Cyclosis is a ubiquitous phenomenon in plant cells and plays an important role in transporting organdies within a cell, cell development and differentiation. The study examines the role of nitric oxide (NO), which influences some of the phenomena where cyclosis is known to play a role. Viagra is involved in NO production in plants. Bicarbonate is known to be a key player in photosynthetic electron transport. Effects of Viagra and bicarbonate on eyclosis were examined in the presence of various chemicals that influence calcium-related physiological effects. Viagra can stimulate or inhibit eyclosis depending on the concentration used. Both bicarbonate and Viagra behave similarly in stimulation and inhibition of diverse but evolutionar-ily linked processes, It is hypothesized that eyclosis evolved for the regulation of transpiration. Elodea being an aquatic plant has no stomata, but eyclosis, the physiological basis for the regulation of transpiration still persists as an evolutionary relict. Both calcium and bicarbonate were found to influence eyclosis positively, while lanthanum sulphate, a calcium channel blocker, had a negative effect. However, its effect was dependent on concentration, with complete blockage at 10 mM concentration. By contrast, the effect of bicarbonate was neutralized by the presence of formate, indicating a competition between the two for the same site. Cyclosis is stimulated by trifluoperazine, an antagonist of calmodulin. Another chemical, aceto-zolamide, an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase which generates bicarbonate inhibits eyclosis. This supports the positive influence of bicarbonate on cyclosis. Our results point to inhibition of cyclosis by formate possibly by competing with bicarbonate for a binding site. The nature of the binding site is presently unclear. Future experiments will unravel the role of Viagra in cyclosis.

The relative 2C genome size (in pg), ploidy level (X) and total number of base pair (in Mbp) of ten threatened, rare and endangered Indian Rhododendron species of Darjeeling Hills (eastern Himalaya) were determined by using flow cytometer. Out of the 10 species, 9 were diploid and their genome sizes (2C) ranged from 1.30 to 1.51 pg. But in one species, i.e., R. niveum, the value of genome size was significantly high, i.e., 4.27 pg, appeared to be a natural hexaploid (6X). The cytometric genomic data indicating the hexaploid nature of R. niveum can be correlated with some phenotypic characters, specifically the size of I leaf, size of flower and number of flower in truss. The reported phenotypic character of diploid species of R. niveum reveals that leaf size varies from 9-12 cm in length and 3.5-5.5 cm in breadth, individual flower size varies from 2-2.5 cm in length and 2-2.5 cm in diameter and number of flower per truss is 18-23 in diploid species. However, the findings on the same phenotypic characters of hexaploid R. niveum in the present study showed some differences from the diploid one. The leaf size of hexaploid R. niveum varies from 15-20 cm in length and 5-7 cm in breadth, individual flower size varies from 3.5-4 cm in length and 3.5 cm in diameter and number of flower per truss is 25-30. Therefore, these differences in floral traits and leaf size may be direct result of polyploidization itself. Thus, the morphological traits and the genomic information of Rhododendron species may serve as a valuable database for Indian Rhododendron breeders.

Kigelia pinnata is a semi deciduous fast growing tree species producing two to three flushes of shoots annually. Pattern of lignification in differentiating xylem elements of young shoots has been studied by histological and histochemical methods. The walls of cambial zone cells and the xylem derivatives undergoing expansion are rich with pectic polysaccharides. Lignin is heterogeneously distributed in the walls of xylem elements. The initiation, completion and intensity of lignin deposition vary in the walls of different xylem elements undergoing differentiation. First stage of lignification of cell walls often occurs at (he cell corner middle lamella. Sequential deposition of lignin and occurrence of peroxidase activity in the cell wall areas where pectin was deposited indicates a close relationship between pectin and lignin.

Aerobiological investigations were carried out over the bajra (Pennisetum typhoids stapf.) fields at Ahmedpur for two kharifseasons of year 2005 and 2006.Air sampling was carried out by using Tilak air sampler. Different types of hyphal fragments like short, long branched, un branched, coloured, hyaline were encountered throughout the period of investigations in both the seasons. Their percentage contribution to the total airspora was 4.11% and 2.14% in first and second seasons, respectively. Their maximum concentration in first and second kharif seasons was recorded as 12404/m3 and 11438/m3 of air in the months of September 2005 and August 2006, respectively. During the present study, insect scales, insect wings, insect skeleton, insect mouth parts and complete insects were trapped and all of them were considered under separate group "insect scales". The percentage contribution of insect parts to the total airspora was 3.01% and 2.92% in first and second seasons, respectively. Their maximum concentration (9702/m3 and 16898/m3 of air) was recorded in the months of September 2005 and August 2006, respectively.

