Recent work on the venation patterning and morphogenesis of leaf/leaflet has posed the question how different are these in tendrils, which are another type of vegetative lateral organ. Here, the venation patterns of leaflets, stipules and tendrils were compared in the model species, P. sativum. Unlike reticulated venation in leaflets and stipules, venation in tendrils comprised of one or more primary veins. A few secondaries were attached to a primary vein, mostly distally. Bilaterally symmetrical secondary veins were rare. The primary veins in tendrils were daughter strands from dichotomously divided mother veins in rachis, connected finally to vascular strands in stem. A tendril received primary vein from one or more mother strands. Some mother strands contributed primary veins to proximal, distal and terminal domain tendrils of af leaf. The tendrils shared the multi-primary vein character with stipules. Vein redundancy provided a mechanism for survival of tendril/leaf against injury to some of the veins/mother veins. The presence of aborted primary veins that did not reach apex, rows of cambium cells attached to primary vein(s) at apex, the pattern of attachment of primary veins to mother veins and cessation of vein growth in apical direction in aborted tendrils of af lld genotype indicated that the growth of primary veins and tendril was acropetal. Loss-of-function of AF extended the repression of TL and MFP genes on leaflet development from distal and apical domains to proximal domain of leaves in af mutants.

Isoetes L. is a herbaceous, aquatic to terrestrial lycopod in which mega and microsporangia are produced on separate sporophylls (leaves). Megaspores are large and trilete whereas microspores are small and monolete (in majority). Thin serial sections through the megasporangial portion show presence of abnormal embryonic structures in the spore contents of the functional megaspores. Sterile spores do not have spore contents and are empty. This type of abnormal embryos have been reported for the first time in the genus Isoetes L.

Genus Williamsonia was instituted on the basis of study of the specimens collected from the Secondary rocks of Yorkshire (Britain). More than 80 species of this genus are known from the world and over a dozen from the Indian sub-continent. This seed bearing cone has a conical/hemispherical receptacle covered by a compact layer of seminiferous and interseminal scales. In some species (W. gigas), the apical portion of the receptacle is naked and without scales. Each fertile scale has an orthotropus ovule with a long micropylar canal. 5-8 sterile scales surround an ovule which has an uneven, non-vascularised integument and free nucellus with a long nucellar stalk. Seed is endospermic with a dicot embryo. Linear, little curved bracts protect the compact layer of scales. Relationship of Williamsonia with allied taxa of Bennettitales (Cycadeoidea, Williamsoniella and Amarjolia) is discussed and made use in tracing the phylogeny of Williamsonia and origin of angiosperms.

Lichen specimens were collected from all available substrates, including bark of trees and shrubs, dead wood, rocks and mosses, in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. The collected specimens were dried and preserved for identification. A voucher specimen of each species was deposited in the National Repository at CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow (LWG). Study of the lichen assemblage reveals that the following five species are new records to the Indian lichen flora: Acarospora saxicola Fink ex Hedrick, Candelariella reflexa (Nyl.) Lettau, Chaenotheca furfurcea (L.) Tibell, Fuscopannaria praetermissa (Nyl.) P. M. Jorg., and Lepraria caesioalba (B. de Lesd.) J. R. Laundon.

Members of the genus Ipomoea of family Convolvulaceae besides being some of the most beautiful ornamental plants cultivated for their bell shaped flowers, are also of medicinal value, with some of them reported as cytotoxic agents against some cancer cell lines. The present study evaluates the anticancer activity of the leaf extracts of ten Ipomoea Jacq. Species growing in and around Mumbai, India, on the A 549 cellline and Hep-G2 cell line evaluated by the SRB assay. The crude aqueous extracts of leaves of Ipomoea species studied had significant cytotoxic effect on HEP G2 Cell Line and showed significant inhibitory effect on A549 cell line. I. Cairica was the best growth inhibitor (GI50at 30.6μg/ml) for HEP G2 cell line followed by I. Hederifolia (GI50 at 38.1 μg/ml), I. Carnea (GI50 at 40.0 μg/ml). Considering the A549 cell line, none of the crude extracts showed GI50 inhibition upto80 μg/ml with the exception of I. aquatic which showed GI50at 75.6 μg/ml.

