A field circuit model of the structure of the irregular coaxial resonator (ICR) based on microwave circuit theory is presented. All its circuit parameters are determined by the boundary-element method (BEM). Through this method, a complex three-dimensional electromagnetic problem is converted into two-dimensional electromagnetic and equivalent microwave circuit problems. Numerical results show good accuracy fit for engineering application. The procedure is general and can be used to analyze arbitrary irregular coaxial cavities also.

A simple method is proposed to design PID controllers for a series cascade control system. The method is based "on matching the coefficients of corresponding powers of q and q² in the numerator to α₁ and α₂ times that in the denominator of the closed loop transfer function model for a servo problem. This method can be used only when the inner and outer loop transfer functions are known. If these functions are not known, then an identification step needs to be carried out. The method is first applied to design a proportional (P) controller for the inner loop and then to a proportional plus integral (PI) controller for the outer loop. The performance of the proposed controllers is evaluated for an FOPTD model of the inner loop and outer loop process transfer function models. The response and robustness due to perturbation in model parameters are evaluated and compared with the methods of Krish naswamy and Rangaiah (When to use cascade control, Ind. Engng Chem. Res., 29, 2163-2166 (1990)) and Lee et al. (PID controller tuning to obtain closed loop response for cascade control scheme, Ind, Engng Chem. Res., 37, 1859-1865 (1998)). The proposed method gives better servo and regulatory performance.

In hard-switched converters, the switching frequency is limited by switching losses and EMI problems. However, high-switching frequency is necessary to reduce the converter size. Hence, soft switching is imperative at high switching frequency to obtain good efficiency. Push-pull converter is a preferred topology at medium power level. This paper proposes a novel resonant transition topology for push-pull converter. The proposed topology uses two additional switches and two diodes when compared to hard-switched push-pull converter. These extra switches introduce freewheeling in the primary circuit and thus enable loss-less switching. In classical push-pull converters, the transformer primary is left open during two sub-intervals in a period making the turn-on of the switch hard. The new circuit topology converts these open circuit intervals into freewheeling ones. With such a modification, all trapped energy in the core is conserved to achieve zero-voltage switching during the entire transition. Switch stress, control and small signal model are similar to hard-switched PWM converter. Idealized analysis and design methodology are explained for the push-pull converter. A prototype-300 kHz, 200 W push-pull converter validates the design method. Dynamic analysis of the push-pull converter is presented. The proposed topology can be extended to half-bridge converter also. Its circuit diagram is presented.

A method to image tissue phantoms using optical technology is demonstrated. The proposed method is based on polarization discrmination. This paper presents both experimental and Monte Carlo based simulation results for the backscattered images of a diffuse reflector object at varying depths illuminated by a linear polarized light beam. The numerical model is validated by experimental measurements using a tissue phantom consisting of 2.02 μm diameter polystyrene spheres suspended in deionised water. In this work, the problem related to scattering of light is solved by image-processing means. Results indicate that the propsed method improves the contrast of the subsurface tissue image up to a depth of 1 cm.

Intakes structures are commonly used for withdrawing water from river, reservoir and conveyance system of hydropower projects or for pumping stations. Formation of air-entraining vortices in from of intake is the result of complex interaction between many parameters and cause operational problems for turbine or pump and reduction of coefficient of discharge. Therefore, submergence provided at the intakes should be adequate to avoid air entraining vortices. The submergence provided in horizontal intakes of Nathpa Jhakri, Chamera and Tala hydroelectric power projects were studied by way of hydraulic models at the Central Water and Power Research Station, Pune. The criteria for safe submergence without air-entrainment suggested by various researchers were compared with the actual submergence provided in all the three projects. Few guidelines provided in the literature were fitting well with the model results whereas other guidelines including one, which is suggested by IAHR manual, appeared to be highly conservative.