A good number of herbal remedies have stood the test of time, particularly for the treatment of allergic, metabolic and degenerative diseases associated with aging. Traditional medicinal plants in various countries, especially in India have been used for various aliments such as inflammation and for immunopotentiation. In the present study, two plants such as Clerodendrum sermtum, Mollugo cerviana were screened for analgesic and anti inflammatory property using tail flicking and paw oedema assay. The findings revealed that better activity was noticed in C.serratum at 50 |ag concentration. More phytochemical compounds were also detected in C.serratum Even though microgram of the plant extract was used in the present study; further isolation, purification and characterisation of the drug using chromatographic techniques may help us to formulate nanograms of bioactive principle for prophylaxis.

Floristic inventory and diversity studies are conducted using various sampling methods. The present study compared floristic diversity of an evergreen forest of Kolli Hill based on three sampling methods, viz. (a) ad hoc (AH) vegetation survey, (b) stratified random plot (SRP) and (c) bigger plot (BP). The evergreen forest area (2889.5 ha) was classified with IRS 1D LISS III satellite data and the evergreen area belonging to different reserve forests were subset. Floristic inventory with SRP was carried out on 0.1% of total evergreen area using 20 X 20 m plot. An earlier study done on the same locality was considered as the BP. The AH, SRP and BP recorded, 121, 91 and 78 tree species respectively. The mean tree densities were 547 and 478 trees ha-1 and the mean basal areas were 46.74 and 43.6 m2 ha~1 in SRP and BP respectively. All the diversity indices calculated based on SRP with 3 ha sampling area and BP with 8 ha sampling area varied considerably.

The biochemical composition and enzymatic changes were analyzed in the fruit of Morns alba at its five sequential developmental stages. A declining trend of chlorophylls and carotenoids occurs simultaneously with an increase in the anthocyanins content. As the Mulberry fruit proceeds towards ripening a concomitant sharp increase occurs in the quantity of sugars, but the amount of total starch, protein and ascorbic acid decreases. The changes in the activity of enzymes such as amylase, invertase, catalase and peroxidase involved in a number of catabolic and anabolic reactions indicate that these enzymes also have active role in the process of Mulberry fruit growth and ripening. The specific activity of invertase and cell wall degrading enzymes such as PG, celiulase and PME showed higher activity throughout the growth and ripening stages. The present study manifests that with rich source of sugars and antioxidants the fruit of Moms alba can be used as a natural food. Besides, since a significant amount of anthocyanins also found to get accumulated in the ripening Mulberry fruit, it may also be used as a natural food colorant. Due to significant medicinal and economic importance, Mulberry fruits are recommended for their commercial exploitation.

Ecological investigation covering pbyte-sociological'attributes of 123 winter weed species have been reported in the article from the tea fields of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam, Importance Value Index (IVI) of each species was calculated. Among the weed species, Axonopus compressus (38.986), Imperata cylindrica (26.353), Ageratum conyzoides (26.251), Cynodon dactylon (14.383), Oxalis corniculata (11.348) and Gnaphalium indicum (10.39), are identified as the most dominant species in the tea fields. The study showed variation in their IVI values in different study sites due to for change in the physicochemical properties of soil of the study sites. Although the physical properties of soils are almost similar in all the study sites, their nutrient contents show variations, which may be the prime cause of variation in the IVI values.

A field experiment WES conducted during rabi (winter) season. Five wheat cultivars (PBW-343, WH-542, PBW-502, PBW-509 and Raj-3765) sown on six dates of sowing starting from 31st October at weekly interval upto 5th December to find out suitable thermotolerance traits and genotypes. Amongst eleven traits recorded at different growth stages, largest variability was observed in crop growth rate (CGR), partitioning to spike, grain spike weight ratio (GSWR), spike growth duration (SGD), cumulative growing degree days (GDD) accumulated during vegetative and reproductive phenophases and grain yield at maturity. The highest grain yield was correlated with longer spike growth duration, partitioning higher crop growth rate and grain spike weight ratio at anthesis phase. The results revealed that cumulative growing degree-days (GDD) accumulated more during the reproductive phases as compared with the vegetative phases of wheat cultivars. The GDD is the effective selection criteria for screening thermotolerant lines of wheat.

