Seven different rootstocks were taken and horticulturally superior scion Avtar was used as scion. The grafted seedlings were transplanted in a randomized block design having three replications. The rootstocks used significantly affected the yield as well as quality of the tomato. The brinjal rootstock VI034845 recorded maximum number of fruits (35.66), fruit yield (2.14kg), plant height (205.66 cm), highest ascorbic acid (31.25 mg/100gf), TSS (6.23% and pericarp thickness (4.16mm).

A study on morphometric relationship of Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) was conducted on the fish specimens followed by estimation of water quality and qualitative assessment of plankton community in a fish farm of Tarai region of Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. The descriptive statistical parameters and correlation coefficient (r) were analysed with independent variable (total length) and dependent variable (other morphometric parameters). The result shows that morphometric parameters are significantly correlated to total length except caudal length. The maximum correlation coefficient of average total length was obtained with fork length having a value of 0.992 and minimum with caudal length with value of 0.323. The average values of Temperature (°C), pH, TDS (mgl-1), DO (mgl-1), CO2 (mgl-1) were 27.2, 7.5, 287, 6.0 and 1 respectively. The qualitative analysis of the community resulted in 6 and 2 species of phytoplankton and zooplankton respectively. Water quality parameters and diversity of plankton community revealed the conducive environment of the water body.

A field experiment on production potential of rice-fodder potential cropping sequence under various rice cultivation methods was conducted. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with four methods of rice cultivation i. e. conventional method (M1), SRI-raised bed method (M2), SRI-flat bed method (M3) and aerobic (M4). Rice was cultivated in main plot in kharif season and three fodder crops i. e. oat, berseem and lathyrus after rice in rabi season in sub-plot with three replications. In kharif season taller rice plant and maximum tillers/m2 (397.7) were observed in SRI-raised bed, respectively; which were at par with height and tiller number (381.7/m2) recorded in SRI-flat bed system. Number of grains/panicle and panicle length (153.13 and 26.6 cm, respectively) recorded from SRI-raised bed were the highest and were significantly at par with that of SRI-flat bed (148.8 and 26.5 cm, respectively). SRI-raised bed registered maximum 1000-grain weight, grain yield and straw yield (24.43 g, 4.67 and 5.69 t/ha) and were statistically at par with SRI-flat bed (24.23 g, 4.175 and 5.455 - 316 - t/ha, respectively).

A study was conducted at All India Coordinated Rice Improvement Project, RRTTS, Chiplima, Sambalpur, Odisha to find out a few popular cultivars and donor lines resistant to sheath blight pathogen both under field and laboratory conditions. Out of eighteen popular varieties of Odisha screened against sheath blight under field condition, three varieties (Tejaswini, Pratikshya and Mrunalini) were categorized as moderately resistant. Most of the varieties screened were either moderately susceptible (five varieties) or susceptible (six varieties). Four varieties were designated as highly susceptible. None of the entry in the present study was recorded as immune or resistant. The three cultivars (Tejaswini, Pratikshya and Mrunalini) graded as moderately resistant after field screening gave same result under in vitro conditions also confirming them as moderately resistant to sheath blight pathogen, Rhizoctonia solani. Thirty four donor entries were simultaneously screened against sheath blight pathogen after artificial inoculation under field condition. Among them, three donor entries DRR- BL-257-2, DRR-BL-295-1 and DRR-BL-295-2 showed good results consecutively for two years of screening and were considered to be moderately resistant to the disease. Five donor lines were graded as moderately susceptible, nine lines exhibited susceptible reactions to the disease while 17 donor lines were graded as highly susceptible to the disease. None of the lines screened was found highly resistant or immune to Rhizoctonia solani. The three cultivars which were found moderately resistant to the disease will be beneficial to the farmers in sheath blight endemic areas to reduce the extent of crop damage as well as yield loss. The three donor lines identified as moderately resistant will be helpful in resistant breeding programme.

A field experiment was conducted at Experimental Farm of Afghanistan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University (ANASTU), Kandahar, Afghanistan during April-June, 2015 to work-out the grain yield and resource-use efficiency of mungbean varieties viz. Mai-2008, Mash-2008, NM-94, NM-98 and local cultivar 'Kunduzy' under semi-arid conditions of Kandahar. The results indicated that Mash-2008 exhibited significantly highest grain yield while Kunduzy exhibited minimum seed yield. The Mash-2008 yielded 5.0, 34.9, 34.5 and 48% more yield as compared to Mai-2008, NM-98, NM-94 and 'Kunduzy', respectively. The mungbean genotypes showed significant differences for total water-use efficiency (TWUE), irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE) and economic water productivity (WPE). Mash-2008 exhibited highest TWUE (9.9 kg ha-1 mm-1), IWUE (10.6 kg ha-1 mm-1) and WPE (644 AFN ha-1 mm-1) while 'Kunduzy' recorded minimum TWUE (6.7 kg ha-1 mm-1), IWUE (7.2 kg ha-1 mm-1) and WPE (434 AFN ha-1 mm-1). Overall, Mash-2008 outperformed in terms of grain yield, production-efficiency, monetary-efficiency, total water-use efficiency (TWUE), irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE) and economic water productivity (WPE) over other mungbean cultivars in semi-arid conditions of Afghanistan.

