Experimental semivariogram is constructed with the use of measured elevations of the water table and spherical, exponential and gaussian semivariogram models are fitted to it. The finally selected gaussian model is used to develop contour map of groundwater table elevation and corresponding estimation variances. The estimation variances express the reliability of the kriged groundwater table elevation map. The kriged groundwater table map is compared with the groundwater table map prepared using the generally used inverse square distance method.

Eddy current non-destructive testing is used to inspect the critical aircraft components. The shortcomings of the inspection method identified, based on a few accidents, necessitate the development of high sensitive and reliable testing procedures for inspecting the critical safety related aircraft components. A dual-frequency eddy current testing procedure developed for inspection of compressor discs of aero engines for detecting fatigue cracks with high sensitivity and reliability has been discussed. This procedure is capable of detecting fatigue cracks smaller than 2 mm in comparison to 4 mm cracks that can be detected with the currently practiced eddy current testing procedure.

Belgaum City is one of the fast growing city in Karnataka due to its geographic location and pleasant climate. Due to acute shortage of water problem, the city corporation has started supplying groundwater from selected wells in the city. City uses about 10 mgd of water which include both surface and groundwater. By considering 20% loss, about 8 mgd of sewage is generated in the city. There are no sewage treatment plants and recycling facilities. It is learnt that there are problems of groundwater quality in certain parts of the city due to mixing of sewage water and groundwater. In the study an attempt has been made to identify the groundwater quality problems in Belgaum city. It is observed that, though most of the major anions and cations are within the permissible limits, there is a trend of deterioration (based on data on nitrate concentration from year 1995 to 2001) in various parts of the city. Therefore, the study stresses the need for taking up immediate steps to control the groundwater contamination.

The numerical technique used comprises cohesive elements sandwiched between the regular finite elements. The basic structure of the formulation is presented, followed by the results of the simulation. The success of this numerical technique is dependent on the cohesive model used. The cohesive model is a thermodynamically-based phenomenological model, describing the damage ahead of a crack tip. Details of the rate-independent cohesive model used in this study are also presented.

On the basis of water percolation losses, application efficiency, distribution efficiency, water use efficiency and area lost under bunds it was found that for 5, 10, 15 and 20 I/s flow rates, the check basin size should not be more than 100, 200, 300 and 300 m² respectively in loamy soil for 6 cm depth of irrigation in wheat crop.

The research system has been generating and recommending technologies, therefore, it was worth to assess the feasibility of recommended technologies as perceived by the personnel of research system first. Therefore, feasible technologies as perceived by the research system's personnel could be analysed for their feasibility in the farmers system. A conceptual model has been developed showing interrelationship between dependent variable, i.e. adoption-gap and independent variables like perceived technology needs, perceived appropriateness of technologies with respect to different parameters, different types of constraints, socio-personal, socio-economic, psychological and communicational variables. The feasibility of recommended water management technologies was tested after their documentation from different organisations working in the field of water management in the state of Orissa and West Bengal. Perception of twenty personnel of the research system regarding feasibility/viability of these technologies has been recorded and analysed. It was found that out of eighty-six documented recommended water management technologies, forty were having feasibility score of (4.0; eight technologies with score (3.0 and rest of the thirty-eight technologies with score in between 3.0 to 4.0 on a feasibility continuum ranges from 1.0 (not feasible) to 5.0 (highly feasible). Explanation for the non-feasibility/lower feasibility of technologies as perceived by the experts recorded.

Sabarmati basin is a water scare river basin characterized by competing demands for water. The water resources, consisting of both surface water and groundwater are used for meeting a variety of needs such as irrigated agriculture, urban and rural domestic uses, and industrial production, and ecology. The growing demand for water in the basin is met by indiscriminate drilling of wells and tube wells and surface reservoirs, leading to over-development of groundwater and over-appropriation of surface runoff. In the process, the hydrological and ecological integrity of water resources are severely threatened. Depleting groundwater levels and deteriorating quality and increasing river pollution manifest this. A water balance study was carried out to analyze the future water supplies and demand scenario for the period from 1996-2037. The study shows that if the current patterns of water use continue in the basin, the available supplies will fall short of the requirements by 3.016 bilion cubic metres. The groundwater storage was seen to reduce from 15.78 BCM to 1.98 BCM. Scenarios of water balance were generated to analyse the potential impact of different water management interventions. Comparison of these scenarios with the base case of water balance shows that the gap between supply and demand can be reduced by 2620 MCM with conjunctive management, end use conservation technologies in agriculture and volumetric pricing in urban water supplies. Even with increased groundwater abstraction, groundwater storage situation shows the highest improvement under this scenario from 15.78 BCM to 24.11 BCM.

