Epiphytic lichen flora occurring on betel nut palm (Areca catechu) host tree have been investigated from an abandoned tea-garden area with sporadic human habitation in southern part of Assam, India. A total of 37 lichen species belonging to 16 genera and 10 families were enumerated in the area under study. The crustose form represented by 29 species was most dominant followed by 10 species of foliose lichens. No fruticose forms were detected. The Graphidaceous family contributed 13 species followed by 6 species of Trypetheliaceae family. Biatoraceae, Lecanoraceae, Opegraphaceae and Stereocaulaceae families were sparsely represented with single species each.

In Mucuna pruriens seedlings maximum root length, fresh weight and moisture percentage were highest at 100mM NaCl in 15 days old seedlings. Increased root length indicates struggle and search for water by roots. All physical parameters decreased with an increase in salt Concentration. Biochemical parameters like protein, proline and nitrogen were recorded to be highest in higher salt concentration (100 and 150mM NaCl). Increased proline with decrease in phenolic contents indicate that proline plays an important role in stress tolerance than phenolics in this plant during vegetative growth phase.

Mode of embryo formation was studied in a population of Zeuxine strateumatica (Lindl.) Schltr. growing naturally at Dhanas (340 m), Chandigarh, India. The gynoecium was tricarpellary and syncarpous. The unilocular ovary possess 3 parietal placentae which developed ovule primordia. The hypodermal cell of ovule primordium got differentiated into an archesporial cell. Megaspore mother cell either developed directly into embryo through mitosis or got degenerated. In most of the ovules, 1 -3 nucellar cells function as embryonal initial which subsequently form mature embryo. Presently studied population exhibited obligate apomixis, a type of asexual reproduction observed occasionally in some angiosperms.

The study was aimed to analyse active compounds by GC-MS analysis, and investigate the cytotoxic and phytotoxic activity of Tabebuia rosea (Bertol.) DC flower extract. The cytotoxic activity of flower extract was evaluated by brine shrimp lethality bioassay method and the LC50 value found to be 46.93 μg/ml compared to taxol 0.85 μg/ml. Phytotoxicity assay showed significant root length inhibition by the extract at the concentrations of 100 ppm, 1000 ppm and 10000 ppm. Similarly, seed germination studies showed that the flower extracts possess significant inhibition at the concentrations 1000 ppm and 7500 ppm. Thus the cytotoxic and phytotoxic activity of the flower extract can be attributed due to the presence of 4H- Pyran-4 -one, 2, 3- Dihydro-3, 5- dihydroxy-6- methyl, 3, 4, 5-trimethyl phenol, thiocyanic acid, 2-propynyl ester and 2-propenoic acid, 3-(2-hydroxy phenol) compounds in the extract.

Aim of the study is to document folk medicinal knowledge prevalent for the treatment of ailments of livestock in the Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh. Information on these veterinary practices was gathered by interviewing residents of the study area using the "Transect walks" method of the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) technique from February 2009 to June 2010. The present study revealed that 42 plant species have been used by the local people to control various ailments of livestock prevalent in the study area. Apart from medicinal plants four animal/animal products and three mineral preparations have also been recorded, which are used in remedy preparation. These medicinal preparations have been used in the treatment of 28 livestock diseases. The most diversely used medicinal plants are Zingiber officinale, Plantago orbignyana, Acacia nilotica, Swertia chirayita and Piper nigrum. Comparison of the gathered data with the existing published literatures revealed that 28 plant species have been documented for the first time for animal use.

The present investigation was carried out at Lethpora area of Kashmir region (J & K) to compare the diversity estimated through D2 analysis and molecular markers. A set of 200 saffron genotypes from different saffron growing areas of Kashmir were collected and were grown at Lethpora village during 2006. Observations (individual and pooled) were taken for morphological traits. Mahalanobis distribution pattern employing Tocher's method classified 200 genotypes in sixteen clusters with 171 genotypes in cluster I, 9 genotypes in cluster V, 7 genotypes in cluster VI and one genotype each in rest of the clusters. RAPD analysis of 20 selected genotypes was carried out. In all, 20 out of 25 primers were selected on the basis of amplification robustness, clarity and scorability of banding patterns, which provided 1562 repeatable fragments. DNA fingerprinting using RAPD markers during the present study showed considerable genetic variability among 20 different saffron genotypes.