Field experiment was conducted at Central Research Station, OUAT, Bhubaneswar during rabi, 2013-14 to find out the response of various weed control treatments on nutrient uptake and yield of wheat. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design comprised of twelve treatments viz. Pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ha-1 and metribuzin @ 0.3 kg ha-1, metsulfuron @0.02 kg ha-1, pendimethalin + one HW at 25 DAS, pendimethalin +2, 4-D EE @0.5 kg ha-1, metsulfuron + one HW at 25 DAS, metsulfuron + 2 3, 4-D EE @ 0.5 kg ha-1 at 25 DAS, pendimethalin + metsulfuron, metribuzin + metsulfuron, 2, 4-D @ -.5 kg ha-1 at 25 DAS and two hand weeding at 25 and 45 DAS were compared with unweeded control. The wheat variety Kalyansona was taken for the purpose. The uninterrupted growth of weeds in unweeded control permitted the weeds to take up the maximum 23.19 kg N, 5.73 kg P and 28.20 kg K ha-1. Application of pendimethalin + one hand weeding to wheat crop removed the greater amount of N, P and K of 79.94, 9.06, 48.87 kg ha-1 respectively. The unrestricted growth of weeds enabled the lowest depletion of nutrients by crop (47.68 kg N, 6.93 kg P and 27.22 kg K ha-1). All the weed control treatments increased significantly the grain and straw yield over the unweeded control. Pre-emergence application of pendimethalin @ 1 kg ha-1 + one hand weeding produced the highest grain (2784 kg ha-1) and straw (2734 kg ha-1). Harvest index was also found to be maximum with the treatment. Maximum reduction in grain yield to the extent of 38.33 per cent was found in unweeded control.

Adjustments in sowing dates in correlation to abiotic factors, assessed for expansion of aphidophagy by predators (Coccinellids, Syrphids) and parasitoides, to achieve within-season mortality of aphids infesting mustard, revealed that the crop seeded during mid October 20th and late November 10th harboured higher number of predators (3.31coccinellids, 2.20 syrphid fly) and parasitoids (8.60 mummified aphids) per plant. The elevated population of natural enemy complex could be attributed to its positive correlation with maximum, minimum and mean relative humidity. The augmented count of parasitoids was credited to the positive association of parasitoid population with maximum, minimum and mean temperature. The results of abiotic relationship with the population build up of natural enemies of aphid could be highly informative for achieving the expected produce of mustard crop sown even late in the season.

Roving survey carried out in citrus canker affected acid lime growing areas of Vijayapur and Bagalkot districts showed that the acid lime leaves were more vulnerable to the disease attack than the fruits, irrespective of locations. Among the two districts surveyed, maximum disease intensity on leaf and fruit was recorded in Bagalkot district and the lowest in Vijayapur district. The disease severity on fruits differed with that of incidence indicating that the acid lime in Vijayapur district suffered slightly more than the Bagalkot district. Taluk wise incidence and severity of the disease registered maximum disease severity on leaf and fruit in Indi taluk of Vijayapur district. On the contrary, Basavana Bagewadi taluk of Vijayapur district recorded the minimum disease intensity and incidence on leaf and fruit.

Field experiment on effect of different age and number of seedlings on dry matter partitioning and yield of maching-transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L.) was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Gangavathi, University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, Karnataka during kharif 2012 and 2013 in clay soil. Pooled mean of two years indicated that planting of 25 days old seedlings recorded significantly higher dry matter production at - 313 - harvest in leaves (14.17 g/plant), stem (27.38 g/plant), panicle (38.95 g/plant) and total dry matter production at harvest (80.10 g/plant), grain and straw yield (5101 and 6335 kg/ha, respectively), gross and net returns (Rs. 91,141 and 45,178/ha, respectively) and benefit : cost ratio of 2.01. Similarly, among the number of seedlings/hill and planting of three to four seedlings/hill recorded significantly higher dry matter production at harvest in leaves (14.62 g/plant), stem (29.59 g/plant), panicle (41.35 g/plant) and total dry matter production at harvest (85.55 g/plant), grain and straw yield (5330 and 6585 kg/ha, respectively), gross and net returns (Rs. 95,190 and 49,165/ha, respectively) and benefit : cost ratio 2.10.

For the present research work BC1 and BC2 population of cross IS 18551 and AKSV- 13R used where as back cross population derived from a cross between IS18551 (resistant to shoot fly) and AKSV -13R (susceptible to shoot fly). Using data of different shoot fly resistant component trait are used to introgress the shoot fly tolerance trait in Sorghum. By keeping background characters of AKSV-13R and resistant character for shoot fly from IS 18551.

Mango is one of the most important perennial fruit crops of hot humid region of eastern India. It is cultivated on a large area in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhatishgarh and Bihar and contributes significantly in total mango production of the country. Uplands in these regions mainly includes the plateau land with Gondwana rocks/ murrum formation in sub soil and the hillocks up to 40-50 m height with fragmented stones and a bit friable sub soil are barren. Such areas constitute roughly 35-40 % of the total area in this region which awaits interventions to make them green and yellow with plantation of fruit species. Mango does well in these areas but needs irrigation and intensive care for the establishment of nursery raised saplings. In situ method has been found successful for establishment of orchards in disadvantageous areas and this method could be utilized for mango too. Owing to variations in rootstocks and influence of external factors, in situ raised mango plant - 312 - exhibits variation in growth during initial years. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyse the growth behaviour of in situ raised as well as nursery raised plants at Central Horticultural Experiment Station, Bhubneswar with Amrapali and Arka Neelachal Kesri varieties of mango. The results reveal that the in situ raised plant gave 90.85% successes in Arka Neelachal Kesri where as nursery raised plant gave 99.63% success rate after three years. Amrapali gave 96.25% success under in situ conditions. In Arka Neelachal Kesri 51.95 % plants produced less than 10 cm2 trunk cross sectional area (TCA) under in situ conditions where as more than 70 % plants produced 30-60 cm2 TCA in nursery raised plants. Also, 47.25 % plants produced 10-20 cm2 TCA above graft union in Amrapali under in situ condition. With respect to canopy area (m2), 43.75 % in situ raised Amrapali plants produced canopy area of 1-2 m2 where as in Arka Neelachal Kesri 40.04 % plants produced less than 1 m2 canopy area and 32.92 % plants produced 1-2 m2 canopy area. Other growth characters like canopy volume (m3), number of primary, secondary and tertiary branches were also recorded and compared with in situ raised mango plants of Arka Neelachal Kesri and Amrapali with nursery raised plants. The detailed data on various growth parameters have been presented.

