Scheme for monitoring and conserving the species of butterflies at 4-5 sites in Kanpur has been described with indices of abundance in different seasons. There are marked differences between the species in the scale of seasonal fluctuations. The species show correlation between successive index values e.g. the summer generation index of Pieris brassicae is highly correlated with the spring generation. The adverse climate is believed to have severely depressed the population of many species in cold winter. The data do not indicate any general fall in butterfly numbers over the period at the sites in the acheme. The sites are representative only for a number of species not for a whole.

Structure and function of the kidneys in teleosts vary with different modes of life in fresh and salt waters. Based on the cIassification of Ogawa (1961) the kidney of Pristolepis malabaricus belongs to the third type. This indicates that it is a highly advanced species. The kidney is divisible into a massive head kidney and an elongated trunk kidney. The head kidney has no excretory function. The trunk kidney is the main excretory part of the kidney, which is composed of nephrons. The latest studies on fish kidney by Liu et al (1998) has helped to identify the genes involved in nephrogenesis. This can be used in the development of renal replacement therapies in future.

Careful two yrs study was taken up on the seasonal surface castings of the earthworm Megascolex mauritii in the semiarid tropical grasslands I and II in Ranga Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh. The variation in the number of earthworm castings and burrows at the soil surface were related to seasonal changes in the temperature, rainfall and soil moisture were analysed by multiple regression analysis. Five quadrates of 25 x 25 cm being apart from each other by one meter were quantified for burrows. The correlation analysis of the burrows and casts of two alfisol grasslands with biotic factors rainfall and temperature had revealed a high positive and negative correlation, respectively. Rainfall and temperature regulates the moisture content in the soil and it has a direct relationship in the appearance of macropores on the surface of the soil.

The only option available at the moment is selective culling of matured females and fast growing ones that attain marketable size earlier. Often prawns are harvested at stage of maturity to gain maximum benefit of early market arrived. Maturity is the stage at which the prawn is capable of further development and reproduced next generation. Study on the maturity of freshwater prawn craps (scampi) culture indicates that about 141-150 mm size is appropriate, wich is achieved in about 5 months after initial release.

The aim of the study was to identify and quantify the haemocyte types in the larvae of Helicoverpa armigera Hubn. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Six haemocyte types were identified viz., Prohaemocyte (PR), Plasmatocyte (PL), Granulocyte (GR), Spherulocyte (SP), Oenocytoid (OE) and Vermicyte (VE). The total haemocyte count (THC) was found to be highest in the 3rd instar larvae (68256.9) and a gradual decrease of haemocytes was observed from the 4th to 5th instars. Differential haemocyte count showed a higher level of Granulocytes in 3rd, 4th and 5th instars. The Vermicytes were very few in number and Oenocytoids were observed only in the 5th instar.

When 20 fishes were introduced in field condition per dip larval density reduced to 17.38 and 11.39 after 30 and 45 days, respectively from an initial value of 26.78. The larval density increased up to 21.2 and 24.37 after 30 and 45 days, respectively after removal of fishes.

Nine species of hymenopterous ectoparasitoids were found parasitizing the shot-hole borer, Scolytus nitidus Schedl. (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) on apple trees in Kashmir. The parasitoids with average coefficient of dominance were: Macromesus harithus Narendran (Pteromalidae) (72.70%), Eurytoma morio Boheman (Eurytomidae) (9.73%), Spathius sp. Nees (Braconidae) (8.74%), Rhaphitelus maculatus Walker (Pteromalidae) (6.67%) and Cheiropachus quadrum Fabricius (Pteromalidae) (2.15%). Heydenia indica Buhroo (Pteromalidae), Eupelmus vindex Erdos (Eupelmidae), E. kasluniricus Buhroo (Eupelmidae) and E. valsus Narendran Eupelmidae) were occasional and arrived late in the development of their beetle host. The parasitization by M. harithus was the highest (52.88%) while the parnsitization by other common parasitoids ranged from 1.75 to 7.08. The parasitoid maximum population was observed during April - May and August - September. Field releases of M. harithus, Spathius sp., E. morio and C. quadrum made at Bandipora for the management of S. nitidus increased the parasitism from 14.8 to 45.3 per cent, while at Naseem Bagh the increase in parasitism ranged from 15.4 to 41.5 per cent indicating the establishment of parasitoids on shot-hole borer.

