Influence of conditions like kind of substrate, potential and time of deposition and NaH2PO2 concentration on the process of amorphous Ni and Ni-P layers formation was investigated. Studies were carried out in Watts solution with an addition of 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 M NaH2PO2. The method of cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic pulse were employed in electrochemical investigations. The investigations of structure of the layers obtained under potentiostatic conditions were carried out using X-ray diffraction method. Chemical quantitative analysis of layer was carried out using atomic absorption method. there was ascertained that process of the nickel phase electrodeposition on Cu(III) substrate is characterized by less activity of Ni(OH)⁺ ions to adsorption on electrode surface in comparison with Ag(III) substarte. The increase in deposition potential and the increase in NaH2PO2 concentration are accompanied by increase in tendency to amorphization of Ni-P system on Ag(III) and Cu(III) substrates.

Disc promoter - Discs mounted on a copper rod at equidistance - is concentrically fixed in the column to enhance mass transfer coefficient. The mass transfer data are measured for reduction of ferricyanide ion and oxidation of ferrocyanide ion using electrochemical technique. The variables covered are flow rate of the electrolyte, disc diameter, inter disc spacing and the diameter of disc promoter rod. The mass transfer coefficient increased with increase in disc diameter and the diameter of the disc promoter rod. The mass transfer data increased with increase in inter disc spacing upto a limiting value and then decreased beyond that inter disc spacing.

Risk assessment has been carried out for the production of a new generation of thermally stable explosive, TATB (1,3,5-triamino-2),4,6-trinitrobenzene). The production of TATB from TCB (1,3,5-trichlorobenzene) is a two step chemical process. The raw materials-TCB, nitric acid, and oleum, used in the first step are hazardous by virtue of their toxicity and reactivity. The nitration of TCB is an exothermic reation where the possibility of a runaway reaction exists and the control of the reaction temperature and other conditions is critical not only to product quality but to safety. The presence of noxious acidic fumes during the reaction has an adverse effect on workers health and on the environment. Toluene is inflammable and its vapor are an inhalation hazard. The amination reaction is mildly exothermic. Moverover, the ammonia feed to the reactor over a period has the potential for leaks or release resulting in toxic and environmentally hazardous conditions. The final product is an explosive and its subsequent handling processing require necessary care. Thus the raw materials, intermediates solvents, and products in the process are intrinsically hazardous by nature of their toxic, reactive, flammable or explosive character. The processing conditions are critical and any deviation from design could result in a number of possible hazards with unwanted consequences. It therefore becomes necessary, it not imperative, to carry out the detailed analysis of all potential..

HPMC (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose) has been taken as an additive, which retard the setting of cement. The cement-HPMC mixes were prepared having improved compressive strength, tensile strength and fracture toughness in comparison to ordinary Portland cement at late curing ages. The heat of hydration of different cement-HPMC mixes show that the lower contents of HPMC interact with hydrated cement at early curing while higher content at late. The cement-HPMC mix has been found to have better corrosion resistance than OPC in H2SO4, HCl and sea-water. Spectroscopic studies suggested that HPMC bind with free lime. X-ray diffractogram of 91 days hydrated cement-HPMC mix displays some new peaks as well as few peaks appeared with low intensities showing interaction of HPMC with hydrated cementitious phases.

Hydrophobic pervaporation is observed to be an interesting techniqque for the removal of volatile organic compounds in dilute aqueous solutions. Experimental studies were carried out for the separation of toluene - water solution (toluene presence in soluble region i.e. upto 430 ppm) using hydrophobic pervaporation membranes (PERVAP 1060 and PERVAP 1070). An attempt has been made to model the process, so as to predict the flux behavior of tulene. Resistance-in-series model, along with solution - diffusion model were used for the development of mathematical model for comparison of results between model predictions and experimental values showed close agreements. Further, the model also predicts the pervaporative concentrations; thereby, predicts selectivity. The model, for the above said puropse, include the solubility aspects through Flory - Huggins theory. Presents a detailed computational algorithm for predicting flux and pervaporate concentration.

Optimal operation for the removal of multicomponent volatile organic compounds from water was studied, using the data obtained through hollow fiber membrane module. The module was considered to be of a shell and tube type configuration. The data obtained were for the treatment of waste-water containing toluene, trichloroethane (TCE) and methylene chloride using polydimethyle siloxane membrane (PDMS). An optimization problem was formulated to study the influence of process variables (multicomponent feed composition, feed Reynolds number, feed concentration rate membrane thickness and down-stream pressure) on the module performance and process economics. A resistance-in-series model was employed to incorporate the influence of process variables. Mathematical cost model of the module was developed. A real coded genetic algorithm was used to determine the optimum process conditions for minimum annual treatment cost of waste-water. The solutions were obtained at a fixed tolunene the required fraction of 0.9. Further, a set of simultaneous algebraic and differential equations were solved to estimate the required membrane area and pervaporate composition. Some results obtained were : optimum feed flow rate - 3.22x10^-3 m³/s, Reynolds number - 1849.5, membrane thickness - 9.7x10^-4 m, down-stream pressure - 1.1 kPa for binary feed mixture of toluene-water system of toluene concentration - 6x10^-5 mole fraction..

Buoyancy-induced flows in square enclosures are predicted for the entire regime of Laminar flow using a Penalty Finite Element method. The difficulty of convergence at high values of Rayleigh number is eliminated by under relaxing the guess values used in the linerarized iteration procedure. The results are validated with bench-mark solutions. The changed features of flow and heat transfer at the high values of Rayleigh number are determined. The onset of secondary flow at the departing corner is identified as occurring prior to transition to turbulence. This is shown to change the local Nusselt number distribution along the hot wall. The predictions are compared with the experimental and theoretical results reported.