The improvements have been made with regard to (i) Change in live storage capacity and elevation-area-capacity curve over the simulation period (ii) Storage capacity-power/irrigation withdrawal-reliability analysis (iii) Trade off analysis between power generation, irrigation withdrawal and reliability (iv) Consideration of tolerable deficit and seasonal irrigation reliability (v) Dividing irrigation command area into groups and staggering of crop calendar to reduce peak demand (vi) Consideration of variation in irrigation demand over the years and alternate irrigation development scenarios (area, cropping intensity( (vii) Consideration of variation in head loss, power plant efficiency and power generation in each turbine unit (viii) Variable net gain/loss of water from reservoir over the years due to randomness in rainfall (ix) Better approximation of average reservoir area and average reservoir elevation during a time interval. The suggested improvements have been formulated. Simulation algorithms showing input data and computational steps have been proposed. A case study of Batutegi multipurpose reservoir in Indonesia has been carried out and certain important conclusions with regard to installed capacity of power plant and design irrigation area have been derived.

Suratgarh Branch is a major command system of Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojna (IGNP). Water table in the Suratgarh command is continuously rising, which ultimately is leading to more and more area under waterlogging. Locations of waterlogged Chks of Suratgarh Branch are situated in bowl shaped low lying area. Due to waterlogging, number of villages have been deserted. Waterlogging not only results in depleted fresh water resources but also causes salinisation, health hazards, ground water contamination and adverse environmental effects. Keepking in mind the serious ill effects of waterlogging, a socio-economic survey has been conducted in six Chaks in waterloged command areas of the Suratgarh Branch. The survey revealed that the income of the farmers have increased after commencement of the canal, it reached to a maximum and then started to decline due to waterlogging. Medium size holding predominates in the surveyed area and 42.5% farmers have their area partially affected by waterlogging while 57.5% landholdings are wholly waterlogged among the surveyed farmers. Water balances have been calculated for al the six chaks for each year from 1996 to 1999 from the collected/calculated data of precipitation, evapotranspiration, and applied irrigation water. The study indicates that a little waterlogging is being caused by applied irrigation water. Waterlogging in the studied area may have been resulted mainly due to seepage from canals, return flow of irigation from higher irrigated fields and seepage from depressions situated in south of the command area and lack of natural drainage.

Underground water is an invaluable basic natural resource, which constitutes the physical basis of plant growth. Three hundred and fourteen water samples of working tubewells from twelve blocks of south-western region of Punjab were analysed. Out of these, only 17.5 per cent samples were found fit for irrigation, 35 per cent of the samples were marginal in quality. Rests of the samples were of poor quality. The composition of the tubewell water revealed dominance of Na⁺ among the cations in all the samples, which varied from 0.2 to 56.0 me/l. among the anions Cl has dominance over others. The concentration of (Ca⁺⁺⁺ Mg⁺⁺) in the water ranged between 0.8-93.0 me/l. the chloride concentration in the water samples varied from 0.2-88.8 me/l. and of (CO₃^-+HCO₃^-) between 0.1-27.2 me/l.

The experimental data for a 40-bladed soft-inplane hingeless main rotor is used to validate a comprehensive aeroelastic analysis. A finite element model has been developed for the rotor blade whith predicts rotating frequencies quite well, across a range of rotation speeds. The helicopter is trimmed and the predicted trim-control angles are found to be in the rnge of measured values for a varitey of flight speeds. Power predictions over a range of forward speeds also compare well. The aeroelastic analysis is used to study the importance of aerodynamic models on the vibration prediction. Unsteady aerodynamics and free-wake models have been investigated.

Non-reacting flow analysis of a gas turbine combustion system have been described. The method is based on the solution of Navier-Strokes equations using generalised non-orthogonal coordinate system. The turbulence effects are modelled through the renormalisation group k-ε model. The method has been applied to a practival gas turbine combustor. The combustion system includes swirler vane passages, fuel nozzles, rotor bleed, customer bleed, air-blast atomiser, swirl cone, and all holes in primary, dilution, rotor bleed, customer bleed, air-blast atomiser, swirl cone, and all holes in primary, dilution, dome, flare, and cooling ring. The total geometry has been created using the pre-processors GAMBIT and CATIA, and the meshing has been done using GAMBIT, and the analysis carried out in a FLUENT slover. The interaction between the diffuser and the combustor external flows plays a key role in controlling the pressure loss, air flow distribution around the combustor liner, durability, and stability. The aero gas turbine combustor designs are generally guided by experimental methods and past experience; however, experimental methods are inherently slow, costly, especially at high temperature engine-operating conditions. These drawbacks and the growing need to understand the complex flow-field phenomenon involved, have led to the development of a numerical model for predicting flow in the gas turbine combustor. These models are used to optimise the design of the combustor and its subcomponents, and reduce cost, time, and the number of experiments.
