Anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of cultured mycelia of four different species of the oyster mushroom, Pleurotus was examined. The activity was evaluated by carrageenan induced acute and formalin induced chronic models in mice. The extracts showed significant dose dependent inhibition of both acute and chronic inflammation and the activity was comparable to that of standard reference drug Diclofenac. The results thus indicated that mycelia of Pleurotus species possess significant anti-inflammatory activity. The findings also reveal the potential therapeutic value of the mycelium of Pleurotus species as anti-inflammatory agent.

The diffusates of Ipomoea ohiaincd from different parts and their combinations produced significant effect on germination and early seedling growth of paddy var. 5016. Among the diffusates tested at 50% and 100% level. Young Shooi-YS (T-2,), Flower-F + YS (T-1) and F + Leaf-L + YS (T-1) diffusates (D) of Ipomoea shows stimulatory (negative) allelopathic effect on seed germination and early seedling growth of paddy var. 5016. However all other diffusates of Ipomoea and treatments exhibit both stimulatory (negative) and inhibitory (positive) allelopathic effect. Maximum seed germination of 96% was favoured by the diffusates of L + YS and F + L + YS at 50% level in T-3. F + L diffusates (at 100% level) of Ipomoea increase the seedling growth to a maximum of 26.2 cm/pi in T-3 as compared to other diffusates and treatments. Higher Seedling Vigour Index-SVI (2482) and Seedling Tolerance Index-STl (1.45) of paddy seedling was recorded in T-3 (L + YS D at 50% level) and T-1 (F+LYS D at 50% level). respectively. Maximum biomass (fresh weight - 96mg/pl and dry weight - 19mg/pl) production was recorded in F + L and L diffusates of Ipomoea at 100% level in soil treatments (T-3).

The biochemical analysis of leaves of Mappia foetida Miers (Nathapodytes nimmoniana Mabberley) affected by Cylindrosporium mappiae Thirum & Nars were investigated. The fungal pathogen stimulated accumulation of polyphenols and proline content. On the contrary, chlorophylls, nitrogen, reducing sugars, starch and carbohydrate content were considerably decreased in the infected leaves. Meanwhile the activity of enzymes acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase were reduced, but enhanced activity of enzymes peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were recorded.

In vitro studies were carried out to standardize the hormonal requirement and to determine the best source of explant (seed. leaf and young inflorescence) for callus induction and efficient plant regeneration in Pearl millet. Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2.0 mg 1 1 2.4-D (2,4-Dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) induced maximum callus formation irrespective of explants. MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg 1 1 BAP + 0.5 mg 11 IAA for shoot formation and 1.0 mg 1 1 IBA + 1.5 mg 1 1 IAA for root formation were superior to other hormonal combinations in terms of regeneration. The maximum response for callus induction and regeneration was obtained from young inflorescence followed by seed.

Two greengram (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) mutants of K-851 and B-l along with their respective parents inoculated with Bradyrhizobium strain M-10 to study their response to root-shoot characteristics and nitrogenase activity com-prised the experimental materials. Positive effects of Bradyrhizobial application in the soil was reflected by all the characters like 'root fresh weight', 'root dry weight', 'shoot fresh weight', 'shoot dry weight' and 'nodule volume' irrespective of varieties and their respective mutants. Bold grain mutant of K-851 had higher effective nodule number both in parent and Bradyrhizobium treated population as compared to control. Nitrogen fixing potential in terms of nitrogenase activity was recorded from the plants of inoculated and uninoculated bold grain mutant and uninoculated control. Higher nitrogenase activity could be observed in case of both the mutants and their parents than the uninoculated control. The bold grain mutant of K-851 had the highest nitrogenase activity as compared to K-851 and B-1 control as well as their mutants. As the mutant (K-851) had higher number of effective nodule and greater nodule volume and dry weight, better yield/plant is therefore corroborative. Thus there is a scope of selection of plants with higher nitrogen fixing capability following mutagenesis.

The rooting of all the explains were reported within ft days and all the explains had well developed calli within 24 - 27 days. The calli of size 3. 2. 1 and 0.5 cm2 were transferred in fresh MS medium. The number of plant obtained per callus varied and it was interesting to note that smallest callus produced maximum number of plantlets/unit area.

