All these 12 species are new records from Jharkhand.

Effects of Casuarina equisetifolia allelochemicals on the photosynthesis parameters of V. mangachapoi seedlings were studied to explore the possibility of developing mixed forest of C. equisetifolia and Vatica mangachapoi. The C. equisetifolia leachates markedly reduced the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, respiration rate, light compensation point, maximal RuBP regeneration rate, apparent quantum efficiency, carboxylation efficiency, but there were no effects of 0.125 g/ml and 0.25 g/ml concentrations. However with increase in leachates concentration, the CO2 saturation point, CO2 compensation point of V. mangachapoi seedlings were increased. These results suggested that reduction in stomatal conductance under the influence of allelochemicals is not the primary limiting factor of photosynthesis, but allelochemicals also affect the RuBPCase activity which reduces the photosynthesis in V. mangachapoi seedlings.

Antimicrobial activities of different organic solvent and aqueous extracts of Riccia discolor L. were screened, from Purandar localities of Western Ghats, Maharashtra. The antimicrobial activity was assessed by 'disc diffusion assay method' againts bacterial strains viz. Bacillus substilis (NCIM 2697), Escherichia coli (NCIM 2067), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM 2200), Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2492) and fungal strains viz, Aspergillus niger (NCIM 507), Fusarium moniliformae (NCIM 1276), Fusarium oxysporum (NCIM 1072), Rhizopus stolonifer (NCIM 1139). More antifungal activity exhibited by ethanol extract against A. niger (8.6 mm) and acetone extract against S. aureus (14.5 mm) whereas, minimum activity against P. aeruginosa (7 mm). The antibiotic, nystatin and amphicillin used as positive controls and exhibits the greater activity against A. niger (10.5 mm) and P. aeruginosa (17 mm), respectively. In addition, Riccia discolor L. rhizosphere was analyzed for biological characteristics.

Study deals with the antibacterial activity of leaf extracts of the some medicinal plants against human pathogens. The leaf extracts of Paederia foetida and Hibiscus esculentus showed high antibacterial activity against E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus which are usually considered as facultative human pathogens. The P. foetida leaf extract showed very effective degree of Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) against growth of E. coli. Likewise H. esculentus was found fruitful against the S. aureus. Both plant leaf extracts showed very effective degree of Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) against E. coli and S. aureus.

These findings are also supported by Leaf succulence index, mesophyll succulence and stomatal behavior. Based on results it may be concluded that Aristolochia bracteata Retz. has facultative CAM.

The vascular organization in the nodes of 15 genera from family Caesalpiniaceae was investigated. The leaves were alternate, stipulate and 2-foliate in Cynometra, Hardwickia, Bauhinia while pinnately compound in other taxa. The foliar nodes were trilacunar, three-trace in majority of the plants. It was pentalacunar, five-traced in Caesalpinia and Moullava. An intermediate structure i.e. tetralacunar, (or four-traced) node was also noted in Moullava. Multilacunar multi-trace node as well as pentalacunar five-trace node was observed in Caesalpinia bonduc and Senna alata. In certain taxa, a median bundle gave rise to medullary bundles, which were extended inside the stelar structure of the rachis. The results are discussed with respect to the evolutionary conception of node.

Allelopathy plays an important role in the formation and succession of algal communities; however, mere are few studies on the allelopathic effects of terrestrial plants on algal blooms. We investigated the potential allelopathic effects of the halophyte Sesuvium portulacastrum against Skeletonema costatum (a unicellular marine diatom). In co-culture experiments, time-course growth curves of 5. costatum showed that algal growth in both the lag and exponential phase was inhibited by S. portulacastrum. The inhibitory activity of S. portulacastrum was biomass-dependent, suggesting that S. portulacastrum can prevent or reduce the magnitude of algal blooms. A water extract and a petroleum ether extract were prepared from 5. portulacastrum. When treated with either of these extracts, 5. costatum showed abnormal cell morphology. In addition, both these extracts decreased the maximum cell density and specific growth rate of S. costatum in a dose-dependent manner. S. costatum was more sensitive to the petroleum ether extract than the water extract of S. portulacastrum. GC-MS analysis of the petroleum ether extract revealed 45 lipophilic compounds. Results suggested that the growth inhibition of S. costatum was due to the allelopathic potential of S. portulacastrum and that certain allelochemicals influenced the algal cell division.

