Two low carbon (0.03-0.05Nb and 0.04C-0.15Nb) niobium microalloyed steels were processed through three separate forging and thermal treatment routes, and their structure-property relations were examined. The 0.05C-0.15Nb steel exhibited the best combination of mechanical properties at room temperature (YS - 600 MPa, UTS - 680 MPa, %EL - 24%, impact energy <62> 80J) after controlled forging and tempering. The subzero (-40°C) Charpy-impact energy and fracture toughness of this steel was 30 J and 86 MPa m respectively. The mechanical properties of the other steels were also reasonably good, but the inter-critically heat treated developed poorer mechanical properties.

Removal of iron oxide from reduced ilmenite through rusting route to yield synthetic rutile with more than 90% TiO2 is more environment friendly. Carbothermically reduced ilmenite containing metallic iron is subjected to catalytic aeration to remove iron as iron oxide. The catalytic oxidation step being the slowest in the process requires improvement in order to increase the efficiency. Attempts were made to accelerate this reaction by the addition of few compounds such as pyrogallol, anthraquinone. Sulphonic acid, saccharin, starch and formaldehyde to NH4Cl during rusting. It is observed that starch, formaldehyde and saccharin have a positive effect on the reaction. Various factors affecting the reaction as well as the kinetics have been investigated. The activation energies have been calculated.

Pronounced densification was observed after 1508K sintering in hydrogen. Commencement of liquid phase sintering was observed after 1508 K. Variation of hardness was found to be proportionate to densification, whereas coercivity in general decreased with increased sintering temperature. Corrosion resistance was found to dependent on sintering temperature.

Machinability characteristics, heat treatment response and mechanical properties of hot forged low carbon niobium containing HSLA steels (0.03 - 0.05%C, 0.85-1.25%Mn, 0.3%Cr, 0.2%Ni, 0.05-0.15%Nb) were investigated. Modification of inclusions in the steels with a Fe-Si-2%Mg-4%Ca alloy - reduced tool wear during turning experiments. These steels may be conventiently strengthened (410-500MPa Y.S., 460-600 MPa UTS, 24% El) by forced air draft cooling from 1100°C. Although the room temperature impact toughness of the heat treated steels was quite high (<62>200 J), a sharp drop in toughness (below 10 J) occurred at -40°C. Interestingly, the steels air quenched from 950°C retained good toughness even at -40°C. A mild secondary hardening response was noted during tempering of the as air quenched steels at 400-500°C.

Milk from different species, in spite of their seeming resembalance, show marked physical and chemical differences. One of the interesting differences is in their pigment contents. Presence of carotenes (especially β-carotene) exhibit creamy yellow tinge to cow milk and yellow colour to butter and ghee. Buffalo milk appears white, since it is devoid of carotenes. Butter and ghee prepared from buffalo milk by creamery process have waxy white appearance. However, when such products are prepared from the same milk by desi method (i.e. after souring milk or cream), greenish yellow tinge becomes noticeable in the products. Similarly, a distinct bluish green tinge appears in acid coagulated milk products such as casein, chhana, paneer, etc, from buffalo milk.

Attempt has been made to study the comparative recovery of potassium from glauconitic sandstone with acid lixiviants (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid) with three variables (parameters), namely, leaching temperature, acid concentration and leaching time. The experiments have statistically been designed such that the effect of each variables and interactional effect of each variable can quantitatively be assessed and compared. The results show that the highest recovery of potassium is obtained with hydrochloric acid followed by nitric acid and sulphuric acid. It has been observed among the variables that leaching temperature has the highest effect for recovery of potassium with all three acids. The interactional variables are not such effective as linear variables.

The microbial population in these product to be on higher side and the same increased during storage. The study revealed a poor shelf life and deteriorating bacteriological quality of the product evaluated.

Studies were conducted on the use of fly ash, an industrial waste, as extender in coatings. Simultaneously, epoxy ester resins were prepared using mahua oil, a non-traditional oil of abundant availability. The resins were characterised by IR spectroscopy and their physico-chemical and film properties were determined. Fly ash coatings were formulated using epoxy ester resins based on mahua oil. The coatings were characterised by standard methods (IS : 101-1992) for various properties, particularly for their resistance to corrosion and abrasion. The observations indicate that the use of fly ash in coatings results in improved resistance to corrosion against chemicals and abrasion. It was found that the use of fly ash had adverse effect on coating properties. The mahua oil based epoxy ester resins gave non air-drying films and were therefore applied as baking systems with 20% melamine formaldehyde (MF). The development of the above fly ash coatings will simultaneously lead to the safe disposal of fly ash.

Level of meat, most significantly (P<60>0.01) influenced the contents of fat, protein, ash and carbohydrates as well as colour and appearance, flavour, texture, crispness, after taste and overall aceptability and significantly (P<60>0.05) influenced moisture content as well as pH of emulsion. Product II scored highest for colour and appearance, texture and overall acceptability while III scored highest for flavour, after-taste and meat flavour intensity (MFT) and I scored highest for crispness only. Addition of 60% meat in the formulation resulted in higher retention of moisture in III than others. Utilization of 50% meat is recommended for making a good quality chicken snack.