Provides a relative account of cytological and developmental effects of caffeine, and diethyl sulphate (DES) on meiotic features and pollen fertility in Vicia faba L. Studies undertaken in M1 generation on the variety Major of this species show that both the chemical mutagens exhibit various kinds of chromosomal abnormali-ties and causes reduction in pollen fertility. The effects were dose dependent. However, the percentage of abnormalities induced by DES was higher than caffeine suggesting that DES could be more effective in inducing genetic changes as compared to caffeine in this crop.

Relative effects of 8-Hydroxy Quinoline (8-HQ) on meiosis and pollen fertility were studied in Vicia faba L. var. major in M1 generation. Meiotic studies revealed dose dependent decrease in chiasma frequency from 18.56 in control to 17.80 in 1.50% of 8-HQ at prophase-1 and from 17.76 in control to 16.92 in 1.50% of 8-HQ at Metaphase-1. The other meiotic aberrations observed were stickiness, laggards, univalents, multivalents, bridges, fragments, precocious separation etc. Stickiness of chromosomes was the most common aberration followed by precocious separation and laggards. Among the different stages of meiosis the frequency of chromosomal aberration was maximum at metaphase stage and showed dose dependent increase with the mutagen. Pollen sterility seems to be the cumulative result of various meiotic aberrations.

Post harvesting studies for Medicinal plants are essential to maintain the quality and efficacy of the medicinal plants. The packaging is also one of the most necessary event. In the present study, the effects of different packaging overa period of time on the mycoflora were studied. Four types of packagings were used for storage viz., polythene, cloth, paper and gunny bag but unpacked sample was used for control set. The study was conducted for a period of two years (Dec 1999 to Dec 2001). The total number of mycoflora in 2000 on Adhatodu zeylanica was found 31 in April, 16 in August, 5 in December while in 2001 it was 3 in April, 11 in August and 2 in December. A total number of 31 fungal species were recorded on all packaging and control set which were belonging to 15 genera. Twelve species belonging to Aspergillus, one Alternaria, one Botrytis, one Botryodiplodia, one to Curvularia, one to Colletotrichum, three to Fusarium, two to Gilmaniella, one to Moniella, one to Mucor, three to Penicillium, one to Paecilomyces, two to Rhiiopus, one to Theilavia, and one to Zygosporium species. The polythene packaging and cold climate was found the most effective in controlling the microbial population and minimizing the loss of quality.

Uniform seedlings were treated with different concentrations of goal for 24 hours. Then they were thoroughly washed with distilled water and kept for germination in petridishes containing double ayered of moistened filter paper at room temperature for 72 hours. The effect of herbicide on linear growth of hypocotyls and radicles was noted Goal was found effective in checking the linear growth of the seedlings. This herbicide inhibited the linear growth of the seedlings and caused swelling. The radicle was found to be more succeptible than hypocotyl. The lethal dose was found to be 300 ppm for hypocotyl and 250 ppm for radicle. The seedlings showed some morphological changes like inhibition of leteral root formation and colour of seedlings changed from green to yellowish observed after herbicidal treatment.

The percentage of abnormalities in root tips cells increased gradually with increase in concentrations of herbicides. The percentage of abnormalities in root tips cells were 0.33 to 3.11 at 2000 to 5000 ppm of 2,4-D, 1.07 to 2.92 at 2000 to 8000 ppm of Oxyfluorfen and 0.62 to 2.54 at 15000 to 25000 ppm of Glyphosate. The abnormalities like binucleolate cells and clumping of chromosomes were observed.

Extracts of the medicinal plants Glycyrrhiza glabra,L.and Holarrhena antidysenterica Wall neutralized stable DPPH (2,2diphenyl -1-picryl-hydrazyl) free radical and prevented hydroxyl radical induced damage to deoxyribose. The extracts protected supercoilled DNA of the plasmid pBR322 from gamma-radiation induced strand breaks as evidenced from studies on agarose gel electrophoresis of the plasmid DNA after radiation exposure. Exposure of liver homogenates to 25 Gy gamma-radiation in vitro resulted in peroxidative damage to membrane lipids. Presence of the extracts along with the homogenates protected lipids from peroxidative damage. Administration of the extracts (100uμg/kg body weight) p.o. to mice prior to whole body gamma-irradiation (4Gy) prevented radiation-induced peroxidation of lipids in liver tissue. The radioprotective property of the extracts has been attributed to the free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities.

