Ocimum, a member of the family Labiateae, is a versatile genus with about 160 species and innumerable varieties having a vast and varied combination of both terpenes and non-terpene phenolic constituents, in their essential oils. Ocimum species are used for the treatment of many diseases in the Indian system of medicine. Looking to its importance as a medicinal plant, it was considered of interest to study the variability in the essential oil constituents of different Ocimum species. Twelve exotic cultivars of 9 different Ocimum species were grown and the essential oil extracted from them was hydrodistilled. The different physico-chemical properties were evaluated and correlated. The correlation study revealed that refractive index and acid value have a highly significant negative correlation with the ester value after acetylation. Other physico-chemical properties exhibited non-significant correlations among them.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was solution blended with medium and low molecular weight polyisobutylene rubber samples (PIB_m and PIB₁) in toluene. The compatibility of the blends was assessed from density and viscommetric methods at 2 per cent total solid content of solution. The experimental densities were observed to be lower than the theoretical values assuming additivity of volumes of the polymers and the solvent for both PIB samples. The plots of relative viscosities against composition were found to be non-linear. The experimental values for reduced vicosities were found to be lower than calculated values using Krigbaum-Wall equation for all blend solutions. A visual study of the blend films showed marked phase separation and impaired clarity. The tensile mechanical test on the blend films showed a higher yield stress and a larger area under the stress-strain curve compared to the pure PMMA, suggesting that blending with the PIB rubber toughened PMMA. The density and viscometric methods have again been proved to be an easy and reliable method for assessing polymer-polymer compatibility.

Influence of modification of the ZSM-5 catalyst on the conversion of dimethyl ether to olefins is studied at low hydrocarbon conversion in order to explore the possibility of selective formation of C₄⁼-C₆⁼. Three modifications designed in order to reduce catalyst acidity without increasing steric hindrance are compared, namely, dealumination, partial neutralization with ammonia and ion-exchange with lithium. The unmodified H-ZSM-5 produces 60% of ethene and propene, 30% of olefins C₄⁼-C₆⁼ and 10% of heavy olefins plus aromatics. In the same conversion range, the three modified catalysts promote the formation of C₄⁼-C₆⁼ and even more the formation of C₇⁼-C₈⁼, and they lower the formation of light olefins and aromatics. There is only a slight difference between modified catalysts : lithium exchanged ZSM-5 leads to higher ratio of C₄⁼-C₆⁼ to heavy by-products. An enhanced diffusivity in modified catalysts probably plays a role in the increase in the average molecular weight of olefins produced.

Synthesis and characterization of new monomers and polymers containing the thioxopyrimidinedione unit are discussed. 1,3-di(4-chlorophenyl) thiourea and 1,3-di(4-bromophenyl) thiourea have been prepared by the reaction of the corresponding phenylisothiocyanate and amine in an alcohol, which on condensation with malonic acid in the presence of acetyl chloride afforded the corresponding monomers, viz, 1,3-di(4-chlorophenyl) 1, 3-dihydro-2-thioxo-2H, 5H-pyrimidine-4,6-dione. These monomers were characterized by IR and NMR techniques, and polymerized with various bisphenols in a high boiling polar aprotic solvent, NMP, in the presence of potassium carbonate to yield amorphous polymers, which were thermooxidatively stable and amenable to common processing conditions. The polymers were characterized by viscosity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis and had inherent viscosities between 0.18 and 0.48 dL/g, Tg's ranging from 110 to 153°C and PDTs from 493°C to 564°C.

High temperature oil fired semi-automatic down draught chamber kiln has been designed and commissioned in the Institute. The loading volume of the kiln is 2.0 m³. The design criteria considered the reduction of thermal mass, heat loss and incorporation of a recuperation system to achieve higher fuel efficiency. The kiln is automatically operated by a microprocessor based programmable temperature controller and a PID pressure controller. The kiln is running successfully with almost 46% fuel savings with respect to conventional kilns.