Multiple shoots were induced from nodal explants of Siegesbeckia orientalis L. on Murashige and skoog's basal medium supplemented with Img/L Benzyl Amino Purine within 4 weeks of culture. These shoots were sub cultured for in vitro rooting with MS medium supplemented with different auxins at various concentrations and the best results were obtained on MS+1 mg/L Indole Butyric Acid. In vitro flowering was observed on a medium supplemented with 2 mg/L Benzyl Amino Purine within six weeks of culture. The plantlets were hardened in a 2:1 potting mixture of sand and soil and were established under greenhouse conditions. Hence, in vitro propagation protocol of siegsbeckia orientalis has been standardized.

The study aims at classifying tropical trees using Hyperion (EO-1) and SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper) algorithm. The study was conducted in the Shoolpaneshwar Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS), Narmada District, Gujarat, India. Hyperion data were obtained during October 2006 when the vegetation was lush green. Field survey was done coinciding with data acquisition time. The tree species identified for discrimination were Tectona grandis L., Dendrocalamm strictus Nees., Mangifera imlica L., Madhuca indica J. F. Gmel. and Ficus glom-erata Roxb. Hyperion data were preprocessed. End-member spectra for each species were selected and used as library spectra for the classification. SAM was performed for the entire spectrum, VIS-NIR region (1-90 bands), SWIR-I region (103-136 bands), SWIR-II region (159-195 bands), 1-10 MNF and 1-15 MNF bands. Overall accuracy assessment (OAA), kappa coefficient and user's and producer's accuracy were calculated. SAM classification with 196 bands (full-spectra) of Hyperion data gave 51% OAA for the five tropical trees selected. The obtained OAA was appropriate looking at the pattern of vegetal cover and also of the sensor used. Partition analysis of the spectrum indicated superiority of VIS-NIR region for classification. SWIR-I and II did not fare well because of the biophysical state of vegetal cover. SAM showed the highest accuracy (59.57%) for spectra of 1-10 MNF bands. Higher accuracy using MNF band combination indicated the potential of MNF transformation to increase classification accuracy of tropical trees by reducing data dimensionality. Our study indicates that homogeneity in the vegetal cover is a critical aspect for classification in the tropical areas. We conclude that SAM is an appropriate method for classifying Hyperion data of the tropics. With the reported densities for Tectona and Dendrocalamus, Hyperion is found to be an appropriate sensor for monitoring.

The reproductive biology of Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Del. subsp. indica Benth. (Mimosaceae) is detailed by floral biology, phenology, pollen biology, stigma receptivity, breeding system, composition and relative abundance of flower visitors, time spent at flowers by pollinators and resource allocation. The percentage of pollen viability varied significantly (P<0.05) from 50% to 75%. The morning samples collected between 10.00 and 11.00 hours had significantly better viability (75%) than the samples collected at 17.00 hour (50%). 8% sucrose supplemented with boric acid 1000 ppm and gibberellic acid 500 ppm was found to be an ideal medium for enhanced pollen germination and pollen tube growth. The viability of pollen stored at 0°C was highest in comparison to the pollen kept at room temperature and at 4°C. A total of 17 flower visitors recorded in the study sites. Oxyrchis torandus had spent maximum time on flowers. The construction of each flower costed 0.00416 g, of these 48% of total allocation spent by attractive yellow colored stamens. The seed cost recorded as 44% of the total pod cost, while remaining 56% allocated to pack the seeds as well as to organize for effective dispersal.

This review focuses on what has been learned about the evolution of photosynthesis in the past five years, and omits evolution of CO2 assimilation. Oxygenic photosynthesis (using both photosystems I and II) has evolved from anoxygenic photosynthesis. The latter occurs in different variants, using either a type 1 photosystem resembling photosystem I, or a type 2 photosystem resembling photosystem II. Opinions differ as to how two types of photosystem came to be combined in the same organism, whether by gene transfer between bacteria, by fusion of bacteria, or as a result of gene duplication and evolution within one kind of bacterium. There are also different opinions about when oxygenic photosynthesis arose, in conjunction with the Great Oxygenation Event, 2.3 billion years before the present, or more than a billion years before that. Cyanobacteria were the first organisms to carry out oxygenic photosynthesis. Some of them gave rise to chloroplasts, while others continued to evolve as independent organisms, and the review outlines both lines of evolution. At the end we consider the evolution of photosynthesis in relation to the evolution of our planet.