Antibaclcrial screening of crude juices of different plant parts of five ornamental plants was performed against three human and two plant pathogenic bacteria. Out of 11 tested crude juices, the flower juice of Cassia fistula showed maximum and broad-spectrum antibactrial activity against all the five pathogens especially against Streptococcus mutans (11mm of I.Z.) followed by that of Linaria leaf and flower juices. The crude juice of Linaria leaves recorded 10 mm of inhibition zone, which was at par to the reference antibiotic zone of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Out of five lest pathogens, 5. mutatis and Xanthomonas campestris were found to be the most sensitive human and plant pathogenic bacteria respectively.

Chlorophytum borivilianum, commonly known as safed musli is an endangered medicinal herb valued for its dried, fasciculated storage roots which possess immunomodulatory and aphrodisiac properties that forms an important ingredient of herbal tonics. Efficient micropropagation of C. borivilianum employing liquid medium has been achieved. In the case of employing liquid medium, while on the one hand lesser amount of medium is consumed, on the other hand shoot growth and multiplication response were better than in solid medium. The basic nutrient medium (MS) Murashige and Skoog (1962) supplemented with different phytohormone concentrations viz. cytokinins "BAP (0.5-5mg/l), kinetin (0.1 -0.5mg/l), alone and with combination of auxins (NAA 0.1-1 mg/l) with 3% sucrose and 4.5 gm/l agar" were used. The pH of the medium was adjusted between 5.5-5.8 by using 0.1 N HCl or 0.1 N NaOH before sterilization. The cultures were maintained at a temperature range of 25±2 °C and the photoperiod of 16 hrs by using white fluorescent light (2000-3000 Lux).

Fusarium wilt of pigeonpea caused by Fusarium udum is an important soil borne disease and is a major constraint in pigeonpea production. In vitro evaluation of antagonistic microorganisms were taken to know the efficacy against F. udum. Among the fungi tested, T. harzianum and T. viride each showed strong antagonism with inhibition zone of 2.2 mm and 3.4 mm, respectively. A.flavus, A. niger and Penicillium sp. showed moderate antagonism with complete inhibition of F. undum. Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens showed antagonism by producing inhibition zone of 3.5 mm and 7.5 mm inhbition zone, respectively aganist F. udum. Streptomyces sp. was found to be most effective with inhibition zone of 13.2 mm on F. udum. Maximum Fusarium udum inhibition was recorded in T. viride with 87.03 per cent inhibition followed by T. harzianum (85.40%), P. fluorescens (81.87%) and least inhibition of 49.57 per cent was observed by A. flavus.

Callus cultures were initiated from seeds of three genotypes of pearl millet namely X 7, CoHCu 8 and UCC 23 on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2,4-D and kinetin. Early callusing was observed on MS medium supplemented with 2,4-D (2.0 mg/L) + Kinetin (0.5 mg/L) in UCC 23. Among the different hormonal combinations, 2, 4-D (2.0 mg/L) + Kinetin (0.5 mg/L) shows good response in callus induction compare to other concentration and combinations. MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg L1 BAP + 0.5 mg L 1 IAA for shoot formation and 1.0 mg L 1 IBA + 1.5 mg L 1 IAA for root formation were superior to other hormonal combinations in terms of regeneration of the calli derived from the seeds of UCC 23.

Malathion proved algicidal to Tolypothrix sp. and Nostoc punctiforme at 4.0 and 5.0μm ml-1 respectively. Addition of glucosc and acetate relieved the toxic effect significantly. The effect of Malathion on akinete formation, heterocyst differentiation and various macromolecules were studied, under investigation.