Field experiments were conducted for the management of leafhopper (Amrasca biguttulla biguttulla Ishida) through farmer's participatory approach in Supaul district of Bihar during summer season of 2008 to 2010. The data of survey conducted during summer season 2008 showed that monocrotophos 36 WSC @ 1-1.5 1/ha was most frequently used by the farmers (77.0%) which did not control the pest at desired level and gave B: C ratio 1.69: 1. The result of on-farm trial (OFT) conducted during summer season of 2009 and 2010 showed that seed treatment with imidacloprid 70 WS and thiomethoxam 25 WG @ 2 g/kg significantly reduced leafhopper population. The impact of foliar spray of monocrotophos 36 WSC was significantly low. The highest yield (108.60 q/ha) was obtained from imidacloprid 70 WS seed treated fields followed by thiomethoxam 25 WG seed treated fields (107.80 q/ha) which were significantly superior over the farmers' practice of foliar spray of monocrotophos 36 WSC (82.93 q/ha) which fetched low yield. The maximum gross returns, net returns and B: C ratio were obtained from imidacloprid 70 WS treated fields which were Rs. 162900.00/ha, Rs. 97376.00/ha and 2.49: 1, respectively. Similar trend and slighty less gross returns, net returns and B: C ratio were obtained from thiomethoxam 25 WG seed treated fields. The lowest performance of fanners' practice with foliar spray of monocrotophos 36 WSC was due to low efficacy against leafhopper in okra. Large scale demonstrations were conducted during summer season of 2010 among farmers of seven villages in Supaul, Bihar for the dissemination of insecticidal seed treatments clearly indicated that seed treatment with imidacloprid 70 WS @ 2 g/kg seed or thiomethoxam 25 WG @ 2 g/kg seed gave significant reduction of leafhopper in okra for 42-45 days. The impact of technological intervention changed the mind set of neighbouring fanners. The results encouraged the farmers to save their crops from the menace of leafhopper.

In India Colletotrichum gloeosporioides cause anthracnose disease of many horticultural crops, including grapes. Carbendazim resistance in the pathogen is commonly observed. Eighty-seven endophytic bacteria were isolated from mature shoots of Thompson Seedless variety located at ICAR-National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune and screened for their antagonistic activity. Ten bacteria inhibited the radial growth of carbendazim resistant C. gloeosporioides isolates by 77.59-84.59 per cent in dual culture assay. Four of these bacteria completely prevented anthracnose infections in detached leaf bio-assay and were subsequently evaluated at 104,105,106 CFU/ml on field grown vines. Vines treated with bacteria TS-31, TS-45 and TS-46 recorded low disease severity even at the lowest concentration of 104 CFU/ml and area under disease progress curve (AUPDC) were 456.31, 355.31, and 446.25, respectively; while in fungicide control and untreated control AUDPC was 435.19 and 756.88. In detached berries, TS-45 showed almost complete control of berry infection (2.38±4.12%), while TS-46 (20.39±3.33) and TS-31 (35.46±32.65) were less effective. These three promising bio-control bacteria were identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens based on morphological, biochemical and molecular characterization.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2015 to evaluate yield attributes and yield on pearl millet+mungbean intercropping systems in arid region of Rajasthan. The experiment comprising 12 treatments viz., Sole HHB-67, Sole RHB-177, Sole RMG-62, Sole SML-668, HHB-67+RMG-62 (1: 1), HHB-67+RMG-62 (1: 2), HHB-67+SML-668 (1: 1), HHB-67+SML-668 (1: 2), RHB-177+RMG-62 (1: 1), RHB-177+RMG-62 (1: 2), RHB-177+SML-668 (1: 1), RHB-177+SML-668 (1:2) was laid out in randomized block design with four replications. The results showed that number of effective tillers and earhead length of pearl millet at harvest were recorded significantly higher in RHB-177+SML-668 (1: 2) row ratio. There was no significant effect of different treatments on test weight of pearl millet and mungbean. Significantly higher grain yield and harvest index of pearl millet were recorded in sole RHB-177, while in intercropping treatments RHB-177+SML-668 in row ratio 1: 1 recorded higher grain yield, however, stover and biological yields were recorded highest in RHB-177+RMG-62 in row ratio 1:1. Sole mungbean SML-668 among all treatments recorded significantly higher number of pods/plant, seeds/pod, grain, straw and biological yield, while in intercropping, treatments RHB-177+SML-668 in row ratio 1:2 recorded higher seed yield and harvest index of mungbean, however, straw and biological yields were recorded in HHB-67+SML-668 in row ratio 1 : 2.

A field survey was carried out for vegetables in three sub-zobas of zoba Anseba, Eritrea. The farmers were interviewed with the objectives of the types of cultivation and management practices, diseases and pests attacking the vegetable crops and the education level of farmers and understanding management practices. In sub-zoba Hagaz, about 62.50 per cent farmers were using the locally available seed and 37.50 per cent used seed stored from previous crop. In Adi-Tekeliezan only 34.88 per cent used their own seed, whereas 65.51 per cent of farmers buy from market, which could be a reason for low disease severity and infestations. In Hamelmalo, 64.51 per cent and 61.29 per cent of growers used the seed from their previous crops and purchased from market, respectively. Potato varieties Ageba, Sudan White, Red and Yemani; tomato variety Sumberson and okra variety Bloctihona were the major seed sources used by most of the farmers. About 51.72 per cent of farmers use irrigation in Adi-Tekeliezan and the rest of 49.27 per cent depend on rainfed cultivation. Farmers invariably do hand weeding and on an average three weedings are done in a cropping season, whereas in Wazantet and Zeron it was for 5-6 times. In sub-zoba Hamelmalo, many farmers (19.35%), sun-dry their seeds before growing seedlings. The application of cow dung ash or pure wood ash on the seed is also practiced by 58.06, 89.65 and 81.25 per cent of the farmers in sub-zobas Hamelmalo, Adi-Tekeliezan and Hagaz, respectively. Tuta absoluta, african boll worm, whitefly, Helicoverpa and aphids are major pests on tomato, cucumber, cabbage and chillies; Jassids, potato tuber moths and whitefly were of potato; thrips of onion; aphids and whitefly of okra, chilies, egg plant and pepper in all the three zobas. Alternaria blights reported on potato, tomato, okra and chilies from all the three sub zobas; powdery mildews in chilies and okra noticed from medium to high intensity; viral disease mosaic in cucumber and okra; dieback diseases observed on onion in the fields of Hagaz. Though, some educated farmers use few pesticides, others do not have proper education and awareness for the use of the chemicals.