Yellow coloured jellies of different forms and brands were analysed for their physical characteristics such as pH, loss on drying, ash, degree brix, refractive index, acidity calculated as citric acid and content of tannin. The mineral contents such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Sn, Pb, Cr and Cd were analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Sn and Cr were found to be below detectable level and Cd was found to be less than 0.007 mg/100 g. All other elements were present in variable concentration at ppm level.

Expressions for the velocity and temperature fields are obtained with the help of the Laplace transform technique. The influence of the various parameters occurring into the problem is extensively discussed with the help of graphs. It has been observed that temperature is not influenced by the presence of adiabatic condition on the other plate for large values of Prandtl number.

Numerical experiments have been performed on an incompressible fluid contained in a two dimensional square enclosure with differentially heated side walls. A series of Rayleigh numbers ranging from 10³ to 10¹² are considered under the laminar flow assumptions. The governing transport equations are discretised using the finite volume technique and solved incorporating the Pressure Implicit with Splitting of Operators (PISO) method. Results indicate that heat transfer and fluid motion within the enclosure are greatly influenced by the Rayleigh number. At smaller Rayleigh number a single vortex is observed occupying the flow domain. As Rayleigh number increases bifarcation of this single vortex occurs initially at the central region which then moves towards the corners. A very different behaviour is observed as the Rayleigh number is increased beyond 10⁹. The results are compared with available numerical and experimental data.

Adsorption technique has been proposed for the removal of cadmium from industrial waste liquors. Molecular sieves of 1.5 mm and 3 mm dia having pore size of 5 A and 10 A have been used for adsorption of cadmium from chloride, sulphate and nitrate solutions. The equilibrium studies indicated that the increase in metal concentration in aqueous phase increases the metal adsorption, increase in particle size decreases metal adsorption while increase in pore size increase in metal adsorption. Equilibrium data are well fitted to a Longmuir model and the dissociation constant was estimated and is found to be independent of matrix of the solution but varies with the type of the particle. The increase in particle size decreases the dissociation constant while pore diameter increases the dissociation constant. Studies in fixed bed indicated that the mass transfer coefficient decreases with increase in particle diameter. The adsorbed cadmium can be desorbed completely using 1N HCl as elutant. The elution rate constant was estimated and found to increase with decrease in particle size. These studies indicated that the waste solution containing cadmium in ppm level can be upgraded to grams levels.

Efficient absorption process depends on the gas/liquid contacting device. The key factors for success of gas/liquid contacting devices are the geometry and the physical aspects of the system - it governs the distribution and mixing of the two-phase flow, the equipment design-impact of corrosion and service life, the kinetics of the reaction occur. The best gas/liquid contacting devices for absorption is the spray column and ejector. In the spray column liquid is the dispersed phase and the gas is the continuous phase. In ejector the liquid is injected into a tube at very high speed. The tube is of either straight or convergent-divergent in nature. The suction created by the liquid jet aids in gas injection. High mixing intensity is observed. Deals with the experimental investigation on absorption of carbon disulfide in a spray column and ejector.

Dissociation extraction studies on the separation of xylenols have been discussed. The systems investigated include binary mixtures of 2,6-xylenol/2,5-xylenol, 2,6-xylenol/2,4-xylenol, and 2,4-xylenol/2,4-xylenol/2,5-xylenol. Separation factors have been obtained using various solvents (n-heptane, cyclohexane, n-octanol) and with strong extracting agent-sodium hydroxide. The selection of the solvent was found to be critical for the enhancement of separation factor and the solute-solvent interaction is important in the selection of solvent. For xylenols, cyclohexane was found to yield better values of separation factors. Effect of concentration of extracting agent and total concentration of the components has also been studied. A mathematicals treatment has been presented for the estimation of the separation factor. The predicted values of separation factors were in reasonable agreement with those obtained experimentally.

The usage of tin metal and its interaction with the food products causing changes in the nutritional value of food is discussed. The results indicate that tine does not impart toxicity to canned fruits and vegetables.

Ber (Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk) fruit is highly nutritious and is eaten with great relish by one and all. Studies on the effect of methods of syruping (cold and hot) and drying (shed, sun, solar cabinet and tray) on organoleptic properties and chemical composition of ber (Umran variety) candy were conducted. The results showed that the method of syruping had significantly affected the quality of ber candy. The overall acceptability of cold syruping candy (7.1) was higher than the hot syruping candy (5.6) and 9-1 scale scorecard. The candy dried by solar cabinet dryer resulted in a better quality product.

Extraction of hydroxy succinic acid from an aqueous solutions into solutions of tri-n-octylamine and Alamine 336 in single solvents are hexane, cyclohexane, isooctane, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone (MIBK) is investigated. Formation of acid amine complexes is a dominating factor in the system under consideration. Diluents are chosen from different chemical classes - polar and nonpolar - so as to examine the effect of diluents complex interactions. The distribution coefficients and loading factors are calculated and interpreted from experimental results.

Investigations have been carried out for Fluidised Bed Combustion of Lignite char with a focus on the heat transfer effects. Wide range of operating conditions, like bed temperature, char particle diameter, superficial fluidising velocity and bed particle size have been used. The effect of modified Reynolds number on the Nusselt number has been studied.
