Medicinal plants from wild sources cannot ensure consistent quality due to genetic variability found in the natural population, geographical variations and season of collection. Therefore, there is a need to cultivate medicinal plants containing active principles, and to enhance their yields using organic farming practices and post harvest technologies. The present investigation was taken up to enhance the root biomass using NPK as well as forskolin levels under different fertilizer amendments. Both root biomass as well as forskolin contents were higher by 3-folds when 50% NPK plus 10 tonnes of farm yard manure were supplied to the plants followed 50% NPK plus 5 tonnes of vermicompost per hectare.

Aim of present study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of Cenchrus ciliaris and Cenchrus setigerus extracts in order to use it as a possible source for new antimicrobial substances against important human pathogens. Crude extracts of the stem of Cenchrus ciliaris and Cenchrus setigerus were evaluated against some medically important pathogens viz. Escherichia coli, Raoultella planticola, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus. The dried and powdered stems were successively extracted with hexane, toluene, isopropyl alcohol, acetone and ethanol using soxhlet assembly. The antimicrobial activity assay was done by both disc diffusion and serial dilution methods. Isopropyl alcohol extract of Cenchrus setigerus showed highest activity against Escherichia coli. The test pathogens were more sensitive to the isopropyl alcohol, acetone and ethanol extracts than to the hexane and toluene extracts except against Bacillus subtilis. Result reveals that the most bioactive compound was cycloleucolenol-9,19-cycloergost-24 (28)-en-3-ol, 4, 14-dimethyl acetate in both the species of Cenchrus grass, (19.15%) in isopropanol extract of Cenchrus setigerus whereas, (14.03%) in acetone extract of Cenchrus ciliaris.

Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C. F. Liang et A. R. Ferguson is a sub-family of the genus Actinidia, which is also known as Chinese gooseberry, kiwifruit, yangtao, etc. in China, and consists of 55-60 species. The genus Actinidia is a dioecious plant and is widely distributed on the Asian continent. It is also native to China and most of the species are cultured in the southwest of China. Out of all species, only A. deliciosa is intensely cultivated all over the world. In addition, the fruit of Actinidia deliciosa has been acclaimed for its native and medicinal values. It contains several phytoconstituents belonging to category of triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, quinones and steroids. The roots of Actinidia deliciosa has been used as a traditional drug in China for a long time and are reported as Chinese folk remedy for various diseases, such as hepatitis, pyorrhea, gingivitis, edema, rheumatoid arthritis, and also various forms of cancer. Kiwi fruit has been used as mild laxative and a rich source of Vitamins. The fruits, stems and roots are diuretic, febrifuge and sedative. The seeds are used as natural blood thinner. Actinidia deliciosa has thereby recently acquired interest due to its attractive potential application in indigenous drugs.

The Celosia and Euphorbia are invasive weeds in semi arid agro climatic zones of Maharashtra. They are fast growing during kharif and rabi season. To have test the allelopathic potential of both weeds on test crops. There were used different concentrations of aqueous leaf extracts of both the weeds like (1:1,1:2,1:3 and 1:4). The leaf extracts was tested against the seedling physiology of mungbean (Vigna radiata), chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and sorghum (Sorghum bocolar) on 7th DAS. Stimulation in biochemicals was observed at low concentrations (1:4%), but higher concentrations (1:1%) were most inhibitory to test crops. The higher concentrations of extracts were concentration co-related.

Algal biodiversity, population and percentage composition of different algal groups from river Godavari was studied for two consecutive years (Aug, 2003-July, 2005). Algal collection was carried out from five selected sampling stations of river from Nashik to Nandur-Madhmeshwar dam. Monthly collection of algal forms were carried out and analyzed for its qualitative and quantitative study. At many sampling stations domestic wastes and municipal sewage is being dumped daily in addition to agricultural run-off, which causes the enrichment of nutrients in river water causing the luxurious growth of algae. During present investigations, six algal groups were recorded, viz, Chlorophyceae, Charophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae and Bacillariophyceae. During present studies tremendous variations in algal diversity, its population and percentage composition was noticed. Change in water flow, transparency and temperature affected the growth and abundance of algae in river water. Chlorophyceae was found to be the dominant group followed by Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Charophyceae and Dinophyceae members were sparsely recorded.

