A flow control based model is proposed for the automatic control of small hydro power plants. In the proposed model, a servomotor is used to control the flow of mater by controlling the rotational motion of the spear valve. The spear valve causes a 'continuous' control of the flow of water. "Discrete' flow control is achieved by the use of a butterfly gate which is activated by a dc motor. The suitability of servomotors for the control of small hydro power plants is discussed and PI controllers art used to further enhance their governing capability. State space representation is used to mathematically model the proposed model. Extensive simulations are performed to analyse the behaviour of the proposed model. Parameter optimization is performed using Artificial Neural Networks.

Four high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels with varying chemical compositions were forged in two different temperature ranges followed by cooling in various media. Microstructures and mechanical properties of the steels were evaluated. The microstructures obtained in water-quenched low-carbon HSLA steels were lath martensite packet within the pancaked grains. On air or sand cooling predominantly bainitic ferrite or granular bainite structure forms. The strength properties of these steels decreased with decrease in cooling rate and is accompanied by an increase in elongation and impact toughness values. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of HSLA-100 grade steel was found to be - 40 °C. The impact fracture surface of air cooled HSLA-100 steel showed ductile failure with formation of dimples at 20 °C and at - 20 °C. The fracture mode changed to brittle failure with formation of cleavage and river pattern at - 40 °C and at - 60 °C. The microstructures of the ultra-low carbon HSLA steel show lath ferrite or granular ferrite in water-quenched condition. With slower cooling rate, the volume fraction of lath ferrite decreased with an increase in formation of polygonal ferrite. The maximum strength value obtained in air-cooled condition is achieved due to precipitation of fine microalloying carbides and carbonitrides. Slower cooling rate increases the volume fraction of polygonal ferrite which increases the toughness value.

Numerical modelling of turbulent-reacting flow field of supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) combustors are presented. The developed numerical procedure is based on the implicit treatment of chemical source terms by preconditioning and solved along with unstedy turbulent Navier-Stokes equations explicitly. Reaction is modelled using an eight-step hydrogen-air chemistry. Code is validated against a standard wall jet experimental data and is successfully used to model the turbulent-reacting flow field resulting due to the combustion of hydrogen injected from diamond-shaped strut and also in the wake region of wedge-shaped strut placed in the heated supersonic airstream. The analysis could demonstrate the effect of interaction of oblique shock wave with a supersonic stream of hydrogen in its (fuel-air) mixing and reaction for strut-based scramjet combustors.

Deals with the mixing of iron and silicon by swift heavy ions in high-energy range. The thin film was deposited on a n-Si (111) substrate at 10-6 torr and at room temperature. Irradiations were undertaken at room temperature using 120 MeV Au+9 ions at the Fe/Si interface to investigate ion beam mixing at various doses: 5 x 1012 and 5 x 1013 ions/cm2. Formation of different phases of iron-silicide has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, which shows enhancement of intermixing and silicide formation as a result of irradiation. I-V measurements for both pristine and irradiated samples have been carried out at room temperature, series resistance and barrier heights for both as deposited and irradiated samples were extracted. The barrier height was found to vary from 0.73-0.54 eV. The series resistance varied from 102.04-38.61 kΩ.

In Zn-Bi and Al-Bi systems, both of which belong to monotectic class, dispersion of second phase particles within the matrix have been produced through rapid solidification processing (RSP) route. In order to understand relative catalytic efficiencies of Zn and Al matrices in catalyzing nucleation of Bi particles entrapped in the respective metal matrices, thermal analysis in constant program mode was performed. Thermal analyses revealed that Bi undercools by 132° in Zn matrix and by 157° in Al matrix. Thermodynamic barrier to nucleation (Δ G*) for Bi has also been calculated, which is 39.8 kcal/mole and 47.085 kcal/mole, in Zn and Al matrices, respectively at the maximum recorded undercoolings.

A generalized computer program has been developed to determine the reliability indices.

