Experimental studies on behavioural responses of fish, Heteropneustes fossilis exposed to mercury toxicity were conducted. Fish behavioural responses of fish to mercuric toxicity were based on relative fish mortality, opercular movements, locomotary activity and fish body movements. The present experiment suggested that the increased concentration of mercury chloride the frequency of stress behaviour was observed increase when concentration is decrease the frequency of behaviour was also decrease. Therefore, it is concluded that the behavioural responses in fish may be utilized as rapid assessment technique in biomonitoring study by the environmental workers to acquire immediate preliminary information in relation to quality of effluent or polluted water.

Neurotoxic effects of morphine on the relative distribution of acetyl cholinesterase in the spinal cord (cervical region) of desert bat, Rhinopoma microphyllum were investigated. It was observed that there appears to be an increase in AChE activity accompanied by marked accumulation of fluid and irregular distribution of reaction product in the motoneurons of gray matter of spinal cord. Besides , AChE staining was also intense in several discrete areas of motor nuclei of gray column of ventral horn and substantia gelatinosa of dorsal horn denoting vigorous enzyme activities. On the other hand, in untreated desert bats, AChE activity seems to be relatively less marked in the spinal cord of cervical region being mostly concentrated in the motor cell groups of ventral horn.A possible functional significance of AChE activity in relation to specific distribution pattern among different motor cell groups of spinal cord as well as toxicity induced changes have been elucidated.

Chromosomal analysis of two species of Indian birds, Vanellus spinosus (Charadriiformes) and Lanius cristatus (Passeriformes) showed their 2n values to be 58 and 72 respectively. In Vanellus spinosus there are 11 pairs of macrochromosomes (7 pairs of m-type, one pair of sm-type, 2 pairs of t-type and ZW) and 18 pairs of microchromosomes. In Lanius cristatus there are 10 pairs of macrochromosomes (one pair of m-type, 3 pairs of sm-type, 5 pairs of t-type and ZW) and 26 pairs of microchromosomes. In both the species Z chromosome is m-type and W chromosome is sm-type. The total chromosomal length in V. spinosus and L. cristatus are 36.76 μm and 40.05 μm respectively.

To study the effect of terbutalin, a β-agonist, on the growth performance of female Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica), two weeks old chicks were supplemented with 10 ppm terbutalin in drinking water over a period of two months. The results indicated that terbutalin did not affect the weight gain, however, a highly significant (p<60>0.001) decrease in food consumption and fat pad in treated quail was observed as compared to control. Results also indicate that plasma triglyceride level increased significantly (p<60>0.01), but the blood urea nitrogen level decreased (p<60>0.001) as terbutalin treatment proceeded indicating that most of the nitrogen gets utilized in protein synthesis. Taken together, it is suggested that β-agonist brings about the mobilization of fat and availability of amino acids for protein synthesis, thus providing leaner meat.

Supplementary feeding is an important tool for augmenting fish production. Protein is the most important nutrient promoting growth in animals, because it has direct influence on growth. Protein is the costliest among various ingredients used for preparation of fish feeds. It is necessary to ascertain the quantitative requirement of dietary protein in order to reduce the cost of feeds. Earthworm has crude 72% protein which is quite cheaper. Keeping this point in mind, a study has been carried out to study the effect of earthworm meal on the growth of Catla catla fry. Two locally available species i.e. Metaphire posthuma and Amynthas gracilis were selected for experimental meal and fish meal was taken as control. The meal was prepared so as to contain 30% protein by weight and feed was supplemented once in a day to the fry. Increase in body length was 2.8 times, 2.55 times and 2.24 times higher in Metaphire, Amynthas and fish meal fed fry respectively as compared to the initial body length. Body weight increased 5 times in Metaphire fed fry as compared to control after 60 days. 12.54%, 12.2% and 11% increase in protein was noticed in Metaphire, Amynthas and fish meal fed fry respectively. Increase in carbohydrate in Metaphire fed fry was greater by 2% as compared to Amynthas meal and lipid content was high in the same by 3%. Maximum decrease in moisture content was noticed in Amynthas fed fry. Earthworm meal yielded better growth than fish meal. Between Metaphire meal and Amynthas meal, Metaphire posthuma gave better results.

The host feeding patterns of Coquillettidia crassipes were analysed as part of studies conducted on the vectors of JE and filariasis in the Kuttanadu region of Kerala State. Blood-fed Cq. crassipes female mosquitoes were collected from outdoor resting habitats by using hand catch method during dusk hour and also by using drop-net method. A total of 28 blood-fed Cq. crassipes were smeared and agarose gel diffusion method was used to identify blood meals from these mosquitoes. Sera were tested against the anti-sera to cow, pig, duck, goat, fowl and human. Results revealed that Cq. crassipes is an ornithophilic mosquito since 46.3% (fowls 32%, ducks 14.3%) of the Cq. crassipes had fed on birds. Only one specimen had fed on cattle. The blood meals of half of the Cq. crassipes mosquitoes collected remains unknown. Coquillettidia crassipes may play a role as enzootic vectors in the maintenance of arthropod-borne viruses during inter-epidemic period in an enzootic cycle involving birds as amplifying hosts.