The survey was conducted and focused on disease incidence, severity and infestation of insect pests on vegetable crops grown during the cropping season in three sub zobas of Hamelmalo, Hagaz and Adi-Tekeliezan of Zoba Anseba in Eritrea. During the survey 100 subsistence farmers were selected randomly for interview using structured questionnaires. The main vegetables grown in the three sub zobas were tomato, potato, chilli, egg plant, okra, onion, zucchini and carrot. Samples of the vegatables (plants and fruits) were brought to the laboratory for identification of disease and insect pests. The major vegetable diseases observed during the - 309 - cropping season were early blight, powdery mildew, late blight, leaf curl virus and blossom end rot on tomato, downy mildews and purple blotch on onion, wilt, anthracnose, late blight, collar rot and scab on potato. Leaf minor, fruit borer, whitefly, African boll worm, aphids, cutworm, potato tuber moth, spider mites, jassids, less wing bug and thrips were observed as the major insect pests. Wherever the insect pests occurred, there was also incidence of leaf curl disease because of the transmitted viruses. Leaf curl virus and powdery mildews appeared in tomato and chilli; collar rot in potato; powdery mildews in zucchini and carrot almost in all villages where the crops are grown. On the other hand, percentage of severity prevailed due to whiteflies and infestation by fruit borer and aphids and registered in all grown crops of sub-zoba Hamelmalo. Tomato and okra showed low to medium percentage of disease severity. Powdery mildew was recorded medium to high in Hagaz and low to high in Derotay,

Mahua flower is one of the most important non-timber forest produce (NTFP) in Jharkhand state, but, major part of mahua flower production (80 to 90%) is misused in the making and sale of unhealthy alcoholic liquor in Jharkhand state, just for quick and more earnings. As per collected information from the tribals, previously the same mahua flowers were consumed by tribals and others as mahua laddu also. But now-a-days, it is not in practice, because it has many drawbacks (look, shelf life, nutritive and sensory value etc.). Therefore, an on farm trial (OFT) was conducted to prepare mahua laddu scientifically with the objective to overcome all drawbacks of traditional mahua laddu and for healthy utilization of mahua flowers in place of harmful liquor. Three options were tried in OFT, each with 8 replications. In first option, as farmers' practice (FP), mahua laddu prepared with traditional method and second and third options were scientific methods i.e. Technological Option I (TO I) and Technological Option II (TO II). Mahua laddus were prepared with scientific method by using local resources and local facilities of rural areas. After developing technology for laddus, their nutritive value was estimated and sensory evaluations (of six parameters) were done through score card method. The economics were also calculated. The result revealed that mahua laddus prepared by TO II was richest in many nutrients among the three options. This mahua laddus were with protein (19.44 g), carbohydrate (135.38 g), energy (135.38 Kcal) and calcium (63.74 mg). The overall acceptability on the date of preparation of FP, TO I and TO II were 6.87, 7.77 and 8.75 respectively. So, it was clear that mahua laddu of TO II was liked most by farm women and others. After calculation, it was found that the cost of mahua laddu (per kg) of FP, TO I and TO II were 32.40, 60.00 and 58.00 rupees respectively. When, shelf life of mahua laddus were studied, it was found that mahua laddus of TO I and TO II had shelf life of 5 weeks from the date of preparation, whereas mahua laddus of FP had shelf life hardly of 1 week only. Traditional mahua laddus (of FP) was found on third position in the studied parameters (nutritive value, shelf life and sensory evaluation), except for economic point of view. Thus, the scientific mahua laddus (TO II) were popularized through the demonstration in many block level and district level kisan melas, exhibitions and through distribution of leaflets and handout written in Hindi among farmers and other persons, who visited kisan mela stall in bokaro and in other parts of Jharkhand state and the response was very encouraging.

Community radio caters the need of farming community. The present research study was conducted in Chikbyalikatti and Mangalakatti village revealed that, the agriculture programme viz., Varadabasanna, Krishi chintana, Avishkaragalu were the more prefered by the listeners. The listeners felt there was lack of clarity in the programme and problem of power cut. A good number of listeners suggested to enhance the coverage area and broadcast adoptable technologies.

The study was carried out to examine the Krishi community radio listeners perception about the farm broadcast and also to learn the impact on knowledge level of the listeners. The modern farm technologies evolved by scientists has tremendously helped the farmers to increase the farm production, still the big educated and innovative farmers were able to get the maximum benefits of new technology. The present study conducted in two villages of Dharwad district which is covered by KCRS Dharwad. The study revealed that the KCRS listeners were middle aged (30.00%), had about upto middle school (25.00%), medium extension participation and innovativeness. The listeners 37.50 per cent belonged to most favourale perception, majority felt that programmes were easy to follow and understand (67.50%) and more interest to listen my voice and neighbors voice in the radio (59.20%), majority of respondents has total knowledge index score of 68.18 for Jola and a score of 57.57 for maize was obtained in case of broadcasted dramatized programmes.

The study was conducted in Belgaum district of North Karnataka as there are large numbers of farmers practicing the - 307 - organic cultivation of vegetables. 30 farmers each practicing organic cultivation of tomato and chilli and 30 farmers each practicing non-organic cultivation of tomato and chilli spread over the district of Belgaum were selected randomly for the study. The collected data were analysed using tabular presentation method and Garrett ranking technique. The study revealed that, majority of the sample farmers expressed increasing return from organic vegetables as the reason for shifting over to organic cultivation of vegetables from non-organic cultivation. The estimated per acre cost of cultivation of tomato and chilli on organic farms was high as compared to non-organic farms whereas, the net returns was high in the case of organic farms as compared to non-organic farms. The major problems faced by the sample farmers were non-availability of labour and high commission charges.