The study was carried out to analyse the effects of growth regulators on Callus formation of Datura metel L. in different explants. Datura metel was cultured in MS medium supplemented with different concentration of 2-4 D, NAA, Kinetin, BAP and IAA (from 1mg/L to 5 mg/L). Medium supplemented with various phytohormone for callus and shoot regeneration. Culture was kept on 25±2 degree temperature and 16h photoperiod while callus was observed on different concentration of auxin or cytokinin alone or in combinations. Most suitable medium for callus induction from leaf and anther were 2-4D (1.5mg/L) in alone and 2-4 D (1.5 mg/L) + Kinetin (2 mg/L) + IAA (1 mg/L) in combinations.

Freshly harvested seeds of the medicinally important leguminous vine, Abrus precatorius L., initially exhibit no germination due to the existence of a sort of primary dormancy. Scarification by 18(N) H2SO4 for 10 min was found to be most effective giving rise to the germination of 35% of seeds. Enhanced germination was noticed when properly scarified seeds were treated with different concentrations of GA3 for different durations. Treatment with 250 ppm GA3 for 12 hrs duration was the most effective one enhancing the germination to ± 98%. A sort of 'double dormancy', i.e. the involvement of seed coats as well as inhibitory chemicals in imparting dormancy, in seeds of Abrus precatorius L. has been inferred. For the purpose of storage, 60% RH was found to be most suitable one in continuing the viability of seed lots up to 24 weeks.

Under present investigation Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) has been tested for removal of two important heavy metals chromium (Cr) and zinc (Zn) from metal solution. The plants were grown at four concentrations of Cr and Zn, i.e. 5.0,10.0,15.0 and 20.0 mg/lover a period of 2,4,7 and 10 days. Plants have performed extremely well, in removing the Cr and Zn from their solution and were found capable of removing up to 100% of zinc and chromium, during 10-15 days incubation period. Removal of Cr and Zn at lower concentration (5.0 mg/1) was found harmless, without any symptom of toxicity even after 15 days, but at 10.0,15.0 and 20.0 mg/1 of Cr cone., plants could not survive after 10-12 days. The result is in line with the findings which say that it is because of general inhibition of biosynthesis of cellular metabolites, impairing the degradation of the biochemical processes and also interfering with the nucleic acid biosynthesis and protein synthesizing machinery in the plant. At 5 ppm concentrations of Cr and Zn, the metabolic activities of the plant are least affected, probably because there is a route by which the metal ion may be accumulated in the vacuolar system of the plant.

Death of children below age of six years in tribal district Nandurbar of Maharashtra is not a phenomenon of recent origin, various reasons are attributed by experts from various disciplines. Present paper deals with the review of malnutrition deaths in the district and also the causes assigned there to and also possible measures to avert this phenomenon and a sustainable basis are looked at. The role of millets as a food grains has been declining with increasing availability of Rice and Wheat through Public Distribution System (PDS). Over the period maize is used as cheaper alternate food to millets and other cereals. Also there has been neglect of millets under modern agricultural production system. Interestingly it is being now realized that these crops have importance as health food. Largely due to their nutrient composition. So that the tribal's encourage utilization of nutrient rich millets and a sustainable method of improving the nutritional status of the pregnant and feeding mother and children below the age of six years. The Food shortage and poverty are more endemic in these regions. Forcing farmers to consume saved seeds therefore in the villages Gene-Seed-Grain banks are establish for maintenance of seed purity and safe traditional seed shortage systems at community level.

Field survey was carried out for one year (Jan.2008 to Dec.2008) to collect the air born algal flora in 10 different stations of Goalpara district of Assam. During the survey to collect air born algal flora Chu- 10, and Algal Broth media was used in 1000 ml beaker. During the study we have observed all types of algal flora. Out of which Chlorophyceae is dominant followed by Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Desmids. The minimum number of algal flora was observed in the month of February and March through quantity (type of species) was more observed in the month of April. During the survey we had encountered saprophytic algal members in the air.

