The results on seasonal incidence of Sapota seed borer, Trymalitis margarias Meyrick revealed that the larval population fluctuated throughout the year with two peak periods of infestation, i.e., first in May (22.76 per cent infestation) and second in December (13.8 per cent infestation). Its intensity was lowest in July and August with 2.0 per cent infestation. The biology of T. margarias indicated that the female moth laid 7 to 272 eggs with an average of 161.3. The pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition periods on an average lasted for 1.73, 1.80 and 1.10 days, respectively. The duration of egg, larval, prepupal and pupal stages lasted for an average of 10.70, 11.58, 17.56 and 12.4 days, respectively. The sex ratio of male to female was 1:1.13. The adults survived for a period of 3.00 to 5.25 days. The total period required to complete one life cycle from egg laying to emergence of adults varied from 31.33 to 36,00 days with an average of 34.5 days.

A herd was monitored for two years in order to determine the effect of body condition score on the reproductive performance of Zebu cows managed under continuous mating in the tropics of Mexico. Overall cyclicity and pregnancy rates were 60.5% and 37.1% at four months postpartum, respectively. 62.9 percent of the cows were non-pregnant and of these more than 60% were in true anoestrus. Body condition score (BCS) at calving and 60 days postpartum, BCS changes, season and parity `had significant effects (P<60>0.05) on cyclicity and pregnancy at 120 days postpartum. The odds of a cycling or pregnant cow at 120 days postpartum improved with increasing BCS grades. Cows calving in the dry or rainy season had lower odds (0.5 and 0.7, respectively) than those calving during the windy and rainy season. First calving cows had the worst performance, no differences being observed among multiparous cows.

One of the most common ways of surface and ground water contamination from hazardous metal wastes is through its leachates. Developmental toxicity is a meaningful parameter allowing an integrated evaluation of the potential danger of leachates. The administration of leachates in pregnant mice of embryogenesis phase (i.e. 6-15 days of gestation period) by oral feeding caused a significant reduction in number of implantation, number of fetuses and an increase in number of resorptions but the pre and post implantation loss percentage also increased. No significant visceral abnormality was observed in the mother mice. The mice of fetogenesis phase (i.e. group 4) treated by leachates of metal industries also showed a significant post implantation loss percentage. These findings suggested that leachates of metal-based industries might cause a significant effect on embryogenesis/organogenesis phase and fetogenesis phase.

Proteins and glycoproteins are described in different layers, using histochemical and whole mount techniques, in an attempt to understand structural and functional modifications in epidermis of upper/anterior and lower/posterior lips in Barilius vagra and Garra lamta (Cyprinidae), Homaloptera brucei (Homalopteridae) and Glyptothorax pectinopterus (Sisoridae) in relation to life torrential streams. In B. vagra, epidermis is equipped with elevations separated by non-elevated smooth regions in lower lip. It is, however, smooth in upper lip of this fish and in both the lips of H. brucei and G. pectinopterus. In G. lamta, epidermis is provided with papillae separated by interpapillary regions in both lips and is composed of mainly the epithelial cells. Surface cells at papilla region in G. lamta and at rough epidermis in G. pectinopterus, form unculi. Epidermis at elevated and uncular region is composed of mainly epithelial cells. Smooth epidermis, in addition, also possesses gland cells. Outermost layer of epidermis at elevated, papillary and uncular regions of lips is truly keratinized as shown by presence of cysteine bound sulphhydryl (-SH) groups, cystine bound disulphide (-SS) groups, calcium and a positive reaction with Papanicolaou's stain for keratin. Presence of well developed lymphocytes in epidermis in both lips of B. vagra, H. brucei and G. pectinopterus has been correlated with local defence mechanism. Mucous cells secrete sulphated and non-sulphated acidic glycoproteins. There appears to be an inverse relationship between degree of keratinization and density of slime secreting glands. In G. lamta and G. pectinopterus, unculi prevent fish from slipping and protect it from being washed away in fast flowing streams. They also help in feeding by rasping algal slime from the stones.