First to fifth instar larvae of Corcyra cephalonica were fumigated with CO₂ for durations of 10, 20, 30 and 45 min. Fifth instar larvae which received a first dose of fumigation for 30 min, were given an additional, second dose of fumigation for varying durations, at 60, 120 and 180 min interval after the first fumigation. Fumigated first instar larvae blacked out quickly and revived slowly compared to the older instars. Upon revival, the fourth and fifth instar larvae spun silken cocoons faster than the first instar. There were significant changes in the tissue protein profile of the larvae exposed to the two different fumigation schedules.

The activity of median eminence were studied following administration of 5-HTP and L-DOPA at 12 hr interval in spotted munia, Lonchura punctulata during quiescent phase of breeding cycle. Gomori's chrome-alum hematoxyline-phloxin (CHP) staining technique, as described by Pearse (1960), were used for the localization of neurosecretory materials stored in the lobe of median eminence. There was a very less amount of neurosecretory materials in the group of birds treated with normal saline twice a day. On the other hand the group treated with 5-HTP and L-DOPA at 12 hr. interval showed large amount of stored neurosecretory materials in comparison to saline treated control group. The study strongly support the hypothesis that specific phase-relation of circadian neural oscillations (i.e. serotonergic and dopaminergic) may determine seasonality and may be manipulated by timed daily injection of neurotransmitter affecting drugs given at specific time interval.

A mark-recapture experiment was carried out in Kotdwar (Pauri-Garhwal) locality to determine whether Anopheles culicifacies exhibits memory by investigating if the individuals would return to the habitat where they had obtained. In all, 577 specimens were collected from both human dwelling and cattle shed then marked with different colours according to whether they were caught in human dwelling, 'human fed' or in cattle sheds, 'cattle fed' from fixed habitat. Thereafter they were released from another location. Over 420 specimens of An. culicifacies were collected over the next 10 days of the experiment and examined individually whether they were marked ones or not. In total, 5.71% of released mosquitoes were recaptured; of these 72.7% (24 of 33) returned to the habitat where they were first caught, thus demonstrating site-fidelity. Results further indicated that mosquitoes seeking cattle were more faithful (75.0%, 18 of 24) in returning to their original habitat than those seeking human habitation (66.6%; 6 of 9).

The immature survival, pre-imaginal development and reproductive potential of a ladybeetle, Coccinella transversalis Fabricius, were investigated at 20, 25, 27, 30 and 35 °C temperature, using aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover as a prey. Rate of development increased with increase in temperature from 20 to 35 °C. The theoretical lower thermal threshold for development and the thermal constant was 9.04°C and 245.10 day-degrees, respectively. The pre-imaginal development was lowest at 20 °C and highest at 35 °C. The per cent larval survival, adult emergence and growth index also increased with increase in temperature from 20 to 27 °C and thereafter decreased upto 35 °C. Maximum fecundity and percent viability of eggs was recorded at 27 °C and minimum at 35 °C. Thus, 27 °C was the optimum temperature for the survival, development of immature stages and reproduction of C. transversalis.

The infection patterns showed highest infection percentage in Trichogaster fasciatus and lowest in the Heteropneustes fossillis, while the infection was nil in Catla catla. The infection incidence was correlated with season and size of the host fish. Medium sized fishes were found heavily infected, while small size fishes of most of the genera were found free of infection.

Food and feeding habits of mahseer vary due to great variance of planktonic biomass and primary productivities in different aquatic riverine systems. The spectrum of different foods in riverine system depends on many environmental factors and showed selective feeding in fish. The study showed that abiotic and biotic components of riverine system have changed,the qualitative and quantitative food spectrum, hence the mahseer, Tor putitora prefers selective in feeding habit based on quantitative seasonal food organisms. The total length range from 252-480 mm and 234-465 mm of mahseer were examined for analyse food and feeding habits in upstream and downstream, respectively. The plant-animal ratio were observed 0.43,0.47 and 1.45 in gut content of upstream's fishes while the ratio 0.14,0.24 and 0.17 found in the fishes of downstream in all three season i.e. summer, rainy and winter season. The Gastrosomatic index value of Tor putitora extend from 0.585-2.418 and 0.780-3.500 while, relative length of gut varies from 1.349-2.541 and 1.196-2.064 in upstream and downstream section indicated that the feeding behaviour of Tor putitora was carni-omnivorous in upstream and carnivorous in downstream of barrage in Ganga river.

The length-weight relationship of all the three species was close to the cubic law with 'b' values of 2.7473,2.8592 and 3.0695 for rohu, catla and mrigal respectively, indicating isometric growth of the fishes in the beel. The mean relative condition (Kn) values of rohu, catla and mrigal were found to be 1.02,1.0227 and 1.03, respectively.