Under the antituberculosis treatment (ATT) drug therapy, inclusion of a hepatoprotective drugs is not mandatory but in Indian scenario these are prescribed by most of the physicians. In present clinical trial three groups of patients receiving antituberculosis treatment have been studied to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of few Ayurvedic herbs. The first group of 10 patients was given capsules Liv-600 containing hydroalcoholic extract of Daruharidra (Berberis aristata) roots, Kakmachi (Solanum nigrum) whole plant, Ghritakumari (Aloe vera) ariel parts. Second Group was given a standardized decoction of herb Bhumyamalaki (Phyllanthus fraternus). Third group was kept on ATT and a placebo starch capsule for equal duration. The trial was conducted for 12 weeks from initiation of ATT and liver functions were periodically evaluated to assess the hepatoprotective effect of drugs under trial. At the end of trial, Group first and second exhibited their hepatoprotective efficiency over the placebo.

A study of the bank-line migration based on remote sensing data can play a very useful role in monitoring migration trends and characteristics, and can fruitfully supplement conventional surveying, which is otherwise very tedious, slow and time intensive. Application of ANN technique in conjunction with remote sensing data enables a rational assessment of the process of morphological change with regard to bank-line migration. This enables a better appreciation of the river bank-line migration both in time and space for palliative and preventive measures.

A 12 m high and 112 m long earthen dam was proposed to be constructed for augmenting surface water resources at Wellington, Coonoor district, Tamilnadu. For designing the foundation, the quality of sub surface formation was to be assessed and the geologically weak structures were to be delineated. As the topography of the area is not plane and also as thick lateritic formations are capping the deep-seated charnockite (bed rock), use of two different geophysical methods viz. Seismic Refraction and. Electrical Resistivity, was necessitated. The results of these two geophysical surveys have been integrated while characterizing the foundation. Two continuous seismic profiles along the proposed dam axis and four vertical electrical soundings in its reservoir bed were taken. The results revealed a four-layered stratum. The compressional wave velocities vary from 330 m/sec to 3345 in/sec and the resistivities from 22 ohm-m to 907 ohm-m. The low velocity and resistivity values (330 m/sec and 22 ohm-m respectively) are attributed to a loose and soft formation and their higher values (3345 m/sec and 907 ohm-m respectively) are attributed to a compact and hard formation. The depths of different geological layers obtained from these results were also co-related well with the borehole litho-logs. No geologically weak structures have been identified in the area by these investigations. The presence of compact formation and the absence of geologically weak structures at the site are favourable for founding the proposed structure.

Thermal power stations use pulverized coal as fuel. They produce enormous quantities of coal ash as a by-product of combustion. This calls for the development of strategies to encourage and establish technological concepts which will ensure consumption of fly ash in bulk. Among the various uses of fly ash, its bulk utilization is possible only in geotechnical engineering applications. This necessitates characterization of the fly ash with reference to geotechnical applications. This paper presents a review of such studies carried out. The results show that fly ash is a freely draining material with angle of internal friction of more than 30 degrees. The specific gravity is lower leading to lower unit weights resulting in lower earth pressures. It can be summarized that fly ash (with some modifications/additives, if required) can be effectively utilized in geotechnical applications.

The wave reflection characteristics of Parabolic (P), Parabolic Corrugated (PC) and Parabolic Corrugated and Perforated (PCP) wave absorbers were investigated using physical models. The profile of the parabolic absorber is Y² = 0.12 X. The investigations were carried out both wilh regular and random wave fields for a wide range of wave periods and heights. It is found that the coefficient of reflection, K_r varies from 0.30 to 0.90 for regular waves, when the relative water depth, d/L is decreased from 0.33 to 0.07. For the same range of relative water depths, for the case of random waves, K_r value varies from 0.23 to 0.45 only. Empirical equations are proposed to predict K_r by using Surf Similarity parameter, ξ and relative water depth, d/L as an independent parameter. The relative water depth, d/L is found to be better when compared to 'ξ' in predicting the wave reflection from parabolic absorbers. PCP type wave absorber is better by about 5% to 10% when compared to PC and P type wave absorber. All the three wave absorbers are about 5 times sensitive for change of wave period than change of wave height.