Golgi body has been studied qualitatively with the help of light microscope. Thyroid gland undergoes marked cyclic changes. As the gonadal activity increases, the thyroid follicles becomes empty releasing the hormone to increase the rate of gametogenesis. When most of the follicles are empty, the thyroid gland is at the peak of its activity. The concentration of Golgi body increases gradually in the accumulation phase, however, there is decrease in the concentration of Golgi body during discharge phase and in post breeding, the Golgi body becomes indistinct.

G. convexiusculus, a herbivorous snail is not only the pest of most of the aquatic vegetation and is efficiently deteriorating the environmental conditions of the corresponding freshwater bodies but also acts as an intermediate host in the life history of some pathogenic trematodes. It also laid a large number of egg masses containing the large number of viable egg capsules which developed into fertile adults within a month. The investigation was performed to control the fecundity of this pathogenic snail, all developmental stages pesticides like Boygon and Nuvan in sub lethal doses. From cleavage to are hatching stages exhibited development arrest in most of the egg capsules due to the depletion in protein fractions in comparison to control groups. This resulted in high percentage of mortality and low percentage of hatchability in treated groups.

The target protein is SopE [histidine-tagged] expressed in Escherichia coli. AKTAFPLC controlled by UNICORN software was used at cold room temperature for one-step purification and for characterization of an integral membrane protein in the presence of non-ionic detergents. Detergent extracts of bacterial membranes were applied to HiTrap chelating. The charge and and size homogeneity of the purified protein was assessed under non-denaturing conditions, in the presence of non-ionic detergent by anion exchange chromatography on Mono Q HR 5/5 and by gel filtration on Superdex HR 10/30. A single sharp peak was observed for both fractions upon salt gradient elution of proteins absorbed to the ion-exchanger, but minor peaks were detected for the low-imidazol. Similarly, gel filtration gave essentially one single peak corresponding to monomeric protein. These results indicate that the preparations were homogenous in size and charge. The above procedure clearly shows that one-step method is possible for purification and characterization of integral membrane protein through chromatography in low temperture and also with non-ionic detergents.

Chemosterilant activity of some variants of precocenes, naturally occurring chromenes in plants belonging to Ageratum sp. have been evaluated in the red cotton bug Dysdercus sp. in an attempt to explore alternate strategies to chemical control of insect pests. They have shown remarkable results as reproduction inhibiting agents in the test insect which were topically treated as 24-36 hr. old adults with different doses of the compound in acetone, depending upon their LD₅₀ values. Analysis of data revealed significant reduction in fecundity and fertility of the bug. The naturally occurring precocene (precocene II) was used as the standard compound for comparison of results with those obtained with synthetic compounds. Synthetic precocenoids were effective at very low doses like 1-4μg per adult whereas 80-85 μg per adult Precocene II was required to induce sterility in the bugs. Among the syntheti derivatives 8-acetyl-7-hydroxy-5-methoxy-dimethlylchromene (Alloevodinal) was the most effective.

Prototype expert system has been developed for selection of a suitable hotel waste management system. Hotel industry increased vigorously during last two decades in most of the urban areas in India. The survey of some hotels (Grade I, II, III) as well as some of the 5 star hotels in metropolitan cities showed that various kinds of solid wastes get generated and thrown out in nearby area without caring for any kind of treatment. These wastes can be grouped as dry waste and wet waste. Amongst the various methodologies for treatment of the solid waste from hotels, the reuse and recycling methodology for dry waste vermicomposting method for treatment of wet biodegradable solid waste and were found to be most suitable, feasible and economical. It is pollution free and natural process. The entire quantity of solid waste get converted into good quality organic manure. The process is very simple and has greater flexibility in scale of operation. The process is aerobic and the microbial decomposition oxidises the organic matter to a fairly stable state, resistant to odour production. The vermicompost is a valuable product when used as a soil conditioner. It is a source of micro and macro elements in addition to many important biochemicals, which are required for the growth of plant. This compost can be used for any type of crop, plants and trees. The process requires not much external energy. The compost can be enriched with additional bacteria and microelements.

It was observed that at 100% concentration of plant extracts in acetone exhibited maximum phagodeterrent activity which was 92%, 90% and 74.4% whereas 89.98%, 88.14% and 73.6% phagodeterrent activity was observed in petroleum ether solvent extract respectively.

An attempt has been made to make out direction of ootheca elaboration among cassidines to improve its protective value. It is inferred that these changes have taken place independently a number of times among the cassidines.

