Twenty samples of nodule bacteria were isolated from nodules of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus L. Urban) of diverse origin. Their microbial and chemical characterizations were made. Some of the isolates were found to be fast growers and others were slow growers. The slow grower strains showed higher nitrate reductase and catalaes activities. All the isolates/appeared to be negative to nile blue and congo red tests. The isolates were classified serologically into two distinct groups. The fast growers constituted one sero group while the slow growers appeared to be of another group. All the isolates were able to fix nitrogen symbioticaily. The highest nitrogen fixation was observed in case of inoculation with yb-10 isolate. It was suggested that isolate yb-10 may be tried as a suitable inoculant for yam bean cultivation.

Effect of Boswellia serrata (L.) bark extracts on growth of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhiwas studied using agar well diffusion method. The acetone extract exhibited maximum antibacterial activity against all microorganisms. Gram negative bacteria were found to be more sensitive to all bark extracts. Presence of terpenoids, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids and cardiac glycosides in bark extracts were detected.

Reports the organogenetic potential of mature leaves of Selinum wallichianum Syn. Selinum tenuifolium. The basal medium, Murishige and Skoog (1962) supplemented with different concentrations of auxin showed callus induction. However, the maximum leaf explants (67%) produced callus in 3.0 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D). Significantly (P<0.05) higher percentage of explants producing shoots (100%), shoot number (14 shoots/explant) and shoot length 5.7cm was obtained in MS medium supplemented with 0.5 μM 6-benzyladenine (BA) and 0.5 μM gibberellic acid (GA₃) combination. Regenerated shoots were rooted on Murashige and Skoog (MS medium) fortified with 2 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and maximum 93.3% rooted shoots were achieved after 4 weeks of incubation in rooting medium. About 79% plantlets survived after 60 days of transfer in autoclaved sand and soil (1:1 ratio). The results provided practical way to sustainable utilization of Selinum wallichianum, one of the high value medicinal plants of Himalaya region.

The Phytochemical, anti-nutritive and mineral composition of the extract of the leaves of 'Waltheria americana [Syn. W. indica] and bark of 'Okoubaka aubrevillei' were determined. The extract was found to be very high in moisture content, low in ash, crude protein, carbohydrate and fat [98.32%, 0.32%, 0.32%, 0.03% and 1.16%] respectively. The inorganic determination revealed that the extract is very high in minerals such as Fe, K, Na, Ca and P; but low in Mg, Mn, and Cu; and trace in lead. It was equally found that the extract contained alkaloids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides and phlobatannis.

With increasing salinity, phosphorus content increased in different plant parts. Due to salinity more phosphorus got accumulated in the leaf tissue followed by that in stem and root. Salt stress caused stimulation of the activities of acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase. The activity of enzyme ATPase was inhibited due to salt stress. These findings clearly indicate that salinity not only caused an increase in the P^{5+ status of the horsegram stem and leaves, but also brought about marked changes in activities of various phosphatases.}

Branch cuttings of Bambusa vulgaris were collected in the month of April 2007 from the already established clumps of B. vulgaris in Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun Campus. The binodal cuttings were placed in horizontal and vertical positions for rooting. Observations were recorded on rooting response of branch cuttings. Maximum 80% rooting was recorded in the cuttings treated with IBA 100 ppm followed by Boric acid 100 ppm (70%) and control (70%). However, the minimum rooting percentage was observed in case of Boric acid + IBA 100 ppm (50%). Though, IBA 100 ppm treatment has proved to be the best rooting hormone for rooting of branch cutting of Bambusa vulgaris, equally good results were achieved in case of cuttings without any treatment that is 70% in (control). The vertical planting of cuttings for rooting is normally practical in dicots which is equally true for bamboos as well. However, the horizontal planting of cuttings gives better results in bamboos as in binodal cuttings, we get root and shoot initiation from both the nodes which can be subsequently separated into two distinct plants. Hence, farmers may adopt this method of producing the quality planting stock of Bambusa vulgaris by simply planting the branch cuttings, even without treatment.

