In the observation some commonly used fungicides for foliar spray and seed treatment like Feram, Zirnam, Captan, Nabam and Thiram were evaluated against Trichoderma viride. Inhibitory effect of the tested fungicides showed decreasing trend from 5 to 20 days in treatments. Maximum inhibition was recorded with Feram 0.80 per cent concentration, followed by Zirnam at 0.4 per cent concentration in all incubation periods. Treatments of Zirnam at 0.1 per cent Captan at 0.1 per cent, Nabam at 0.1 per cent and Thiram at 0.1 per cent at all the incubation period observed no inhibition. The per cent inhibition of the antagonistic fungus decreased with low in concentration and increase in incubation period. Low concentration of all tested fungicides can be used for foliar spray and seed treatment to reduce the seed borne inoculum, soil borne inoculum and to reduce the early pest incidence in integrated pest management.

Lablab purpureus, is an important crop plant, screened for drought tolerance under water stress on the basis of activities of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. It was observed that the WS₄ - 20% and WS₃ - 40% were drought tolerant as compared to other treatments and control plants. Among the various treatments, WS₂ - 60% and WS₁ - 80% were found to be susceptible to water stress at reproductive stage. This study indicated that enzymes like peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase may serve as the indicators of water stress.

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the compatibility and toxicity of agrochemicals on the growth of MCU-7 cotton inoculated with Glomus fasciculatum. The insecticides (monocrotophos, endosulfan and phosphamidan) were applied at different concentration viz., 100%, 115% and 130% were studied. All the three insecticides monocrotophos, endosulfan and phosphamidan significantly reduced the AMF spore population, root colonization, plant dry weight and plant phosphorus content with higher doses of spraying (115 and 130%). However, the degree of inhibition varied with both the type and level of concentration of insecticides. But there was no significant differences was noticed between monocrotophos 100 per cent RD and control (unsprayed) and the results indicated that the foliar application of monocrotophos at RD is safer to mycorrhizal development than the other insecticides.

Extensive irrigation in North-West Rajasthan over the last 70 years or so has brought remarkable changes in the composition of the original germplasm, both by the way of introduction of extra limital germplasm as well as elimination of many of the original germplasm. 153 angiosperm species, which originally belonged to the Indian Desert, have been eliminated from the irrigated regions, obviously as a result of irrigation and extensive cultivation (Singh et al, 2000). A list of germplasm, especially those reported from North-West Rajasthan and a few endemic to desert, which have disappeared from irrigated regions of the Indian Desert, is given. As the Indira Gandhi Canal is schedule to irrigate the entire Indian Desert right up to Jaisalmer, the immediate need to conserve these germplasm is suggested.

Leaf oil volatiles from Z. monogynum were identified by GC and GC-MS. Twelve constituents (99.9% of total) were found in sample 1 with the predominance of citronellal (57.1%), limonene (13.8%), citronellyl acetate (13.1%) and citronellol (6.2%). Fourteen compounds (99.0% of total) were identified in the sample 2 where 2-undecanone (70.2%) and citronellal (22.5%) were the principal components. The essential oil scent for both samples is quite different. Based on the results we think that there are two chemotypes for the species Z. monogynum.

Virulence of twenty-five isolates of entonionathogenic fungi consisting of ten belonging to Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., seven to Verticilliuin lecanii (Zimmerman), five to Metarhiziiitn anisopliae (Metschinikoff) Sorokiu, two to Noinuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson and one to Paecilomyces fumosoroseim (Wize) Brown and Smith originating from a wide range of insect species was investigated in laboratory bioassays on cabbage aphid, Hrcvicoryne braxsicae (Linnaeus) at different regimes of temperature (20, 25 and 30°) and relative humidity (75, 85, 90 and 95 %). All fungal isolates except N. rileyi isolates were pathogenic to the aphid, hut in varying degrees. Among three levels of temperature tested, aphid mortality was significantly higher at 25° than 20 and 30 °. Aphid mortality decreased with decreasing relative humidity. Among all isolates in all combinations of temperature and relative humidity, four isolates of V. lecanii, V.l-l, V.l-2, V.1-6, and V.1-7 showed higher virulence to B. brassicae. In multiple dose bioassays, lowest LT₅₀ was obtained from V.1-7 isolate. The highest virulence of V.1-7 isolate of V. lecanii to B. brassicae suggests that the isolate would be a potential candidate as a microbial control agent for the cabbage aphid.

Volatiles of Ageratum conyzoides collected at the municipality of Santarem Novo (Samples A, B and C), and Belem (Sample D), State of Para (North of Brazil), were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. The inflorescence, leaf, stem and root oils of the Sample A were dominated by precocene I (inflorescence: 55.5%, leaf: 69.6%, stem: 71.6%, root: 67.4%), followed by β-caryophyllene (inflorescence: 19.4%, leaf: 14.4%, stem: 12.8%, root: 15.3%). The oils from the whole plant of the Samples B, C and D were rich in α-pinene (Sample B = 23.4%, SampleC= 14.4% and Sample D= 12.0%), and germacrene D (Sample B = 13.2%, SampleC= 15.3%and Sample D = 16.1 %). The obtained data showed the occurrence at least two chemotypes of A. conyzoides in Para: the type rich in precocene I, comparable to the oils from Cameroon, Ghana and Burkina Faso, and Southeast of Brazil, and the type rich in α-pinene/germacrene D.

Floral biology of Cymbopogon flexuosus (Nees ex Steud.) Wats. SD-68 strain and BLI-1 strain were studied. A symmetry of anther, anther dehiscence and other floral characters between the two strains were observed under the climatic conditions of Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. A comparison between the two strains in the profuse flowering stage from January to March during the year 1999-2000 has been made and presented.