H. spicatum is an important Himalayan medicinal herb and the species needs immediate attention and priority for conservation due to over exploitation and increasing demand in herbal market. Keeping this in view, the present investigation was aimed to enhance the seed germination percentage of H. spicatum using hormones and trying various soil compositions under nursery conditions. Treatment of seeds by various concentrations of hormones and soil treatment (litter addition) improved germination as well as growth performance. These findings can be utilized for producing propagates of the species for domestication and cultivation to realize commercial requirements. The method would be an additional advantage over vegetative propagation by rhizomes.

Rattans of Peninsular India belong to only one genus namely Calamus and 21 species. Twenty species occurring in Western Ghats forests are reported here. The status of C. delessertianus and C. rheedei is uncertain while 15 species are endemic to Western Ghats. Among the five states falling within the Western Ghats, Karnataka has the maximum 13 Calamus species, of which 11 were endemic to the Western Ghats. Three species namely, C. lacciferus, C. lakshmanae and C. prasinus were restricted only to Karnataka region of the Western Ghats. Among the 13 species of Calamus occurring in Karnataka, 12 were found in Kodagu District. Studies were undertaken to determine the status of rattans in some cane-rich forests of Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts of Karnataka by belt transect method. The study has revealed that Sampaje, Karike and Makut in Kodagu District, Subramanya and Charmadi in Dakshina Kannada District and Anantavadi (Honnavar) in Uttara Kannada District were rich in some species of rattans including those endemic to the Western Ghats. The population of C. lakshmanae and C. prasinus (restricted only to Karnataka) was high in Sampaje and Karike forest respectively, however, C. stoloniferus (restricted to Karnataka and Maharashtra) was very high in Makut forest of Kodagu District. In Dakshina Kannada District C. nagabettai was well distributed in about 25 km radius around Subramanya, while Charmadi area has a rich population of C. thwaitesii and fairly good representations of C, prasinus, C. pseudotenuis and C. nagabettai. The population density of C. karnatafyensis (restricted to Karnataka and Goa) was very high in Anantavadi forests near Honnavar.

Aqueous extracts of twenty plants were screened by agar diffusion method for their antibacterial activity against Xantltomonas campestris pv. campestris, a causal organism of black rot of cabbage and cauliflower. Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestriswas found most sensitive to the leaf extract of Camellia sinensis. Some of the other plants such as Acacia arabicae, Aegle marmelos, Acacia catechu, Achyranthus asper, Asparagus racemosus, Azadirachta indica, Callistemon lanceolatus and Acacia femesiana, also showed the inhibitory effect against the test bacteria.

The present study deals with the detailed wood anatomy of the Indian species of the genus Chloroxylon swietenia DC belonging to the tribe of Flindersioideae of the family Rutaceae. Photomicrographs have been given for the diagnostic features. The wood of this tribe is used for carving, turnery and mathematical instruments. The genera includes mostly diffuse porous woods with marginal and diffuse parenchyma; exclusively simple perforation plate; non-vestured, alternate and minute inter vessel pitting with coalescent aperture. In all the samples prismatic crystals in chambered parenchyma cells were observed. New reports include coalescent aperture in the vessels and crystals in fibres for the first time.

Paper presents a comprehensive account on taxonomic identity, niche characteristics and distribution pattern of two important bamboo species of Meghalaya viz., Phyllostachys mannii Gamble and Sinarundinaria grifftthiana (Munro) C.S. Chao & Renvoize. The altitudinal distribution of both the species, and stand micro-environmental variables and soil characteristics indicate similar niche of the species. Both the species follow three-phase growth sequence. Based on the culm height, diameter and sheath morphology, it was concluded that Phyllostachys mannii, Phyllostachys assamica and Phyllostachys bambusoides are synonyms instead of being independent species as has been argued by many earlier workers. The distribution map of Phyllostachys mannii and Sinarundinaria grifftthiana in Meghalaya shows extremely restricted distribution. Phyllostachys mannii has a restricted distribution world-wide and is confined to Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland of India, Yunnan province of China, and Myanmar. Sinarundinaria grifftthiana has also extremely restricted distribution in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and hills of West Bengal in India, Bhutan, Laos, Myanmar, China and Vietnam. Hence, based on their global distribution pattern, both the species may be termed as Endemic to South-East Asia.

Bidaria indica Rahman & Wilcock, belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae is a rare endemic species found rarely in the Western Ghats regions of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Present collection from Naduvattam forest, near Ooty (Western Ghats), Nilgiri district, extended its distribution towards North Tamil Nadu. After Beddome's type collection, in 1857 it is for the first time this species is collected, after a lapse of 148 years from Tamil Nadu. This is also a new report from this district. The specimens have been compared with the specimens housed in Madras Herbarium, (MH), Coimbatore. A brief description together with ecological notes is provided for better understanding of this endemic and little known taxon.