Wide range of morphological mutations affecting almost all the parts of the plant and seed characteristics were isolated in M2 generation of a popularly grown cultivar of urdbean, TAU-1, treated with three well known mutagens, ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS), methyl methane sulphonate and gamma rays (GR). Seeds of this cultivar were treated with three doses of EMS (0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 M), MMS (0.0025, 0.05 and 0.01 M) and gamma rays (30, 40 and 50 KR). The mutagen administered seeds were sown in experimental fields to raise M1 progeny. Seeds of M1 plants and control were harvested separately and sown to raise M2 population. The M2 propeny were screened for viable mutations. In all seventeen different types of viable morphological mutations were observed. These included seven types of plant type mutations (sterile, tall,dwarf, viney, spreading, early, high yielding) and three types of leaf mutations (narrow elogated, thick leathery and curly leaf mutations), six types of pod (long pod, short pod, hariy pod, narrow elongated pod, fiat pod and large pod) and one type of seed (bold seed) mutations. Results indicated that all mutagenic treatments were effective in inducing mutations in urdbean, during M2 generation. The spectrum and frequency of mutations varied with the type of mutagen. Some mutation types occurred more frequently than others. The frequency and spectrum of viable mutations were relatively high with gamma radiation followed by EMS and MMS.

Polyhydroxybutyrate is a polyhydroxyalkonate, a polymer belonging to the polyester class. It is regarded as a source of potentially useful biodegradable natural plastic such as polypropylene. PHB accumulate as reserve energy material in the cytoplasm of certain bacteria during unbalanced growth conditions. As the production cost of PHB is quite high compared to non - degradable plastics, the present work has been focused on the isolation of potential bacterial strains with high PHB accumulating ability. PHB producing Bacillus strain was isolated through standard protocols and identified using Nile Blue A staining technique. The dye induces florescence on binding to the polymer. Further, PHB was extracted using sodium hypochlorite and its chemical nature of the material was confirmed using UV, IR and NMR analysis.

Two varieties of urd bean (PU-35, T-9) inoculated with Rhizobium and vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (applied through layering technique) were raised under field conditions. The synergistic effect was noticed with the combined treatment over any of the bacteria or AM fungi, in terms of chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate and root phosphatase activity. The interaction enhanced the dry matter production, grain yield and quality also. The carbohydrate, fat and protein content also increased in the Rhizobium inoculated seeds; however, it was higher when Rhizobium and mycorrhiza fungi were combined together. Rhizobium inoculation enhanced the nitrogen content in grain and straw where as Rhizobium + AM treated plants had enhanced phosphatase activity and nitrogen content.

Garcinia lancifolia (Clusiaceae) is an unexplored medicinal plant used as stomachic, diuretic and its fruit is used to cure dysentery and diarrhoea. The acidic fruits are used to prepare juice, pickle and curries. The phytochemical analysis of different extracts of G. lancifolia leaf, stem and fruit revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids and cardiac glycosides. The high phenolic content was observed in the methanol extract of leaf followed by methanol extract of stem and dichloromethane extract of leaf. The G. lancifolia fruit juice exhibited high antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, Streptococcus mutans, Bacillus mycoides and Bacillus subtilis. The methanol extract of fruit pulp was also very effective against Gram-positive bacteria when compared with Gram-negative bacteria. The radical scavenging activity of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl was highest in fruit juice followed by methanol extract of leaf and stem. All extracts showed concentration-dependent increase in the antioxidant activity.