In bioassay studies the analysis of variance showed highly significant difference in seed germination of Haricot bean (Haramaya variety) treated with chemical mutagen (Sodium azide) when compared with the control plants. The agronomic traits variations based on green house experiment showed that the plant height, number of branch and internodes length were significantly increased in 0.01% concentration of sodium azide in Haramaya variety of haricot bean. Days required for flowering and days required for maturity were found to be significantly decreased in the lower doses of chemical mutagen.

New species of Lithomucorites Kar et al. (L. tripuraensis sp. nov.) has been described from the Bhuban Formation (Early Miocene) of Maharanicherra, Tripura. Different phases of its life cycle are examined. The hyphae, auxiliary cells, chlamydospores and zygospores develop within a zygosporangium formed after the fusion of two gametangia. Accessory multiplication is by non-motile spores developed within sporangium. Usually, the sporangium contains large number of spores. The recovery of fungal remains suggests that the region experienced a humid tropical climate during the course of sedimentation with thick vegetation providing suitable substrates for the growth and proliferation of fungi.

Investigation deals with the palynological study of seven honey samples obtained from various Apis cerana apiaries located in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh. One honey sample, collected from Chinthalapudi, has been found to be unifloral whereas other honey samples are multifloral. Unifloral honey has single, predominant pollen type, i.e. Mimosa pudica. Pollen of Psidium guajava, Capsicum frutescens, Justicia procumbens, Helianthus annuus, Ageratum conyzoides, Phoenix sylvestris, Leucas aspera, Mimosa pudica were recorded as secondary pollen types in the multifloral honeys. These taxa were considered as chief bee forage and nectariferous plants during winter in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Paper enumerates 214 lichen species belonging to 80 genera and 34 families, enroute from Naitwar to Har ki Dun, in Govind Wildlife Sanctuary (GWLS), Uttarkashi District, Uttarakhand. Family Parmeliaceae exhibits its dominance with 45 species followed by Physciaceae, Cladoniaceae, Pyrenulaceae and Lecanoraceae represented with 27, 18, 16 and 13 species respectively. Among the different altitudinal ranges, the altitude range from 3000 to 3500 m exhibits the maximum lichen species in the area. The localities in lower altitudes (up to 1500 m) with, anthropogenic activities, have poor diversity of lichens while, higher altitude localities (beyond 2500 m) exhibit rich diversity of lichens. The alpine regions in and around 3500 m have luxuriance of moss, rock and soil inhabiting lichens while the temperate region having rich tree vegetation exhibit dominance of corticolous lichens.

Pollen analysis of a honey sample collected from Khallagaon, Kanchanpur District, western Nepal, shows a variety of pollen grains which were brought by honey bees during their visit to flowers of these plants for forage and nectar collection. The pollen assemblage is dominated by pollen of trees and shrubs, whereas herbs are meagrely represented by Brassica campestris. The commonly found tree and shrub pollen belong to Schleichera oleosa, Shorea robusta, Pongamia pinnata, Ricinus communis, Prosopis juliflora, Eucalyptus sp., Malvaceae, Grewia oppositifolia, Rutaceae, Bombax sp., Acacia sp., Madhuca indica, Saccharum indicum and Pinus wallichiana. However, the rest of the forest elements are not well represented despite their frequent presence in the area. In the pollen spectra, maximum representation is of Schleichera oleosa followed by Shorea robusta and Brassicaceae. These taxa are the major source of pollen and nectar in the bee hives of area. The honey production may be peaked during late winter to early spring since the major forage plants achieve peak of flowering during this period. The present investigation reveals that this region has great potential for bee keeping and therefore knowledge of flora of this region is important for its optimum exploitation.

Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni is an important medicinal plant used as noncaloric commercial sweetener. Plants regenerated with higher levels of copper sulphate in the medium exhibited enhanced activity of peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase (PPO) enzymes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed increase in size and number of electron dense inclusions in the chloroplasts of plants regenerated at optimised level of copper sulphate (0.5μM) in the medium. There was decrease in chlorogenic acid (CGA) content. Chl-a-fluorescence transient pattern (OJIP) showed that the photosynthesis process was more efficient at 0.5μM CuSO4 in the medium.

