The composition of amino acids of individual adult honeybee and brood of Apis mellifera L. was determined. An analysis of variance indicated that with the exceptions of glycine, alanine and lysine, the differences in the relative amounts of amino acids in adult worker honeybees from different colonies were not significant (P>.05). On the other hand the amino acid contents of broods of related colonies indicated significant differences (P>0.05) from that of the adult worker honeybees except glycine, valine, cystine and tyrosine. There were no significant differences (P>0.05) in the composition of glycine, lysine and other amino acids among broods from different colonies except alanine. Aspartic acid, glutamic acid, leucine and lysine were the most representative protein amino acids in adult worker honeybees and broods. The similarities between the essential amino acids composition of the honeybees, broods and the pollens, which are its main protein sources, are much greater than the differences.

Distribution of earthworms in the soil may be normal, random or aggregated and is sometimes influenced by the type of soil Earthworms thrive best in moist soils and for this reason there are few worms in arid and semi arid soils. Some earthworms (e.g Glyphirilus, Ocnerodrilus, Malabariare, Thatonia and Perionyx) are very hydrophilous and are usually associated with more or less submerged habitats. Soil pH has a distinct influence on the distribution of earthworms, with most of them preferring neutral soils. Some are known to tolerate acidic or alkaline soil while few others are ubiquitous that can withstand both acid and alkaline soils. Pantodrilus litoralis is known to occur in mud with large content of organic matter and salt, on seashores and margins of estuaries, and brackish water lakes.

Field and laboratory experiments conducted on effectiveness of 5 different insecticides against P. quatuordecimpunctata on hog plum during 2000 revealed that deltamethrin and endosulfan were most effective insecticides followed by phosphamidon, malathion and multineem which gave quick knockdown effect of P. quatuordecimpunctata insect both in the laboratory and field condition. Again, deltamethrin and endosulfan were found to be effective up to 28 days of spray in me field.

Serum concentrations calcium inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase of post-pubertal female mice were estimated colorimetrically at 8, 14, 20, 26 and 32 weeks of age with a view to study the age-dependent modulation of calcium and inorganic phosphorus utilization in senility. Contrary to calcium and inorganic phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase depicted a rise in its serum level at 14 weeks of age followed by subsequent decline at successive ages of investigation. Signifificant variabilities and correlations in chosen hematologic parameters might be attributed to altered biological demand of osteoblast activity in post pibertal female mice.

Vocalization from several primate species appear to function in a representational fashion within the social system. Adult male Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus) utter loud calls whooping consisting of one or more emits. Such emits or phrases are made up of several units showing similar or different structural features. The units involved differ with respect to their physical structure and overall utilization-such vocal patterns are uttered exclusively by mature males living in bisexual troops or in all-male bands and in addition to being part of loud call bouts are emitted during appearance or encounters with terrestrial predators. In spite of the high degree of ritualization whoop call displays are not completely used in form, but also ate open to individual and population specific variation.

Testicular cholesterol contents were studied in Glssogobius giuris (Ham) during non-breeding and breeding periods, after exposing the fish for 14 days to salinity, thiourea and methallibure. An in creased cholesterol content was observed during resting phase. When fish were exposed to 10%, 20% and 30% salinity, cholesterol content decreased during non-breeding phase. It also declined drastically during spawning phase. The cholesterol content increased when fish were exposed to various percent ages of thiourea during resting phase with a further increase in the spawning phase. In methallibure treated fish, testicular cholesterol content also showed a more conspicuous increase, when compared to control.

Antinemic effect of aqueous extracts of weeds viz., P. hysterophorus, A. conyzoides, A. aspera and E. hirta were observed under in vitro conditions against second stage juveniles of root-knot nematode, M. incognita. Among six different concentrations viz., S, S/2, S/4, S/8, S/16 and S/32 of each extract tried, highest per cent mortality i.e. 100% was shown by S concentration of P. hysterophorus and E. hirta after 72 hrs of exposure. Highest concentration i.e. S of A. conyzoides and A. aspera showed 98.02% and 80.1% mortality respectively. The lowest dose i.e. S/32 of P. hysterophorus and A. conyzoides caused 59.9% and 42.2% juvenile mortality while that of A. aspera and E. hirta caused 63.4% and 54.1% mortality respectively after 72 hrs of exposure. Percent mortality caused by these extracts after 24hrs and 48hrs of exposure were also quite encouraging.