Karyomorphological studies were performed in four seed spices of Umbelliferae (the species also possesses immense therapeutic uses) namely, Apium graveolens L. (celery), Cuminum cyminum L. (cumin), Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (fennel) and Trachyspermum amni L. (ajowan) and it revealed six (celery: 2n = 22 = 4Dsc sm + 2Dsm + 2Cscm + 10Cm + 2Jm + 2Ksm; cumin: 2n = 14 = 2Dsm + 2Escst + 4Est + 2Gsm + 2Hst + 2It and ajowan: 2n = 18 = 2Asc sm + 2Bst + 2Cscm + 4Cm + 2Dsm + 6Est) and four (fennel: 2n = 22 = 8Cm + 4Dscsm + 2Dsm + 8Fm) morphologically distinct chromosome types. Metacentric chromosomes were prevalent in celery and fennel; while, a telocentric pair was located in cumin. Characteristically two long and two short pairs of chromosomes were marked in ajowan and celery respectively. Total haploid chromatin length was noted to be 30.41 μm ± 2.30 in celery, 19.04 μm ± 1.61 in cumin, 29.12 μm ± 2.73 in fennel and 32.45 μm ± 3.52 in ajowan. Celery and fennel were found to possess symmetric karyotypes. Satellites in all the cases were associated to short arms.

It is well known that plant growth is affected in soils. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi play a significant beneficial role in 95% of the vascular plants on the earth. We hypothesize that mycorrhizal fungi reduces salt stress in plants. To prove our hypothesis, an experiment was conducted to determine the benefit of mycorrhizal fungi by comparing mycorrhizal fungal inoculated Bt-Cotton to non-inoculated Bt-Cotton under salts like NaCl, Na2SO4 and combination of NaCl & Na2SO4 in different concentrations in soil. Salinity did affect the plant growth with increasing stress rate at higher salt concentrations particularly in non-inoculated plants. Inoculated plants were healthier at low to medium salt concentrations; however, higher salt concentration affected the growth. Mycorrhiza inoculated plants in low to medium salt concentrations had higher root mass and colonization compared to high salt concentration. Further research is needed to study the physiological response of mycorrhizal plants to salt stress.

Study was conducted to determine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi inoculation on growth of cotton grown under well watered and water stressed pot culture conditions. 15 days old cotton seedlings were planted in earthen pots after treatment with or without the AM fungi. Roots were sampled after 45, 90, and 135 days of growth stages to quantify AM fungi. Mycorrhizal colonization was higher in water-stressed plants than well-watered plants. Biomass was higher in mycorrhizal than non-mycorrhizal plants irrespective of water treatments. However the plants irrigated with alternate watering schedule had shown higher biomass and than those treated with daily watering. The improved growth in cotton plants reported here demonstrate the potential of mycorrhizal inoculation to reduce the effects of drought stress and useful for the better performance under stress conditions.

This work was carried out for studying the aero-algal flora from Pune. For this, various terrestrial and sub-aerial samples were collected. Terrestrial samples were collected from dry soil and sub-aerial samples were collected from brick wall, tree trunk, cemented wall, roof etc. during the month of July-August 2009. All the samples were cultured using B.G - 11 medium and were allowed to grow under natural condition. Slides were prepared and scanned for identification of various algal forms. It has been observed that one of the soil sample collected outside physics department, Fergusson College, Pune shows the presence of Oedodadium in it. Oedocladium, recognized as distinst genera is being reported for the first time from Pune. Only fourteen species have been known worldwide, out of which only five species are reported from India. The present form has been further identified as Oedocladium prescottii. It is associated with genera such as Lyngbya, Chroococcus, Phormidium, Chlorella, Spirulina, Aphanocapsa, Gloeotheca and Microcoleus, the dominant being, Chroococcus. Due to the dominance of the associated blue-green algae, this can be one of the major reasons, for suppressing the growth of Oedocladium and thus affecting its existence.

Oroxylum indicum (L.) Vent, is an endangered medicinal tree. Presesnt communication deals with the structural attributes of O. indicum from Kumaun region of Indian Central Himalaya. It has a strong tap root system. The lateral branches give rise to suckers during adverse condition. Stem bark is light grayish brown, soft, spongy and leathery. Lenticels and leaf scars are present in bark. The leaf is large, glabrous, petiolate and compound. Apart from the regular shape, structure and arrangements of leaf, a number of variations in the leaf attributes were also observed. The fruit is a large conspicuous two-valved flat woody capsule. The seeds are flat, surrounded by a thin transparent papery wing. The cotyledons are much broader than long and deeply bifid. Trees of 0. indicum from Hill and Tarai-Bhabhar areas of Kumaun were also evaluated for structural attributes (plant height, CBH, attributes of capsule, seeds and cotyledons).