Twenty watermelon genotypes comprising seventeen land races (WM-5, WM-10, WM-14, WM-14*, WM-16, WM-18, WM-19, WM-22, WM-27, WM-30, WM-35, WM-40, WM-42, WM-43, WM-51, WM-52, Thar Manik), two exotic genotypes (Cal Sweet and Crimson Sweet) and one susceptible check (Sugar Baby) were screened under artificial and natural epiphytotic conditions to study the variability in leaf morphology conferring resistance against cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The DAS-ELISA results confirmed the presence of CMV in watermelon genotypes. Phylloplane morphological characteristics were studied and correlated with per cent disease index (PDI) values. The stomatal size, stomatal density and stomatal index were positively and significantly correlated with the PDI. They were significantly higher in susceptible check (Sugar baby) as compared to resistant genotypes on both adaxial and abaxial phylloplanes. Trichome size and frequency were highest in resistant genotypes and lowest in susceptible check on both upper and lower phylloplanes. Higher trichome density and low stomatal aperture could act as structural barriers that provide physical hindrance against vector and therefore, reduce the chances of disease. Based on coefficient of infection (CI), leaf surface structures and their interaction among themselves, four genotypes viz., WM-5, WM-10, WM-30 and Thar Manik were found to be resistant against CMV both under artificial and natural conditions. Therefore, these leaf characteristics can be taken as possible morphological markers for screening and augmenting resistant breeding programmes.

The new species shows close resemblance with the modern fruits of Hyphaene Garten.

Qualitative screening using ethanol and aqueous leaf extract of Tarenna asiatica showed the presence of primary and secondary metabolites. The ethanol extract was used to formulate 5% and 10% test ointment. The 5% and 10% test ointment healed the excision and incision wound in wistar rat. 10% test ointment was found to be superior as compared to 5% test ointment in contracting the wound and increasing the tensile strength of the skin.

Himachal Pradesh lies in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR), is one of the richest reservoirs of biological diversity in the world, having a rich wealth of medicinal and aromatic plant wealth. The Pleurospermum candollii, is very important and rare medicinal herb found at very high altitude of 4500m amsl. The various species of Pleurospermum possess medicinal and antioxidant properties. Moreover, some species of Pleurospermum are also used in perfumery. Pleurospermum candollii is used in the treatment of dysentery, dyspepsia, renal pain, stomachache and flatulence. The seeds of Pleurospermum candollii were deep dormant and have very poor germination (7%), besides having high viability status of 98. In the present paper seed storage studies on dormancy status and germination status is discussed. The effect of various germination inhibitor tests on germination of various phytometer species is also studied. The implications of the present research will be very productive and helpful in the seed based conservation of the various medicinal plant species in which the germination is poor and have dormancy.

The paper reports the utility of a common wetland plant Bena in traditional craft making in some rural pockets of Jajpur district of Odisha. The field survey was conducted during the year 2010-2012 to access the present status of this unique plant based craft as well as the condition of the artisans involved in this craft making. Data were collected through interview with elderly artisans of the area of study. The result revealed that making artifacts from Bena is exclusively the hand work of female folk belonging to SC (Scheduled caste) and ST (Scheduled tribe) communities. Most of these artisans are either daily wage labourers or marginal farmers while making such craft is their secondary occupation. They collect the raw material, i.e. Bena stem from the nearby field, process it and make around two hundred varieties of attractive craft items both for traditional use in socio-religious rituals and as modern life style accessories. These artifacts are appreciated for their intricate design and glazing golden yellow colour. The existing conditions of this folk craft as well as the artisans were analysed. Some remedial measures are suggested to save this endangered craft from oblivion.