An experiment was conducted during the session 2010 - 2011 to study the embryological characters in Euphorbia splendens (L.). The plant shown a variety of characters like the centrally placed naked female flower of the cyathium and represented by a superior tricarpellary, trilocular gynoecium mounted on a long pedicel and surrounded by a five groups of male flowers. Each locule has an anatrapous ovule. The obturator is an interesting feature in Euphorbiaceae, placental in origin and consist of loosely elongated cells. The distal part of the obturator is reported on the exostome. The endosperm development is ab-initio nuclear type. In mature seed, the embryo sac is completely filled with cellular endosperm. A thick saucer shaped pad of tissues below the chalazal end of the embryo sac was reported i.e the hypostase was a flat saucer shaped structure. No reserve food material was observed in the cells of the hypostase. The embryo development follows the Euphorbia variation of Onagrad type and falls under Grand period-1, Series A-A2 and Megachetype IV. The seed coat develops from both the integuments and the outer epidermis of the inner integument forms the characteristic brittle stony layer of the seed coat. Hence, the family is heterogenous in nature as suggested by Hutchinson (1973).

The mechanism of allelopathic effects in the rhizosphere soil of walnut (Juglans regia L.) trees was investigated. To identify the allelochemicals present in the rhizosphere soil, the rhizosphere and adjacent soil beneath walnut trees was extracted using 20% methanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and hexane. The effects of these extracts (20% methanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane) from the rhizosphere and adjacent soil were investigated separately on the seed germination and seedling growth of cabbage (Brassica ohracca L. var. capitala L). All these extracts inhibited the seed germination and the length of cabbage seedlings than control (soil adjacent to walnut trees). This indicated the presence of compounds in the rhizosphere soil of walnut trees with allelopathic effects on cabbage, presumably derived from the root exudates of walnut trees. Many compounds were identified in these four extracts of walnut tree rhizosphere soil and these compounds were different from those found in the adjacent soil. The extractions with different polarity solvents showed that n-Hexadecanoic acid, 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z), 8-Octadecenoic acid and 5-hydroxy-l,4-naphthoquinone may also be important allelochemical components in walnut tree rhizosphere soil. Based on these data, we concluded that the compounds identified in the rhizosphere soil of walnut trees using different polarity extracts provided a comprehensive evaluation of the allelopathic compounds present.

Allelopathy has been proposed as one mechanism that allows an introduced species to become invasive. The conventional techniques to evaluate the allelopathic potential of plants are the measurement of seedling growth (root and/or shoot growth, and dry weight). As the second of a 3-part investigation into the allelopathic potential of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on Santa Cruz Island, California (an island within Channel Islands National Park), this study compared the findings from both measurement techniques. Twelve introduced species of Mediterranean origin (6 forbs and 6 grasses species) that grow with fennel on Santa Cruz Island were selected. Two research questions guided this study: 1) How do results from root/shoot growth measurements compare with dry seedling biomass measurement? 2) Does either technique provide more accurate results regarding the allelopathic potential of fennel? Bioassays showed significant inhibition in root and shoot elongation as fennel leachate concentrations increased to the maximum (5.0%). The dry biomass technique was not sensitive to determine the significant allelopathic interactions with the same precision as the root and shoot growth techniques. Since the measurement technique used may influence the understanding of the allelopathic potential of fennel, this study has practical implications for researchers that recommend how to effectively manage this invasive species.

Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata), Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) are three invasive species in US Midwestern forests. The comparative allelopathic effects of leaf extracts of these species on germination and reproduction of Arabidopsis thaliana were investigated in a growth room. Highest extract concentrations (0.3 and 0.2 g fresh leaf tissue/mL distilled water) of L. maackii delayed germination in potting soil compared to the control. Extracts of L. maackii also decreased the number of siliques in potting soil compared to the control and to A. petiolata extracts, with extracts of R. ficaria having intermediate effects. In field soil, extracts of L. maackii and R. ficaria significantly decreased the number of siliques compared to extracts of A. petiolata. In a third experiment, effects on germination of three agricultural species (Brassica oleracea, Lactuca sativa and Ocimum basilicum), were studied. Ranunculus ficaria and L. maackii extracts were least harmful to germination, while A. petiolata extracts were most harmful. Germination of L. sativa and O. basilicum was more sensitive to A. peliolata and R. ficaria extracts, while germination of B. oleracea was more sensitive to L. maackii extracts. These results showed differential allelopathic effects of these invasive species, which varied with test species and experimental conditions.