Trichogramma chilonis Ishii is an effective egg parasitoid for the management of several lepidopterous borer pests. With a view to improve its efficiency further, study was conducted on the influence of strain variability and kairomonal substances on its parasitization under multiple-choice assay using an 8-arm olfactometer. The results revealed that irrespective of treatment with kairomonal substances, highest mean parasitizution of Corcyra ceplialonicn (Stainton) eggs (21.5%) was done by strain collected from the sugarcane borers (Strain 15). Least mean parasitization was observed in eggs exposed to Strain 22. Among the five kairomonal substances tested, hexacosane (0.1%) induced highest mean egg parasitization. The interaction between T. chilonis strains and kairomones indicated that the combination of Strain 15 and hexacosane (0.1%) was most effective and registered highest egg parasitization (36.6%), followed by the combination of Strain 15 and tricosane (0.1%). The scope of selecting and utilizing the behaviorally responsive strains in combination with their effective kairomones for field release is discussed.

Male and female Tenagogonus fluviorum (Fabricius) were exposed to different size classes (I, II, III, IV and pupa) and different densities (25, 50, 75, 100, 125) of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae as prey. Predatory efficiency of the female bug is higher than that of male. However, both the sexes of the predator prefer large sized prey. The size in predatory performance of the bug is directly proportional to the increase in prey density. Attack rate and handling time as two statistical constants were derived from the prey death rate caused by the predator and their significance is discussed.

The new species T. ruficorpa is closely related to T. nana (Zehntner) by having its fore wings broad, about two times as long as wide and stigmal vein longer than premarginal vein. The former can easily be distinguished from the latter by having its antennae with club about four times as long as wide, ovipositor distinctly longer than hind tibia and ovipositor plate three times as long as wide; body colour reddish- brown.

Lake Egirdir is an important wetland for Turkey's biodiversity. This study was conducted during a period from July 1998 to July 1999 in Lake Egirdir and its limited vicinity and 130 bird species were observed. 28 natives, 28 winter migrants, 51 summer migrants and 10 transit migrants were observed. Aythya ferina. Fulica atra, Hirundo rustica and Passer domestics were found to be the most common in the lake. While Phalacrocorax pygmeus and Aythya nyroca were categorised as Near Threatened according to IUCN, the others were categorized as Least Concern. The lake is especially threatened by chemical substance use and over hunting.

During the 48th cruise of FORV Sagar Sampada an unusal abundance of calanoid copepods of Family pomellidae was observed in and around the Andaman Sea (Lat 60 30' - 60 59' N. Long 900 55' - 950 I5E). Swarm density (25974 to 1384203 Nos. m-3 formed of 91.9 to 98.1% of the total copepod population and constituted mainly by 4 species of Family pontellidae. The species, inorder of abundance, were Pontella spinipes, Pontellopsis regalis , Pontella. princeps and Pontella securifer. The adaptive significance of copepod swarming is briefly discussed.

Cultured two non-planktonic rotifers (L. inermis and L. patella) using four algal food densities (0.1 x 10⁶, 0.2x10⁶, 0.4 x 10⁶ and 0.8x 10⁶ cells mL¹ of Chlorella vulgaris). Under the tested food levels, L. inermis had long (about 15 days) lag phase, while L. rhomboides started to increase its population abundance from the 3rd day onwards. At low food density (0.1 x 10⁶ cells mL^-1) L. Inermis performed better, while at intermediate concentrations (0.2 x 10⁶ and 0.4 x 10⁶ cells mL^-1), L. rhomboidies grew to higher densities. The highest algal density resulted in reduced population growth of both the rotifer species. The rates of population increase (r) of L. inermis and L. rhomboides varied from 0.18 to 0.31 day^-1. For both the rotifer species the r was significantly affected by the algal concentration. When the daily rate of population increase was plotted as function of population density, a significant inverse relation was obtained for both the rotifer species. Results have been discussed to explain the differences in the relative abundances both the rotifer species in natural waterbodies with seasonally varying phytoplankton levels.

Eggs of Dysdercus cingulatus (Fab.) (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae) were treated with Pedalium murex Linn. (Pedalaceae) root ethanol extract along with neemgold and water to find out their ovicidal action and effect on ovipositional activities. Neemgold was more toxic to the eggs of D. cingulatus than P. murex root extract. P. murex treatment delayed the pre-mating period, period between mating and egg laying, ovipositional time, number of egg laid and hatching percentage, male and female adult longevity and adult weight compared to neemgold and control. Qualitative phytochemical analysis of P. murex root extract revealed that it contains steroids, terpenoids, phenol compounds, saponines, tannins and flavanoids.

Doxorubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic widely used in chemotherapy of many human cancers. The use of this drug however, continues to be limited by its dose-related and lime interval toxicity. Reactive oxygen species are hypothesized to be a major factor in the loxicity of doxorubicin. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of doxorubicin on dose-related and time interval in rat. The study utilized adult albino rats (120 ± 5 gm). They were divided into 8 groups of 7 animals each and were kept under standard laboratory conditions. They had free access to commercial pellet diet and water. The room temperature was maintained at 20 ± 5°C. The study on rat tissue carbohydrate and TCA cycle enzymes like Phosphalases, SDH, MDH, LDH under Dox stress. it is reported that long term use of Dox by disrupting the overall normal metabolism of the rat tissues, and this impart may lead to neurotoxicity, myocardial toxicity. hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in rat.