Nardostachys jatamansi has been emerged a major player in herbal supplements and medicines both in daily self-care and in professionally managed health care system. The principal constituents of N. jatamansi are jatamansone, sesquiterpenoid, spirojatamol, patchouli alcohol, jatamol A and B, jatamansic acid, nardostachone, nardol and resin. All the parts of N. jatamansi are used as antiseptic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antipyretic, antifungal, antidote, antiemetic, analgesic, anxiety and locally as "dhoop". Despite the huge medicinal properties, religious importance and critically endangered status, N. jatamansi could not receive much attention regarding conservation and sustainable utilization, and limited studies have been done so far on development of propagation and regeneration protocols. As the survival of N. jatamansi species is in risk, the present article highlights the major causes of threats and conservation measures developed so far.

Aloe vera (Barbadensis) is world widely used as a medicinal plant in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. It has to slow propagation rate to meet demand of high quality planting material for commercial cultivation, so selection of tissue culture techniques by using seeds as an explants was standardized. Explants were initiated on MS medium containing different ratio of a NAA (0.5 mg/L, 0.1 mg/L, 1 mg/L). Maximum Cell differentiation (callus) was achieved on medium containing a NAA 0.1 mg/L. After 12 days Initiation was started, but after 30 days highest callus formation was seen in the 0.5 mg/L of α NAA containing medium comparison with the basal media. The Shoot proliferation was found better after sub culturing of callus in different ratio of BAP (0.1 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L and 1 mg/L). The maximum Shoot proliferation with 5-multiplication rate was observed shoots after 35-40 days.

Fourteen isolates of Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. collected from different groundnut growing regions in India were studied for their virulence and genetic diversity using PCR-RAPD markers. All the isolates showed variation in their pathogenicity. A total of 85 amplicon levels were obtained with 7 primers with an average of 12.1 band per primer, were available for analysis, of which 83 were polymorphic (97.74%). It was possible to discriminate all the isolates with any of the 7 primers employed. The UPGMA clustering of data indicated that the isolates shared varied levels of genetic similarity within a range of 0.069 to 0.65 similarity coefficient index. The average genetic similarity coefficient observed was 0.248. Isolates Bikaner, Churu, Delhi, Hisar which were clustered in one group happened to be more virulent also, thus reflecting correlation of similarity with pathogenicity to some extent but there was practically no direct correlation between the virulence and RAPD genetic markers of all the isolates.

antimicrobial effect of some selected Samburu medicinal plants was evaluated on bacterial strains like Staphylococcus aureus - ATCC 20591, Bacillus subtillis - Local isolate, Salmonella typhi-ATCC 2202, Escherichia coli-STD. 25922 and Pseudomonas aeroginosa - ATCC 25852 and fungal strains like Candida albicans ATCC EK138, Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404, Aspergillus flavus-Local isolate, Fusarium lateritium-Local isolate, and Penicillium spp.- local isolate. Methanol was used as solvent for the extraction from the selected medicinal plants used by the Samburu community. The in vitro antimicrobial activity was performed by agar disc diffusion and micro-dilution technique. The most susceptible Gram-positive bacterium was S. aureus, while the most susceptible Gram-negative bacterium was P. aeroginosa. The extracts of Gomphocarpus fruticosus (L) W.T. Aiton showed less activity against the bacterial strains investigated. The most active antibacterial plants were Euphorbia scarlatica S. Carter, and Euclea divinoram Hiern. Incidentally most of the extracts were inactive against the fungal strains with only a few proving to be slightly active against the C. albicans i.e. Loranthus acaciae Zucc., Kedrostis pseudogijef (Gilg) C. Jeffrey, Euclea divinoram Hiern. and Croton macrostachyus (A. Rich). Benths. The significant antimicrobial activity of active extracts was compared with the standard antimicrobials, cefrodoxima, amoxicillin and fluconazole. The MICs of the most active plants ranged from 18.75mg/ml to 37.50mg/ml. The MBCs ranged between 18.75mg/ml to75mg/ml. These results were significant at P< 0.01. The findings show that most of the medicinal plants used by the Samburu community have some significant activity on the bacterial but not fungal pathogens known to cause diarrhoea.