Genomic DNA of six local cotton varieties and three Bt varieties of Andhra Pradesh was used in the present study. Three varieties of Gossypium hirsutum : Narasimha, Sivanandi, NDLH-1938 and three varieties of Gossypium arborium : Aravinda, Srinadi, Yaganti and Bt varieties Bhasker Bt, Vibha Bt, JK Bt, Tulasi Bt used in the present study. For the genomic DNA isolation modified CTAB method was used and Quality and Quantity of the DNA is checked using Agarose gel electrophoresis and Spectrophotometer respectively. In the present study we found that the secondary metabolites present in the leaves did not interfere with quality of genomic DNA.

Experiments were conducted to record the allelopathic potential of a hemiparasite, Loranthus longiflorus, infested in three different edible fruit yielding host plants such as Koyya, Madulai and Sapota under in vitro conditions. The results of present study indicate that the leaf extract of L. longiflorus (hemi-parasite), infested in all three host plants, showed negative allelopathic (stimulatory) effect on seed germination and seedling growth parameters of paddy variety ponmani at lower concentration (0.1%) level. This stimulatory effect imparted on the parasitic plant by the host plants, in different levels depends on the host plant on which the L. longiflorus is grown.

Mycorrhizal fungi are the most significant microbes by virtue of their symbiotic associations with roots of vascular plants and are key components of soil micro biota. Arbuscular mycorrhizal status of forty eight medicinal plants assigned to twenty eight families were studied. The maximum mycorrhization was noted in Hemidesmus indicus (92%) followed by Eclipta alba (83%). The lowest mycorrhizal percentage was found in Plumbago zeylanica (4.2%) followed by Aerva lanata (4.8%). Root colonization was found maximum during rainy season. The spore composition varied probably due to their variation in sporulation period. The high moisture and temperature evidently affected sporulation. The study indicated the presence of higher percentage of root colonization among the medicinal plants growing abundantly with wide distribution.

However, Clumping of chromosomes, secondary associations, precocious disjunction and movements, lack of segregation, unequal segregation, interlocked bivalents, interchanged quadrivalents, pycnotic nuclei and variable degree of stickiness at different stages of meiosis I and II were observed,leading to reduced pollen fertility.

Studied the allelopathic activity of jasonia montana (Asteraceae) aerial parts against 4 weeds spp: Convolvulus arvensis, Calystegia inflata, Porlulaca oleracea and Arabidopsis thaliana. Both ethyl acetate and butanol extracts had LD50 value 800 μg ml-1 and 810 μg ml-1, respectively for C. arvensis. These extracts had LD50 values of 1000 μg ml-1 and 1180 μg ml-1 when tested on C. inflata, respectively. The active principle was purified by HPLC and the molecules structure was determined by 1HNMR, 13C NMR, MS and UV spectroscopy. Bioassay guided isolation showed that 8 phytotoxic compounds including six flavonoids caused the reductions in C. arvensis total biomass fresh weight by: (6,3'-dihydroxy-3, 5,7,4'-tetramethoxyflavone (86.48%), dihydro-quercetin (89.77%), 3, 6, 7, 3',4'-pentamethoxyflavone (89.95%), 6,4'-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone (91.85%), 6, 4-dihydroxy-3, 5, 7-trimethoxyflavone (90%) and quercetagetin 3, 5, 6, 7, 3', 4'-hexamethyl ether (83.02%),vhen compared to its control. Also, one sesquiterpene (Eudesm-4(15), 11(13)-diene-12,5p-olide) and one polyphenols (3, 5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid) decreased C. arvensis total biomass fresh weight by 85.27% and 88.39% over the untreated control. The diverse pre-emergence and post emergence herbicidal activity of J. montana indicate that natural herbicides may be used to manage C. arvensis weeds.

Riccia, Cythodium, Plagiochasma, Astrella, Fossombronia, Solenostoma, Anthoceros and Notothylas were very common while Cryptometrium and Porella were very rare genera in the study area. This diversity needs to be conserved against anthropogenic pressure.

