In the study, dual-frequency slot-loaded rectangular microstrip antennas were designed, fabricated and evaluated. The design consists of rectangular patch microstrip antenna loaded with a pair of narrow slots parallel and close to the radiating edges on the patch, which is fed by centre-fed microstripline feed. Spacing of the slots was taken equally from both edges of the corners. The characteristics, like VSWR, return loss, input impedance, bandwidth, radiation pattern, HPBW, frequency ratio and gain were measured and analyzed for different spacings. Dual frequency operation has been achieved having low frequency ratio.

The paper presents the development of piezoelectric vibrating structure gyroscope. The vibrating structure used here is made of piezoelectric PZT-5J and cylindrical in shape. It has eight equally spaced positive electrodes on the outer side and one common negative electrode on the inner side. Two of the positive electrodes are used for excitation of the structure and two for detection. The excitation of structure is done at its resonance frequency providing maximum sensitivity. The performance of the developed piezoelectric gyroscope is tested with a microprocessor controlled turntable. Signal conditioning with automatic gain control (AGC) and results, for clockwise and anti-clockwise rotations for different rotation speeds, are discussed.

Pavement deflection data are often used to evaluate a pavement's structural condition non-destructively. It is essential not only to evaluate the structural integrity of an existing pavement but also to have accurate information on pavement surface condition in order to establish a reasonable pavement rehabilitation design system. Pavement layers are characterized by their elastic moduli estimated from surface deflections through backcalculation. Backcalculating the pavement layer moduli is a well-accepted procedure for the evaluation of the structural capacity of pavements. The ultimate aim of the backcalculation process from non-destructive testing (NDT) results is to estimate the pavement material properties. Using backcalculation analysis, flexible pavement layer thicknesses together with in-situ material properties can be backcalculated from the measured field data through appropriate analysis techniques. In the study, artificial neural networks (ANN) and gene expression programming (GEP) are used in backcalculating the pavement layer thickness from deflections measured on the surface of the flexible pavements. Experimental deflection data groups from NDT are used to show the capability of the ANN and GEP approaches in backcalculating the pavement layer thickness and compared each other. These approaches can be easily and realistically performed to solve the optimization problems which do not have a formulation or function about the solution.

The paper reports a theoretical investigation into the various aspects of an axisymmetric sintered compound flow problem of powder preforms which have been compacted and sintered from atomized metal powder. Many forging processes involve flow of preform in more than one direction. Die and process design require to determine the flow behaviour and the forging force. The analysis of a general axisymmetric problem is discussed and presented graphically here. In addition to the fundamental interest, it emphasizes the power of upper-bound analysis when applied to the prediction of compound sintered metal flow.

In the paper a general solution of the unsteady state laminar flow of a visco-elastic fluid of second order type between two parallel plates has been obtained, under usual assumption of no-slip condition at the boundary. The solution is obtained not by using any of the regular methods, but by employing the concepts of Duhamel theorem. The velocity profiles are found to be more steep and further, as time passes through, the profiles are significantly distributed. Further, as time elapses, the skin friction on the plates also increases. The applications are many and are of interest, as it approximates to the flows that are commonly encountered in technological and engineering practices.

Various empirical models have been suggested for the same. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are gaining importance in modelling of multivariable, non-linear relationship with high accuracy and even in presence of inadequate data. In study work multi layer perceptron (MLP) ANN with GDR based learning have been developed for estimation of liquid hold up and pressure drop for packed column. The ANN models thus developed are observed to be of good accuracy level, both for training and test data set.

The experimental result of microwave absorber with a single layer coating of ferrite and silicon carbide based paint for X-band is presented. Samples of M-type hexagonal ferrite powder [Ba(MnTi)₁₈Fe_8.4O₁₉] has been developed by dry attrition and sintering process. These developed ferrite powder and SiC powder have been mixed in epoxy resins to form a microwave absorbing paint. This paint was coated on aluminum sheet for absorption studies. The frequency selective surface (FSS) patterns are embedded on the surface of absorber sheet and tested experimentally at X-Band. It was found that SiC based microwave absorbing paint provide wide band absorption characteristics with minimum-absorption of 10 dB from 9.5 to 12 GHz for a coating thickness of 1.84 mm.