Oral administration of laboratory cultured mycelia powder of C. sinensis did not show any sign of toxicity as no significant change was observed in organ weight and serological parameters in rats. However, there was a significant increase in food intake, body weight gain and hematological parameters like WBC, RBC, Hb and lymphocytes in treated groups. Histopathology of vital organs also supported the non toxic effect of C. sinensis. The results conclude that laboratory cultured mycelia powder of C. sinensis is safe and non toxic up to 2g/kg body weight dose.

Studies on cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity of ferns might reveal key mechanisms inherent among them for protection from predators and competitor plants. Cytotoxic and phytotoxic effects of extracts of seven fern species were evaluated by pollen germination and seed germination bioassays respectively. All these species showed more or less inhibitory effects. Phytotoxic effects of ferns might be one of the reasons for their dominance in vegetation in the areas they grow. Cytotoxic potentials of ferns would be helpful in the development of antitumor drugs in future. Pollen germination bioassay for screening cytotoxicity using Catharanthus roseus was found to be rapid and easy method like conventional root tip meristem cells test of garlic.

This article deals with the use of quantitative ethnobotany for assessing potential and conservation priorities of the Thar Desert medicinal plants that are supposed to regulate the central nervous system (CNS). The study reveals that at least 35 plants of the region are so far documented for 9 different diseases related to CNS and 16 other body systems. Relative Importance Value (RIV) of these 35 medicinal plants ranges from 0.9 to 1.65. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering of the plants for their use in 16 different body systems has grouped them into 3 clusters, while Principal Component Analysis highlights 3 plants under maximum usage for the diseases related to CNS. The higher usage of Abutilon indicum, Cocculus pendulus, Sida cordifolia, Abrus precatorious and Solanum surattense make them more vulnerable to degradation, and requiring urgent conservation measures, including standardization of agro-techniques for their incorporation in cropping system to counter indiscriminate wild harvesting. Such multivariate analyses can provides a basic groundwork for preparation of multi-herb combination.

Nine fruit morphological traits were studied in ten stands of Jatropha curcas sp well as at tree level. Significant differences werefound among stands for fruit length, fruit diameter, pericarp weight per fruit, seed: fruit weight ratio, kernel: fruit weight ratio and pericarp: fruit weight ratio traits while all morphological traits showed significant differences among trees within stands. The estimation of the variance components, however, revealed that the fruit traits, especially weight traits viz. fruit weight, total seed weight per fruit and total kernel weight per fruit have negligible contribution from stands and small contribution from trees. Maximum variationwas found among fruits within trees (i.e.at fruit levelorerror). Pericarp weight per fruit and fruit ratio traits (i.e. seed: fruit weight ratio, kernel: fruit weight ratio and pericarp: fruit weight ratio) were affected to small extent by stand per se. The repeatability of all fruit traits at tree level were also low to moderate (0.105 to 0.278).

In present investigation impact of BGA biofertilizers on grain yield of wet paddy, was studied by organizing field's trails in open fields of 48 responding tribal paddy farmers of Nashik District of Maharashtra. The field demonstrations on BGA biofertilizers were done for two successive Kharif seasons. For this purpose 24 experimental plots were provided, with BGA biofertilizers plus chemical fertilizers, while for 24 control plots only urea fertilizers was used. Both plots were exposed to uniform environmental conditions. Grain yield of both plots were measured to find out treatment effect. It was observed that in first year of experiments there was no significant yield difference in both plots, but in second year, BGA treated plots showed statistically significant increase in crop yield.