During monsoon maximum effect of coal dust do influence productivity in the ponds of all areas except a few. It can not conclude that coal dust, as effluent from mines or fallout affect phytoplankton productivity very much. Role of different net-phytoplanktonic groups in primary productivity was determined by mathematical models.

To develop this barley variety, breeding efforts were made to incorporate resistance genes of yellow rust, CCN alongwith higher yields. This enables a high level of productivity under warmer and CCN problematic areas of Rajasthan, which permits stability and sustenance of production of barley. Pesticides endosulfan and kelthane altered protein metabolism in liver, brain and gill tissues of the fish Clarias batrachus (L.). The total proteins decreased and free ammo acids increased significantly. The enzymes, which are involved in protein metabolism, were altered significantly. This indicates that the catabolic activity of proteins increased causing transient shift from aerobic to anaerobic mode of living to overcome the toxic stress. The increase in activity of deaminases reveals the breakdown of nucleotides to yield excess energy. The altered transaminase activities indicate transferring of amino groups to α-ketoglutarate to form corresponding keto acids for additional energy.

However, the serum protein level decreased in fish due to inhibition of RNA synthesis or increased proteolytic activity During recovery period, the restoration of glucose, protein and cholesterol level was found to be slow and gradual.

A trial was undertaken to determine the effect of plant products as seed soaking treatment on plant growth of cowpea and reproduction of Rotylenchulus reniformis. Neem, castor and karanj products (leaf and seed kernel) were used @ 5,10 and 20 per cent(w/v). Seeds were soaked for 6 hours in each concentration. Untreated and treated chemical checks (carbosulfan 25 EC @ 0.1%) were also maintained for comparative study. All the treatments were replicated four times to test the significance of various treatments. Experimental findings exhibited that seed soaking with aqueous extracts of neem and karanj seed kernel @ 20 per cent proved to be most effective among various plant products tested in improving plant growth of cowpea and minimizing infection of R. reniformis.

Behavioural toxicity of dicofol, a commonly used pesticide, on Anabas testudineus was evaluated. Pesticide treatment has little effect on the positional orientation of the fish during the initial days of exposure. However, alteration in positional orientation was evident from day five of exposure to dicofol. Significant reduction in opercular movement was observed in fishes exposed to the pesticide as compared with control fish. Dicofol treated fish exhibited a declining trend in food intake and foraging behaviour. The ability for sustained swimming in constantly flowing water current declined drastically.

The effects of fluoride on blood cells of the freshwater Indian major carp, Labeo rohita (Ham) was studied with a specific aim to investigate whether presence of excess fluoride in water causes any structural and functional blood cell abnormality. The fish were exposed to different concentrations (5ppm, l0ppm, and 15ppm) of fluoride for a period of 30 days. Ten fish were kept for each concentration and also for control. A significant increase in cell size (more than 70% cells), vacuolization in cytoplasm (more than 50%) and disappearance of cell membrane (approx. in 30% cells) was observed. In some of the cells, a change in the morphology of cells was also noted. The study shows that the deformities observed in cells are directly related to the concentration of fluoride in water.

A study was done on the community analysis of plant parasitic, predators and free living nematodes associated with the vegetable crops in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 28 species were recorded, out of which 11 were plant parasitic, 11 predatory and 6 saprophagous nematodes. Community analysis of three trophic groups was done for parameters like frequency, density, biomass, prominence value and importance values. The frequency and density of the plant parasitic nematodes was always higher than the predatory and saprophagous nematodes. An analysis of the relative biomass of the different tropic groups in the community revealed that it was highest in the predatory group.