Streptomyces sp. A₁₁, a collagenolytic soil isolate hydrolysed different types of collagen. The enzyme was isolated and purified. The enzyme was found to be extracellular and inducible. The specific activity units of the culture filtrate and the purified enzyme were 5.0 and 37.1 respectively. The molecular weight of the enzyme was 74,000. With bovine Achilles tendon, human placenta, calf skin and rat tail tendon collagen, the Km values obtained at pH 7.8 and 30°C were 2.3, 3.6, 3.7 and 2.7 mg/ml respectively. With synthetic peptide Km value was 31 x 10^{-5 M at the same pH and temperature. In the presence of 5 mM Ca2+, collagenase activity increased by 10.7%. With silver nitrate as non competitive inhibitor, the Ki was found to be 1.5 x 10-3M.}

Physico-chemical parameter and metal concentration in effluents of two industries i.e. Tannery industry, Jajmau, Kanpur and Electroplating industry, Scooter India Limited (SIL), Lucknow were determined to assess the toxicity of chromium. Metal accumulation in Echhornia crassipes growing in these contaminated sites were also determined. For laboratory toxicity testing the plants were exposed to nutrient solution containing Cr concentration ranging from 0.01-10 μg ml^{1 for 24-96 hr. Accumulation of chromium was observed to be dependent on its concentration and time of exposure and was greater in roots (789.3mgg1 d. wt.) than in leaves (335.6mg g1 d. wt.) after 96hr at 10μg ml1 concentration. Under field conditions the accumulation of Cr was 1258 and 733.3 in roots and 94 and 53μg g1 d. wt. in leaves of E. crassipes growing in Jajmau, Kanpurtanning industry and SIL effluents, respectively. lt was found that lower doses (0.01-0.1 μg ml1') of chromium had stimulatory effect on various metabolic activities in plants including chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll, protein, nitrate reductase and mitotic index. Whereas higher doses of chromium had inhibitory effect. The carotenoid content and number of micronuclei was found directly proportional to the concentration of chromium and increased with increase in concentration of chromium to which plants were exposed. It may be concluded from the present study that E. crassipes is tolerant to the elevated Cr concentration as there is no inhibition of chlorophyll and carotenoid upto 0.1 μ g ml1 at 24 and 48 hr exhibiting phytotoxicity at higher concentration. Therefore, E. crassipes may be used as bioassay for biomonitoring and control of Cr pollution in the environment.}

Ecological investgation on the Hartala lake near Bhusawal (M.S) was carred out. Algal samples were collected from three different sites of the lake during October, 1998 to September, 2000. Among the algal groups, blue green algae were found to be dominant over green algae, diatoms, desmids and the euglenoids. Among blue green algae, species of Microsystis and Oscillatoria were found to be dominant. Species of Scenedesmus, Spirogyra, Navicula, Cosmarium, Closterium, Euglena and Phacus were dominant. The saprobity index as well as the compound quotient value (CQ) indicated that the lake water was organically polluted.

A total of 14 species of Streptomyces were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Casuarina equisetifolia L. from different localities in India. Out of these few species were tested for antagonism against phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi. Streptomyces chattanoogensis, S. violaceochromogenesand S. olivaciscleroticus inhibited growth of Bacillus subtilis; S. chattanoogenis of B. subtilis and E. coli while S. olivaciscleroticus that of Xanthomonas citri. All of them inhibited the growth of Fusarium oxysporum, a phytopathogen.

The effects of different UV-B treatments on plant height of strawberry were determined. UV-B (280-320 nm) radiation was provided artificially by Q panel UV-B 313 fluorescent lamps in UV-B chamber. The transplanted plants were irradiated at 20th, 40th and 60th day after transferring for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Each treatment were replicated four times and plant height were recorded at 30th, 50th and 70th day after transplanting. Plant height of strawberry was decreased highly significantly due to UV-B treatment at various stages of growth. Our result showed that strawberry is a potentially UV-B sensitive plant.