Recently the use of biocontrol agents in place of hazardous chemicals is gaining importance for managing pathogens and promoting plant growth. Phenolics are large group of antimicrobial compounds that act as signaling molecules in plant defense mechanisms after induction of induced systemic resistance (ISR) as well as in plant-microbe symbiosis. They also play important role in plant growth promotion and nodule morphogenesis. So, it is imperative to estimate the total phenol content (TPC) in microbe-treated plants. Current study focus on the effects of Bradyrhizobium spp, Pseudomonas spp. And Glomus spp. In pigeonpea plants for enhanced plant growth and phenol production after their separate application. Bradyrhizobium spp. Were tested for nodulation in pigeonpea plants through sterilized soil in pots. Growth promotion study was performed after seed bio-priming of pigeonpea in sterilized soil in pots under net house condition. Total phenol content (TPC) was produced maximally in plants treated with G. mossae (LGC-4). There was growth promoting effects of bio-agents on different growth parameters were variable but in all cases enhanced growth promotion was observed as compared to the healthy control plants.

Field experiments were carried out to study the effect of sulfur and boron on yield of mustard (Brassica juncea L.) and its nutrient uptake in acidic soils of Odisha during rabi seasons in the coastal ecosystem during 2011 and 2012. The treatments are combination of four levels of sulfur (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg) and four levels of boron (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kg). The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with factorial arrangement consisting of sixteen treatments each with three replications. The crop receiving sulfur @ 60 kg/ha recorded significantly highest seed yield (1208 kg/ha), stalk yield (2739 kg/ha) and HI of 30.7%, which were 23.5%, 20.0% and 30.7% higher than that of control with @ 20 kg/ha, respectively, but at par with 40 kg S/ha. Boron application @ 1.5 kg/ha registered the highest uptake of N (59.4 kg/ha), P (11.6 kg/ha), K (61.3 kg/ha), S (25.9 kg/ha) and B (228.7 g/ha) were recorded with sulfur application @ 60 kg/ha. Application of boron @ 1.5 kg/ha significantly registered the highest uptake of N (58.1 kg/ha), P (11.5 kg/ha), K (62.1 kg/ha), S (24.7 kg) and B (221.9 g/ha) over control and 1.0 kg boron/ha.

The present investigation was carried out to examine the role of exogenously applied ascorbic acid which mitigates the deleterious effects of salt stress in mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) genotype HUM-1. Plants grown under induced salinity stress at 150 mM NaCl were treated with different concentration of ascorbic acid, i.e., 0.5 mM, 1.0 mM and 2.0 mM. To study the effects of treatments of salt stress on chlorophyll content, proline content, nitrate reductase activity, superoxide dismutase activity and yield attributes data were recorded at 20, 40, 60 day after sowing. Nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyll content with 1.0 mM ascorbic acid under salinity (150 mM NaCl) while the activities of superoxide dismutase get reduced up to 43.71% at 40 days after sowing. In plant treated with combined treatment of 150 mM NaCl and 1.0 mM foliar applied ascorbic acid caused a decline in the level of proline, which was 3.38 mg, 3.35 mg and 6.30 mg at 20, 40 and 60 days after sowing. The threshold level of ascorbic acid was 150 mM NaCl along with 1.0 mM ascorbic acid, that improved the yield attributes under salinity. Ascorbic acid inhibits the adverse effect of NaCl for growth and development of plants. So ascorbic acid may be a promising treatment to ameliorate the deleterious effects of salt stress in crops.

Areca triandra and Areca concinna, wild relatives of cultivated arecanut, Areca catechu L., are possible candidates to develop disease resistant inter-specific hybrids of arecanut, particularly against Phytophthora meadii, which causes fruit rot of arecanut. Inter-specific hybrids often results in premature embryo abortion and fruit fall. A protocol to extract and culture of immature embryos, thus, is of immense significance. Maturation stage of the zygotic embryo and composition of culture media can influence the efficiency of protocol for raising plantlets in vitro. In this study, immature embryos (four months old) were extracted from nuts of A. triandra and A. concinna under sterile conditions were cultured onto four different basal media viz., Y3, MS, B5 and White. All basal media were supplemented with 0.1% charcoal. Germination of the zygotic embryos was found to be initiated after three weeks of culturing. Germination percentage was more in A. triandra as compared to A. concinna. Y3 medium was found to be the best basal medium as indicated by higher germination both in A. triandra and A. concinna.

Severity of infestation by collar feeding insect pest (Agrotis ipsilon) on was recorded at different locations ranging from plains to higher belts of districts Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora during the cropping season 2011 and 2012. Cutworm was noted as the collar feeding insect pest that cut the stem of potato crop near the base. Severity percentage of cutworm was recorded highest in May at Pattan, Kunzer (Baramulla), Yonus (Kupwara) and Sumbal (Bandipora) and highest in June at Yarikhah (Baramulla), Handwara, Budnambal (Kupwara) and Ajas (Bandipora). However, at Gurez (Bandipora), the pest severity was noted high in July during 2011 and 2012. During the year 2011, the mean severity of cutworm was recorded highest 5.00 at Sumbal (Bandipora), whereas 3.00 per cent as lowest at Yarikhah (Baramulla) and Budnambal (Kupwara). However, during 2012 the highest severity percentage of 6.25 was recorded at Pattan (Baramulla) and Sumbal (Bandipora), while lowest - 305 - percentage of severity 4.00 was recorded at Budnambal (Kupwara). Pooled mean severity of cutworm was recorded highest (5.26%) at Sumbal (Bandipora) followed by Pattan (Baramulla) 5.00 per cent, while lowest percentage of severity 3.50 was recorded at Budnambal (Kupwara).