In this study the preliminary pharmacognostical studies such as, morphology and transverse section of the leaf were observed. Physicochemical evaluation such as, foreign matter, moisture content, different extractive values, different ash values and fluorescence analysis were performed to explore the constants of noxious weed Ipomoea cairica. The foreign matter adulterated in one gram powder was found to be 0.15gms, alcohol soluble extractive 0.25g and chloroform soluble extractive 1.75g. Total ash value 1.02g, Acid insoluble ash value (dil. HCI) 0.85 g; Sulphated ash value (H2SO4) 0.43g; Water soluble ash value (H2O) 0.78g. Study was aimed at molecular genetic fingerprint profile of 15 genotypes of three populations of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. from Himalayan regions of India using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) based markers. Needles of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. were collected from Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh (HP), Nainital, Uttarakhand (UK) and Darjeeling, West Bengal (WB) regions of India. The samples were subjected to DNA extraction and RAPD analysis using oligonucleotide purification cartridge (OPC) primers. Out of 15 primers tested, nine primers gave scorable bands. Altogether 48 bands were obtained, out of which 43 were found to be polymorphic. Number of amplified fragments with RAPD primers ranged from four to eight with the size of amplicon ranging from 500 to 7,000bp. Investigation of natural diversity at intraspecies level was performed with 15 genotypes. Forty-eight amplification products were scored by RAPD and showed 89.58% polymorphism with a mean intrapopulation genetic diversity (Hpop) of 0.2754. A significant inter- and intrapopulation diversity was observed, with the percentage of polymorphic loci (Pp) ranging from 50.09 to 70.83%, Shannon's information index (I) from 0.3262 to 0.4689 and Nei's gene diversity (h) from 0.2032 to 0.3335 with mean Nei's gene diversity 0.377 and the overall estimate of gene flow being (Nm) 1.3555. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic average (UPGMA) analysis based Dendrogram showed single cluster. The variation amongst the samples of the three ecological regions can be attributed to varied climatic conditions and may help in conservation/future cultivation of these species.

Investigation was carried out on phytochemical characterization and antibacterial activity of Lindenbergia i;dica Vatke (Family-Scrophulariaceae) which is a perennial herb found to grow on bare rocks and old brick walls in Doon valley. Ethnobotanical studies shows that juice of this plant is used traditionally in chronic bronchitis, sore throat, toothache and is applied to skin eruptions, cuts and wounds. Phytochemical screening of the dried plant extract showed the presence of alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, cardiac glycosides, saponins, triterpenoids, tannins and phenols. The antibacterial act.ivity of this plant was carried out using agar disc diffusion method at different concentrations of crude extracts against 12 bacterial strains pathogenic to h'uman beings. Among the seven extracts assayed, acetone and ethanol extracts were found to be most active that exhibit antibacterial activity against most of the studied bacterial strains. Therefore, Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of acetone and ethanol extracts was determined against the selected bacterial strains showing zones of inhibition 2: 10 mm. The results indicate the potential of 1. indica Vatke in treating bacterial infections, thus, justifying their traditional use in the treatment of chronic bronchitis, sore throat,.toothache and skin eruptions, which are of infectious Origin.

The effect of fiber length on wood density is found non-significant.

Rig Veda, the oldest one among the four Vedas, pronounces the phenomenon of the Solar eclipse in a mythical language. During the eclipse, the eclipse induced gravity waves causes a reduction in Ozone layer concentration in the stratosphere which allows more cosmic radiations of different wavelengths, to the surface of the earth. The research carried out about the radiations received during the past eclipses and its influence on seawater reveal the scientific knowledge behind Rishi Atri's dispelling of darkness by the four Rigs, given in Pancavimsa Brahmana. Hence, for the first time, the eclipse event is differentiated into a four stage process, as per our recent findings on the change in Oceanic pH. The influence of solar eclipse on living organisms, especially, the erratic behaviour of animals, birds and marine organisms to eclipse is addressed. This new scientific finding supports strongly the Vedic predictions of eclipse and the traditional practices of Indians especially Hindus, which differ from region to region.