The effects of light and quantity of spawn on the sporophore and sciential yields of Pleurotus tuber-regium, cultivated on cotton wastes, rice straw, cocoyam peel, corncob, groundnut shell and sawdusts of Mansonia altissima, Khaya ivorensis and Boscia angustifolia were observed. The organism had sporophore and sclerotial yield values of 36.8 and 27.6g kg^{1 waste, respectively, in cotton waste, at light quantum of 695 lux. There was a highly significant increase in yield ofsclerotia (188.0 g kg1 waste), in total darkness, while malformed fruitbodies (sporophores) were produced in all the substrates under the same condition. Increasing the quantity of spawn from 5 to 30% reduced the period of spawn run from 13to6,15to8and24to17 days, respectively, in P. tuber-regium fruitbodies grown in cotton waste, rice straw and sawdust of B. angustifolia, with yield values of 38.0 and 20.0 g kg1^>1 waste in cotton waste and rice straw. The optimal spawn levels for sclerotia formation in the two wastes were 10 and 5%, respectively. The mushroom did not produce sclerotia in corn cob and groundnut shell when exposed to light. However, maximal yield values of 286.8 and 288.4 g kg-' waste were obtained in both substrates in total darkness.}

Studies on diversity of fungi at four sites of Godavari river passing through Nanded (M.S.), were carried out. The samples of water were tested four times. i.e. in the months of January, April, July and October 2009 and analyzed for presence of fungal propaguies in terms of CPUs (Colony forming units). The average CFU ranged from 1098 to 2487 per liter of water. The highest number of CPU were reported from samples collected during the month of October while the lowest CFU were reported during the month of January. In all 21 fungal species were identified from Govardhan Ghat, 19 from Nangina ghat and old bridge while 16 from new bridge site. At all sites, dominant fungal species were among Deuteromycetes followed by Ascomycetes.

JB-5) of the forage berseem subjected to salt stress. Both cultivars were evaluated for uptake of Na+and K+in relation to their salt tolerance at seedling stage under different levels of salinity (0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 dSm₁)- Na+ concentrations significantly increased with increasing levels of salinity from 4 to 20 dSnr^{1 as well as with durations (at 5, 10 and 15 days) in root and shoot of both varieties, while K+ concentrations decreased with increasing levels of salinity but increased with durations in root and shoot of both varieties. Effect soil pollutants on Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (VAM) development of mangrove plants could be examined. VAM represents one nature's best gift to making in the conversion of arid soil to fertile and productive soils. VAM association is known to improve plant growth better uptake of nutrients and water and increased resistance or tolerance to drought and root pathogens. The physico-chemical, EC, P, N, Zn and heavy metals values were analysed and totally 10 plants were examined in mangrove study sites, among them all the plants were positive. Spores of three native VAM fungal species were isolated from mangrove forest and the bioassay was conducted using onion as the test plant to study the infection efficiency and confirmation of the production of VAM fungal species. Inoculated plants showed increased plant height, root-shoot, biomass and nutrient content when compared to uninoculated plants.

The study also includes some hitherto unknown medicinal claims, which are already known as medicinal.

Correlations and path coefficients for 15 quantitative characters were estimated in 264 genotypes of wheat grown in the hills of Kumaun Himalayas at Vivekanand Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan, Almora. High positive correlations of grain yield/plant with days to 75 % spike emergence, days to maturity, flag leaf length, flag leaf width, effective tillers/plant, spike length, number of spikelets/spike were observed. Path analysis indicated the importance of days to maturity, spike length number of grains/spike, biomass/plant, grain weight/spike, 1000-grain weight and number of spikelets/spike on grain yield suggesting using these characters for genetic improvement in wheat.