Bacopa monnieri, Striga angustifolia, Sopubia delphinifolia & Stemodia viscosa are the common weed species belongs to scrophulariaceae. The seeds of all the four weed species were collected from agriculture fields. The exomorphological features viz., surface ornamentation of seed coat, seed shapes, colour, hilum shape and position etc., were examined under light and scanning electron microscope. The seeds of four species were described, illustrated and compared. All the micromorphological characters proved to be stable and dependable. A key to genera considered in this work is provided using exclusively seed characters, which will be useful for the accurate identification of weed seeds.

Three dyes namely Neutral Red (NR), Brilliant Cresyl Blue (BCB) and Phenosafranine were used in studying the vitality of xylem ray parenchyma cells in three heartwood producing trees. The capacity of the cells to take up and accumulate the stains decreased from sapwood to transition zone in heartwood trees. Phenosafranine, a dye used for staining the dead cells, showed metachromatic property by staining the living parenchymatous cells yellow.

Methanolic extract of edible parts of certain ethno medicinal plants(10 Nos.), growing in state Tripura, India, which are used by tribal people, were physicochemically characterized and screened for antifungal activity against Candida alb/cans and also for CNS depressant property in mice. It was found that extracts were able to exhibit antifungal activity except 03 extracts. Among them, extract of l. aquatica showed zone of inhibition 1.6 cm, which was nearer to the effect of standard. Extracts of S. torvum and L spinosa showed CNS depressant property in 100mg/kg body weight comparable to the effect of standard in 5mg/kg body weight.

After completion of twelve days incubation period , filtered fungal biomass/mycelium drying in oven for 24 hour's at 50°C. The fungal biomass with and without FYM treated was weight out and recorded for observing effect of growth on different amount of carbon source of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma lignorum under LSF conditions. A range of substrate concentration of sorghum bran from 1 to 6%. Amended with FYM extracts gave maximum growth of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma lignorum respectively followed by without FYM amended growth of Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma lignorum at 4% substrate concentrations. It was found that the growth of both Trichoderma species increasing concentration of the substrate upto 4%. Both the species prefer 4% substrate concentration as well as treated with FYM. A higher percentage (6%) substrate reduced the growth of both the Trichoderma with FYM amended.

The virus infected stem specific proteins associated with healthy stem were encoded by virus genome.

Three Species of fungi viz., Diplocladiella scleroides Arnauld, Dwayaangam dichotoma Nawawi and Isthmotricladia laeensis Matushima are being reported for the first time from Maharashtra. Brief notes are given for each taxon. Geographical distribution of these fungi in India is also provided.

Mercury exists in organic and inorganic forms and they differ in biological activity. Treatment of mercuric acetate to germinating peanut (Arachis hypogaea, L) seeds affected germination. A decrease in germination rate was noticed with increase in mercuric acetate concentration and the lowest percentage was observed at 10-2 M under repeated treatments. With increasing concentration of mercuric acetate, total chlorophyll content, total sugar content, protein content and lipid content decreased indicating the inhibitory effect of mercury.

Rumen fungus Orponomyces sp. was cultured anaerobically at 39 C in specified fungal media and morphological and metabolic characteristics were studied. Orponomyces sp was found as a polycentric fungus with globose or elongated oval sporangium that releases variable shaped poly flagellate zoospores upon bursting. The fungus was observed to produce higher amount of formate and acetate with lower proportion of lactate compared to monocentric fungus and absence of propionate, butyrate and other branched chain fatty acids production. The morphological and fermentation characteristics of Orpinomyces sp indicate that the fungus may have significant role in ruminants fed fibrous diets.

Roots of madder (Rubia tinctorum) are source of anthraquinone dyes with alizarin being the main component. Free alizarin (I) is present in madder root in only small quantities, most of it is present as its glycoside i.e. ruberythric acid(lll) On the basis of the importance of alizarin, in this research, it was isolated, purified and its structure was confirmed by various spectra. Maceration of the powdered madder roots in various polar and non-polar solvents, as well as Soxhlet extraction resulted in the formation of a reddish solid material (5.2% and 14.2% yield, respectively). Successive TLC and column chromatography of the solid material on silica gel with methanol as the mobile phase, gave three fractions with R1 = 0.21, 0.48 and 0.68. The fraction with R1 = 0.68 was the major one. 'HNMR, 13CNMR, IR, UV and Mass spectra of this fraction were taken. On the basis of the results obtained from the spectra, the chemical structure of alizarin was determined and confirmed.

