Tribal Kanikkars in Kanyakumari district consume the rhizome of Maranta arundinacea L. The information on the chemical analysis, nutritional attributes and the anti-nutritional properties of the rhizome of Maranta arundinacea L. are not readily available. The proximate composition, total protein, starch, sugars, in-vitro starch digestibility, in-vitro protein digestibility and certain anti-nutritional properties of the rhizome of Maranta arundinacea L. were analysed. The crude protein content was 13.13%, crude lipid 1.12%, crude fibre 3.48% and ash 2.10%. The rhizome was found to be a rich source of total starch. The in-vitro protein digestibility and in-vitro starch digestibility of the rhizome were 4.38% units and 6.11 units respectively. The anti-nutritional principles like total free phenolics, tannins, hydrogen cyanide, total oxalate, amylase inhibitor activity and trypsin inhibitor activity were also analysed.

The ethanol extracts of Azima tetracantha, Pongamia glabra and Piper betle (leaves) had antifungal activity against both the fungi. The percent inhibition of both the fungi were observed and the results are discussed.

In the east Himalayan moist temperate forests of Darjeeling (1800-3200 m), life form studies are made as because it is believed that adaptations of plants to the climate are reflected in the biological spectrum. The recorded 176 species are in the following proportions : phanerophyte (P) - 22.15%; chainaephyte (Ch) - 8.54%; hemicryptophyte (H) -24.99%; geophyte (G) - 5.68% and therophyte (Th) - 38.64%. The flora is, therefore, 'therophytic', even though the climate has always been identified as 'temperate'. This result is, therefore, unlike of typical temperate vegetation where hemicryptophytes are supposed to be in preponderance. It is argued here that the region is located in a subtropical belt and the 'apparent temperate' climate is actually due to high elevations. The distinctly seasonal climate is strongly influenced by monsoon and differ from the characteristic conditions of temperate Europe and America. It should more appropriately be termed as Himalayan temperate climate. Further discussions are also made with respect to the biological spectra of other regions of the Himalayan range.

N. saliva is a good material for cytological studies and can be used as a model plant in cytogenetical researchers. The review documents cytological, cytogenetical and genetical aspects of N, saliva with the objective to generate interest amongst researchers in this field so that the species may further be explored cytogenetically for development of new genotypes relating to its improvement.

The study brings out leaf epidermal morphology and stomatogenesis in 13 species belonging to 5 genera of Melastomataceae and their application in taxonomy of this family. Cuticular striations arise generally from the outer wall of guards cells or from hair bases. However, discontinuous, short cuticular striations arise from the centre of adaxial cells in Osbeckia aspera, O. virgata and Heeria elegans. The features of non-costal cells are discussed in the light of taxonomy of individual species. Of the five types of hairs recorded, the multi-seriate macroform non-glandular conical hairs with or without foot extension and biseriate glandular clavate hairs are characteristically present in this family. Of the two, the former one differs in different species in its morphology, hence, useful in taxonomy of individual species. Of all the species studied, long and very long multiseriate macroform glandular cuneate hairs occur only in Sonerila. spp. Of seven stomatal types, viz, dia-, para-, aniso-, tetra-, desmo-, anomo- and actinocytic types, desmocytic stomata are found only in Sonerila. spp. The stomata of earlier origin always develop perigenously. The stomata of later origin develop perigenously, mesogenously or mesoperigenously in different genera. The para-mesoperigenous stomatal development is reported for the first time in Memecylon. It is suggested that the constancy of the number of cutting faces of meristemoid is genus specific and nature of placement of wall cutting of meristemoid or gmc leading to the differences in the frequency of different stomatal types in various species of a genus is species specific. The present study supports the elevation of Memecyloideae to a distinct family Memecylaceae and suggests the remoyal of Sonerila from the tribe Oxysporeae to a distinct tribe Sonerileae considering its distinctness from other members of tribe Oxysporeae.

Flowers of Seabuckthorn (Hippophae L.) were unisexual, minute, yellowish brown to yellowish green in colour, produced in large numbers. Inflorescence was solitary or sometimes in racemes. Length and width of male flower were 3.04± 0.21 and 2.61± 0.08 respectively. Length and width of female flower were 3.85± 0.34 and 1.31± 0.02 respectively. Growth pattern of length and width in male flower is almost parallel but in female flower length increases exponentially during later growth period. Male flower blossoms one week before female flowers. Best pollination time was during last week of May. Flowers arise before the emergence of leaves i.e. reproductive organs borne before vegetative organs to complete the life cycle within an available limited period. Floral diagram and floral formulae were described on the basis of morphology and anatomy of flower.