Attempts were made to induce genetic variability in yield contributing traits in groundnut (Arachis hypogaeo L.) employng gamma radiation. The germplasm of locally adopted cultivar JL-24 (Phule Pragati) was procured from M.P.K.V. Rahuri, Dist-Ahmednagar (MS), India. The uniform and healthy 200 dry seeds were irradiated with five different doses of Gamma rays (100,150,200,250,300Gy) at Department of Biophysics, Government Institute of Science, Aurangabad (MS), India. Both Treated as well at untreated seeds sown in the experimental field during the Kharif season of 2009. M2 progeny was raised from the M1 seeds and was screened for different yield contributing traits such as plants height (cm), number of branches, pods/plant, shelling %, 100 seed weight (gm) and seed yield/plant (gm). The experimental results shown promontory effect on number of branches, pods/plants, shelling %, 100 seed weight (gm) and seed yield/plant (gm) as compared to control. No significant effect was observed in case of plant height.

Dacryodes edulis - African Pear is of socio-economic importance in the Southern region of Nigeria where it is a major auxiliary revenue source for farmers. Cluster and Principal Component analyses of the fruit data showed three distinct groupings; small-sized fruit, large-sized fruit and an intermediary group of mixed fruit types. These reflect the cadre of genetic diversity inherent in the taxon, and constitute a possible veritable tool for its improvement. Notwithstanding the diversity, the prevailing spread pattern of the taxon across the region threatens to erode a section of the species genetic richness; the small-sized fruit types - var. parvicarpa, as well as undermine the genetic integrity of large-sized fruit var. edulis population. The trend is driven by a vendor/farmer preference for the large-sized fruit type across the region, and except there is deliberate In situ and Ex-situ conservation efforts, these intraspecific diversities of the species may be lost altogether.

Survey on the symptoms and severity of the leaf spot disease of Pongamia pinnata L. was conducted in the different nurseries in areas around Bangalore. Survey revealed that leaf spot was major disease found in many nurseries causing severe problems in seedlings. Severely infected leaves defoliated prematurely. The associated organism of leaf spot disease of P. pinnata was found to be Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz., isolated from the diseased leaves and the pathogenicity was established with the isolated fungus. Efficacy of methanol extract of leaf and bark (0.25, 0.5, 1, & 2%) of Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. was evaluated against C. gloeosporioides both in vitro and in vivo condition along with one standard fungicide (Indofil-M 45 - Mancozeb 75% WP). Extract of bark and leaf showed considerable inhibition (up to 90% and above) against tested pathogen in both 1 & 2% concentrations. But, the fungitoxicity varied with bark and leaf extracts. As 1 & 2% of extract did not show much difference in in vitro study, field trial was carried out using 3 concentrations (0.25, 0.5 &1%) of leaf and bark extract of P.juliflora by two sequential foliar sprays at an interval of 15 days to the seedlings which are infected with leaf spots. Reduction in disease severity was not significant in the first month after treatment. But in second month onwards, significant decrease in percentage of infection and disease severity index (DSI) was observed and the 0.5 &1% treatment was on par with chemical fungicide (Indofil-M45).

Symphonia globulifera L.f. (Anani) is an arboreal species, which occurs in the Amazon with antimalarial and antimicrobial properties, especially in the treatment of skin inflammations. It is also used as a general tonic and laxative for pregnant women and its sap/latex is used against rheumatism and tumors. The utilization of natural products from plant origin implies in pharmacobotanical quality control, which consist of the technical specifications of the species. Anatomical description of the leaves and petioles of Symphonia globulifera L. f. were performed. Epidermal cells on both sides of the leaves were observed; they are heterodimensional and polygonal. The stomata are anomocytic and were found only on the abaxial surface. The petiole is plan-convex coated with quadrangular cells and thick cutinization. The results are relevant to the anatomical characterization of the species since data on leaf anatomy of S. globulifera are scarce.