The main constituents of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistilltion of spearmint plant (Mentha viridis) grown in the city of Ahwaz, Iran, were isolated, purified and their chemical structures were determined by using various spectroscopic techniques. (-)- Carvone [(2-Methyl-5-(1-methylethenyl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one)] and Limonene [(1-methyl-4-prop-1-en-2-yl-cyclohexene)] were the major components. GC-MS analysis of the essential oil revealed 17 components with Carvone as the most abundant constituents.

Effective micropropagation protocol has been established to rapidly propagate Chinese foxglove R. angulata. Callus was successfully induced from the explants of hypocotyls on media containing 0.5 mg l-1 BAP and 0.4 mg l-1 NAA; and then adventitious shoots differentiated on the media supplemented with 1 mg l-1 BAP and 0.5 mg l-1 NAA at the initial stage. In shoot proliferation stage, a newly developed Formula β (A+B) based media was more effective than MS salts based media to induce new shoots by approximately regenerating twice as many shoots per explant, while the multiplication rate of roots was nearly three times higher in Formula β than in MS after eight-week culturing. There was no significant influence on the induction of shoots and roots between conventional culture plasticware and a new type of culture container made of high-density polyethylene bags. The roots were induced and formed in the multiplication media after eight weeks of culture before transplanting in the glasshouse and resulted in an efficient and simplified propagation procedure of in vitro culture integrated with white polythene material protection to give stronger and healthier transplantations at the acclimation stage.

A study was carried out to Investigate the effect of substratum (soil-sand amendments cotton and filter paper) and treatment of sulpheric acid on the germination of Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata Nees.) seeds were placed on moistened substratums in different containers under laboratory conditions for germination. 3000 seeds of Andrographis paniculata (100 seeds per container) with three replicates of each were used. The highest germination was recorded in sand (0:1 soil: sand) substratum. Germination was observed to be enhenced by the 25% sulpheric acid pre- treatment. Results of this study may serve as useful information in the production and improvement of this species.

Ethnobotanical survey through questionnaire and personal interviews was undertaken to collect information on the use of medicinal plants from local traditional healers in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu during June 2008 to December 2008. The investigation revealed that, the traditional healers have been using 53 species of plants distributed in 47 genera belonging to 29 families to treat various health problems. The documented medicinal plants were mostly used to cure skin diseases, stomach problems, nervous disorders, diabetes, urinary track infections and diarrhoea. Dominant families recorded in our study are Caesalpiniaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae and Solanaceae with 4 species each and leaves are most frequently used for the treatment of diseases.

The disease consisted of yellow mosaic accompanied with slight curling on leaves. The whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) population was also observed in the vicinity. The characteristic disease symptoms and whitefly population indicated the possibility of begomovirus infection. Leaf morphological characteristics of woody species were examined in tropical rain forest at Kudremukh National Park in the central Western Ghats, India in relationship with ecological and environmental factors. For leaf size analysis, Raunkiaer leaf size classification was adopted. The data was collected from 114 sample plots of the size 31.6 x 31.6 m distributed randomly in the study area. In each plot the proportion of leaf size classes and other leaf morphological characters were calculated and correlated with the ecological and environmental data. A significant correlation of leaf morphological character with percentage evergreeness and in few instances with elevation and rainfall was obtained. Average leaf width decreased with increase in elevation. Mesophyll leaf class dominated the stand, whereas, leptophyll and nanophyll leaf classes are sparingly represented. Proportions of serrate and whorled leaves increased with increase in elevation. A significant effect of percentage evergreeness of the stand was found on leaf size and leaf morphological characters.