Numerical simulation of oil recovery from a layered porous formation is discussed. A mathematical model of oil-water flow in the porous medium in terms of the phase pressures has been presented. A fully implicit nonlinear coupled approach with a five-point central difference scheme has been used to solve the governing equations. On physical domains of practical interest, the oil recovery simulation becomes computationally intensive in terms of the CPU time and memory. To alleviate this difficulty, a parallel computing strategy, based on domain decomposition, has been evaluated. During domain decomposition, the original problem is solved independently in a set of subdomains that are obtained by partitioning the full physical domain. Two interface matching techniques that enforce the necessary continuity conditions at the interfaces of the subdomains have been applied based on the Schwarz and the Uzawa algorithms. Results show a uniform speed-up in CPU time and a proportional reduction in the memory on up to 28 processors. A second technique, based on data parallelism where the full matrix, is inverted in parallel across all the available processors is not found to be effective.

Effect of addition of dextran on the apparent viscosity of molasses was studied, using a Brookfield Rheometer. The apparent viscosity was found to increase with the addition of dextran and decrease with increase in rpm. The behaviour observed with and without dextran was pseudoplastic. The apparent viscosity of molasses was found to depend on temperature. The dependence of apparent viscoity on temperature was related through the Arrhenius law. The activation energy observed was in range of 2.237-2.482 kcal.g. mol.

Seven cultivars of onions were stored in nylon-netted bags at room temperature for 2 months and storage losses were studied. The losses due to rotting were found to be maximum in `Decco' cultivar, whereas, minimum was in `Parbhani Local' followed by `Tadola Local', `Pusa Selection' and `Red Creole'. On dehydration of 3 mm thick rings of onion in an air cabinet drier (55±2°C for 9 h with air flow rate of 1.46 m/sec and loading of 4.3 kg/m<sup>2</sup>) to 5-6% (wet basis) moisture content, the `Jalgaon White', `Phule White', `Decco' and `Red Creole' were found suitable for dehydration with better physico-chemical and organoleptic qualities. The extent of loss of pungency during dehydration ranged from 67.3 to 74.4%. `Decco' cultivar retained maximum pungency, followed by `Red Crecle'. Organoleptically, the white cultivars scored maximum for all the parameters as compared to the fresh, dehydrated and rehydrated forms.

Dry regenerative is a possible alternative to existing FGD processes wherein adsorbent is reused for a number of cycles and recovery of SO2 can offset a portion of operating expenses. Molecular sieves 4A, 5A and AW 500 appear to have better adsorption capacity and, therefore, are selected for this study. Bench scale experiments are carried out using fixed bed of 90 min dia and dry air is used as carrier gas. Concentration of SO2 is varied from 300 ppm - 3000 ppm with a flow rate of 1.5 l/m - 3.5 l/m and at a temperature of 15°C - 42°C. The isotherm value, resulted in mono-molecular adsorption and maximum adsorption capacity, is 211 mg/g. The dynamic studies are carried out for each independent variable and the effect on breakthrough time `t50,' mass transfer zone (MTZ) length and equilibrium adsorption capacities are reported. The empritical model is developed for MTZ length, calculated MTZ length and `t50, values are compared with experimental ones and observed average deviation is less than 8% and 5%, respectively. Studies are also carried out for different loaded adsorbents for recovery of SO2 and to know the extent of reusing capacity. It is reported that non recoverable SO2 is 67 mg/g at 100°C. Though the capital and operating cost are high as compared to the existing processes, the application of molecular sieves is not ruled out..

Numerical solution has been presented for the heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate under the combined buoyancy force. The effects of thermal and species diffusion in the presence of a transverse magnetic field are investigated. The velocity, temperature and concentration are presented graphically for different parameters, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, magnetic parameters and the relative buoyancy force effect between species and thermal diffusion.

Effects of frying time, temperature and thickness of potato slices on oil absorption, moisture content and colour of fresh fried chips have been studied. The loss of reducing sugars was found to have an average diffusivity of 5.01 x 10^-9m²/s in case of blanching of 1.5 and 2.0 mm thick slices in boiling water. Multiple regression equations were developed for moisture, oil and colour values in the final product as a function of frying time, oil temperature and thickness of slice. For good quality potato chips, the optimum parameters were 219-221 sec frying time, 145-146°C oil temperature and 2.00 mm thickness of slice by linear programming technique.

Attempt has been made to develop a sterile chamber/hood based on the carbon-di-oxide purge through an HDPE hood for use in aseptic packaging of vegetables. Experiments were carried out to confirm the sterility of hood and its use in aseptic transfer of corn emulsion and bittergourd, drumstick pieces in sterile pouches.