Five different types of micro sprinklers (coded for identification as MS-1, MS-11, MS-111, MS-IV and MS- V) were evaluated at various microsprinkler spacing (3 m x 3 m, 4 m x 4 m, 5 m x 5 m, 6 m x 6 m, 7 m x 7 m and 8 mx 8 m, 9 mx 9 mand 10 m x 10m) and operating pressures (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 kg/cm2). The depth distribution data obtained from the experiment was analysed for Christiansen's Uniformity Coefficient (UCC) and Merrium and Keller Distribution Uniformity (DU). At the rated pressure (2 kg/cm2), the maximum value of UCC (94.74%) was recorded for MS- V at 3 m x 3 m microsprinkler spacing followed by MS-III (92.5%), MS 11 (92.06%), MS- I (91.0 1%) and MS- IV (87.52%) at the same pressure and spacing. More than desired value (70%) of UCC was reported only for MS-I for all pressures under consideration and for spacings 3 m x 3 m to 7 m x 7 m which indicates its superiority over other types of microsprinklers. A fairly good value of DU (78.00%) was recorded at all pressures and at 3 m x 3 m and 4 m x 4 m spacing for all the microsprinklers except MS-IV At rated pressure, the DU values recorded for MS- I, MS- II, MS-III, MS- IV and MS- V were 91.47,96.90,92.61, 91.35 and 96.75%, respectively.

Performance analysis of switched diversity system operations in wireless fading environment using discrete time model is presented. The fading channels are modelled as frequency non selective slow Rician fading channels, corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Two branch switched diversity receiver is considered with independent diversity branches. The probability density function (pdf) of the resultant signal to noise ratio (SNR) associated with each bit at the output of switched diversity combiner is derived. The bit error rate (BER) expression for non coherent frequency shift keying (NCFSK) under switched diversity is obtained and analyzed. The numerical results are plotted as average BER against average SNR per bit for various values of Rician parameter K in order to examine the performance with the change in the fading depth. The results are compared with the BER results of NCFSK for no diversity. Closed form expression that can be used for numerical computation of optimum adaptive switching threshold is also derived. The results presented are general enough so that they include AWGN and Rayleigh fading as special cases. The analytical results presented are expected to provide a convenient tool for design and analysis of a radio system in fading environment under diversity reception.

Being an important parameter, Prandtl number (NPr) plays a pivotal role in the field of convective-beat transfer. The calculation of Prandtl number for liquids at various operating temperatures is a damnting task. To reduce the work load and save valuable time, the Prandtl number values at available temperatures for 50 most commonly used liquids are calculated and are correlated as a function of temperature and the characteristic constants for each liquid are tabulated. By substituting the constants, the Prandtl number at any temperature within the given temperature range can he calculated easily and quickly. The average percentage derivations (maximum deviation of 2.678%) in the calculated NPr values of the liquids from those of experimental values are also given.

Both modes of operation of DCM and CCM of SEPIC converter is compared from point of view of steady state and dynamic behaviour, power quality, simplicity, control technique, device rating and converter size. Voltage follower approach is carried out in DCM, while for CCM operation, average current control technique is used. It is observed that CCM is most suitable for higher power applications in which it requires little complex control and sensing the additional variables. A prototype of single phase PFC based ac-dc SEPIC converter is developed and simulated results are validated with test results.

In this way a total of 250 heaters in the fatigue loop are grouped into eleven groups. This paper presents the way each group is individually studied and control methodology is also reviewed.

Proposes a new method to solve the problem of optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) using particle swarm optimization (PSO). The objective of the proposed method is to minimize the system active power loss. The control variables are generator bus voltages, transformer tap positions and switchable shunt capacitor banks. The proposed method has been applied to practical Ward Hale 6-bus system and IEEE 30-bus system. The optimal reactive power dispatch was solved by traditional and non-traditional methods. The proposed approach is much simpler than these methods. The results obtained by using the PSO method are compared with the genetic algorithm (GA) for Ward Hale 6-bus system and evolutionary programming (EP) for IEEE 30-bus system in terms of solution quality.

