernal flowers produced viable seeds but aestival flowers were mostly male or very rarely polygamous. Seed germination studies were conducted to probe in to the poor regeneration in natural populations. Results indicated that deep burial of seed and the non-availability of adequate moisture in the germination medium are the main limiting factors for the population expansion. Ghada is a C₄ plant showing unusual behaviour of producing C₃ seedlings. These C₃ seedlings produced during winter help the taxon to perpetuate, even in adverse conditions of the desert.

The new species T. breviciliata is closely related to T. brevicapillum Pinto & Platner by having its male antennae with flagellum relatively short and stout, about four times as long as wide; bearing small and thick hairs with blunt tips; male genitalia with chelate structures situated just behind the tips of gonoforceps; but the former can easily be distinguished from the latter by having male genitalia with the prominent DEG, having posterior extremity with an spatula shaped terminal lobe; male antennae with longest flagellar seta slightly longer than the maximum flagellar width; female antennae with club about two and a half times as long as wide. Ovipositor about as long as hind tibia.

Throuogh survey for medicinal plants was conducted at 15 study sites covering the entire district. Medicinal plants of The district were available in varying forms ranging from thickest bush to food plants with medicinal value. Altogether 160 medicinal plants species under 151 genera and 82 families were collected. Amongst the medicinal plants collected, species Melanorrhoea usitata was found only in this district out of the four valley districts of Manipur and species Bauhinia purpuria; Butea monosperma (Lam.); Celtis timorensis', Goniothalamus sesquipedalis were thinly distributed.

A preliminary screening of 8 pteridophytes was carried out for their antibacterial activity. Majority of these plants are mentioned-in the traditional systems of medicine as sources of aseptic agents. All of them exhibited more or less antibacterial activity, out of which both crude and acetone extracts of Adiantum latifolium exhibited good activities by the disc diffusion technique. The crude extract was found to be more active than acetone extract.

Oral administration of the alcoholic extract of leaves of Malvaviscus conzzattii at a dose of 25 mg/ 100g body weight for 30 days and 60 days i.e. 30 days on dose diet and 30 days on normal diet (to test the reversibility of the extract) caused no change in the levels of protein, cholesterol alkaline phosphatase, acid Phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase of epididymal serum. But there was a significant increase in the level of sugar. The variation in the sugar metabolism caused by the extract may be counteracted as a potent antifertility agent.

The rural community of this region uses some of the plants as medicine for the treatment of human ailments. In a floristic survey 25 ethnomedicinal plant species belonging to 19 families were recorded from this region. These medicinal plants are listed in alphabetically order of Latin names, local name alongwith family and part used as medicine.

Plant leaves were examined for bacteria capable of producing polysaccharide extra-eel lularly. A bacterium identified as belonging to genus Bacillus efficiently produced polysaccharide. Polysaccharide productivity was optimal in medium which contained peptone, yeast extract and NaCI. The physiological and gelling properties of partially purified exopolysaccharide were similar to those of levan gum. The sugar constituent of this exopolysaccharide was fructose.

Evaluated the population growth responses of three species of Brachionus (B. angularis, B. havanaensis and B. rubens on Chlorella vulgaris at three densities (0.0625x10⁶, 0.125x 10⁶ and 0.25x 10⁶ cells mL^-1) offered in three forms (live, frozen and heat-killed). When raised on live Chlorella, increase in algal concentration resulted in increased population abundances of all the three brachionid rotifers. For B. angularis and B. rubens at any given food density live Chlorella resulted in higher population densities than when fed in frozen or heat-killed form. However, for B. hallanaensis, heat-killed alga supported higher population densities than on live or frozen Chlorella. B. havanaensis failed to grow on frozen alga regardless of the food density, while the other two rotifers showed positive growth, especially under higher diet levels. The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.45±0.03 to - 0.58±0.01 per day, depending on the brachionid species, algal density and the diet form. Statistically, the r of B. angularis ancI B. havanaensis was significantly (p<60>0.05) affected by algal form and the density as well as their interaction. However, the r of B. rubens was not significantly affected by the algal form (p<62>0.05), although algal concentration and its interaction with diet type were significant (p<60>0.001). Thus, this study showed that the response of tested species of Brachionus varied depending not only on the form in which Chlorella was offered but also on its concentration

Essential oils of citronella cv. Bio-13 produced through crop: weed mixed distillations had higher concentrations of linalool, citronellol and geraniol in comparison to the oil produced from distillation of pure crop biomass. Aromatic oils of citronella cv. Java-II contained higher percentªages of linalool, citronellal, geraniol and lower concentrations of citronellyl acetate and elemol in crop: weed combined distillation treatments than in pure crop biomass distillation treatment. Co-distillation of weed biomass with the biomass of lemongrass cultivars Cauvery and Pragati produced oils with greater concentrations of citral, geraniol and geranyl acetate in comparison with the oils produced through distillation of biomass of Cauvery and Pragati. Crop: weed mixed distillations reduced the concentrations of myrcene, linalool and geranyl acetate and increased geraniol percentage in palmarosa oil. In lemon-scented gum, 15% and 30% admixture of weed species decreased the citronellal percentage and increased the concentration of isopulegol in the oil compared to pure crop biomass distilled oil. Essential oils of basil produced through crop: weed combined distillations possessed lower concentration of linalool and higher content of methyl cinnamate in comparison to the oil produced from pure crop biomass. Admixture of weeds with crop biomass at the time of distillation imparted off-odours to the volatile oils of all the five aromatic crops and altered the chemical profiles of their essential oils.

The total protein profile and the isozyme banding patterns (acid phosphatase, esterase and peroxidase) of the three species of Pteris (P. ensiformis, P. multiaurita and P. multifida) were evaluated by electrophoresis to study the interspecific variation and phylogenetic relationship. Similarities in total protein and isoenzyme banding patterns were detected for morphologically distinct species. Cluster and pairing affinity or similarity index analysis data showed P. ensiformis and P. multifida are most closely related while P. ensiformis and P. multiaurita are most distantly related.