The genus Delphinium L, (Ranunculaceae) is represented by 24 species in India, with all the species distributed in the Himalaya (Rau, 1993). During the recent survey in the trans-Himalayan cold desert of Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir, one of us observed distinct populations of Delphinium growing on rocky slopes near Khar Dung La. In these populations, petals were white and upper sepal spur was short, slightly curved, l/3rd or l/4th the length of upper sepal (excluding spur) or spur l/4th or l/5th the length of upper sepal (including spur). Herbarium consultation revealed the presence of the same characters in all the specimens collected from Ladakh, and housed in the herbarium of the Botanical Survey of India, Northern Circle, Dehra Dun (BSD). All these specimens were identified as D. brunonianum Royle, one of the common species of the genus in Western Himalaya. Critical study on these collections revealed more additional characters, viz., straight, usually sparsely hairy outer petal limb and white, membranous lower petals, which were in contrast with the characters observed in the populations of the species growing in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in Western Himalaya, in which petals were black, sepal spur almost half as long as upper sepal (excluding spur), outer petal limb oblique, glabrous and lower petal limb black, opaque. Literature consultation (Hooker & Thomson, 1872; Stewart, 1916-17, 1972; Munz, 1967-68; Kachroo & al., 1977; Nasir, 1991, Rau, I.e.; Wencai & Warnock, 2001; Uniyal, 2002; Zhengyi & al., 2003; Klimes & Dickore, 2007-08) including the protologue of D. brunonianum (Royle, 1970), which was described based on the specimens from Kunawar (Himachal Pradesh, India) confirmed the identity of the specimens of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as true D. brunonianum and Ladakh specimens, previously referred to this species were turned out to be D. nordhagenii Wendelbo, a rare Delphinium so far known from the small area in North-West Pakistan (Chitral) and South-West China. The same is described and illustrated here as a new record for India.

Stapf (1889) in the monograph on Ephedra L., described 31 species found world over. These species were primarily recognised on the basis of nature of bracts of female strobili, focusing the division into three main sections and their subsequent tribes. Price (1996) brought the species number to 50 by listing the various explored species by the eminent scientists and took geographical distribution as a key factor in classification of species. Sahni (1990) made an attempt to compile the description of eight Ephedra species (E. foliata Boiss, E. saxatilis Royle ex Florin, E. intermedia Schrenk & Meyer, E. gerardiana Wall. ex Stapf, E. pachyclada Boiss, E. nebrodensis Tineo, E. regeliana Florin and E. przewalskii Stapf) reported from hot desert of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Cold deserts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Florin (1933) segregated E. gerardiana var. wallichii, a distinct entity as E. saxatilis. To look into the current status of Indian Ephedras, the authors concentrated last seven years in exploring Western Himalayas, surveying and documenting each population from Spiti to Lahul in Himachal Pradesh. These field studies encompassed an attention-grabbing population in Sumling, district Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, rarely mixed with E. gerardiana. A detailed examination, evaluation and comparison of morphological characters of vegetative as well as reproductive parts of this population with live and the herbarium specimens of the other species housed at Forest Research Institute Dehra Dun (DD), Botanical Survey of India, Dehra Dun (BSD), literature on Ephedra taxonomy (Meyer, 1846, Stapf 1889, Pearson 1929, Florin 1933, Atal & Sood 1964, Sahni 1990, Mikage & Kondo 1998) has led us to the conclusion that the Ephedra populations of Sumling should be segregated as a new taxon, which is described here as Ephedra sumlingensis sp. nov. This new species is closely related to E. intermedia. In the absence of type specimen of E. intermedia, the new species has been compared to its original description and in the field.