Flavonoid rutin (quercetin-3-rutinoside), is a flavonol glycoside comprised of the flavonol quercetin and the disaccharide rutinose. In the study, using HPLC-ED system, quantification of rutin was carried out in different extracts of medicinal plants. Analyses of rutin were performed with leaves and flowers of 50 medicinal plants of rue, buckwheat, rose, sage, calendula, chamomile, elder, dandelion, feverfew, lemon balm, linden, thyme, valerian, stinging nettle, cloves, dog rose, pansy, parsley, cowslip, rose etc. Rutin was extracted with hot water. Supernatant was used for analyses. The standard solution was 0.2 μg/20 μL rutin. Content of rutin (mg/g) was highest in the leaves of rue (86.0) followed by flowers of buckwheat (53.5), the leaves from buckwheat (20.0), flowers of pansy (33.5) and flowers of rose (10.0). In all other plants, the content of rutin was lower than 0.5 mg/g. The lowest content rutin (0.25 mg/g) was found in the leaves of lemon balm. The high concentration of rutin in flowers and leaves of rue, buckwheat, pansy and rose provided more importance to rue, buckwheat, pansy and rose as medicinal and diet plants.

Senescense is a puzzling process it always differs from ageing. It may or not be lead to death .it not only support the degradation process but also promote the growth of new plant parts. Physiological senescense is definitely followed by death while non-physiological not be followed. It is due to definenecy of any essential mineral. It is controlled by several factor, harmones are one of them. Auxin delays the senescense. Generally, higher concentrations of IAA used for visible symptoms of senescense were observed below lOOppm at very high concentration i.e. 400ppm, it becomes non-physiological in both intact and excised conditions. 300ppm of IAA shows maximum delay.

Studies the habitat characteristics and ecological status of Paeonia emodi Wallich ex Royle a high value Himalayan medicinal plant were examined using field investigations in a part of Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, India. Authors surveyed 14 possible habitats occupied by P. emodi. Among them the species was recorded from 3 habitats under the canopy of Quercus floribunda and Mixed Oak deciduous forest. Based on phytosociological study, the density of P. emodi ranged from 1.6 to 2.4 individuals/m2 and frequency from 76 to 80%. Moreover, the result revealed localized distribution of target species in the wild. Considering these preliminary results, more research in possible habitats of the species in different region would clearly give an understanding of its ecology including habitat specificity.

Methanol extract of leaves of Mimosa pudica L. (Mimosaceae) was screened for diuretic and laxative activities in wistar albino rats. The study suggested that the extract was found to produce significant diuretic as well as laxative activities in dose dependant manner (200 and 400mg/kg p.o.). These activities were comparable with the standard drugs such as Furosemide (10mg/kg p.o.) and Agar-agar (300mg/kg p.o.) respectively. The preliminary phytochemical analysis of methanol extract of leaves of Mimosa pudica revealed the presence of phytoconstituents such as alkaloids, tannins, mucilage and flavonoids. The study indicates that the observed significant diuretic and laxative activities of Mimosa pudica leaves may be contributed to the phytoconstituents present in it.

Erythrina indica leaves are traditionally used in Kerala to treat inflammation, ulcers, earache etc. But its therapeutic potential has not been scientifically validated yet. Evaluated the antiinflammatory and analgesic properties of the ethanolic extract of E. indica leaves. Authors observed significant inhibition of carrageenan induced rat paw oedema in the extract treated groups at 250 and 500 mg/kg dose, at 3 h after carrageenan injection. E. indica extract at both the doses (250 & 500 mg/kg) inhibited acetic and acid induced writhing response in mice. In addition authors observed significant antilipid peroxidant effects in vitro by the extract at 50 μg/ml. Phytochemical studies indicated that E. indica contained alkaloids and perhaps they are responsible for the antiinflammatory and analgesic effects.

It was found that the heavy metals show concentration dependent effects. The lower concentrations delay and higher concentration accelerate the petal senescene both in light and in the dark. Further it is noted that the concentrations of Zinc delay petal senescence in light as compared to the dark.

Phytoplankton population from different water bodies of Jotiba (Wadi-Ratnagiri), Maharashtra was studied. Jotiba is a religious place famous by the name of Lord Jotiba. Reports on physico-chemical properties as well as phytoplankton diversity in these water bodies are lacking. An attempt has been made to provide the information on seasonal variation in phytoplankton species. The study reports the dominance of group Chlorophyta. The index values indicate the status of water resources with diversity. The phytoplankton diversity is mainly influenced by seasonal conditions, rituals and anthropogenic activities in Jotiba.