Two-year study on hierarchy in Hanuman langurs, (Semnopithecus entellus) around Jodhpur, Rajasthan (India) yielded some 300 hrs. of observation. Correlation among female age, social rank and resource utilization were investigated for last two years in free ranging and provisioned langurs, living in two one-male bisexual troops (i.e. B-18 and B-19) near Kailana lake of Jodhpur. Of total 392 displacement episodes, 22% occurred over natural food, 25% over provisioned food, 7% over grooming, 20% over position and shade and 24% for other reasons. To reconstruct a displacement hierarchy, there was a liner and stable rank over short periods but fluctuated according to the age composition of the troop, which resulting in an age inversed dominance structure. Young female occupied top ranks immediately they reach menarche (around 2.5 years of age) and gradually declined thereafter, with old females were being the lowest ranking individuals. The young females were observod-highly social and active while old females tended to be peripheral. The results reveal that the social rank more profoundly affected the resource utilization in langurs here. The pattern of social behaviour of high-ranking females differed markedly from those of low-ranking females. In general high-ranking individuals of any troop will have more accessibility to the resources.

Diurnal variation of zooplankton population of Chinnapperkovil pond of Sattur has been studied on 16 & 17 February 2001. A total of 36 zooplankton species were recorded, 20 of them belonging to Rotifera, 7 Cladocera, 6 Copepoda and 3 Ostracoda. The present study revealed that diurnal variation of zooplankton population was high peak at morning 08.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and evening 18.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs, whereas, low peak was recorded at midnight 24.00 hrs to 02.00 hrs. Physico chemical parameters were observed maximum values in day time (10.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs), whereas, minimum values in midnight (24.00 hrs to 02.00 hrs), showing their direct correlation with sunlight and algal biomass. Monostyla sp., Brachionus calyciflorus. B. quadridentata. B. forticula., B. angularis., B. falcatus., Keratella sp., Leydigia sp., Moinodaphnia sp., and Diaptomus species were predominant in this pond, which are considered as a biological indicators for eutrophication.

Food and feeding habit of Eutropiichthys vacha (Ham.) in the Ganga river have been widely studied. The principal food items in the gut content are vegetable matter, insects, crustaceans, fishes, molluscs and debris. Mucous is deposited on the inner layer of stomach in the form of thick layer. The Gastro-somatic Index (GSI) was recorded highest (4.11) in small size fishes and lowest (1.36) in large size fishes. The feeding intensity maxima was remarked during September (6.35, 6.19) and minimum during February (1.10, 1.03) in both respective years. There is positive co-relationship between feeding intensity and condition factor. From gut content analysis it is evident that fishes feed mostly at the bottom as well as surface of marginal water.

Different organic solvent extracts of Excoecaria agallocha leaf had shown antifeedant, oviposition deterrent and ovicidal activities against Spodoptera litura. Maximum antifeedant (73.08%), oviposition deterrent (83.71%) and ovicidal (65%) activities were observed at 5% treatment of hexane extract. Seven fractions were obtained from hexane extract through column chromatography. Among the seven fractions, fraction 7 showed promising antifeedant (81%), oviposition deterrent (80%) and ovicidal (77%) activity at 1000 ppm. E. agallocha could be used in IPM.

Animals were sacrificed at various intervals between 12 hrs to 28 days & bone marrow films were prepared for differential counting. A biphasic pattern of cell depletion was observed. The first phase was evident as early as 12 hrs post irradiation with a maximum reduction on day 3. After this there was a temporary recovery with an increase in all the cell types studied. The second phase of depletion was seen on day 17 after irradiation.

Platyplectrus yarensus differs from all other described species of Platyplectrus in very many characters.

Heavy metals are ingredients of liquid wastes discharged from a number of industries. The common metal found in industrial waste water is cadmium. Cadmium is of great concern since it is more toxic to aquatic organisms such as fish, crabs, molluscs, etc. The toxicity of cadmium to the crab Barytelphusa cunicularis 24h was tested according to the OECD (1992) guidelines No.203. 24h LC₅₀ of cadmium chloride (CdCl₂ 2 1/2H₂O) was found to be 7.7 ppm. Bioaccumulation of cadmium in gills, intestine, hepatopancreas and muscles of B. cunicularis was analysed using PC based AAS. The crabs were exposed to sublethal concentration (5 ppm) of cadmium chloride for 24h, 48h, 72h and 96h. The trend of degree of accumulation of cadmium in different tissues was as follows gills <60> Muscles <60> hepatopancreas <60> intestine.

