Effect of 50 combinations of thiocyanate (SCN) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) ranging from 10 to 70 ppm SCN and 10 to 70 ppm H2O2 were studied to obtain the optimum levels required to preserve raw goat milk at 35±1±C by LP-system. Best results were obtained with LP-system activated at lower levels of 25:20 ppm (SCN : H2O2) and may be recommended for raw goat milk preservation upto 12 h at 35±1°C. LP-system activated at higher levels of SCN : H2O2 or lowering of H2O2 level at higher levls of SCN showed no improvement in the keeping quality of raw goat milk.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo Grametric Analysis (TGA) with DTG (Differential Thermo Gravimetry) of high molecular weight (Mv = 1.48 x 10⁶) Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) doped with iodine and stabilized by P-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) have been carried out under non-isothermal condition. DSC analysis shows that the glass transition temperature, Tg of the doped sample is lower than that of pure P4VP. This may be due to the plasticizing effect of PTSA on P4VP. Thermo gravimetric data has been analyzed. P4VP/PTS/I2 complex retained 97.3% of its weight up to 292°C where as P4VP/I2 retained 97.3% of its weight only up to 80°C showing P4VP/PTSA/I2 is more stable than P4VP/I2 complex. Activation energies of degradation have been calculated by using Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger equations. Degradation mechanism and stability have been discussed.

Triple tube heat exchanger was designed for heating reconstituted milk from 30 to 80°C in the annulus of triple tube using steam in the innermost and outermost tubes. The heat transfer coefficients, length of the heat exchanger and Nusselt number were presented as functions of flow rate and concentration. Length of the heat exchanger was found to vary from 0.90 to 3.19 m for concentration 15 to 67% and flow rate 50 to 150 l/h.

Rheological and bread making properties of blends containing 5, 10, 20, 25 and 30% full-fat fluted pumpkin seed flour (FPF) with wheat fluor (WF) were investigated. Dough properties were studied using an alveograph. Bread loaves were prepared from the blends using the straight dough procedure and evaluated for loaf volume, loaf, weight, specific volume and sensory characterstics. As FPF level in blend was increased beyond 5%, alveograph values for resistance of dough of extension (R), extensibility (L) and mechanical work for dough deformation (W) decreased. Protein contents of baked breads increased with increasing level of FPF incorporation. Up to 10% substitution of WF with FPF yielded bread with acceptable crust colour, crumb colour and crumb texture but loaf weight and loaf volume decreased significantly (p<60>0.05) when FPF level in blend increased beyond 5%.

Monoethanolamide derivatives from palm kernel olein (PKL monoethanolamide) was synthesized by direct transmidation of palm kernel olein (PKL) with excess monoethanolamine (MEA) at temperature between 65-75°C in the absence of catalyst. The maximum yield (74.0%) was achieved at 1:8 mole ratio of PLK to MEA, reaction temperature of 75°C for 23 hours. The best condition to purify the PKL monoethanolamide was by using a combination of hot hexane and warm water. This was judged by its melting point and infrared (IR) spectrum. The PKL monoethanolamide showed the ability to boost and stabilize foam. The monoethanolamide also exhibits emulsification property where it suppressed the separation of oil from oil-in-water emulsion.

Two Dimensional solute transport model has been developed to study the contaminant movement through a homogeneous, isotropic acquifer under the influence of steady state flow with a constant seepage velocity. The transport equation is solved numerically by using alternate direction implicit (ADI) scheme. Numerical expriments were carried out with or without first order chemical reaction at the upper boundary and with 3 different types of source input. The reaction at the upper boundary modifies contaminant distribution and affects plume evolution and its movement. The simulation demonstrates the significance of various types of disposal scheme for the same quantity of waste load. This result can be useful in environmental management problem where waste disposal scheme by the industries can be formulated in the absence of in situ information.

Measurements on storage air temperature, specific humidity, produce temperature and air velocity were made in a potato cold storage during normal operating season. It was found that storage air temperature and specific humidity decreased with time in empty cold storage. However, both increased during loading of cold storage. Storage air temperature and specific humidity also increased with the height of the cold storage. The fans mounted in cold storage were found to be inadequate to circulate the cold air uniformly throughout the cold storage.

Film samples of Nylon-6 (unstabilized and stabilized with 0.4 wt.% Irganox-B-1171) were prepared by solution casting technique in a mixture of formic acid and methylene chloride. These films were aged at four different temperatures viz. 110°, 125°, 140° and 155°C for four different time periods in a regular interval of 24 hours and upto 120 hours. The formation of oxygenated (peroxy and hydroperoxy) and unsaturated groups during thermo-oxidative degradation was studied by infra-red spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) was used to evaluate the kientic parameters viz. order of reaction (n), activation energy (E) and pre-exponential factor (Z). It was found that the degradation proceeded with first-order degradation kinetics. This was calculated on best-fit analysis and further confirmed by linear regression analysis. The acvitation energy and pre-exponential factor have been found to be inversely related with ageing time and temperature.

Chitin was found to be a favourable adsorbent of verofix red (reactive dye) in aqueous solution. For a fixed weight of the absorbent, the amount of dye abdsorbed increased by decreasing particle size and increasing temperature. The adsorption isotherms gave a bestfit to the models proposed by Langmuir and Freundlich. Also the enthalpy of adsorption (ΔH) was calculated to be 3.524 kcal/mol. Differential scanning calorimeter signals obtained with dye adsorbed on chitin samples indicates that the dye had been chemisorbed on chitin; the value of Δ1H was 17.828 J/gm in the temperature range of 90 -150 °C.

Ultraviolet spectra of molecular weight intermediates of lignin degradation of the three lignocellulosic wastes are studied by four strains. The results indicated that the UV spectroscopic of native lignins of three substrates are identical to some extents, the increase in UV absorption intensity at 280 nm which is attributed to the increase in the amount of chromophores structures in degraded lignin. Absorption maximum characteristics for α-Co groups and for β-Co groups was obtained for all samples of lignin degradation. While the polymeric intermediates accumulates as catabolite modified lignin polymer, acid polyphenolic lignin (Appls) in the lignocellulose containing growth medium. Analysis of Appls produced from degradation of lignocelluloses by four organisms were compared to degraded lignin. In most cases, increased levels of carbonyl and carboxylic groups was observed and different new absorption bands appeared in IR spectra of Appls produced from biodegradation of lignocellulosic wastes. The comparison of the absorption bands at wave lengths characteristic for aromatic ring, shows significant loss of polymer aromaticity, in degraded samples.