As regards the form of hypocotyl of B. acuminata L., it is terete, becoming tetrangular and grooved near the foliar cotyledons.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to reveal the amount of ascorbic acid present in some fruits and vegetables. The effect of temperature on ascorbic acid was also estimated by using cooked vegetables.

Intensive field study on grasses of Delhi region over a period of one year resulted in collection of 128 species (excluding bamboos) belonging to 70 genera, of which 24 species, 1 subspecies and 2 varieties belonging to 21 genera form new records for the region and are reported in the present paper. The study revealed that tremendous changes have occurred in the floral composition of Delhi since the publication Maheshwari's (1963) Flora of Delhi. As such, intensive and extensive botanical explorations are needed for documentation of floral wealth of nation's capital.

The investigation in okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] was carried out in R.B.D. with three replications. Correlation coefficients between parental order of dominance and parental measurement were found to be negative for height of plant, number of branches per plant and width of fruits per plant in both F₁ and F₂ generations indicating that dominant genes governed the expression of these characters. The positive and significant values observed for days to flowering, length of fruit, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant in F₁ and F₂ generations and number of nodes per plant in F₂ population suggested that these characters were governed by recessive genes. Correlation coefficients were estimated among parents, F₁ hybrids and F₂ population separately at genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients. The correlation coefficients were consistently significant and positive in all the three population between fruit yield per plant and number of fruits per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. The consistency was also observed in F₁ and F₂ generations between fruit yield per plant and plant height at both genotypic and phenotypic levels. Fruit yield per plant showed significant and positive correlation between length of fruit and width of fruit at genotypic level in both F₁ and F₂ generations.

Allelopathic effects of aquous extracts of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 g/L dry Scot pine (pinus sylvestris) leaves on seed germination and seedling growth of 4 turf grass varieties were investigated. All the concentration extracts tested had significantly inhibitory effects on seed germination percentage of Lolium perenne var. Ovation, Festuca rubra rubra var. Franklin, Festuca rubra commutata var. Koket and Festuca ovina var. crystal compared with the control. This inhibition effect increased with increasing Scot pine extract concentration. The treatments of 20, 30, 40 and 50 g/L concentration on hard fescue showed no germination. However, 10 g/L treatment of leaf extracts promoted root elongation on perennial ryegrass and shoot elongation on strong creeping red fescue, compared with the control. The average time of germination (ATG) and the time to 50 % of the final germination (GT₅₀) were significantly reduced by the extracts in comparison with the distilled water control.

Adhatoda vasica (AV) nees of the Acanthaceae family is a well know plant drug in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Several tribal populations in chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh use leaves of the plant in cold, cough and asthama. In the present study an attempt was made to explore the immunomodulatory potential of AV in male Swiss albino mice. Effect of alcoholic extract of AV leaf (500 mg/kg, p.o) on haematological profile, splenic lymphocytes and peritoneal macrophages was studied 5, 10, 15 and 20 days after treatment. Its effect on macrophage phagocytic index, E. coli induced abdominal peritonitis and SRBC induced delayed type hypersensitivity was also evaluated. AV showed significant increase in total WBC, blood lymphocytes, splenic lymphocytes and peritoneal macrophages. It also showed significant protection against E. coli induced abdominal peritonitis. AV leaf extract may have significant immunoptentiating and immunoprophylactic activity.

Several plants species reported in folk and traditional system of medicine are therapeutic and possessed antimicrobial properties. Leaves of the 9 plants, which are usually used in worshiping the God, were used in the study. It is observed that the aqueous extracts of Ocimum sanctum (Linn) leaves were more efficient than extracts in organic solvents. Aqueous extracts of Mnngifera indica (Linn) leaves were most efficient followed by methanol, acetone, ethanol, ether extracts while benzene, and xylene extracts were not antibacterial against the tested organisms. Extracts of Aegle marmelos (L.) leaves showed sensitivity against all the pathogens tested. The methanol extract of Ficus racemosa leaves were more antibacterial than aqueous, ethanol, benzene and acetone extracts. Xylene, ethanol and aqueous extracts of Custard apple (Annona squamosa) were highly antibacterial against all tested bacterial pathogens and least sensitive to extracts of methanol, acetone, benzene, and ether. Thus these herbal products with antibacterial activity can be used as a good alternative to antibiotics to combat the diseases.

The production of abnormal seedlings in Gnetum ula during the germination period using sand as the medium is reported. 5-10% of seeds developed abnormal seedlings. Most of the seedlings produced multiple root and single shoot and these seedlings grew very well in green house conditions (26 ñ 2° C). The healthy seedlings were transferred to polyethylene bags containing sand: soil: farmyard manure 1:2:1 ratio. The well developed seeds were established in the field.

Along with the above members Scytonema zelleriamum belonging the order Cytonematales was also associated.

Traditionally grown shrubland species but not conventionally cultivated were studied for three years, although meagre research work is noticed when literature survey is scanned. Traditionally grown plants like Sesbania sesban, Leuceana leucocephala, Sesbania grandiflora, Moringa oleifera and Gliricidia maculata to certain extent were useful. It is however, observed that these traditionally grown plants were not viewed from different angle for biomass productivity. They were either ignored or were kept in limited use for their production potential. The recognition of such plants for high biomass production and nutrients rich status was taken into consideration with a view that they can make substantial contribution towards the utilization of wasteland for nutrients rich fodder. The studies on these lines were concentrated in five shrubland species and four grasses. Before recommending any shrub land plant for nutrient rich biomass production. A new approach was adopted towards these plants by training, pruning and converting the tree species into a browse and then growing under different environment of same species of tree environment along with grass as ground cover.