The acute toxicity of chloronicotinyl nitrogunanide insecticide, imidacloprid was examined against workers of the subterranean termites, Odontotermes obesus, by paper contract method for determining the Median Lethal Concentration (LC₅₀ : 0.039±0.5 mg.cm^-2). The effect of imidacloprid on acetylcholinesterase (AChE: EC 3.1.1.7) activity and locomotor behaviour (velocity per unit time) of LC₅₀ exposed termites was estimated at regular intervals of 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 hrs. The results indicated that the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity was not exceedsed more than 50% even after 24 hrs exposure, which is contrary to the mode of action of organophosphorous and carbamate insecticides. However, the locomotor behaviour (velocity) of exposed termites in all the intervals was greatly influenced by the toxicant. The 50% reduction in locomotor activity of workers was observed at 11.42 hrs of exposure tenure. Based on the present study, we conlude that imidacloprid could be a potential candidate to control the subterraneon termites.

Control tub was maintained without earthworms. The harvested compost obtained through the degradation action of L. mauritii was adjudged as the best based on the physical structure and the nutrient status of N (1.81%), P (0.89%) and K (1.12%) of the compost.

In the traditional medicinal practices in Meghalaya (Northeast India) aqueous concoction of the powders of the dried rhizome of Stephania glabra and aerial root of Trichosanthes multiloba is used as anthelmintic against intestinal worms. To ascertain their efficacy, the alcoholic crude extracts of these materials were tested against the various helminth parasites - nematode: Heterakis gallinarum,Ascaridia galli,Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Ascaris suum; cestode: Raillietina echinobothrida and trematode: Fasciolopsis buski in dosages ranging between 25-100 mg/ml in 0.9% phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.2) at 38 ± 1°C. The controls, kept in PBS, survived for average 22 h (trematode), 72 h (cestode) and 55-<62>380 h (nematodes). Treatment with S. glabra showed pronounced effect on the cestode and trematode; a dose-dependent gradual decline in physical motility was observed in R. echinobothrida and F. buski. The isolated active principle (Compound X) of the rhizome pulp also showed good efficacy against F. buski. In contrast, much less effect was revealed in respect of nematodes; in treatments with 50 mg/ml all the smaller nematodes attained paralysis within 7-10 h, whereas A. suum remained unparalyzed even after 40 h. In treatments with Trichosanthes alone the onset of paralysis in all the test worms took much longer than Stephania, though in concoction of the two crude extracts the paralytic effect was discernible in less than half the time taken for individual treatments. The phytochemical(s) of S. glabra seems to be effective against platyhelminth parasites that have a tegumental interface, but not so against cuticle-covered nematodes.

The river was well saturated with dissolved oxygen throughout the study period. A negligible amount of free carbondioxide was present which varied from 0.69 to 0.99 ppm. Throughout the study period pH remained alkaline. The total hardness varied from 51.45 to 68.16 ppm. Dissolved oxygen and total zooplankton showed direct correlations.

An aphidophagous ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata Linnaeus was reared for four generations in the laboratory at temperature 25±2°C, R. G. 60±5% and photoperiod 12L: 12D on aphid species Rhopalosiphum maidis, Aphis gossypii, Aphis craccivora and Lipaphis erysimi and thereafter fertility and mortality life-tables were constructed. The net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase was highest in fourth generation and lowest in first generation, whereas the doubling time and generation time was lowest in fourthgeneration and highest in first generation. The highest mortalities in egg, first, second, third, fourth instar and pupa, were recorded during first generation and the lowest during fourth generation. The overall per cent mortality prior to adult stage and trend index was highest in first generation and lowest in fourth generation. Total mortality vlue (Kappa value) was highest (0.5814) in first generation and lowest (0.2980) in fourth generation. First instar faced maximum mortality in the immature stages.

It differs from all the known species of the genus with the characters : scolex globular with large, oval suckers, mature segment squarish, broader than long, testes 11 in number (7 on poral side and 4 on aporal side) cirrus slightly curved, ovary a single mass, medium, oval, vagina long, posterior or anterior to the cirrus pouch, ootype small, round, ventrolateral to the ovary, paruterine organs, two in each mature segment, in a developing stage.