Field experiment was conducted during the year 2008-2009 to study the effect of spacing (20 x 10, 20 x 20 and 20 x 30), dose of vermicompost (0, 1.0 and 2.0 ton/ha) and foliar application of salicylic acid(0, 50 and 100 ppm) on the growth and flowering of gladiolus. Significant improvement in growth and flowering characters was recorded with the corm planted at wider spacing (20x20) over those grown at closer spacing (20 x 10 and 20 x 20). Gradual increase in the dose of vermicompost for 0 to 2.0 tone/ha significantly improved plant growth and flowering quality. Higher concentration of salicylic acid (100 ppm) significantly notably produced good plant growth and flower yield but also induced every flowering during the course of study.

Study was conducted to understand the plant diversity and phytosociological attributes of the Porang valley at elevation varying from 3,3 00-5,000m in Lippa-Asrang Wildlife Sanctuary of district Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh during2008. Total number of plant species was 138 representing 93 genera and 3 8 families. The number of tree species was 6 with the dominance of Juniperus polycarpos at 3300-3800m elevation. Whereas, number of shrub species was 17 and 7 with the dominance of Juniperus indica and Berberis jaeschkeana at 3,300-3,800m and 3800-4600m elevation respectively. The number of herb species was 80, 51 and 33 with the dominance of Thymus linearis, Potentilla cuneata and Arenaria bryophylla at 3,300-3,800m, 3,800-4,400m and 4,400-5,000m elevations respectively. Index of diversity for herb species in different altitudinal ranges was 4.15, 3.64 and 3.37 respectively. The distribution pattern of plant species was mostly contiguous in all the altitudes. Out of 56 plants of medicinal value recorded from the area, 16 species fall in the category of threatened plants.

Clitoria ternatea L. is an important rare medicinal plant species with memory-enhancing ability used as crude drugs in many ayurvedic medicines. The objectives were as follows: A. To develop a protocol for rapid clonal propagation of the important medicinal climber, C. ternatea L., through in vitro tissue culture of embryo explants through callogenesis and organogenesis, and B. Antibacterial study of ethanolic extract of in vitro raised plant and callus mass against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC189), Bacillus subtilis (MTCC8), Escherichia coli (MTCC1), and Klebsiella pneumonia (MTCC3883), respectively. Explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of 6-benzylamino purine (BAP), (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D), and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) for shoot and root induction. The disc diffusion method was adopted for antimicrobial study of the plant extract. The sub-cultured of callus on MS basal medium supplemented with BAP (2.5 mg/l) and NAA (0.5 mg/l) showed highest rate of shoot multiplication. In vitro shoots were rooted on to the MS basal medium supplemented with NAA (0.5 mg/l). The sub-culture of callus on MS basal medium supplemented with BAP (1 mg/l) and NAA (0.5 mg/l) showed highest rate of root multiplication from callus. The antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extracts of in vitro grown products of C. ternatea L. was found to have antimicrobial activity against all tested microorganisms. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, carbohydrates, and steroids in the in vitro grown products of C. ternatea L. An efficient protocol was developed for successful micropropagation and multiple plant regeneration of an important medicinal plant C. ternatea L. It is a widely used in ayurvedic medicine because of its multi-potent bioactive molecules and significant antibacterial properties.

Aim of the study was to investigate the various chemical components present in the volatile oil of the leaf of Cupressus torulosa. and to find variation of essential oil components among the populations. Twenty-two, 17 and 20 compounds were identified with 95.45, 95.45 and 91.45% in Kalsi, Joshimath and Jeharikhal, respectively were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and quantify by gas chromatography and flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The major compound identified was α-pinene in all the populations and it varied between 30.30 and 34.26%. Results of the study stated that α-pinene, δ- 3-carene, limonene and sabinene components were detected in high concentration, thus competent for use in related industries and as a favourite ornamental aromatic tree.

Attempt has been made to survey biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi associated with seven xerophytes from Ghodnadi area Dist. Pune, Maharashtra. The xerophytes surveyed were Agave americana, Linn., Calotropis procera, R. Br., Capparis aphylla, Roth., Caralluma fimbriata, Wall., Euphorbia tirucalli, Linn., Opuntia nigricans Haw., Zizyphus jujuba, Lam. Soil samples and roots of these plants were collected from four different localities. Five genera with twenty species were reported from Ghodnadi area. The genus Glomus was dominant with 11 species. It was followed by Acaulospora with 4 species. Two species each of Scutellispora and Sclerocystis were reported. Whereas only one species of Gigaspora was reported from above area. The maximum number of AM propagules per 100 gm soil was 1620 and minimum was 110 per 100 gm soil. The percentage root infection was ranging between zero and 100 per cent.