Both heat and chilling caused reduction in membrane protein thiol level and increased accumulation ofthiobarbituric acid reactive substances in 72 hr old germinating tissues (indicators ofoxidative stress) and reduced germination and early growth performances. Calcium chelator EGTA [Ethylene glycol-bis(2-aminoethylether)-N,N,N'N, tetra acetic acid] calcium channelblockerLaCI₃(Lanthanum chloride) and calmodulin inhibitor TFP (trifluroperazine) aggravated these effects of heat and chilling and added calcium reversed them. Imposition of heat and chilling stress during early germination also causes accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) like 0₂ and H₂0₂ Calcium treatment significantly reduced the accumulation of both the toxic ROS, while EGTA, LaCI₃ and TFP treatment enhanced the accumulation. Activities ofantioxidative enzymes catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APOX) and glutathione reductase (GR) and total thiol content decreased significantly under both heat and chilling stress in germinating Amaranthus seedlings. Seedlings raised with Ca^{2 treatment under heat and chilling stress exhibit higher activities of CAT, GR and APOX and total thiollevel than the untreated plants. EGTA, LaCI₃ and TFP treatment, on the other hand significantly reduce the activities of all anti-oxidative enzymes and total thiol level. The work clearly supports the view that Ca2 -signalling pathway plays significant role in limiting heat and chilling induced oxidative stress by up-regulating antioxidative defense during recovery phase of post- germination event in Amaranthus lividus.}

Determines the effect of the litter chemistry of Ulmus villosa Brandis grown in the Dachigam National Park Srinagar J&K on their decomposition rates. Freshly fallen litter from the species were analyzed for N. Litter bag technique was used to determine their mass loss in the field for 1 year at monthly intervals. Litter bags were collected and return to the laboratory and then analyzed for their mass loss. Final mass loss was 80%. Initial nitrogen concentration of the species affected their decomposition rates and hence the nutrient cycling processes in this forest ecosystem.

In the outcrossed populations of Coix aquatica maintained in the Botanical Garden of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathawada University, few plants were isolated which exhibited the phenomena of reciprocal translocations. The pollen mother cell showed chains or rings of chromosomes of various sizes at diakinesis. These plants showed complex interchanges involving up to eight and rarely ten chromosomes at diakinesis. The plants exhibited semi-sterility.

Antibacterial effect of different plant parts of Acacia arabica, Azardiracta India, Allium sativum and Zingiberofficinal is was tested against bacterial pathogens viz E. coli (MTCC No: 1680), Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC No: 7443), Streptococcus pyogenes (MTCC No: 1925) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC No: 4727) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC No: 3384). Extracts of leaves, fruits and flowers of A. arabica were found to be most effective against all bacterial strains. Extract of A. sativutn also exhibited significant effect. Aqueous extract of Z officinalis rhizome was however, found to be ineffective against Streptococcus, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella.

Rhizosphere of tomato is colonized by several different types of microorganisms that influence its seed germination, seedling growth as well as health. Number, type and distribution of rhizosphere microorganisms change at different growth stages of the plants. In the investigation, twenty four species of fungi were isolated from the rhizospnere of tomato plants at different growth stages. These included Fusarium spp., Aspergillus spp., Penicillium spp., Curvularia lunata, Cladosporium dadosporioides, Helminthosporium sp., Mucor plumbeus, Altemaha alternata, Cephalosporium acremonium, Trichoderma spp,. and a white sterile fungus. The metabolites of Trichoderma spp., Aspergillus spp., Cladosporium cladosporioides and the white sterile fungus were found to enhance the seed germination as well as the seedling growth of tomato. These fungi showed antagonistic activity against tomato wilt causing pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. tycopersici (Fol), when tested by colony interaction method. The metabolites of these fungi exhibited differential degrees of growth inhibition of Fol.

Mustard (Brassica juncea L) is an important oil seed crop and is extensively grown in Bihar State in India but this state also provide ideal environmental conditions for the natural contamination of aflatoxin in different agricultural crops including mustard. Altogether 50 samples of mustard seeds were collected on random basis from different markets located at Bhagaipur and nearby areas during the year 2000, Species of Aiternaria, Aspergillus, Curvu/aria, Fusarium, Peniciilium and Rhizopus were fund to be associated with some of the seeds of those samples, incidence of which varied from 12-60%. Some of the isolates of Aspergillus flavus were toxigenic which produced aflatoxins in culture media. Out of 50 samples analysed, seven samples were found to be naturally contaminated with aflatoxins in the range of 790-1120 μg/kg.