The 10 bee frame strength queenless cell builder colonies of A. mellifera were used to study the effect of season and number of grafted larvae on mass rearing of queen bees. Queen cell cups of 9 mm internal diameter and 10 mm depth, primed with royal jelly, were used for larval grafting. Overall larval acceptance was more during spring (74.1%) compared to autumn (56.8%). Higher acceptance (81.7%) was observed when 20 larvae were grafted while acceptance was low (55.6%) when 100 larvae were grafted. Mean emergence of queen bees was significantly higher during spring (68.6%), compared to autumn (53.6%). Emergence of queen bees decreased from 77.5 per cent when 20 queen cell cups were grafted to 49.8 per cent when 100 larvae were grafted. Mean weight of freshly emerged queen bees was significantly higher during autumn (151.1 mg) than during spring (125.0) mg). Significantly heavier queens were reared when upto 40 larvae were grafted (164.3 - 164.6 mg) while lightest queens (88.6 - 109.1 mg) were reared when 100 larvae were grafted.

Fresh fruits of Prunus persica were purchased from local market and after thorough washing, the crude extract was prepared with the help of an electric grinder, Suitable concentrations of 6, 8 and 12% were prepared in distilled water. When tested in vitro all these concentrations caused mortality of A. galli and H. gallinae after a maximum exposure of 9 and 8 hours, respectively, The extract caused significant reduction in glucose uptake, glycogen contents, oxygen consumption, acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterase activity and lactic acid production in both the parasites. The possible mode of action of P. persica is discussed.

Physiologists believe that water soluble ascorbic acid-very well known as vitamin C-lays positive effects on blood cells and synthesis of haemoglobin. Biologically highly important this vitamin having anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant property has been brought to notice by the modern biologists. The present paper deals with the administration of medium and high doses of ascorbic acid among the juvenile and adult rabbits and consequent status of red blood cells and haemoglobin level in their blood.

In the study an effort is made to find out the distribution of diabetic patients in relation to A-B-O blood group population of Bareilly District of Uttar Pradesh. An effort is also made to relate the distribution of diabetic population among different religions. Out of 110 subjects, 63 (53.80%) were males and 47 (43.20%) were females. Blood group distribution is found as 'B' 43 (38.80%) [B⁺ 41 (37.30%) and B^- 2 (1.50%)] > 'O' 32 (29.65%) [O⁺ 31 (28.70%) and O^- 1 (0.95%)] > 'A' 27 (24.20%) [A⁺ 25 (23.30%) and A^- 2 (0.90%)] > 'AB' 8 (7.35%) [AB⁺ 8 (7.20%) and AB^-0 (0%)]. Order of distribution of blood group in diabetes mellitus population according to sex is - 'B' (33.10%), 'O' (3.12%), 'A' (27.99%) and 'AB' (8.80%) and similar order in female is - 'B' (46.30%), 'O' (20.10%), 'A' (19,21%) and 'AB' (5.44%). Order of distribution of blood group in diabetes mellitus population in Hindu is- 'B' > 'O' > 'A' > 'AB' and in Muslim is 'B' and 'A' > 'O' > 'AB' and in Sikhs is - 'B', 'A' and 'O' > 'AB' and in Christians is 'B' > 'O' > 'A' > 'AB'.

Effects of repeated haemolymph withdrawals have been observed on total and differential haemocyte counts in V instar larvae as well as on moulting of both the V larval and pupal instars of Danais chrysippus. While the study revealed a marked reduction in total cell count reaching its lowest in prepupal stage, it exhibited a considerable variation in the relative percentage of various cell types. The repeated removals of haemolymph affected both the pupal and imaginal moultings and caused reduction in the length of body and wings of adult butterflies.

Toxicity study was conducted on Rasbora daniconius to evaluate the toxicity of two pesticides, thiodan and dimecron for 96 hours. LC₅₀ and lethal concentration for dimecron were found to be 9.82 mg/liter and 25.12 mg/liter respectively. For thiodan the LC₅₀ and lethal concentration were found to be 0.28 mg/liter and 1.24 mg/liter respectively. Thiodan was found to be more toxic than dimecron to the fish Rasbora daniconius.