Forty surface soil samples were collected from Gharsana tehsil of Sriganganagar district. The pH value of soil ranged from 7.5 to 9.67 with a mean value of 8.74 indicating that the soils were, in general, alkaline in reaction. The EC, O. C., CaCO3 and CEC ranged from 0.04 to 0.87 dS/m, 0.07 to 0.29%, 2.80 to 6.40% and 5.40 to 11.42 cmol. (p+)/kg with the mean value of 0.53 dS/m, 0.17%, 4.61% and 8.16 cmol. (p+)/kg, respectively. The minimum and maximum value of available Zn, Fe, Cu and Mn was re0orded from 0.29 to 0.60, 1.50 to 4.40, 0.02 to 0.40 and 5.36 to 6.00 ppm. Available micronutrients showed significantly positive correlation with organic carbon and CEC. Overall 100 and 97.5% samples were deficient in available iron, zinc and copper content, respectively, but 100% samples were sufficient in available manganese in Gharsana tehsil.

A field experiment was conducted at Research Farm of CCS Haryana Agricultural University Rice Research Station, Kaul (Kaithal) during kharif season to study response of date of transplanting on phenology, growth, grain yield and economics of basmati rice (Oryza sativa) varieties. The treatments consisted of three dates of transplanting (June 25, July 10 and July 25) and four varieties (Taraori Basmati, CSR 30, Pusa Basmati 1 and Pusa Sugandha 4) laid out in split-plot design with four replications, keeping transplanting dates in main plots and varieties in sub-plots. The - 304 - studies revealed that basmati rice should be transplanted up to July 10 in order to get higher grain yield. Early transplanting (June 25) attained flowering and maturity earlier by 16 and 14 days, respectively, than late transplanting (July 25). Early transplanting (June 25 and July 10) significantly increased all the crop growth parameters viz., plant height, tillers/m2, dry matter accumulation and leaf area index over the late transplanting (July 25). The grain yield, net profit and benefit: cost ratio were higher with early transplanting dates as compared to late planting. Among the varieties, tall varieties (Taraori Basmati and CSR-30) took longer time to attain 50% flowering and maturity than semi-dwarf varieties. The semi-dwarf varieties produced more tillers/m2 than taller ones but reverse was true for dry matter accumulation and leaf area index. Pusa Sugandha 4 was found best as it gave the highest grain yield, net income, benefit: cost ratio than all other varieties.

Dry matter partitioning, yield and HI of late sown wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were investigated under different levels of irrigation and nitrogen. Experiment was carried out at the Research Farm of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar during rabi seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12. The experiment consisting of three irrigation levels viz., one irrigation at CRI, two irrigations at CRI and heading and four irrigations at CRI, late tillering, heading and milking in main plots and five nitrogen levels viz., control i. e. 0 kg N/ha, 50 kg N/ha, 100 kg N/ha, recommended dose of nitrogen i. e. 150 kg N/ha and 200 kg N/ha in sub-plots was laid out in strip plot design with four replications. Results of experiment revealed that percent contribution of different plant parts i. e. leaves, stem and earhead increased with the advancement of crop age except leaves and stem, which declined after 90 DAS during both the years. The per cent contribution of stem remained around 50% up to 90 DAS and then declined drastically till maturity. The increased level of irrigation increased the dry matter accumulation in leaves and earhead significantly at all the growth stages. Increased level of nitrogen dose increased the partitioning in favour of leaves at all the growth stages. Absolute dry matter accumulation in earhead at maturity increased significantly with increase in nitrogen dose up to 100 kg N/ha in 2010-11 and 150 kg N/ha during 2011-12. Dry matter accumulation increased significantly with increased levels of irrigation and nitrogen. The maximum grain yield and HI were obtained with four irrigations which was significantly higher than one and two irrigations. Increase in nitrogen dose increased the grain yield and HI significantly up to 150 kg N/ha.

Farmers' tolerance towards wild animals are affected by a variety of factorsand understanding those factors influencing low tolerance among people is essential for designing strategies to alleviate livestock owners-wildlife conflict.Conflict between human and wildlife are reported to be increasing over the time that leads to negative consequencescause low tolerance towards wild animalsin local communities. In this context, aLikert's scale was developed to measure the farmers'tolerance towards conflict between wildlife and livestock. A list of 30 positive and negative (60:40) statements were prepared which indicated the tolerance of farmers and irrelevant statements were discarded. Remaining 17 statements were sent to the - 303 - 50 judges who were the experts in the field of livestock or wildlife and requested to rate on five point continuum. On the basis of total individual scores of judges, the top 25 per cent judges with the highest scores and bottom 25 per cent judges with lowest total scores were consideredfor the study. On the basis of calculated 't' values, 10 statements (8 positive and 2 negative) were retained for the final scale and this scale could be used to measure livestock owners' tolerance beyond the study area with suitable modifications.

For the registration of a new variety or protection of a variety, it has to comply with the requirements of distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS). Special field trials are conducted to verify whether a variety differs distinctly from other varieties of the same species, whether it is uniform and stable enough. Testing of DUS assures that this is a new variety distinct from other already existing varieties and that the users will grow a variety with uniform properties, which will keep them unchanged in the propagation generations that will follow. Since in all the countries the same methods of DUS testing are used in accordance with recommendations of Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), the results are compatible. If DUS testing is successful, a detailed morphological description of variety is made. DUS testing tells very little or nothing about the cultivation value of a variety. Technical DUS testing usually takes two growing cycles. A growing cycle is the time the test takes to observe all the characteristics which are required for the DUS test. The final report usually follows after the second growing cycle. Test fees will be charged for each growing cycle. The design of the growing trial or other tests, with regard to aspects such as the number of growing cycles, layout of the trial, number of plants to be examined and method of observation, is largely determined by the nature of the variety to be examined.