The model application is demonstrated with the case study of the command area of Distributary No. 36 of the Tunga Bhadra project. Processed data on crop areas for the case study has been obtained from earlier studies carried out by Regional Remote Sensing Service Center (RRSSC), Bangalore.

It is observed that the drag coefficient varies directly with contraction ratio and length-width ratio of piers. A laboratory experiment has been conducted to establish relation between absolute percent reflectance as measured by Exotech spectro-radiometer compatible to LANDSAT MSS and corresponding known sediment concentrations in a specially designed laboratory sedimentation tank under known illumination conditions. Sediment samples are collected from the bed load deposits of `Shivnath' reservoir of Durg District of Chhattisgarh State by using a bed load sample and are analysed in the laboratory for their particle size distribution. Sediment concentrations in the range of 75-1000 mg/l are used in the experiment. A multiple linear regression equation has been developed between absolute percent reflectance and sediment concentration of granular materials. The results indicate that diffused absolute reflectance from water volume increases with increased sediment concentration and separability between bands is higher at higher concentrations. Exotech band too provides significant response from suspended granular sediment concentrations. There is almost one to one correspondence between predicted (from the model) suspended sediment concentrations and actual concentrations with a coefficient of determination of 0.980 and a standard error of estimate of 45.37 mg/l. This may be due to the fact that most of the noise sources are nearly eliminated in the controlled laboratory experiment.

The current status and trends of the three ultra-small scale integrated circuit technologies, namely nanoscale CMOS, single- and molecular electronics are comprehensively reviewed. A comparative study is made, pointing out their relative pros and cons for nanoelectronic computing. Crucial aspects of MOS downscaling include, from the physical viewpoint, the infamous short-channel effect caused by drain induced barrier lowering (DIBL), the narrow width effect associated with small channel width, the combined small-geometry effect, and hot-carrier degradation; together with the conflicting requirements of shallow silicided junctions and low junction leakage; random doping fluctuations; ultrathin gate oxide reliability; polysilicon depletion effect; atomic scale roughness at the Si/SiO₂ interface; and high lithographic expenses, on the technological side. For sustaining growth in device density, a possible route for the microelectronics industry is to shift from the traditional field-effect transistor-based paradigm to one based on nanostructures. Single electronics has not been able to bear the envisaged fruits. While prospects of solo single-electron logic are murky, the concept of a mixed single-electron device/FET multi-valued logic and memory appears to be beneficial. But to achieve the ultimate performance, it may be expedient to transform the philosophy fundamentally to start from the molecular level, instead of scaling down old technologies to nanometer level. Molecular electronics appears to be the appropriate approach because the development cost of scaled technologies, and cost-effectiveness of resulting devices is not encouraging. The review seeks to provoke keen interest in these futuristic nanotechnologies.

Earth dams are constructed to store or divert water. They are economical because they are constructed with locally available materials. A homogeneous section in an earth dam is adopted for low to moderate heights. A purely homogeneous dam section poses the problem of seepage leading to sloughing and piping if it is not quite wide at base. An earth dam can be prevented from the seepage failure by providing the filters. A filter can keep the top flow line or phreatic line well within the body of dam. As the phreatic line follows a parabolic shape, there is some minimum length of downstream drainage filter to prevent the downstream slope from the softening due to seepage. Since earth dams are made of fine-grained soil, the softening may occur due to the capillary rise; hence an account for the capillary rise is necessary while calculating the minimum length of downstream drainage filter. Analytical solutions are not available for determining length of filter and downstream slope cover, though graphical solutions are available for them but they are long and involve personal skills and judgement. Explicit equations have been obtained in the present work for calculating downstream slope cover and length of downstream drainage filter. Similar equation has also been oblained for minimum effective length of drainage filter. These equations are non-linear and representative graphs have been plotted for them covering all the practical ranges of the dam geometry.