In the study the butterfly fauna and their larval host plants at Andhra University campus, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh were described. At Andhra University campus 38 butterfly species distributed among 29 genera were observed belonging to 8 families i.e., Danaidae-3; Satyridae-3; Nymphalidae-11; Lycaenidae-6; Papilionidae-7; Pieridae-6, Acraeidae -1 and Hesperiidae -1. These butterflies utilized 74 plant species as their larval host plants. Among the 38 butterfly species Euploea core core could utilize 8 host plant species, Neptis hylas 7; Junonia lemonias and Eurema hecabe simulata 6 each; Elymnias caudata, Acraea terpsicore, Junonia hierta and Princeps demoleus utilized 5 each. The remaining butterfly larvae utilized less than 5 host plant species except 2 species Everes lacturnus syntala and Barbo cinnara which could not be found to feed on any of the host plants available at the study site. Also the breeding behavior and season of each of the butterflies were described.

Seventeen wild plant species from the Mediterranean area (Calabria, Southern Italy) were assayed for their allelopathic activity and as potential source of new natural herbicides for weed control. The inhibitory effects of aqueous extracts of 17 Mediterranean plant spp. were studied on seed germination and root elongation of Lactuca sativa L. of these 4-species [Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi, Hypericum hircinum L. ssp. Majus (Aiton) Robson, Artemisia arborescens L. and Euphorbia rigida Bieb] proved most inhibitory to weeds and lettuce seedlings. Root elongation proved more sensitive than seed germination. The phytotoxicity of aqueous extracts of most phytotoxic plant species persisted till 112 days. The aqueous extracts inhibited the seed germination and root growth of Chenopodium album, Sinapis alba, Echinochloa crus-galli weeds. C. album and S. alba weeds were most sensitive to all aqueous extracts, while E. crus-galli was most tolerant. In pot experiments, plant residues caused stronger inhibition in shoot than in roots. A field trial was carried out with 100 vegetable Amaranth genotypes collected from diverse sources belonging to four species, viz., Amaranthus tricolor L. (78 Accessions), A. blium (11 accessions), A-tricolor L. var. tristis (10 accessions) and Amaranthus dubius Mart ex Thellung (1 accession). Dried plant samples were analysed for nutrients like Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, iron, magnesium and antinutrients like oxalate and nitrate. No single genotype was superior in all the nutrient component studied. The results revealed that the genotypes A-14 recorded the highest value for nitrogen and crude protein (4.45 and 27.81%), A-56 for phosphorus (0.49%), A-29 for potassium (4.80%), A-71 for magnesium (4.96%), A-58 for Iron 0.042 mg/100g content. Regarding anti-nutrient content A-69 (4.80%) recorded lowest oxalate content, whereas A-34 (0.52%) recorded least nitrate content.

The present work focuses on the sequence of events leading to the shoot organogenesis of Kali musli.

In vitro conservation protocol for rare medicinal plant Ceropegia juncea was developed using nodal explants by culturing on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. The maximum number of greenish nodular callus was induced in MS + 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) 1.5 mg/1 + 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) 1.5 mg/1 and massive callus induction was in MS + Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) 1.0 mg/1 + BAP 1.0 mg/1 + 2,4-D 0.5 mg/1. The greenish nodular calli were raised on the MS medium supplemented with BAP 3.0 mg/1 + kinetine (Kin) 0.5 mg/1 + Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) 0.5 mg/1 + Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA) 0.5 mg/1 for shoot induction. Root induction was achieved in MS + Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) 0.5 mg/1 + NAA 0.5 mg/1 + IBA 0.5 mg/1 + BAP 1.0 mg/1. The plantlets were established, acclimatized and thrived in greenhouse and then in natural environmental condition. The in vitro conservation protocol developed in this study provides a basis for germplasm conservation of this medicinal plant.