Under laboratory conditions, the brooding specimens of Macrobrachium hendersodayanum released the larvae after 25 to 35 days at a water temperature of 25 ± 3°C. The larval stages consisted of two advanced zoeal forms, a post larva and a juvenile. Feeding started from the stage of post larva when the same became benthotrophic in habit. The presence of a tail fan with 21-23 processes in the first two larval stages is an interesting characteristic of larval development of this prawn. The larval development is of "complete suppression" or "totally abbreviated" type and compares well with the type III development of Sollaud.

The hematology is a dependable diagnostic tool in the treatment of diseases. Scanty work has been done on the effect of chemical fertilizer on avian hematology. Diammonium phosphate (DAP) is extensively used in agricultural and horticultural operations. The excessive use of this fertilizer causes environmental pollution. The DAP contaminated food in Indian myna Acridotheres tristis was found to cause gradual decrease in the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin content, whereas the number of leucocytes increased upto 1000 ppm. Beyond this concentration of DAP a recovery trend was found in counting of blood corpuscles. The decrease in the number of RBC and decrease in the number of WBC was due to disturbance in neurotransmission. DAP toxicity is involved in variety of functions such as synaptic transmission and regulation of hormone secretion. The decrease in the number of leucocyte is also due to macrocytic anemia which in turn might be due to DAP intoxication.

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the effects of prolonged toxicity of one dosage of each of six chemical pesticides, which were sprayed in Benghazi agroecosystem to control target pests, on the body mass and cocoons of the earthworm Aporrectodea caliginosa, a common inhabitant of Benghazi, Libya. The pesticides tried included cypermethrin (pyrethroid), chlorpyrifos (organophosphate), dicofol (chlorinated hydrocarbon), mancozeb (fungicide) and haloxyfopetotyl (herbicide). The sub-lethal dosages selected to determine the body mass of A. caliginosa were based on the LD_{50 value of each pesticide, and an approximately one twentieth of LD50 value of each pesticide was used to determine its toxicity to cocoons and on the rate of hatching. There was an increase in the mean body mass of the control and the pesticide treated worms following 10 weeks of exposure (F=40; p<60>0.01). A significant difference existed in the rates of change of body mass (F=39.35; p<60>0.01) between control and pesticide treated worms and the latter showing significantly higher body mass increment when compared with the former. Variations were observed in the incubation time between the control and the pesticide treated cocoons, which were significant (F=4.4; p<60>0.01). Exploratory concentrations of the pesticides were tested for cocoon survival. Chlorpyrifos was the most toxic where no cocoon hatchings were observed even after III days of incubation. This was followed by methomyl and mancozeb with greater than 73% and dicofol and haloxyfopetotyl with 53% hatching failures. Only cypermethrin seemed to be the least toxic as approximately 80% cocoons survived and hatchings were normal.}

The 10 bee frame strength queenless cell builder colonies of A. mellifera were used to study the effect of season and number of grafted larvae on mass rearing of queen bees. Queen cell cups of 9 mm internal diameter and 10 mm depth, primed with royal jelly, were used for larval grafting. Overall larval acceptance was more during spring (74.1%) compared to autumn (56.8%). Higher acceptance (81.7%) was observed when 20 larvae were grafted while acceptance was low (55.6%) when 100 larvae were grafted. Mean emergence of queen bees was significantly higher during spring (68.6%), compared to autumn (53.6%). Emergence of queen bees decreased from 77.5 per cent when 20 queen cell cups were grafted to 49.8 per cent when 100 larvae were grafted. Mean weight of freshly emerged queen bees was significantly higher during autumn (151.1 mg) than during spring (125.0) mg). Significantly heavier queens were reared when upto 40 larvae were grafted (164.3 - 164.6 mg) while lightest queens (88.6 - 109.1 mg) were reared when 100 larvae were grafted.