Attempts to prove the dominance hierarchy of adult male Macaca mulatta determines all the sexual behaviours. For this, hypotheses were tested that (i) dominant male is primarily responsible for maintaining the proximity with adult female, (ii) high ranking males tend to groom the respective females more than the lower ranking males (iii) copulation rate and reproductive success rate in high ranking males are more than the low ranking males. Observations were made on free ranging commensal rhesus monkey in Aligarh district (lies between 27° 29' to 28° 11' north latitudes and 77° 29' to 78° 38' east longitudes) during 1993-1995. Study revealed that ranking of male was positively correlated with Hinde's index (Kendall's ι = 0.851, p = 0.009-high ranking male was primarily responsible for proximity maintenance), time spent on grooming (ι = 0.821, p = 0.013), grasping of female's hip (ι = 0.789, p = 0.018), mounting rate (ι = 0.651, p = 0.046), copulation (ι = 0.737, p=0.028) and reproductive success (rho=0.787, p=0.036) during 1993-94. Almost similar result was recorded during t994-95. The study advocates the hypothesis that there is relationship between male hierarchism and sexual behaviour such as time spent on grooming of female for solicitation, attempts made for mounting, copulation rate and reproductive success rate.

Knock-down resistance in Anopheles culicifacies based on region II of the para-type sodium channel gene was detected by PCR assay. Diagnostic PCR assay developed in Anopheles gambiae based on region II of the para-type sodium channel for detecting kdr resistance was optimized and tested for its utility in detecting DOT susceptible, heterozygous and resistant An. culicifacies mosquito population from Malkangiri area in Orissa, India. Four primers were utilized, among which two (Agdl and Agd2) were basically designed from region II of the para-type sodium channel gene of An. gambiae and the other two (AcAgd3 and AcAgd4) redesigned from the same region of An. culicifacies. The primer sets could amplify the fragments of 137 and 196 bp respectively, for homozygous susceptible and resistant genotypes and also heterozygous genotypes in An. culicifacies. Among An. culicifacies that survived DDT exposure, the homozygous and heterozygous resistance allele frequencies were 0.8 and 0.03 respectively. This assay was capable of determining kdr genotypes in a single mosquito at this locus and has potential in detecting kdr resistance among An. culicifacies populations.

Different life parameters of the Popilio demoleuson three host plants viz. lemon narangi and chakotm and one alternate host plants, i.e. bel under natural conditions. Highest apparent mortality of 33.71% was lecorded at early stage on chakotra. Generation survival function revealed that Chakotra was the most favorable host for overall survival of this insect. Maximum indispensable mortality (27.79) was encountered at early larval stage on chakotra as compared to other stages. Data for K-value exhibited the highest value (0.27) at early larval stage wile the lowest (0.12) was encountered at pre pupal and pupal stages, irrespective of host plant.

At 10 μg and 20 μg/body weight doses cholinesterase activity were enhanced in liver muscles after 30, 60 and 90 seconds intervals while in brain and heart muscles cholinesterase activity decreased after 10 μg and 20 μg/body weights ZnCl₂ treatment at 30, 60 and 90 second intervals respectively.

Socio-economic and physical surveys were conducted in eight Guji Oromo settlements in Nechisar plains, Nechisar National Park (NNP), southern Ethiopia during November 2001-April 2002 to assess human impact on the population of the plains zebra Equus quagga. Data collected since 1970 were also examined to indicate trends of human, livestock and plains zebra populations in the area. In 1980, the then military government forcefully evicted the local inhabitants. However, they returned to the area during the political change in 1991, which caused widespread destruction of the habitat and the wildlife in the area. The survey confirmed the presence of 250 households in eight settlements in the Nechisar plains, comprising 1640 people and 7080 heads of livestock. Cutting of grass and trees by local people has affected the population of plains zebra by decreasing the effective foraging area and cover. The population of plains zebra has declined since 1991, but there are signs of recovery in recent years. The current population of plains zebra in NNP was estimated to be around 4500. Active measures have to be implemented to control human utilization of Nechisar plains to prevent further deterioration of the habitat and to safeguard the future of plains zebra.

Fenvalerate induced complete sterility in either sex of mutant (Yellow) of Drosophila melanogaster when applied topically check to newly emerged flies at a dose of 0.007 ml/100 ml food. However, the recovery of fertility was recorded as the treatment days increased. In cross combinations, where either male or female or both were treated, egg laying was delayed by 8-17 days as compared to control. Recovery of fertility was faster in F₁ generation. Also, the flies treated at emergence, remained sterile for longer period than the flies treated at maturity. Percentage egg hatch and corrected sterility % in the flies treated at maturity for the first and subsequent three weeks and egg hatch % of successive egg batches in the flies treated on emergence showed that the F2 generation was more effective than F₁ generation.