In order to determine the yield gap of the common wheat cultivars in Ardabil region, an experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications in Ardabil Islamic Azad University Agricultural Research Station in two agricultural years of 2014-15 and 2015-16. The studied cultivars included Pishgam, Gaskogen, Gaspard, Siosson and MV 17. In order to evaluate the actual yield, 30 farms from three different locations (from villages of Namin County and Ardabil) were chosen and during two agricultural years of 2014-15 and 2015-16, all management factors were completed and collected during the growing season and ultimately, the seed yield was measured by the help of the farmers. After measuring the seed yield in the research center and field, the yield gap was estimated. Analysis of variance results suggested that there was a significant difference between the studied cultivars in the research center and the field on seed yield at one per cent. Also, results showed that there was no significant difference found between the years and the interaction of the year on cultivar. Data - 302 - mean comparison results in the research center indicated that Siosson with the mean of 6,627.7 kg/ha had the highest seed yield and MV17 with the mean of 5,498.5 kg/ha had the lowest seed yield. Also, data mean results in the field showed that Pishgam with a mean of 5,900 kg/ha had the highest seed yield and MV 17 with a mean of 4,340.8 kg/ha had the lowest seed yield. By studying the yield gap, the results showed that the highest yield gap in 2014 was related to MV 17 in Location 2 with 2,367 kg/ha and the lowest yield gap for this year was related to Pishgam in Location 2 with a mean of 84 kg/ha. The highest yield gap in the second year (2015) was related to MV17 in Location 2 with 2,305 kg/ha and the lowest yield gap for this year was related to Pishgam in Location 2 with a mean of 63 kg/ha.

The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments comprises for the experiment were T1-sole green gram, T2-sole sesame, T3-green gram: sesame -90:10, T4- green gram : sesame-75 : 25, T5- green gram : sesame-60 : 40, T6 -green gram : sesame-50 : 50. Yield parameters like number branch/plant, number of pod/ plant, number of capsule/plant, pod length, number of grain per pod/capsule, grain weight etc. were studied. The highest grain yield for both crop was obtained from the sole cropping of green gram and sole sesame. The maximum land equivalent ratio(LER) of 1.18 was observed at green gram : sesame seeding ratio of 60 : 40.The highest green gram equivalent yield(9.49 q/ha) was obtained from green gram : sesame seeding ratio of 60 : 40. It was noticed that in all the mixed cropping systems, there was higher LER which indicates higher yield advantage over the sole crop.

Quantifying the yield potential of maize at any given site is a key to understand the existing yield gaps and to identify the most important constraints in achieving optimal yield and profit. A well parameterized and validated APSIM model was used to assess the productivity and yield gap of maize cv Kanchan 101 from multi-year long-term and completed experiments. A total of 30 districts with 74 - 301 - soil profiles of Madhya Pradesh were considered for the study. For the 30 selected sites, the rainfed potential yield of maize (Ywp) ranged from 3.3 to 5.2 t ha-1 whereas the district mean yield (Yf) ranged from 0.7 to 3.1 t ha-1 giving yield gaps ranging from 1.7 to 3.1 t ha-1. It was observed from the long-term simulation study that there is good potential to improve the grain yield of maize crop by 3.0 t ha-1 provided optimum dates of sowing and good management practices are followed in the state.

Concentration of pollutants in fish tissues is a true reflection of their concentration in the ecosystem. In this context, toxic environmental contaminants arsenic and mercury in fishes from river Ganga were investigated by inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to assess the level of these contaminants in different stretches of the river. Total arsenic concentrations in Tenualosa ilisha, Sperata seenghala, Amblypharyngodon mola and Puntius sophore were 0.02-2.9 mg kg-1 which is within the permissible limit for human consumption. Mean mercury content was below the permissible level (0.003-0.05 mg kg-1) in all fishes analyzed from different stretches. This biomonitoring study showed that river Ganga, in the indicated and adjoining stretches, appears to be free from arsenic and mercury contamination. This study demonstrated the dual benefits associated with using fish as biomonitors; it serves as a tool for riverine ecosystem health monitoring and also provides information on food safety.

Ten varieties of sesamum (Shekhar, RT-147, PBT-1, TKG-21, T-78, Pragati, TKG-22, TC-289, T-4 and T-46) were tested in randomized block design (RBD) with three replications. The soil of the experimental field was silt loam in texture, having pH (8.3), O. C. (0.35%), available N (175 kg/ha), P2O5 (14.50 kg/ha), K2O5, (248.50 kg/ha) and EC (0.41 dS/m). The performance of T-78 variety of sesamum was found significantly superior over rest of the varieties in respect of all growth, yield and yield contributing characters.

The mycophagous insect Halyzia tschitscherini Semenor is a potential biocontrol agent of Powdery Mildew, Phyllactinea corylea (Pess.) in Mulberry. The present study covers the bionomics of H. tschitscherini and its feeding behavior on Powdery Mildew infected Mulberry leaves. The eggs are laid in cluster os 5-24 with an average of 17.75±5.40 eggs per leaf on the abaxial surface of infected leaves. The incubation period was recorded 4.46±0.50. The larval span of first, second, third and fourth instars was recorded as 2.54±0.50, 3.91±0.80, 4.68±0.71, 5.70±0.70 days respectively and total larval span about 16.83 days and for entire life cycle in 30 days. The measurements in mean length and breadth of different stages of H. tschitscherini viz. Eggs (1.69 0.04 & 0.71±0.02), first instar (1.92±0.15 & 0.68±0.02), second instar (3.97±0.32 & 0.82±0.12), third instar (5.50±0.65 & 1.26±0.14), fourth instar (8.21±0.74 & 1.93±0.20) pupa (5.22±0.23 & 3.35±0.23) and male (5.30±0.72 & 3.35±0.41) and female adults were 5.83±0.20 & 3.59±0.24, respectively. The grubs feed only on conidia during first instar, on conidia and conidiophores during second instar, and also on parts of mycelia during third instar. The final instar grub feed on entire aerial mycelia mass leaving only stomatopodia and hyphal remnant. Pupation is for 9-10 days. Adults also feed voraciously on the fungal mass. Field observations indicated a drastic fall in the incidence of Powdery Mildew disease in Mulberry even in the usual peak disease period, with the increased population of H. tschitscherini in the Mulberry garden.