Examined Aristolochia bracteolata, Lam belonging to family Aristolochiaceae for mycorrhizal association from six different sites of Shirur Taluka, District Pune. Aristolochia is non-mycorrhizal plant. The maximum number of AM propagules (226 per 100 g of soil) was reported in July from Alegaon locality and minimum (21 per 100 g of soil) were reported in October from Nagargaon. The highest root infection (85%) was reported in August from Nhavare locality and lowest root infection (10%) was reported in October from all the five localities except Malwadi. Five genera with ten species were isolated from rhizosphere soil of Aristolochia bracteolata, Lam. The genus Glomus was dominant with six species. The other genera reported were Acaulospora, Sclerocystis, Gigaspora and Scutellispora with one species each.

Bio-pesticides (also known as Biological Pesticides) are certain types of pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria and certain minerals, for example at the end of 1998 there were approximately 175 registered Bio-pesticide active ingredients and 700 products of bio-pesticides. The Chemical Pesticide consumption is increasing @ 20% per annum. The pest and disease cause over Rs.29,000 cores crop losses per annum. This situation has been caused by indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides resulting in development of resistance in pests and resurgence of minor pests. Rejection of Indian argil exports are more than Rs.4000 cores per annum, because of very high pesticide residue contents. WHO estimates 1 million pesticide-poisoning cases and 20,000 death every year globally. This is due to high pesticide residues in food chain. Chemical pesticides cause significant health hazards like Vomiting, Paralysis, Blindness, Coma, Death, damage to respiratory tract, allergies, anemia etc.

The specimen of blue green algae (BGA) and soils sample were collected from eight selected sites of paddy fields of Golaghat district. The collected specimens were duly identified by consulting standard published books & literatures (Desikachary, 1959, 1972; Khan, 1970; Anand, 1990; Prashad & Srivastava, 1992; Anand, 1993a, 1993b). The collected soil samples were analysed as per standard methodology (Jackson, 1973). The distributions of BGA have been recorded on the basis of different soil pH. The other physico-chemico parameters have been measured considering their correlation between soil pH, soil texure, % of organic Carbon, avalibility of P2O5, K2O and Heterocystous and Non-Heterocystous BGA. A total of 81 taxa belonging to 20 genera have been identified. Among them, 54 taxa have been reported first from the present study area.

Essential oils isolated from the aerial parts of two different populations of Artemisia gmelinii growing in Uttarakhand Himalaya region were analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in order to determine the variation of concentration in their constituents. Artemisia ketone was detected as a major constituent in both the populations i.e., Niti valley and Jhelum samples. Niti oil was found to have considerably greater amounts of artemesia ketone (53.34%) followed by α-thujone (9.91%) and 1,8-cineole (6.57%), Similarly, the first major compound in Jhelum oil was artemesia ketone (40.87%), whereas ar-curcumene (8.54%) was identified as a second major compound followed by α-thujone (4.04%). Artemisia ketone can be useful for perfumery and fragrance to introduce new and interesting herbaceous notes.

Regional floristic studies are very important and can be achieved by intensive exploration of smaller areas. This is very useful in the revision of existing floras. It gives structure of vegetational biodiversity of plant species. The location of Shrigonda taluka is 18°. 27' North to 18°.54' North latitude and 74°.23' East to 74°.56' East longitude with an elevation of about 630 meters above the mean sea level. It has occupied an area of 1599 spuare Km. The present paper gives an account of the species of family Euphorbiaceae explored in Shrigonda taluka by observations made during the periof 1989 to 1991. The study area was divided in to five regions as 1) Rajapur region 2) Kolgaon region 3) Mandavgaon region 4) Shrigonda region 5) Kokangaon region. In each region frequent visits were made to observe the vegetation and collection of specimens for herbarium. Photographs of some plants were also taken. For each species the family, botanical name, habit, flower colour, flowering season, occurrence, edible parts, timber, fuel and medicinal plant part characters were tabulated. The total number of species recorded were 21, of 11 genera of family Euphorbiaceae. They were dispersed in throught study area and were found mostly in rainy season. The vegetation of the study area is of dry deciduous type and most of the species exhibit xerophytic characters.

