Environment degradation is linked with industrialization. Surface coating industries, being a specific case of raw materials intensive industries, use a huge number of ingredients as solid and liquid, whose harmful effects on the man and environment are not splet out in unambiguous terms. Today in the list of volatile organic compounds emitters, point and coatings as a class, rank quite high some where in the top five conventional organic coatings, having 10-13% solids generally, correspond to a VOC content of 940 g/l (7lb/gal) to 600 g/l (5lb/gal) of paint material. To maintain the ecological balance, adequate measures are therefore, being taken to reduce the huge amount of emission of VOCs which pollute the neighbouring environment, during paint manufacturing, surface preparation & paint application, and during curing of coating films. The traditional low solids, solvent based coatings are coming to an end. The emission of harmful solvents and other toxic materials to the environmkent has been greatly reduced with the development of newer coating technologies. In this paper ways and means are discussed which must be followed by everybody in the right spirit, to reduce VOC emissions from the paint industry.