Study was carried out between July and August, 2009. Totally ten commonly sold spoilt fruits (orange, banana, pineapple, date palm, tomato, garden egg, water melon, guava, Shear butter, and coconut), were collected from retailers at Rimi, Kurmi and Kofar Wambai markets in Kano Municipal local government. The samples outer surfaces were disinfected with 0.lg/Iit sodium hypochlorite solution and then homogenated using distilled water in a blender. The homogenates were cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates and incubated aerobically at room temperature for 7 days. Pure cultures of the resulting fungal colonies were obtained from primary plates and identified by using morphological and microscopical characterizations. All the samples were infected with one or more fungal species such as Aspergillus, Penicilium, Rhizopus, Mucor, Alternaria Cladosporium, Neurospora and Fusarium. Among this, the most predominant pathogenic fungus was Aspergillus. Pathogenicity test with isolated fungi on fresh fruits showed that some were found to grow and cause spoilage. Proper handling from the farm and storage and as well as avoiding the mixing of spoilt and good fruits were identified to be important factors that could be helped to prevent contamination and loss. Fumigation with chemicals like sulphur dioxide, washing with fungicides or hot water and use of standard storage facilities were also recommended to prevent economic loss due to fungal pathogens. In view of increasing threat of climate change, extreme whether conditions, and recent financial crisis there has been a concern for augmenting agriculture and food supply to growing population, particularly to the rural areas. Fortunately the communities living near biodiversity rich areas depend on wide variety of plant resources for their survival; selected species have high potential for food supply in near future. In this study, we investigated a multi-ethnic area in North east India, a global hotspot, where communities show high dependence on wild plant resources for their sustenance. We addressed the issues of diversity of food plants being collected from wild habitats and their prospect as new food items, broad nutritive values of selected edible wild plants, and suggested some guiding policy concerns for management of these valuable resources. The investigation was done during 2006 to 2011; a total of 289 plants species were recorded used by selected tribal communities for diverse needs; 75 plant species used for their fruits, 65 as vegetables, 18 as mushrooms, 163 as medicinal plants, 13 as spices, and 11 species for making local drinks and beverages. Use of an algae Prasiola crispa as vegetable was found confined to Monpa and Sherdukpens only. Nearly 76 species were traded in markets involving a good annual turnover. Most promising medicinal plant species of the area comprised Aconitum fletcherianum G.Taylor, Clerodendrum colebrookianum Walp., Swertia chirayita H.Karst., Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc., Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle, Dendrobium nobile Lindl., and Artemisia nilagirica (C.B.Clarke) Pamp. that were harvested on commercial scale for selling in national and international markets. More species were used at higher altitudes showing greater dependence on wild plant resources. Nutritive values of 16 most preferred edible species revealed that they comprised considerable proximate and macro-nutrients; some are well comparable with commercial fruits and crops in their nutritional quality. It is found the wild edible species play an important role in dietary nutritional balance, and access to these wild plant resources ensures communities to overcome uncertain food stocks particularly during adverse and extreme weather conditions. The study highlights the need to protect these plants in their wild habitats; selected species be domesticated by developing cultivation protocols. It is also emphasized that wild edible plants is an ignored facet of food supply, however if properly planned it can facilitate to develop multifunctional agricultural policies for securing food production along with sustaining landscapes, biodiversity and cultural heritage in rural areas at any part of the globe.

Piglet mortality pattern of Large White Yorkshire pigs were analyzed utilizing the last data available in organized farm. Among the different causes of piglet mortality traumatic shock due to crushing by mother (25.0 per cent), pneumonia (25.0 per cent), hepatitis (17.13 per cent) and haemorrhagic enteritis (13.46 per cent) was found to be common. The percentage of mortality was higher (69.23 pr cent) in 0 to 15 days age group which was mostly due to crushing by mother. As the mortality during the first 15 days was high, it can be concluded that utmost care should be given in early life. Strict hygienic measures will help in reducing the infection related diseases.

Ethanolic, aqueous and Petroleum ether extracts from the whole fern, Oleandra musifolia (Bl.) Presl. (FamilyOleandraceae) was investigated for anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus,รบ with varied drug concentration (25, 50, and 100) mg/ml and the time taken for paralysis and death of the worm was determined. The in-vitro anthelmintic activity was compared with standard reference drug Albendazole and control distilled water. The result showed ethanolic extract performed well to express the anthelmintic efficacy than aqueous and petroleum ether extracts and the standard Albendazole. However efficacy is better and directly proportional to the increase in varied drug concentration. The efficacy is determined as lesser time taken to cause paralysis and death of Haemonchus contortus as compared to standard reference drug.

Study reports the medicinal plants commonly used by different tribal communities located in Wayanad district, Kerala to cure reproductive disorders. The plant parts utilized, methods of preparation of remedies, tribes associated, status, habit and the place where it was practiced are documented. The ethno botanical indigenous tribal knowledge was collected by visiting traditional healers and documenting the medicinal plants used. A total of 35 plant species belonging to 28 families were documented and identified as herbal remedies for reproductive problems. Most species used were from Fabaceae (17.14%), followed by Annonaceae and Moraceae (5.71%). The majority of herbal preparations for reproductive afflictions were prepared from the roots (20%) followed by bark (17.04%) while other plant parts are also used in varied percentage. It was observed that fresh plant material was used to prepare remedies and was prepared as mixtures of multiple ingredients from different plants. The information gained on frequently used traditional remedies will give some leads for future targets for further analysis in order to develop new drugs for reproductive disorders in humans.