Pterocarpus santalinus L. f. (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae), popularly known as Red Sanders or Red Sandalwood, is a medium-sized deciduous tree endemic to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (Sanjappa, 1992; Pullaiah and Chennaiah, 1997). It is referred to as the Pride of Eastern Ghats (Hajra & al., 1996). In trade/ vernacular, it is known as Raktachandan, Raktachandanamu, Lalchandan, Yerra chandanamu, Sivapu chandanam and so on (Kirtikar and Basu, 1984). In 1998, the Government of India has placed this plant species in the Negative list of export, which bans its trade/export from wild collections. The heartwood of P. santalinus is considered as astringent, tonic and is used as a external application for inflammation and headache. It is useful in bilious affections and skin diseases, in fever, boils and to strengthen the sight. It also acts as a diaphoretic and is applied to the forehead in headache. The wood, rubbed up with water, is advantageously employed as a wash in superficial excoriation of the genital organs. It is also used over swelling of eyelids for reducing the swelling (Kirtikar and Basu, 1984). The identification of vegetable crude drugs (medicinal plants/plant parts) involves a number of methods. Fluorescence analysis is one of the useful methods in the identification of vegetable crude drugs and in detecting adulterants (Tyler & al., 1976). In fluorescence analysis, the crude drugs may be examined as such, or in their powder form or in solution or as extracts. Although in most of the cases the actual phytochemicals that are responsible for the fluorescence properties have not been known, the merits of simplicity and rapidity of the process makes it a valuable analytical tool in the identification of plant samples/crude drugs (Denston, 1946). The present study was undertaken to examine the heartwood of this plant under ultraviolet radiation and record its characteristic fluorescent properties (colours), which will be useful to ascertain the identity/authenticity of this plant in its crude form and to distinguish it from adulterants, if any.

If the leaf juice is not employed for the preparation of LPC immediately after its extraction, the yield of LPC decreases with the time of storage. Therefore, preparation of LPC from juice immediately after its release is suggested. However, if the delay in preparation is unavoidable, additives like formic acid, citric acid, ascorbic acid and sodium metabisulphite may be employed, which prevent catabolic losses to some extent without affecting the recovery of leaf protein (LP).

Documentation of more than 40 indigenous medicinal practices revealed that this indigenous knowledge system of medicine effectively serves to the tribal people. However, what is disturbing is the disappearance of the medicinal plants from their habitat under intense anthropogenic pressure and also because of high level commercial use, posing a serious threat to the continuation of indigenous medicinal practices, which may have adverse impacts on physical, social and economic well being of the tribal people.

Genetic diversity was estimated among 39 genotypes of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] using 30 RAPD primers. A total of 411 RAPD amplicons were obtained, of which 382 (92.9%) were polymorphic. The per cent polymorphism ranged from 42.85 to 100 per cent. A wide range (40.8 to 90.3%) of Jaccards similarity coefficient was observed between the pairs of genotypes; the highest being observed between MH-98-1 and Vs ML-839, and the lowest between UPM-98 and Vs ML-131. The genotypes with a common ancestry and/or used repeatedly in mungbean improvement programme exhibited higher genotypic similarity. The extent of diversity among cultivars was also studied in relation to their source, and set of genotypes with narrow genetic base developed from particular place were identified. The genotypes formed 11 clusters, three main groups and eight minor groups, based on unweighted pair group methods for arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The cultivar ML-131 occupied a unique position and was most diverse from rest of the genotypes. Principal coordinate analysis and normalized Mantel statistics (r=0.92) supported cluster analysis. A concordance was observed between the position of genotypes in the cluster and their pedigree information.

Huge numbers of medicinal plant species are available in the study area for the treatment of skin diseases (eruptions, eczema, leucoderma, sores, cracks, cuts, boils, wounds, external tumors, etc.), body pain and swellings. Hence, a proper documentation of useful plants with their present status and local traditional knowledge as well as practices is urgently needed.

A protocol for selecting callus line tolerant to culture filtrate of Alternaria helianthi (ACF), which causes severe blight disease, was developed in sunflower using 40% ACF as selection pressure. In vitro plantlets were obtained from the selected callus on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium fortified with 2.0 mg/L N-6-Benzyl amino purine (BAP) and 0.5 mg/L à-Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). The plantlets obtained were rooted on MS medium fortified with 1.0 mg/L NAA or IBA. NAA proved better for rooting than IBA. In the preliminary experiments, in vitro developed plants from selected callus showed fewer symptoms of disease when spore suspensions of A. helianthi, was sprayed on the leaves.

Bambusa nairiana-a new bamboo species collected from Meghalaya, in the North Eastern part of India, is described and illustrated. it is distinguished from other Bambusa species by its short, eciliate auricles, glabrous ligule and pseudospikelets with 3 lodicules, two of them similar, obliquely cut from one side, rounded on another, the third ovate, apiculate, 5-nerved and ciliate along margins. This new species somewhat resembles Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. ex Wendl. in the shape of its culm-sheath but differs in having very small auricle. The paper compares it with B. vulgaris, provide diagnostic characters, complete description and illustrations.