The present research work has been performed with forty rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes to analyze the genetic divergence for yield and yield attributing traits. The experiment was conducted in RBD with three replications during kharif of 2009 for eleven quantitative traits. Analysis of variance was highly significant for all the characters studied, indicating ample scope of selection. The results revealed ample genetic variability among the characters under study. Genetic divergence based on Mahalanobis D2 statistic grouped the forty genotypes into seven clusters. Cluster I was the largest, while the clusters V was monogenotypic. Genotypes in the cluster VII had the highest - 299 - intra-cluster distance, while maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters III and VII. Plant height had the maximum contribution (55.51%) to the total divergence followed by days to 50% flowering (15.26%) while fertile tillers per plant, panicle length and harvest index had similar and less contribution (0.13%). Cluster means for the eleven clusters revealed that cluster III showed highest mean for grain yield per plant (52.63 g) followed by cluster VII (47.07 g), while cluster IV was early (108.33 days to maturity). Hybridization among genotypes of cluster III, IV and VII may be recommended for isolating transgressive segregants for developing high yielding rice varieties.

All treatments were significantly superior to unweeded control.

Banana is the most important food crops and they are the stable food for at least 400 million people. Banana is mostly grown in a traditional way by the majority of farmers, but success of banana cultivation depends on the communication behaviour. Main aim of this study to analyse the communication behaviour of banana growers, the study was taken up in Thiruvidaimaruthur Taluk in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. A sample size of 120 farmers cultivating banana formed the sample for the study. Data were gathered with the help of - 298 - pre-tested interview schedule. Percentage analysis, cumulative frequency method, correlation co-efficient and multiple regressions were the statistical techniques used to analyse the data. The results showed nearly half of the banana growers were found to have moderate level of overall communication behaviour. Hence, it is necessary to improve the credibility of gross root level extension services and to create awareness among the banana growers about the modem communication gadgets and train them on the aspects of accessibility to computers and internet.

A field experiment was carried out during rainy season of 2015 to study the effect of gibberellic acid (GA3) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on flowering and fruiting of okra. The experiment was planned using randomized block design with nine treatments and three replications comprising three levels of both GA3 (50, 100 and 200 ppm) and NAA (50, 100 and 200 ppm) with two combination doses of NAA and GA3 (50+50 ppm and 100+100 ppm). All variables regarding flowering and fruiting were significantly influenced by different concentrations of the growth regulators. Plant growth regulators (PGR) were less effective when applied individually as compared to their combined use; however, performance of plants treated with individual PGR was better than the untreated plants. Among all the combinations of NAA and GA3 (50 ppm each) resulted in maximum internodal length (7.53 cm), number of nodes/plant (25.67), number of flowers/plant (25.33), fruit length (12.37 cm), fruit girth (1.91 cm) and number of fruits/plant (22.67), while took minimum days to flowering (35.67) and fruiting (38.33).

Effectiveness of botanical grain protectants viz., red chilli Capsicum annuum L. fruit powder, black pepper Piper nigram L. seed powder, neem Azadirachta indica, neem leaf powder, turmeric Curcuma longa L. rhizome powder and tulsi Oscimum basilicum L. leaf powder in the management of Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius), a serious insect pest of sorghum under storage, studied under controlled laboratory conditions, revealed that black pepper seed powder (0.5%) exhibited maximum adult mortality of 65 and 29.75 per cent at 4 and 60 DAT, respectively. The next effective treatments were red chilli fruit and neem seed Kernal powder (5.0%). The germination of sorghum grains was found above 80 per cent with neem leaf, tulsi leaf and turmeric rhizome powder treatments while neem seed kernel, red chilli fruit and black pepper seed powder showed somewhat detrimental effect.

The growth rates were 8.00,4.10 and --3.20% per annum in Sriganganagar and 8.20, 8.30 and --0.1 in Rajasthan state for area, production and productivity, respectively. The CGR of area and production of potato was positive and significant in Rajasthan. However, CGR in area for Sriganganager district was found non-significant. The productivity for both state and district was recorded negative.

Among the cereal crops of eastern Uttar Pradesh the paddy is grown in about 35 percent of total cultivated area. Traditional Transplanting becoming cumbersome expensive in the recent years due to shortage of labour day by day. An experiment was conducted at Narendra Dev University of Agriculture and Technology Kumarganj, Faizabad (U.P.) in the year 2013-14 to compare performance and suitability of IRRI proto-type manual rice transplanter with the traditional system. The soil was loam soil totally reclaimed from alkaline in nature. Mat type nursery was transplanted which was specially grown at the university farm with proper care. Only 20 days nursery has transplanted. It was found that 44 percent labour man hour saving, ultimately resulting in 20 percent reduction in the cost of cultivation and 24 percent enhancement in gain yield was recorded.

The study was conducted to know the adoption level of paddy growers of block Budgam about various agricultural practices comprising of 200 respondents (150 trained and 50 untrained). The majority of farmers covered under the ATMA programme were of middle age group, having middle standard qualification, medium family size (5-8 members) and medium experience in farming (16-25 years). There was significant relationship between age, education, experience in farming, sources of information with adoption level of farmers. There has been considerable improvement in adoption of new technologies and farm practices among the trained farmers. The services rendered by the Department of Agriculture were regular training programmes during cropping season (83.33%), supply of written material during training (82.22%), protection from exploitation of middlemen (65.56%) and conducting demonstrations on farmer's field (61.82%). The ATMAs are expected - 296 - to support the state extension system by making it more broad-based and participatory for planning, implementing and monitoring the extension activities of a district. The purpose of this component was to test new approaches to technology transfer, new organizational arrangements, and operational procedures. For evaluation of field level impact of ATMA model, beneficiaries (target farmers) of both trained and un-trained were compared.

Twenty eight days after planting the results revealed that stumps planted in soil with a pH of 8.1 + sand + farmyard manure at 2:1:1 ratio gave more number of sprouts (2.35), leaves (11.10), secondary roots (4.42) and dry matter production (4.11 mg seedling-1) per stumps, which was on par with stumps planted in 10.2 pH soil + sand + farmyard manure mixture. Stumps planted in higher soil pH (10.5) alone inhibited the seedling growth. The species is able to tolerate extreme soil pH of 10.5, when the soil is mixed with sand and farmyard manure at 2:1:1 ratio, in terms of survival, seedling growth and chemical attributes of 180 days old seedlings.