In the present study, Fusarial species were isolated and idendified from the paddy field soil. The isolated Fusarium species susceptibility also analyzed against Adathoda vasika, Catharanthus roseus and Tridex procumbens. The phytochemical compounds such as Tannin, phlobatannin, Saponin, Steroid, Triterpenoid, Cardiacglycoside were analyzed in three plants. Triterpenoid, Saponin and Cardiacglycoside were present in all plants. The phytochemical compound such as alkaloid, phenol, tannin and saponin were quantitatively analyzed in three test plant. Antifusarial activity of different solvent extracts of three plants were analyzed against pathogenic Fusarium spp. Adathoda vasika has highest antifungal activity against Fusarium solani compared to other test plant. Tridex procumbens has high antifusarial activity in methanolic extracts. Catharanthus roseus has maximum antifusarial activity against Fusarium oxysporum compound than other test plants.

Survey carried out in the Kerala part of the Western Ghats revealed high diversity of entomopathogenic fungi. A total of 401 fungi were identified from 341 insect cadavers during the study period of which 316 fungi were collected from moist deciduous forests (MDF) and 85 from teak plantations. Fungi were isolated from insects belonging to 10 orders with the highest isolations from the order Lepidoptera (120). Fifty eight species of fungi belonging to 24 genera were identified. Cadavers collected from MDF and teak plantations yielded 52 and 29 species respectively. Majority of the identified species belonged to the class Deuteromycotina. The overall abundance of entomogenous fungi was less in both MDF and teak plantations as indicated by rank abundance plots. Overlapping k-dominance curves showed the shift of dominance relative to species richness of fungi between the forest circles of both MDF and teak plantations. Rarefaction analysis for species richness showed that more species could be collected, if the sampling process had continued. The diversity of fungi was high in MDF compared to teak plantations. Diversity was high for northern and central forest circle of MDF and teak plantations respectively. Individual abundance and species abundance of fungi was high during the wet period. The fungi identified included commercially important and medically useful species.

Study was conducted to find out impact of anthropogenic pressure on the biomass and productivity of forest floor vegetation in a submontane forest of Tarai of Kumaun Himalaya adjacent to Kashipur. The vegetation was studied at monthly intervals from April 2007 to April 2008 at two selected sites, site I and site II. Aboveground green biomass, aboveground dead biomass, belowground biomass and litter biomass were higher at site II (Gulzarpur forest). Similarly aboveground primary production, belowground production and total net primary production were recorded higher at site II, but litter production was higher at site I (Jogipura forest). Aboveground and belowground turn over was maximum recorded at site II but litter turn over was maximum recorded at site I. Based on the study, it is concluded that the forest at site I which suffer from anthropogenic pressure have low biomass and net primary productivity.

Effect of root exudates on AM colonization in Jatropha curcas was studied in the current work. Total three treatments were tested viz., root exudates + AM fungi, AM fungi alone, and root exudates alone. Out of which the treatment containing AM fungi + root exudates showed maximum (75%) colonization followed by AM fungi alone. Impact on plant nutrient status was also observed and significant results were recorded. There was remarkable enhancement in phosphatase enzyme activity, phosphorus uptake and leaf protein in treatment containing AM fungi and root exudates as compared to control. Therefore, from the present findings, it can be concluded that root exudates affect the root colonization of AM fungi which in turn improve the growth and development of biofuel plant J.curcas.

Cyanobacteria (Nostoc muscorun) the photosynthetic microalgal strains, contain antimicrobial substances. Cyanobacteria isolated from different freshwater reservoirs, situated in various regions, were tested in compliance with the agar-well diffusion method. Cyanobacteria show antagonistic activities against certain gram negative, gram positive bacteria and filamentous fungi (Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) Abroad spectrum antimicrobial antibiotic is produced by Nostoc muscarum during the post exponential phase of growth. Prodoctim appears to be dependent upon the limitation of one or more nutrients in the medium. This study reveals that the bioactive substance is maintained, against antimicrobial activity of acetone and ether extracts on gram negative bacteria while methanol extracts on gram positive bacteria. Cyanobacteria : Nostoc moscurm produce extracellular and intracellular products which are bioactive compounds and produce secondary metabolites, such as hydrocarbons, lipids, fatty acids, aminoacids and aromatic compound etc. The main objective of this study to test this microalga isolated from various freshwater reservoir and to face their antimicrobial activities on various microorganisms. It also optimize the condition for the production of an antimicrobial agents.