Deals with the experiments conducted to obtain pressure drop in a squared gas-solid fluidized bed under varying conditions. The flow rate, the initial static bed height, particle size and density have been altered and the bed pressure drops under fluidized conditions have been measured. The data has been correlated in terms of Euler Number. Correlations, relating Euler Number with the system parameters have been developed for the unpromoted bed and beds with rod and disc promoters. Developed correlations have been authenticated by an ANN model. The values of Euler Number, thus predicted, as well as the bed pressure drop values calculated there of have been compared with the experimental values and have been found to agree fairly well.

Attempts to demonstrate the solution of non-convex economic load dispatch (ELD) problems by taking into consideration of consumer load pattern variations through a hybrid intelligent technique, which is a combination of the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) and improved fast evolutionary programming (IFEP) technique. In the proposed approach, an evolutionary based search algorithm is used to achieve global optimum ELD solution and an auto configuring ANN approach is adopted to obtain fast solution. This hybrid technique is tested on the IEEE 6-bus system with several heuristic load patterns. It has been observed that the trained network successfully gives the results almost instantonaneously with sufficient accuracy for the unknown load patterns. This powerful and versatile feature of the proposed method may be quite befitting for real time implementation of the ELD in an energy management system without any restrictions on the natural of the cost curves.

More than 50% of the failures in power electronic circuits are due to thermal breakdown of the active device. Thermal breakdown occurs when the junction temperature reaches close to 175°C. Thermal analysis is of immense use, not only for finding the optimum power handling capacity of the given heat sink but can also be used for designing the heat sink for the required power dissipation. In this paper, thermal modelling of the power transistor using Ansys ® software with the actual practical set up with the heat sinks is analyzed. The simulation is also used to determine temperature of transistor case, which is used to predict junction temperature. This will help to maintain the transistor from not entering the second breakdown and confirm the safe operation of power transistors. The experimental and the simulation results are compared to support the modelling procedure.

Presents a new approach to solve the short-term unit commitment problem using an evolutionary programming based simulated annealing method with cooling and banking constraints. The objective of this paper is to find the generation scheduling, such that, the total operating cost can be minimized, when subjected to a variety of constraints. In evolutionary programming, the unit commitment schedule is coded as a string of symbols and SA improves the status. The best population is selected by evolutionary strategy. A thermal power station in India demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach; extensive studies have also been performed for different IEEE power systems consist of 10, 26 and 34 generating units. Numerical results are shown comparing the cost solutions and computation time obtained by using the evolutionary programming method and other conventional methods like dynamic programming, Legrangian relaxation and simulated annealing in reaching proper unit commitment.

Blast furnace slag is the waste produced in Visweshwaraiah Iron and Steel Plant, Bhadravathi (about 12 km from the place of work carried out). The industry is producing huge quantity of blast furnace slag. The authorities are finding it extremely difficult to dispose the waste efficiently and economically. Construction industry is one of the areas, which has potential to use effluents from industries. The influence of water absorption on blast furnace slag concentrate is investigated. Blast furnace slag is obtained from Visweshwaraiah Iron and Steel dravathi. The specimens prepared by replacing cement with different percentages of blast furnace slag and cured for 28 day were tested for their water absorptions values. The results are compared with plain concrete specimens. The results of the experimental study indicate that incorporation of blast furnace slag in place of cement in concrete increases the resistance to water absorption.

Novel model for reducing noise from electro cardio gram (ECG) using alpha-trim mean filter in wavelet domain has been proposed. It uses alpha-trim mean filter, which selects the threshold value for shrinkage function. The a -trim mean filter offers variable thresholding that optimizes the value for each sub band. The empirical wavelet coefficients at every sub band level are filtered and the mean square error (MSE) is minimized by least mean squared (LMS) algorithm. It is shown that the proposed model can perform better than running mean and median filters in Gaussian noise suppression. It finds its applications in noise removal and data compression in medicine and communication sector.