The in vitro culture of its nodal segments in Gamborg's B5 medium was performed for multiple shoot propagation and rooting in presence of various cytokinins and auxins. A maximum of ten shoots per explant was produced when 5.0 mg/l BA was supplemented in the medium, with maximum shoot length (3.74 cm) and leaf number (33.6) in presence of 0.3 mg/l KN and 5.0 mg/l BA, respectively after 60 days of culture. The maximum in vitro roots (5.2 per microshoot) was produced in half strength B5 medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l NAA. The hardened and acclimatized plantlets were successfully transferred into potting mixture of soil, perlite and compost (1:1:1) with 70% survival rate.

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria promote plant growth and productivity has internationally been accepted. Fluorescent pseudomonas have been extensively studied as a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Pseudomonads are known to interact with host plant via chemical mediators that develop a symbiotic relationship. During their close association, they influence the growth of host plant by delivering beneficial effects in rhizosphere. Pseudomonads promote the growth of plants either by direct supply of nutrients, synthesis of phytohormones, solubilization of minerals, or indirectly as a biocontrol agent suppressing the pathogens. Cumulative effect of combination of above properties projects it as bacteria of great economic importance. This is usually achieved by either one or blend of several factors released in rhizosphere bysymbiont. These include secretive secondary metabolites e.g. Antibiotics, toxins, enzymes, HCN etc. which inhibits the pathogen or chelators like siderophores which generate the microenvironment, a competitive one for pathogen. These bioformulations also enhanced soil fertility and the PGPR activity also increased grain yield.

The investigation deals with the systematic account of 39 taxa. of family Desmidaceae form Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. All these are the new reports to the district. The dominant genera represented are Cosmarium, Euastrum and Staurastrum. Variations in rain fall, soil conditions, the collecting seasons and geographical factors play vital role in the occurrence and diversity of desmids.

Fifty genetically diverse genotypes of chickpea were studied for G x E interaction and stability parameters in 10 quantitative characters Days to 50% flowering, Days to maturity, Plant height ,No. of branches, Number of pods/plant, No.x of seed/pod, 100 seed weight (g), Biological yield/plant, Seed yield per plant and Harvest index. The linear component of genotype x environment interaction (G x E) was significant for plant height, number of branches, number of pods per plant, biological yield and seed yield. The non-linear component of genotype x environment (G x E) interaction was non significant for all the traits when tested against pooled error. Three environment, namely E3 (8.28g), E5 (8.31g), E6 (8.32g) were significantly lower yielding and the 3 environments E1 (8.96 g), E2 (9.29g) and E4 (8.88g) were significantly higher yielding than the grand mean (8.70).

Fifty genetically diverse genotypes of chickpea were studied for Variability Heritability, and Genetic advance in 10 quantitative characters Days to 50% flowering, Days to maturity, Plant height, No. of branches, Number of pods/plant, No. of seed/pod, 100 seed weight (g), Biological yield/plant, Seed yield per plant and Harvest index. In the vary late sowing condition ( E3 and E6) five traits, days to flowering, plant height, total branches, seeds per pod and 100 seed weight showing high estimates of PCV. It was also concluded that days to flowering, plant height, pods/plant, 100 seed weight and harvest index showed high heritability coupled with high EGA. The influence of changing plantings dates was significant on various parameters of variability.

Pot experiments were carried out to study the response of Costus plants inoculated with liquid formulation of potassium mobilizer (Frateuria aurentia) on AM fungi and production of secondary metabolites. Plants inoculated with potassium mobilizer (Frateuria aurentia) increased significanlty the mycorrhizal root colonization than uninoculated plants. The secondary metabolites viz, the total phenols and tannin content in Frateuria amentia treated plants showed significant increase in fresh and dry leaf, than uninoculated control plants.