Arthorniaceae, Chrysothricaceae, Graphidaceae, Lecanoraceae, Parmeliaceae, Pertusaricaeae, Physiciaceae and Ramaliaceae are the most common among different lichen families while Caloplaca, Cryptothecia, Dirinaria, Heterodermia, Lecanora, Lepraria, Parmaotrema and Pertusaria are the dominant lichen genera on trees. The crust forming together with leprose to sub-leprose lichens represents primary colonization of lichens in tropical dry and moist deciduous forests of the region comprising of young tree vegetation. Illicium griffithii Hook.f. & Thoms. one of the significant aromatic and medicinal tree species occurring in subtropical to temperate forest of Arunachal Himalaya. However, the species is growing in selected forest patches to a few locations. Dried seed pods are economically valuable having good market potential for spices and pharmaceutical purposes. Fruit is considered to be carminative, aromatic stimulant, stomachic and galactagogue. It is used as medicine to cure abdominal pain, cough, dyspepsia, food poisoning, vomiting, toothache and sinusitis. It is also used as an antifungal agent and food preservative. Owing to its high demand, local inhabitants harvest large quantity of fruits every year. Collected seeds are sold in local market at the rate from 120 to 150lkg which mainly depends on the market demand. Fruits may also be a potential source of shikimic acid for the production of Tami flu (oseltamivir), an active drug against avam influenza or bird flu. Further investigations on its chemical aspects are required to meet the needs of shikimic acid . for the country as well as global market. This is an important source of natural off-farm income to the rural people of (he West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh where the present study was undertaken. Keeping economic values in consideration, I. griffithii has the tremendous potential to reduce the poverty and will also provide employment opportunity to the rural inhabitants through bio-prospecting of the species which will contribute towards the socio-economic development of the rural people of Arunachal Himalaya.

For several years, varieties of plants have been used throughout India to treat oral care issues and are used till date in rural as well as urban areas. The inhibitory effects of aqueous extracts and essential oil of three plants, Neem (Azadirachta indica), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) against clinical isolates identified as Staphylococcus auricularis, Micrococcus species, Acinetobacter lwoffii and Candida albicans, were studied. Cinnamon extract successfully inhibited all four organisms showing largest zones of inhibition. Clove oil inhibited S. auricularis, A. lwoffii and C. albicans but not Micrococcus. Neem oil did not show any significant activity against any organisms. Toothpastes were then formulated using effective plant extract showed the antimicrobial activity.

Aerva javanica belonging to family (Amaranthaceae) roots and flowers are reported to possess medicinal properties against rheumatism and kidney problems. The present work is to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of Aerva javanica by cisplatin induced renal toxicity in adult male albino rats of Wistar strain. The effect ofalcoholic extract and aqueous extract were evaluated at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg, in rats against nephrotoxicity induced by administration of cisplatin through intra peritoneal route. Various serum parameters were studied along with histopathological examination of kidneys in each treatment group. Both the extracts were compared to the ursolic acid at the dose of 150 mg/kg as a standard drug. Alcoholic extract was foundto have significant nephroprotective activity. The levels of urea, creatinine, albumin and total protein in the serum were normalized after treatment with alcoholic extract at both the doses. The alcoholic extract at the dose of 400 mg/kg shows similar result as compared to the reference standard ursolic acid. The alcoholic extract of A. javanica possesses marked nephroprotective activity and thus can have a promising role in the treatment of acute renal injury.

Lantana camara is notorious weed and a popular ornamental garden plant belonging to the family verbenaceae. L. camara is native to tropical and subtropical America. An experiment was conducted to understand inhibitory effects of aqueous leaf extracts derived from L.camara on growth of P. hysterophorus in fruiting stage. Bioassay also indicated that the inhibitory effect was proportional to the concentrations of the extracts and higher concentration had the stronger inhibitory effect.