Behavior of silica fume modified polymer cement mortar has been studied using two types of polymer emulsions, viz., methylmethacrylate butylacrylate 2 ethylhexylacrylate (MBE), an acrylic based copolymer; and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) latex, a styrene butadiene type of polymer. Superplasticizer is also used in this composite mortar to maintain the required workability. Performance of this composite mortar was studied mainly in terms of compressive strength, flexural strength, toughness, water absorption, and acid resistance. Properties in fresh state were also studied. Results indicated that silica fume improved the compressive strength, capability of resisting acid attack and other fresh properties. In addition to this, polymers enhanced toughness significantly and Flexural strength marginally. Combined use of polymer along with silica fume and superplasticizer maintained these improved characteristics synergistically. This composite material can be used as a high performance repairing and overlaying material.

Change in weights under the exposure of above three corrosive solutions were also studied and are reported. The observed trends in results are presented. The difference of the same with that of the counterparts made with OPC (available from the previous studies) is also highlighted.

Photobehavior of the azo chromophore located in the hard segment of ionomeric chains suggested that in the polymer solution, the trans-cis isomerization is followed by an irreversible photobleaching reaction. Under the same UV irradiation conditions, the thin films showed a good optical clarity and improved photostability.

Sequence distribution of the styrene/vinylidene chloride/methacrylic acid (S/V/M) terpolymer was prepared by photopolymerization using uranyl ion as photoinitiator. The composition of the terpolymer was determined from the quantitative ¹³C{¹H} NMR and compared with values calculated by Goldfinger's equation using monomer reactivity ratios. The monomer composition and the triad sequence distribution obtained from the ¹³C{¹H} NMR spectra are compared with those calculated from the statistical model using reactivity ratios determined from EVM program. The spectral assignment of the ¹³C{¹H} and ¹H NMR spectra were analyzed with the help of the Distortionless Enhancement by Polarization Transfer (DEPT) and the two dimensional ¹³C-¹H heteronuclear Shift Quantum Correlation (HSQC). The methyl, methylene and methine carbon resonances show both stereochemical and compositional sensitivity. NOESY is also used to detect the spatial couling between the protons of the various centered triads.

The study revealed that bricks possessing compressive strength in the range of 75 to 300 kgcm^-2 and water absorption 12-16 percent can be produced from alluvial and yellowish red mountain clays. Judicious control of the mix composition for safe drying and firing of the bricks at optimum temperatures was found as a major prerequisite for the production of bricks conforming to BIS Specifications.

Sorption kinetics of radiation polymerized 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and its copolymers with acrylic acid(AA) and para-sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS) have been investigated in aqueous solution at different pHs. The swelling of PHEMA matrix gets affected by pH of the swelling medium. The equilibrium water content (EWC) of the copolymers generally increased with the pH and the amount of the AA/SSS polymer ratio in the matrix. pH of the medium affects the dynamic swelling kinetics of HEMA-co-AA and HEMA-co-SSS in different ways. The deswelling of the copolymer matrices is much faster than their swelling. The presence of SSS causes expulsion of water from the copolymer matrix before reaching equilibrium.

The equilibrium water content (EWC) of the copolumers ncreased with increasing amount of AA/SSS in the matrix. Enhancing hydrophilicity of PHEMA matrix due to AA does not alter the swelling mechanism which essentially remains fickian in nature.However introduction of SSS changes the swelling mechanism to anomalous. The turbulence effects the swelling of copolymers but not of PHEMA matrix. The presence of SSS causes expulsion of water from the copolymers but not of PHEMA matrix. The presence of SSS causes expulsion of water from the copolymer matrix beofre reaching equilibrium. The effect of presence of additives of biological importance on the swelling behavior of these hydrogels has also been investigated.

Novel poly(arylene ether sulfone) has been prepared by nucleophilic displacement of the fluorine atoms from a 2-perfluoro activated bisfluoro monomer with 4, 4-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone. The resulting polyer exhibits weight average molar mass 1.84 x 10⁴ g mol^-1 in GPC. The polymer shows very good thermal stability, only 10% weight loss occurred at 522°C in TGA under synthetic air and has a glass transition (T_g) at 203°C in DSC. The plymer is solube in a wide range of organic solvents e.g. CHCl₃., THF, NMP, DMF, Toluene, etc. and insoluble in DMSO and acetone. The polymer structure has been well characterized by IR, ¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F -NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.