Acetylation involves reaction between hydroxyl group present in cellulosic structure and acetic anhydride. Acetylation is expected to reduce the hydrogen bond density between hydroxyl groups, increase water-repelling properties and enhance paper-making characteristics. The experimental acetylation procedure using dimethyl formamide (DMF) solvent and related calculation has been described. The reaction monitored by determination of hydroxyl value at regular reaction intervals. The observation and paper making characteristics have been reported. The idea is to determine the kinetics by using integral method of analysis and examine effect of acetylation on paper making characteristics. The acetylation reaction is carried out at a room temperature 30°C. The time for the reaction varies between 5 b and 8 b which depends on the hydroxyl value of acetylated pulp. The product is centrifuged, dried in a dryer or oven and dry acetylated pulp flakes are used for papermaking. The acetyl content of acetylated bagasse, bamboo and waste paper pulp are estimated and found to contain 5.26%, 4.96% and 5.11%, respectively. Characterization of acetylated pulp is conducted and hydroxyl values an determined at regular interval. Considerable reduction in hydroxyl value with time is observed using bagasse pulp, bamboo pulp and wastepaper pulp. As per hydroxyl value obtained, bagasse pulp acetylation equilibrium is established after 8 h and low hydroxyl value is found. In case of bamboo pulp highest hydroxyl value, equilibrium is established after 6 h and has waste paper pulp observed intermediate hydroxyl value and equilibrium extablished after 7 h. The first order rate constant, for bagasse pulp, bamboo pulp and waste paper pulp are 0.17 h-1, 0.188 h-1 and 0.196 h-1, respectively. The changes in properties of paper after acetylation have been visualized. The acetylation does not bring any change in weight per unit area of pulp as indicated by GMS value. Acetylated waste paper pulp and bagasse pulp do not exhibit change in burst factor at 80 GSM. Acetylation bamboo pulp exhibites 33% increase in burst factor. The effect of acetylation on tear force, tear factor and tearing strength of pulp is found to be remarkable. At lower degree of acetylation, the enhancement in tear factor is very high. With further acetylation, the tear factor increase is small and at further increase in degree of acetylation, tear strength decreases. The folding endurance of acetylated bamboo pulp is found to be excellent (almost 100% increase).

A powerful software has been written to acquire on line data, to calibrate and to interpret/display it on PC monitor. For ozone generating equipment in various advanced oxidation-based treatment applications in chemical engineering, controlled quantities of ozone have to be produced. A new and better method of ozone contact with the treatment fluid is evolved and is referred to as the 'in-situ' ozonator. Methods of construction of such ozone reactors have been summarized. Such a method makes it possible to utilize the transient but high energy distribution components of the ozone formed in the corona discharge tube. Experiments illustrating the 'efficacy of this method are also presented. Additionally, for generating a required ozonation effect, the ozone reactor's high voltage input is controlled by a Fuzzy logic controller. The various parameters which normally affect the ozone production, such as, temperature, input dew point and flow rates are measured and used to effect a rule-based fuzzy control. A hardware fuzzy logic controller (NLX230) if implemented. It adjusts the high voltage high frequency pulse output that feeds the corona generating extra high tension transformer. The frequency employed is 15 kHz which is quite safe with no shock risk unlike 50 Hz high voltage ozone generators. Units have been built which can give a production of I g-50 g of ozone per hour.