It is well known that rootstocks are used for tree size control but we may need to remind ourselves of their other benefits. They have other specific influences such as winter hardiness, early yield, good fruit size, phytopthora and collar rot resistance, replant disease tolerance and mildew and woolly aphid resistance. The one thing they all have in common is that they produce a uniform stand of trees. The attributes required for a rootstock have become more sophisticated over the years, but limiting excessive growth, precocity ,enhancing cropping efficiency and wider adoptability to biotic and abiotic factors remains the primary targets while using rootstocks. In recent past, clonal rootstocks of temperate fruits developed in Russia, Poland, USA, UK, France etc are being evaluated in the different areas of the world (M,MM, P, Bud, MAC, Ottawa series in Apple, OH x F, Oregon series in Pear, Gisela series in Cherry, Peach x Almond hybrids rootstocks etc). "Lapins" sweet cherry cutivar had lowest trunk cross sectional area under Giesela 5 but yield efficiency was highest. Mariana plum rootstock GF 8-1 resisted to water logging for 145 and 50-60 days in winter and summer respectively, highest than other stocks studied. Various clonal and seedling rootstocks of apple, pear, peach, plum, cherry etc have been rated for their resistance, tolerance or susceptibility to biotic and abiotic factors by different researchers Cherry rootstock Avima Argot and CAB 11 E resulted in 100% survival as compared to Colt (84.6%) under non irrigated conditions from 1996 to 2004. Modern genetic engineering technology is starting to realize much of its promise in the identification of markers that will reduce reliance on tedious, expensive, long-term field trials and thus accelerate progress. Much good scientific work and challenges remain.

Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways, which causes attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. Bronchial asthma and Exercise-induced asthma are the alternative terms for asthma. When an asthma attack occurs, the muscles surrounding the airways become tight and the lining of the air passages swell. This reduces the amount of air that passes by and leads to wheezing sounds. These asthmatic attacks can last for few minutes to days and can become dangerous if the airflow becomes severely restricted. Asthma can be caused by certain allergy-causing substances (called allergens or triggers). These triggers may include pet dander, dust mites, cockroach allergens, molds or pollens. Asthma symptoms can also be set off by respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, tobacco smoke and other pollutants, stress, food or drug allergies (Bielory and Lupoli). Aspirin, aminophylline, theophylline, corticosteroids such as prednisone or methylprednisolone and many others are effectively used to get quick relief from the asthmatic attacks. Even though these medicines are very effective, they may have certain side effects. To overcome these side effects plant materials (roots, barks, leaves, flowers etc) in form of powders, decoctions or infusions can be used to get relief from the bronchial asthma as these plants are the richest source of organic chemicals.

Six lichen species were identified with the help of standard manuals and chemical tests. Among six species Parmotrema reticulate, P. tinctorum, Ramalina pacifica and used as food, mostly Heterodermia diademata and P. cristiferum are used for medicine and one species Usnea galbinifera is used for pillow and ornamental purposes. Study was under taken for the assessment of the diversity of chasmophytic species in rocky habitats of Malabar Wild Life Sanctuary in Southern Western Ghats of Calicut district of Kerala. The present study enumerates 75 - species belonging to 55 - genera and 30 - families. Of these 54 species are herbs, 7 - shrubs, 6- grasses and 8- ferns.

So far there are no records of the diatoms from Junnar Tehsil of Pune District. Hence it was thought worthwhile to study the diatoms of this region. The Junnar Taluka in Pune District is situated in between 73° 38'-74° 20' Eastern latitude on the northern part of Deccan Plateau & composed of undulating hills. While studying the diatoms from polluted and fresh water habitats of junnar Tehsil of Pune District, Maharashtra, the authors collected about 155 diatoms from Dams and River regions of Junnar Tehsil during April 2010 to December 2010. The present paper concerns with the systematic study of 155 diatoms. It consist 25 genus representing 82 species, 60 varieties and 13 forms. All these taxa are new records from this region. Navicula, Gomphonema and Cynella are more densely occur in Junnar Tehsil.

Plant phenolics and flavonoids have a powerful biological activity, which outlines the necessity of their determination. The phenolics and flavonoids content of 20 medicinal plants were determined in the present investigation. The phenolic content was determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The total flavonoids were measured spectrophotometrically by using the aluminium chloride colorimetric assay. The results showed that the family Mimosaceae is the richest source of phenolics, (Acacia nilotica: 80.63 mg gallic acid equivalents, Acacia catechu 78.12 mg gallic acid equivalents, Albizia lebbeck 66.23 mg gallic acid equivalents). The highest total flavonoid content was revealed in Senna tora which belongs to the family Caesalpiniaceae. The present study also shows the ratio of flavonoids to the phenolics in each sample for their specificity.