Extracts of two medicinal plants-Psidium guajava and P. guineense were evaluated in vitro in different organic solvents, viz., benzene, acetone, chloroform, methanol, petroleum ether, ethanol, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts. All these preparations displayed bactericidal effect against Ralstonia solanacearum which causes bacterial wilt in Solanaceae plants. Among them, the ethanol part of leaf crude extracts prepared from the leaves of Psidium guajava and P. guineense shows maximum inhibition as compared to aqueous extract as control and Tetracycline and Streptomycin as standards. The inhibition of P. guajava against Ralstonia solanacearum equalizes near about to P. guineense in both disc diffusion and silica cotton method but less than the both standard antibiotics.

Evaluates the autotoxic effects of aqueous extracts of leaves, stem, root, rhizosphere soil, litter and root exudates from field grown chrysanthemum on the seed germination and seedling growth of the same plant specie. The aqueous extracts, from above-ground parts were highly autotoxic to seed germination and seedling growth and autotoxicity increased with the increasing concentrations. The aqueous extracts inhibited the enzymatic activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) in roots and nitrate reductase (NR) in leaves and significantly stimulated the formation of malonylodialdehyde (MDA) in leaves. We conclude that autotoxicity observed in laboratory conditions was partly responsible for negative effects observed in field or greenhouse, or for problem of continuous cropping of chrysanthemum.

Medicinal plants and traditional medicine play an important role in the health care system of most developing countries. The traditional health care practice is mainly dependent on medicinal plants collected from the wild. Local Knowledge associated with the use and conservation of medicinal plants is either codified in ancient scriptures of is folk based and transmitted through generation in the form of community based health traditions. The knowledge and use of medicinal plants species by traditional healers was investigated in Jabalpur district.(M.P.) from October 2008 to March 2009. Traditional healers of the study area were selected randomly and interviewed with help of translators to gather information on the knowledge and use of medicinal plants used as a remedy for human ailments in the study area. In the current study, it was reported that 3 plant species belonging to 30 genera and 29 families were commonly used to treat various human ailments.

Non-volatile and volatile metabolites of all the 29 test fungal antagonists were found to reduce the mycelial growth, scierotial production and germination of the pathogen. Minimum mycelial growth, scierotial production and germination was observed by Trichoderma kon/ngii 5201 followed by Chaetomium cochliodes 3319 in ali the non-volatile and volatile metabolites. However, in non-volatile metabolites minimum size of sclerotia was observed in Trichoderma wrens 4177 followed by Trichoderma koningii 5201 and in volatile metabolites minimum size was observed in Trichoderma harzianum 5230. In different combination of isolates also, the combination of Trichoderma kon/ngii 5201 + Chaetomium cochliodes 3319 showed maximum inhibition of mycelial growth, scierotial production, size and germination.

Seed of Cassia fistula (Linn.), a medicinally important ornamental tree were subjected to various soil depths for determination of suitable depth for germination. The seeds were sown six depths 1,2,3,4,5 and 10 cm. The soil depth of 2cm. is most significant for germination. In 2cm. depth higher germination were recorded (80%), however, further increase in depth beyond 0-2 to 0-6 a decrease in percentage germination was found. Deeper sowing delayed germination and the number of days taken for commencement of germination increased with an increase in the depth of sowing.

Biocontrol efficacy of the PCNB resistant mutant strains of Trichoderma species, extracellular enzymatic activity of mutant strains was also assayed. Twenty one mutants of Trichoderma harzianum 4572 were obtained after treatment with NTG and selection on PCNB amended medium, which were further screened agaisnt Sclerot/um rolfsii by dual culture method. All the mutants indicated equally high tolerant capability of PCNB but only three mutants were shown enchanced antagonistic activity against S, rolfsii in colony plate assay as compared with the wild type and control. The result of extracellular enzymatic activity showed that chitinase and (31,3-glucanase significantly increased in the mutant strains as compared to wild type while protease activity was found suppressed in all the mutant strains. Among the mutant strains, Th mu6 was found as most potent strain against S. rolfsii causing Southern stem blight disease in soybean and therefore, this strain can be studied in glasshouse and field experiment to control the above disease.