New, simplified method for studying the plate reactive distillation column (RDC) has been proposed in this study which couples the approximate method with rigorous matrix method. In the approximate method, calculations were performed assuming a non reacting mixture to get different parameter values required for matrix method. Subsequently, the reaction terms were incorporated in the rigorous solution. The mathematical model and corresponding computational algorithms were presented in this study and a series of simulations for a reactive distillation tray column were performed. The homogeneous liquid phase reversible reaction between acetic acid and ethyl alcohol in production of ethyl acetate was taken as case study in this analysis. The key components in a pertaining reaction mixture were decided based on Shiraz-Hanson-Gibson (SHG) equation. Hengstebeck method was employed for determination of distribution of components in the distillate and bottoms. Minimum reflux ratio was calculated by Underwood's method and ultimately the compositions and temperatures at each stage were obtained by iterative technique, employing matrix method. Experimental data for the specific reaction concerned were obtained using pilot scale plate column with intermediate probe for temperature measurement and sample collection. Though it is a simple model, derived under several assumptions, the simulated data shows a very good fit when compared with the experimental data.

Countercurrent bubble columns as floatation columns have recently been applied to froth separation of minerals. One of the most important features of a floatation column is the water stream applied at the top of the column for the purpose of washing, which entrained the non-floatable particles from the floatable bubble particle aggregate, consequently permitting high upgradation in a single separation stage. When gases flow through an annular and non-annular floatation column at constant rate, the gas spends more or less than the average residence time in the column. This spreading of residence time can have an important effect on the performance of the column. The objective of the work is to develop a scale-up methodology for this type of floatation columns. Experiments were carried out to study the reisdence time distribution (RTD) in an annular and non annular floatation column, as function of different slurry and gas flow rates. Pulse response was studied with flame photometer measurements and were used to measure RTD characteristics, and a dimensionless mixing parameters L/[N(Do - Di)] and L/[N(Dc)] were used as a measure of approach to plug flow for both annular and non annular columns, respectively. The information would be useful to design and scale up of the floatation column that behave like stirred tanks in series or approach plug flow system.

The program was compiled and run, the switching signals were interfaced, and the chopper drive was run successfully. The minimum hardware requirement for the control circuit leads it to a more reliable system. A user friendly control room method has been adopted using the keyboard for smooth speed control of the motor and also for the forward reverse, regenerative braking and emergency stop operations.

The experimental data of bed pressure drop collected with the system variables viz. initial static bed heights, bed material of different sizes and densities and different promoter blockage volume have been used in the investigation. The predicted values of packed bed pressure drop using modified proposed equations for the two cases were compared with those of corresponding experimental ones. A conclusion has also ben derived for the effect of promoter parameter on packed bed pressure drops.

The proposed design under test (DUT) is intended to make available a 16-bit processor driving an universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) on an FPGA chip to demonstrate the design of ASIP. The application specific instruction processor contains a structural model integrating all the requisite components at lower level into an ASIP at the higher level. The paper focuses on design methodology based on tools and techniques to capture the design, simulate it at several levels abstraction, and to implement it through synthesis, thus making it easy to develop a hardware prototype. Once evaluated, it is easier to change the design at the VHDL level and then resynthesize it to ensure that the design meets the required specifications. The highest lignin biodegradation observed with trametes versicolor and Lentinus crinitus were 49.37% (w/w) and 54.40% (w/w) of wheat straw respectively. The optimum time of lignin biodegradation was 20 days and 24 days for Trametes versicolor and Lentinus crinitus respectively. The optimum temperature of lignin biodegradation was 35°C and the optimum pH and 5.5 for both types of fungi for the studies. 30% (v/v) and 7 days age old inoculum culture were used.

The analysis is aimed to predict thermal transients in the network in case of any fluctuation of inlet temperature of hot or cold stream. Mathematical model equations are developed to describe the transient heat exchange between the process streams. A finite difference nunmerical scheme and solution algorithm is developed to solve the set of model equations. Tthe results show the nature of thermal dynamics in the heat exchanging streams owing to sinusoidal and periodic square wave variation of the inlet temperature. The investigation gives an idea about the relative interaction between the different fluid streams and the identificantion of the process streams, which are more susceptible to inlet temperature change for the test network configurations. Possible points for temperature control in heat exchange networks, considered for test cases, are suggested.