As many as 60.9% of the fowls (510) examined in twelve localities of district Rampur (during July 2000 to August 2002) were found infested with one or other kind of Phthiraptera. The order of prevalence of seven species has been found to be Menopon gallinae (51.3%) <62> Goniocotes gallinae (25.4%) <62> Lipeurus lawrensis tropicalis (15.8%) <62> Lipeurus caponis (11.5%) <62> Menacanthus cornutus (8.1 %) <62> Goniodes dissimilis (7.9%) <62> Lipeurus heterographus (6.9%). Significant positive correlation existed between mean monthly prevalence rate and mean monthly temperature as well as photoperiod. The prevalence rate was significantly higher on birds having poor health and poor plumage.

Twenty species belonging to nine genera viz., Mocholopyga Diakonoff, Archips Hubner, Clepsis Guenee, Dicelletic Meyrick, Ulodemis Meyrick. Neocalyptis Diakonoff, Meridemis Diakonoff, Homona Walker and Scotiophyes Diakonoff referable to tribe Archipini (Tortricinae) of the family Tortricidae have been collected from the North-West India and dealt with taxonomically. Key to the presently examined genera has been prepared on the basis of characters such as the labial palpi, antennae, abdominal pits, costal fold, wing venation and male and female genitalic characteristics. Further, keys to the species of the genera such as Archips Hubner, Clepsis Guenee, Neocalyptis Diakonoff a Meridemis Diakonoff represented by more than one species have also been furnished. Eight species i.e. archips mertias, A. pseudotermias, A. kangraensis, A. carteri, Clepsis neomelissa, Neocalyptis conicus, Meridemis punjabensis and M. obraztsovi have been reported as a new to science. The species viz., Ulodemis trigrapha Meyrick and Meridemis bathymorpha Diakonoff have been reported for the first time from India. Similarly, the species Mocholpyga humana (Meyrick), Clepsis tricensa (Meyrick), C. melissa (Meyrick), Dicelletis nigritula (Meyrick), Neocalyptis affinisana (Walker) and Meridemis invalidana (Walker) have been collected for the first time from this area. Besides giving an illustrated account of the new species, the genitalic account of already known species i.e. Mocholpyga humana (Meyrick), Archips machlopis (Meyrick), A. termias (Meyrick), Clepsis tricensa (Meyrick), C. melissa (Meyrick),

Two indigenously designed light traps- one a fixed model and the other a portable model, powered by a Solar Photo-Voltage (SPV) System are described. The light source is a 20 W `black-light' tube, which is switched on automatically at dusk, controlled through the SPV system. A timer facilitates automatic operation for pre-set periods. The insects can be trapped into a net-covered, walk-in chamber, from where live insects can be selectively collected on a collection box. Efficiency of the trap is reported on the basis of taxa of insects collected. These traps have several advantages over conventional light traps-facility to operate without electrically, operation for specific time periods, use of a black-light tube for greater effectiveness and facility for collection of live insects.

Studies on pollution abatement of petrochemical wastewater by bioprocess using bacteria have been carried out for optimisation of bioprocess parameters. It is known that the majority of components in most petrochemical products are biodegradable. Biodegradation using bacteria Pseudomonas sp. is an effective treatment solution for petrochemical wastewater. Batch aerobic studies of the bioprocess showed that the bacteria reduces the pollution load maximally by 144 h with pH of 7.5 and temperature 40 °C. The maximum COD and BOD reduction is 87.70 % and 86.80%, respectively, with 85.45 % reduction in phenolic compounds. Maximum sulphide bioreduction is 89.40 %. Maximum total dissolved solids bioreduction is 88.45 % with the bacteria.

The repellent effect of Allium cepa and Citrus aurantium on Tribolium castaneum was higher when compared to other plant product extracts, A treated IBEP showed the highest repellency and CA treated IBEP showed the lowest repellency effect during the 96 hr of exposure period on T. castaneum while it survived in wheat flour. The higher mortality rate T. castaneum was observed in Piper betle than the other plant product powder. The results clearly reflect that the plant products could safely be considered as a potential repellent agent for T. castaneum. Thus, from investigation it concludes that Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ) is the best alternative to chemical control. Many plants possess the repellent properties and these plants may be exploited for controlling insects and pests.