Since my work is distributed in 391 reprints (save the subsequent ones), an effort has been made here to bring all the taxa and information in one place. It comprises 6059 entries from the reprints giving an account of 2084 fungal taxa belonging to 259 genera on 2969 hosts/substrates. Generic key, digital formula, synoptic key to the species is provided. In the key, all the species are arranged under their alphabetically arranged host families. Description of the individual species is provided with the citation, detailed description, materials examined and their details including their herbarium details. Each species is supplemented with line drawings. Host and the species index is provided at the end. This work includes five new species: Meliola orippaensis, M. colycopteridis, M. cariappoe, M. harpullicola and M. mutabilidis; a new variety: Irenopsis hiptages Yarnam. var, indica and two new names: Asteridiella micheliifolia (based on A. micheliae) and Meliola strombosiicola (based on Meliola strombosiae.

Present communication deals with the algal population (Chlorophyceae) and their present status in receding water bodies of Ranchi which are facing pollution. It reveals 26 genera encompassing 70 species of Chlorophyceae in the region. The genera are Sphaerella, Tetraspora, Chlorococcum, Nautococcus Phyllobium, Pediastrum, Hydrodictyon, Tetraedron, Chlorella, Oocystis, Nephrocytium, Botriococcus, Ankistrodesmus, Selenastrum, Kirchneriella, Coelastrum, Crucigenia, Scenedesmus, Ulothrix, Cladophora, Stigeoclonium, Oedogonium, Bulbochaete, Spirogyra, Closterium, and Cosmarium. As compared to the records of adjacent states, the algal population of this region share 17 common genera with Orissa, 16 with West Bengal and 19 with North East States thus suggesting a common algal heritage.

Fourteen blue- green and green algae survived for widely different time periods ranging between 22- 102 d in control culture medium. Irrespective of their long or short survival period in control cultures, their pro- or eukaryotic nature, their different morphological types or natural habitats, they all survived for a short time period ranging between 2- 4 d in 20,000 ppm gammaxine, captan, DDT, 2, 4-D or detergent; 2- 7 d in 20,000 ppm urea; 2- 3 d in 20,000 ppm thiourea; 1/2 2 d in 20,000 ppm endosulfan; 2- 7 d in 1,000 ppm Ni or Zn; 1- 6 d in 1,000 ppm Cu; 1/2- 4 d in 1,000 ppm Co; 1/2- 3 d in 1,000 ppm Pb; 1/2- 2 d in 1,000 ppm Hg; 2- 5 d in 100% kerosene oil and 1/2- 2 d in 100% petrol (showing the relative toxicity of different chemicals to different algae). Dilution decreased the toxicity of these agents very little, indicating that they all were very toxic to algae. None of the agent induced the formation of any reproductive or dormant cells. Gammaxine, captan, DDT. 2, 4-D, urea, detergent, petrol, kerosene, endosulfan, Ni, Zn, or Pb favored the formation of necridia cells in Phormidium bohneri/ P. foveolaruml Microcoleus chthonoplastesl Lyngbya birgei and/ or L. major filaments. Scenedesmus quadricauda shed off all spines earlier, Hormidium flaccidum fragmented less or not at all, Scytpnema millet formed no false branch and heterocyst, Aphanothece pallida and Gloeocapsa atrata cells did not divide, Cosmarium granatum cells did not form any zygospore, and Oedogonium sp. not any oogonia-like cells under all or most of treatments with 100- 20,000 ppm gammaxine, captan, DDT, 2, 4-D, endosulfan, urea, thiourea, detergent; 1- 1,000 ppm Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Pb or Hg; 1-100% petrol and kerosene.