Nitrifying bacterial suspension proved to be relatively more powerful for enhancing the growth and production of fish. Denitrifying bacterial population is also showed better result than the result obtained from control pond. Effect of bacterial suspension both nitrifying and denitrifying along with locally available organic manure (semi dried cow dung) in case of experimental ponds and only semi dried cow dung for control pond, obtaining from the experiment conducted for two years for the growth, production and survivility of Catla catla. There are various factors causing variation of growth, production and survivility these are temperature, food, size or age, season, maturity and.other environmental parameters. In the investigation, the percentage of growth had been relatively higher in nitrifying bacterial suspension with semi dried cow dung treated ponds. In Catla catla initial weight was 1.62 - 1.70g and increased upto highest (experimental pond 2) 498.52g in the first year (r = 0.991701, p<60>0.05) and initial weight was 2.02-2.63g and increased upto 505.89g (EP 2) in the second year (r = 0.991366, p<60>0.05). In EP 3 and EP 4 initial weight was 1.70g and 1.65g and increased upto highest in EP 4 222.82g in the first year (r = 0.997, p<60>0.05) and also highest in the second year 226.49g (r = 0.993, p<60>0.05). These results are significantly higher than those in control pond for both the year of experiment.

Male accessory gland secretions, which have a role to play in reproduction, have been investigated. The quantity of male accessory gland secretory proteins in relation to the body size has been studied in nine strains of three species. The study reveled that the quantity of accessory gland secretory proteins are significantly different in different species. There is positive correlation between the body size and the quantity of accessory gland secretory proteins, except in some cases.

The biology of parasitoids Encarsia transvena (Timberlake) and Eretmocerus mundus (Mercet) on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) on brinjal and Trialeurodes ricini (Misra) on Phyllanthus acidus was studied. It was observed that both the parasitoids reared on B. tabaci did not oviposit and develop on T. ricini and vice versa. Though the species are morphologically similar the above phenomenon indicates that these species may be biologically different races. The mean development period for Er. mundus of B. tabaci was found to be 14-16 days in May and 17-22 days in October, and En. transvena of B. tabaci it was 13-16 days in May and 15-19 days in October. Similarly the developmental period for Er. mundus of T ricini on P. acidus was found to be 13-19 days in May and 15-20 days in October, and for En. transvena of T. ricini the developmental period was 11-18 days in May and 13-19 days in October. The fecundity of Er. mundus and En. transvena was high on T. ricini than on B. tabaci. Both the parasitoids preferred third instar nymphs for oviposition.

Laboratory studies on biology of Little Gourd leaf eating caterpillar, Diaphania indica Sounders revealed that the pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition periods on an average lasted for 2.0, 5.1 and 1.5 days respectively. A female laid on an average 187.1 eggs. The average egg, larval, prepupal and pupal stages lasted for 4.75, 11.9, 1.3 and 9.4 days, respectively. The female to male sex ratio was 1.08:1. The longevity of adults varied from 8.45 to 9.0 days. The mean developmental period from oviposition to emergence of adults ranged from 23 to 33 days with an average of 27.35 days.

Wiretailed Swallow Hirundo smithii filifera was observed breeding and rearing its brooding in a saucer shaped mud nest attached to the shade wall of veranda of a store building surrounded by crop fields of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The clutch size was three and the average egg size was 18.42 x 13.12 mm in the said study. The egg incubation period and nestling period was recorded as 15 and 16 days respectively. The parent birds were noticed rearing their nestlings on the insect food obtained from the paddy fields.

The efficacy of new insecticides against citrus leaf miner, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton was compared with commonly used insecticides along with neem-based formulations. Among different insecticides evaluated cypermethrin, fenvalerate, monocrotophos, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, λ-cyhalothrin and profenofos + cypermethrin were found effective in preventing fresh mining by P. citrella. Neem formulations viz., neem seed kernel extract, azadirachtin were found superior in causing high mortality of leaf miner larvae. The adult emergence was also found lowest in all synthetic insecticidal and neem seed kernel extract treated plants. The study clearly showed that under heavy infestation, use of synthetic insecticides is necessary to prevent reinfestation of leaf miner. However, the neem formulations can be used as follow-up sprays under heavy infestation and as prophylactic sprays during new flush emergence.

A case study was performed among the 120 randomly selected human subjects from the Patancheru Industrial area, Hyderabad (A.P), inorder to asses the mutagenic potentialities of the industrial chemicals present in the effluents by adopting the standard cytogenic protocols such as chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges. Even 80 unexposed subjects were also collected for comparison (control). Over all results reveal that a significant increase in CA's and SCE's among the residents of Patancheru as against control subjects.

The cuticular structures on the head of Gerris sp. and Cloeon sp. have been studied by scanning electron microscopy. While the head cuticle of Gerris sp. is clothed with dense hairs and a variety of sensory structures, the cuticle of Cloeon sp. is comparatively simple. It is beset with numerous scales and only two types of microstructure. The probable functions of these cuticular structures have been discussed.

Electrophoretic separation of serum lactate dehdrogenase of healthy, Heteropneustes fossilis and Clarias batrachus was carried out on CAM, vernol buffer. In serum of H.fossilis, two clear fractions were detected with considerable distance between them, and with almost equal staining capacity. In serum of C. batrachus, variable LDH isozyme pattern was observed. Only one fraction was observed in fish with gray belly, two fractions with black belly and three fractions in fish with spots on the belly. These variations may be related to genetic and environmental factors.