Standards control diet, fresh and repeatedly heated (7, 21, 42 times potato chips frying, 1 hr daily) hydrogenated, refined cottonseed and mustard oils were administered to 120 rats (33 days old) for 28 days. A weekly weight record of rats revealed a constantly progressive growth in the control group but increasingly retrogressive trend in all experimental oil fed rats. The rate of weight loss corresponded with the number of fryings. Among oils; the mustard oil was most injurious followed by hydrogenated and refined oils in this order. The cause of weight loss has been ascribed to low feed intake and utilization following several metabolic disturbances due to consumption of deteriorated oils.

Rubber seed oil (RSO) heated at 300 ± 5°C for six hours and RSO-modified alkyd resins were evaluated as binders for surface coatings. During heating of rubber seed oil, the bulk viscosity varied exponentially with time. GPC analysis showed that RSO consists of a very high molecular weight fraction that is uncommon in vegetable oil in addition to free fatty acid, mono- di-, tri-glycerides and oligomeric tryglycerides. Values of Mn and Mw of 7393 and 13076 respectively were found for RSO. Heated rubber seed oil (HRSO) gave Mn of 475 and Mw of 599; while RSO-modified alkyd samples of oil contents of 40% 50% and 60% gave Mn of 3234, 1379 and 3304 respectively; and Mw of 6186, 2147 and 8406 respectively. HRSO is narrowest in size distribution compared to RSO and all the alkyd samples as indicated by their polydispersity indices, RSO was found to be semi-drying as the film remained tacky after long period (about 48h) of exposure. Heating enhanced is drying ability. The HRSO films exhibited reasonable pencil hardness and excellant resistance to acid and salt solution but poor resistance to alkali solution compared to the alkyd samples. The drying ability and chemical resistance of HRSO and RSO-modified alkyd were greatly enhanced by modification with cashewnut shell liquid-formaldeyde resin (10% w/w).

Adsorption behaviors of cationic emulsifier and some biomolecules were studied. Specific activities of adsorbed trypsin on the poly(methyl methacrylate) seed and composite polymer particles were also measured and compared. Incorporation of ethyl acrylate in the copolymer shell layer decreased the hydrophobic interaction between the composite polymer particle surface and biomolecules.

Dielectric properties of some modified natural polymer complexes were studied over a frequency range 0.1-80 kHz at <126> 25° C. The polymer complexes chosen for this study were prepared from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMS) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) with some transition metals (CuCl2, NiCl2, CoCl2 and FeCl3). The permitivity, ε', which shows anomalous dispersion indicates the CMC and HEC metal complexes are found to be lower than that of the pure cellulose ethers, except HEC-Ni(II) and HEC-Fe(III) complexes. This result is interpreted according to the formation of the chelated bonds in addition to the position of such bonds in the molecular structure. The results obtained from the dielectric loss measurements were analyzed by the sum of two Frohlich terms related to the rotation of the main and its related motion. No pronounced change is detected in the relaxation time which describes the rotation of either CMC-metal or HEC-metal complexes. The ligand to metal ratio is responsible for such result. On the other hand, the higher values of τ's noticed for CMC-metal complexes when compared with those of HEC-metal complexes are interpreted according to the degree of chelation which is found to be higher in the case of CMC complexes. This result also finds further justification through the degree of ligand-metal-σ-bond (nephlauxetic parameter, α) given for such systems.

Electrochemical behaviour of 1060 alminium alloy in various concentration of ethylenediamine was investigated using potentiostatic technique at 35°C. It was found that 1060 aluminium shows passive nature in all the studied concentrations. The plausible mechanism for the passive nature has been suggested in term of lone pair of electrons present on nitrogen atom of amino group. The curves drawn for both cathodic and anodic polarisation showed the maximum polarisation of 1060 aluminium electrode in 0.1% ethylenediamine.

Electroslag remelting has been established as a new measure for the production of quality steels. Many properties of ESR steels are dramatically superior to those of conventionally produced steels. Majority of inclusions are eliminated during ESR depending on slag composition, temperature and melt rate. Usually, after ESR, the metal does not contain any inclusions larger than 10-12 μm. The pronounced effect of ESR on desulphurization is a result of slag/metal and gas/slag reactions. Inoculation during ESR is a feasible and effective method of further enhancing the ductility and charpy U-notch toughness, with some improvement in strength as a result of refinement. ESR is a convenient and economic route for processing steels and alloys which are otherwise difficult to process.