Insect growth regulators activity against the Lepidoterous pest Euproctis icilia and Euproctis fraterna was observed. The effect of Penfluron and Diamino-furyl-s-triazine. Two type of treatment given larval feeding treatment. A activity on weight loss of the both experimental insects larvae included third instar as well as fifth instar. The administration of penfluron and diamino-furyl-s-triazine was done by feeding technique to Euproctis icilia and Euproctis fraterna larvae, to see its interaction on the experimental insect. The effect of the chemical at lethal and sublethal levels was recorded. The parameter of study was growth and weight loss during exposure period.

Despite the increasing acceptance of traditional medicines in peri-urban areas in South Africa, this rich indigenous knowledge is not adequately documented. Therefore, an ethnobotanical study was undertaken to document medicinal plants grown and maintained in per-urban domestic gardens in the Capricorn District, Limpopo Province. Semi-structured interviews, observation and guided walks with 62 participants were employed to obtain ethnobotanical data on medicinal plants grown and maintained in peri-urban domestic gardens. Data collected included the names of plant species growing and maintained in domestic gardens as medicines, plant parts used, methods of herbal preparation and administration. A total of 37 species belonging to 34 genera and 27 families were recorded. Carica papaya, Catharanthus roseus, Cotyledon orbiculata, Crassula capitella, Erythrina lysistemon, Pelargonium peltatum, Pelargonium zonale, Sansevieria hyacinthoides, Schinus terebinthifolius and Sclerocarya birrea had the highest values of Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) and widely grown and managed by the inhabitants of the Limpopo Province. Cold, cough, sore throat, gastro-intestinal disorders, fever, headache, injuries, circulatory system problems and sexually transmitted infections were treated with at least five species each. This study established that traditional medicines still play an important role in meeting basic health care needs of the local communities in the Limpopo Province.

Demand for more safety and healthy natural plant products necessitated to study the role of seaweed concentrate (SWC) on Cassia angustifolia Vahl in enhancing the yield potential. The study clearly indicated that all the growth parameters namely, shoot and root length, number of leaves, leaf area, internode length, stem circumference, number of branches, fresh and dry weight of .plants increased when SWC were sprayed for 15 days after 20 days of growth. Among the five SWC used, Gracilaria corticata treated plants showed better results in all the growth parameters except shoot length which was higher in Padina pavonia treated plants. The maximum amount of total chlorophyll (1.53 mg/gFW) was recorded with the plants received foliar application of G. corticata followed by P. pavonia (1.29 mg/g FW), Sargassum wightii (0.942 mglg FW), Ulva lactuca (0.745 mglg FW) and Caulerpa scalpelliformis (0.68 mg/g FW). Highest amount of protein (49.6 mglg FW) and lipids (19.53 mg/g FW) were found in plants received SWC of P. pavonia. However, the amount of free amino acids (4.107 mglg FW) and carbohydrates (17.2 mg/g FW) were maximum in plants treated with the SWC of G. corticata. Plants treated with the SWC of U. lactuca showed more vitamin-C content (2.608 mg/g FW). The plants received SWC of P. pavonia had antioxidants in terms of total phenolics (114.6%) and flavonoids (108%) than control. The present study revealed that seaweed concentrates could be used as an eco-friendly, organic supplements to enhance the quality of C. angustifolia in cost-effective manner.

The present communication deals with the observations made on the medicinal plants used in ethnoveterinary practices by the rural people of Birbhum district of West Bengal. The economically backward village dwellers of the district still rely upon the herbal medicine mainly for curing the diseases and ailments of their domesticated animals. Information was gathered by interviewing different rural people with the help of semi-structured and open ended questioners. Before data collection Prior Informed Consent has been taken from the informants in oral as well written form to protect their intellectual property right. Consensus methodology has been used as statistical tool to identify most potentially effective medicinal plant species. Fic value ranges from 0.81 to 1, frequency of citation (%) ranges from 1.8 to 16.19. Altogether 40 plants were recorded which are used in preparations of 35 types of ethnoveterinary remedies for curing 22 types of diseases and ailments. These ethnomedicinal remedies are new as they have not been recorded in earlier literature. The data of this study have been presented in a tabular form providing the botanical name & family with field number, local/tribal name of the plants, parts used, name of the diseases, mode of administration and doses. This information may further be exploited scientifically to standardize new ethnoveterinary medicine.