Most of the species of Habenaria grandifloriformis, 2n = 22, Habenaria longicarniculata 2n = 20 and Habenaria viridiflora 2n = 22. Chromosome should have been originated by aneuploidy. The study of karyotype analyses shows that each and every species has a distinct karyotype. Therefore, karyotype alterations of chromosomes may have also play important role in speciation along with aneuploidy.

Most of the species of Anoectochilus elatus having 2n=10 and Bulbophyllum fischeri 2n=18, chromosome should have been originated by aneuploidy. The study of karyotype analyses shows that each and very species has a distinct karyotype. Therefore, karyotype alterations of chromosomes may have also play important role in speciation along with aneuploidy.

Three different species of Trichoderma i.e. Trichodermn viride, I', virens and T. liarziainuii were tested against the Fusariuan moiiioniliforme var. snbgliitiimns (fins). The three bioagents varied in their efficacy against F. moniliforme var. siibgliithinns isolates. In general, all the three bioagents were effective in checking the growth of all evaluated isolates of fusaria. However, out of the three bioagents tried against F. moniliforme var. snbglutiiwns, best result was obtained with 7. harzinnum followed by T. virens and T. viride. Results clearly show that the per cent inhibition of fusariae isolates by T. harziainuii was significantly superior to T. viride for all the isolates except F18. It was also observed that T. harzianum was significantly superior to T. virens isolates F₁, F₄ and F₁₁. When T. virens and T. viride were compared, it was found that T. virens was significantly superior to T. viride for F₁ and F₁₀ isolates.

Investigations were carried out on the total aqueous extracts (TAB) of thirty plants; belonging to the family Solanaceae were evaluated for their stupefying ability against common freshwater fish: Lebistus reticulatus (Peters) by a static bioassay method. The order of high ichthyatoxicity were found in TAE of plants viz., Cestrum nocturnum Linn, Cestrum diurnum Linn, Datura alba Linn, Nicotiana tabacum Linn, Datura metal Linn, Solanum nigrum Linn, Withania somnifera Dunal, Solanum xanthocarpum, S. & W., Capsicum annum Linn, Hyoseyamus nigar Linn, Solanum dulcamera Linn, Atropa belladonna Linn, Datura ferox Linn, and Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Linn. Whereas other plants have either moderate or less potentiality. This supports the view that the active compounds present in plants are water-soluble and proved their utility to catch fishes. Collection stage of the flowers of feverfew had a significant effect on the essential oil content and compositions. The highest mean of essential oil content (0.55%) was extracted from the fruits which collected at fruit set stage, while the lowest mean essential oil of flowers (0.35%) was obtained from the flowers which collected at budding step. The results of GC and GC/MS analysis showed that 21,19 and 21 compositions identified from budding, full flowering and fruit set stages respectively. The essential oil compositions of various harvest times of feverfew flowers are different, the fluctuations of amount of the main components the oil such as camphor, chrynsanthenyl acetae, camphene and α-pinene is not too high.

Enumerates the occurrence of 32 species belonging to 20 genera and 16 families of lichens in Achanakmar wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is dominated by crustose lichens. Collema ryssoleum (Tuck.) a. Schneider and Pyxine cocoes (Swartz) Nyl. were the only two foliose lichens in the area, while fruticose lichens are completely absent. The lichens of the Sanctuary were mostly bark inhabiting represented by 20 species, followed by seven rock inhabiting species. Fellhanera semecarpi (Vainio) Vezda is the only leaf inhabiting lichen collected from the Sanctuary. Cryptothecia lunulata (Zahlbr.) Makh. & Patw., Letrouitia transgressa (Malme) Haf. & Bellem and Pyxine cocoes (Swartz) Nyl. are the most common lichens of the Sanctuary. Beside low altitude, the dry and hot climatic conditions in the deciduous forest are the main reasons for the poor growth of the lichens in the area. The study is the first enumeration of lichens from Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary. All the species enumerated in the study are new to the lichen flora of the State. The available records of the lichens will pay a vital role in conducting future biomonitoring studies in the area.

Beside this, the reasons of such high percentage of endemism and their types are also discussed in the light of present knowledge. Lists of families containing highest number of endemic genera and their species confined to the India are provided to make the comparison of the present status of the endemic genera of India.