The seeds of Capsicum annuum L. were treated with 0.5% aqueous solution of MMS for 3,5 and 6 h. During the cytological studies 2 desynaptic plant were isolated at 6 h treatment. In plant-1, average number of univalents and bivalents per cell were 13.00 and 6.50, at diakinesis and 15.80 and 4.52 at metaphase-I, while in plan-2 it was 6.12 and 9.20 at diakinesis and 10.80 and 7.80 at metaphase-I. At anaphase, equal distribution of chromosome was observed only in 7.89 and 11.42% pollen mother cells (PMCs) in plant-1 and plant-2 respectively. Rest of PMCs shows irregular distribution of chromosomes to the poles. Laggards at anaphase and micronuclei at telophase were also recorded. The desynaptic obtained during the present investigation, fit into the medium strong type with reduced pollen fertility.

Baccaurea ramiflora Lour. (Family: Euphorbiaceae), locally know as Latkan, is a versatile plant with number of uses. Latkan wine is traditionally used in Malayasia and parts of India. In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols and proanthocyanidins as well as DPPH scavenging activity of the wine, prepared from the fruit pulp, with respect to aging in comparison with the juice. The total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols and proanthocyanidins ranged from 141.27-313.78 mg GAE/L, 149.2-531.2 mg QE/L, 103.2-179.2 mg QE/L and 1.46-8.45 μg catechin/L, respectively. The free radical scavenging activity by DPPH method showed the inhibition (%) of the samples in between 5.85-37%.

Present paper reports variations in the inorganic constituents, trace elements and some organic osmolytes from the leaves of different age of these species. There are some marked differences in the mineral and organic osmolyte status of these species. Essential elements and organic compounds are translocated away from the senescent leaves. Sodium and chloride show accumulation as per increase in the leaf age.

Mirabilis jalapa L. belonging to family Nyctaginaceae is a widely used traditional medicinal plant in different parts of the world. In present study, aqueous methanolic extract and fractions from tuberous root of M. jalapa were evaluated for antimicrobial and free radical scavenging activities. The tuberous root was extracted in 80 % methanol. Phytochemical constituents were tested following standard procedures which revealed the presence of terpenoids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, phenolic compounds and alkaloids. The dried extract was further fractionated by using solvents chloroform, ethyl acetate, amyl alcohol, methanol and water. Free radical scavenging capacity was evaluated by 2, 2 diphenyl 1 picrylhydrazine (DPPH) and 2, 2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) assays. Ethnoveterinary surveys of the study area revealed veterinary uses of 54 plants belonging to 34 families of Angiosperms. Euphorbiaceae is the dominant family with a number of 6 species used in veterinary medicines. The identified taxa are described by mentioning their families, vernacular names, ethnoveterinary medicinal uses along with mode of administration.

Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaertn. belongs to family Bombacaceae, a native of tropical America, less common in deciduous forests of the Maharashtra state. It is valuable medicinal tree. The fresh leaves are used in dizziness. Decoction of boiled roots is used to treat oedema, gum is eaten to relief stomach upset, tender shoot decoction is a contraceptive and leaf infusion is taken orally against cough and throat affection. For the present study, Seeds and cuttings of this plant were collected from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University camp, Aurangabad. Various scarification treatments were given for enhancing seed germination such as mechanical treatment (scraping method), treating the seeds with conc. HCl, H2S04, NaOH, KOH and hot water treatment was given to the seeds. Of these treatments, hot water treatment exhibited highest percentage of seed germination. Growth hormones like IAA, IBA and GA were found to be effective in sprouting of the stem cuttings.

This paper is part of the internship program including field work and desk work in Teluk Cenderawasih National Park office, Manokwari West Papua from November 2009 to February 2010. Field work was conducted to learn how local peoples are involved in zoning stages. This study reveals that the zoning system in Teluk Cenderawasih National Park is known as "community based zoning". There are 12 stages in building zoning in the community mapping process. There are 3260 households which are spread over 64 villages around the national park. Accommodating people's desires, livelihoods as well as traditional taboos is obligatory. For this reason, zoning was built as one approach in this national park. There are 6 zones as a result from zoning process it self. On the other hand, local people are involved in the whole process not have meaning that there going bail for sustainable way to extract resources by them. In fact, conflict on resources extraction is still going on. In addition, poverty is main in this national park. It has had a big influence on the management of the resources. One pathway to reduce poverty is by economic alternative incentives which will ensure sustainable conservation efforts.