Phenol oxidation in aqueous solutions was carried out in a pH range of 7-12 using cyclic votlammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) studies on a glassy carbon electrode. Peak potentials are found to be distinct for each pH value. A linear relationship is observed between the peak current and the concentration ranging from micro- to milli-molar levels. The peak current is found to be proportional to the concentration of phenol up to 5 μM that allows determination of unknown concentrations of phenol down to 5 μM. Using DPV technique, the phenol concentration is detected up to a concentration of 0.5 μM.

Experiments were carried out to generate data on the cold upset forging of square and rectangular billets of annealed aluminum with different lubricants. The measured radius of curvature of the barrel was found to confirm with the calculated value. The calculations were made on the assumption that the curvature of the barrel followed the geometry of circular arc. It was further found that the measured radius of curvature of the barrel exhibited a straight-line relationship against the new geometrical shape factor irrespective of the shape of the non-circular solid billets. Further, empirical relations were found to exist between the measured radius of curvature of the barrel with other variables like hydrostatic stress and stress ratio parameter.

Draglines operate in a cyclic nature. Excluding the infrequent walking, a dragline spends its major operational time by digging the dirt and paying it out on a spoil pile. Considering the fact that a dragline performs tens of thousands of cycles per year, it is evident that even a small reduction in a single cycle time would result in a significant increase in productivity. Thus, it is to the benefit of a mine that dragline cycles need to be critically analyzed and corrective measures be taken. Although there exist different opinions on what segments constitute a dragline cycle, in this study it is accepted that a dragline cycle is composed of the following phases: (i) Filling the bucket by dragging it towards the dragline; (ii) Swinging the loaded bucket along a predetermined arc; (iii) Paying out the dirt onto a spoil pile; (iv) Swinging the empty bucket back to excavation face; and (v) Positioning the bucket to re-load. The study is based on field investigation conducted on six draglines with different capacities and operating modes. Stopwatch study is performed. Influence of cut dimensions, nature of material excavated, mode of digging, type of bucket employed, swing angle, operators' judgements and condition of dragline on cycle lime are analyzed. The results are presented by tabular data and illustrations.

Zeolitic tuffs, clays from the Istanbul area, rhyolitic-dasitic tuffs from Canakkale-Tepekoy area and feldspars from Cine area are used in the preparation of ceramic bodies. Clinoptilolite, quartz, feldspar, biotite and volcanic glass basically form the mineralogical composition of the tuff. Total alkali content of Zeolitic tuff is between 4 and 5 per cent but iron content is less than 1 per cent. In the ceramic body, instead of Canakkale tuffs, zeolitic tuffs are added with regular increment while the clays and other components stay in constant fractions. Fired colour parameters (L, a, b), dry and firing strength, water adsorption and firing shrinkage are measured. Thus the use of zeolitic tuffs was investigated in the fast fired ceramic bodies which are prepared by semi-dry pressing. Higher water absorption and lower shrinkage of Canakkale-Tepekoy rich bodies are explained by their coarse quartz content. The grain size and distribution of quartz content and inversion-conversion change influence physical properties of fired bodies. As firing shrinkage increases, water absorption decreases regularly by addition of more zeolitic tuff to ceramic bodies. In spite of lower Si content of Canakkale-Tepekoy tuff, the water absorption property is influenced differently by the Si content when it originates from quartz of Canakkale-Tepekoy or glassy phase of Demirci-Gordes zeolitic tuff. Therefore, chemical composition of the body is not the only factor to dictate the fired physical properties, such as water absorption and firing shrinkage.