To gain an understanding of the velocity and mechanism of electrical signalling for long-distance communication in plants, a slender jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) stem was provided with a train of electrical pulses through a specially designed microelectrode at the phloem region. The propagated electric signal was detected at a distance 150 cm above the input region. The applied square pulses were reduced considerably and modified to curved ones at the output point. The signal moved extracellular with a measured velocity of almost nanoseconds from input to output electrode. Several hypotheses for such rapid electrical signalling are proposed.

Capparis tenera Dalz. (Capparaceae) is poorly reported in South-Western region of India. Earlier workers have reported C.tenera from Maharashtra without exact locality. There is no any specimen of the species in any Herberia of Maharashtra state. Since more than eight decades there was no authentic report on its occurrence, hence the occurrence of C.tenera in Maharashtra was doubtful. Recently it was collected from various localities of Kolhapur district, which confirm its occurrence and distribution in Maharashtra. Brief description of the species along with coloured photographs are given in the present paper.

The leaf and stem bark extracts from some species of Bignoniaceae (Adenochalyma alliaceum, Crescentia cujute, Millingtonia hortensis, Pyrostegia venusta and Tabebuia argentia), were found to show antibacterial activities towards the Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphyloccus aureus), Gram negative (Escherichia coli) and yeast (Candida albicans). The extract of Tabebuia argentia was found to be the most active against the Gram-positive bacteria.

Ultradian protein synthesis rhythm has been detected in hepatocyte and keratinocyte cultures maintained on slides in serum-free medium. Now we report a novel cell type, the mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC). Under similar conditions, the rhythm was not observed in MSC cultures obtained either from rat bone marrow or human adipose tissue. In MSC, this rhythm was initiated by 2nM melatonin adding to the medium for 5 mm. The rhythm initiated by melatonin was not detected after pretreatment MSC cultures with intracellular calcium chelator BAPTA-AM (1,2-bis (2-aminophenoxy) ethane-N, N, N', N'- tetraacetic acid (acetomethul) ester,) - 2 μM, 60 min. The same effect was exerted by protein kinases inhibitor - H7 (1-(5-isoquinolinesulfonyl)-5-methylpiperasine dihydrochloride) - 40 μM, 60 min. Similar effects, but induced with endogenous synchronization, have been earlier shown for hepatocytes and keratinocytes. Differences in cell-cell communication between epithelial and MSC have been discussed.

This paper presents the findings of an exploratory study on ethnoveterinary medicinal systems used for livestock in Sikkim Himalaya. The data have been collected from March 2008 to June 2009 through open conversation with local people and traditional healers. It has been resulted in the documentation of 27 medicinal plant species belonging to 20 families and 27 genera. There are 16 types of ailment have been reported to be cured by the use of 27 plant species. Out of 27 species, the highest number of plants has been reported to treat cut, injuries and wound. As regards the plant part/s used in remedy preparation, the maximum numbers of species are harvested for leaves (9 species) followed by roots and rhizomes (8 species), whole plants, fruits, etc. The richness of plant diversity decreased with increase in altitude but the percentage of species used as medicine steadily increase with increase in altitude, may be due to preference given to herbal remedies in high altitude areas with having no alternative choice and poverty. This underlines the potentials of the ethnomedicine and need for the documentation of traditional knowledge for the greater benefit of mankind.

Twenty five taxa of Chlorococcales are being collected from different aquatic habitats of Nashik, between May,2009 to January,2010. These taxa belongs to 14 genera, 25 species and 06 varieties. The most common genera are Hydrodictyon, Pediastrum, Coleastrum, Scenedesmus. Genus Gloeotaenium is the rare genera reported from Maharashtra, and it is collected from the Nashik.
