A study was conducted to examine some characteristics of queen bees raised by using Doolittle method and natural queen cells in erzurum conditions. The average lengths of the sealed queen cells, queen weights at emergence, diameters of spermatheca and numbers of spermatozoid were higher in case of honey bees reared by doolittle method as compared to natural queen cell method. However the differences between the two methods regarding pre-oviposition period were not significant. It is concluded that queen bees reared by grafting method (Doolittle method) were superior to queen bees reared by using natural queen cells.

While conducting surveys for potential ornamental fishes in the fresh water bodies of the river Periyar, three specimens of Danio fraseri Hora and Mukerji, were collected from a stream joining to the river Periyar, at Desom, near Alwaye on 6 October 2001. It is the only species so far known under the genus Danio with a hypertrophied lower lip forming a loose flap along the lower jaw. This is a new locality record for Kerala and Southern Western Ghats.

As the life cycles of even commonly occurring worms are not fully documented, the study was undertaken to observe the life cycle pattern of two exotic and an indigenous species of earthworm reared in the laboratory and a comparison was made to evaluate the best suited specles for mass production in situ. As earthworms breed continuously they produce concoons throughout the year - a desirable feature for mass production. Life cycle was studied by counting the number of cocoons, following period of incubation and be counting juveniles during two months period that yielded interesting results. It was found that incubation was found to be minimum in Eudrilus eugeniae (twelve days) followed by Lampito mauritii (13 days) and Eisenia foetida (16 days). The total numer of cocoons were more i.e.181 for Eudrilus, 84 for Eisenia and 24 for Lampito species. First appearance of cocoons was noted on day 6 for Eudrilus eugeniae, on day 10 for Eisenia foetida and on the day 17 for Lampito mauritii. The three species of earthworms differed in their mode of breeding, the exotic was breeding frequently whereas indigenous species at intermittent intervals only. From the point of view of continuous breeding, number of cocoons produced, incubation period, number of hatchilings emerging from the cocoons, Eudrilus eugeniae is beast suited species for mass cultivation followed by Eisenia foetida ad Lampito mauritii.

Acetone extracts of seaweeds viz., Dictyota dichotoma, Enteromorpha clathrata and Caulerpa scalpelliformis were tested for mosquito larvicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus (Say). The 24 hours LC₅₀ values of D. dichotoma, E. clathrata and C. scalpelliformis were 43.71, 45.77 and 59.17 ppm respectively. In this communication, a attempt was made to examine the prospects of utilizing seaweeds for mosquito control program.

Mature specimens of Clarias batrachus were exposed to the blue green algae infested environment for 115 days, and observations were recorded on days 30, 60, 90, 105 and 115. The fish were maintained unfed. Average increase in body length and weight was 4.5±0.35 cm. and 6.0 to 0.51 g respectively, but a decrese in kidney weight by 2346±7.3 was recorded. About half of exposed fish died during experiment while remaining half became sluggish. Control specimens gained 7.0±0.13 cm in length and 0.6±0.9 g in weight but their kidneys showed a decrease in weight in a range of 2763±2.3 mg (mortality was 25% only), when reno-somatic index was compared with the specimens measured and weighed on 0 day.

Low-protein (20.20%) diets were formulated to feed the fingerlings of Channa punctatus (Bloch). Seven feeding treatments were maintained and the fingerlings were fed at 3% BW/d. Studies have revealed that regular feeding on low protein (LP) diet resulted in significantly low growth, while feeding on 1L/3H diets resulted in good growth performance and was equal to the fish fed continuously on high protein (HP) diet. GPR, GER and PER values were low in fingerlings fed on high protein diet daily as compared to those fed on mixed feeding schedule. These studies have indicated the possibility of protein saving without compromising the growth and nutrient retention in C. punctatus. Based on total protein input 12.36% protein can be saved without affecting growth, by adopting the 1L/3H feeding schedule as compared to daily feeding on high protein diet.

Six indigenous larvivorous fishes used for the biological control of mosquito larvae and pupa revealed that Puntius sophore. Colisa fasciata and Punitus ticto are first level larvivores consumed maximum numbers of larvae and pupae in the laboratory condition. Puntius phutunio can alone be considered as second level consumer. However, Colisa lalia and Chanda nama were found to be third level consumers exhibiting low capability of consuming mosquito pupae and larvae.

Five different protein feeds such as 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45% were prepared by usig fish meal, clam meal, wheat flour and rice bran. The results showed that feed consumption, protein consumption, feed conversion efficiency, growth, percentage growth, gross growth and net growth efficiency were higher in feed IV. Moisture, ash and protein content were decreased and carbohydrate and lipid content were increased when the fish was reared in different protein feeds.

Relative toxicity of six organosynthetic insecticides was evaluated against third instar larvae of the fruit-sucking moth, Othresis materna. The LC₅₀ value of BHC was taken as base for comparison and calculation of relative toxicity of other insecticides. Fenevalerate, cypermethrine, methyl parathion, endosulfan and carbaryl were observed to be 238.80, 148.30, 17.90, 8.63 and 2.27 times more toxic as BHC, respectively. Pyrethroid insecticides via. frenvalerate and cypermethrine are most potent against larvae of Othreis materna as compared to organophosphorus, chlorinated hydrocarbous and carbamate insecticides. The insecticides screened could be arranged in the order of toxicity, Fenevalerate (0.000183%) <62> cypermethrine (0.000281%) <62> methyl parathion (0.00244%) <62> endosulfan (0.0043%) <62> carbaryl (0.0149) <62> BHC (0.437%).

Results indicated that while zinc sulphate induced alterations in the values of parameters like protein, glucose and alkaline phosphatase; the simultaneous feeding of polyunsaturated fatty acids helped in the maintenance of near normal values of these parameters.

Ecological study was undertaken in Baskandi lake, an Oxbow lake (24°10'N latitude & 93°15'E longitude) along the course of River Barak, in the Cachar district of Assam during the period from 1988 to 2000 revealed the occurrence of 16 species of aquatic macrophytes comprlsing six free floating, two rooted submerged, six rooted with floating leaves and two rooted emergent categories. Of these, five macrophytic species were found to occur throughout the years, which exhibited seasonal vegetative growth during monsoon to autumn. Macrophytic wet biomass (kg/m²) ranged from 4.4 to 11.4 and showed significant positive correlation with water temperature (r=0.1820).

The erythrocytes of albino mice receiving oral sub-lthal doses of lead showed alteration in surface features and morphology compared with normal cells. The most significant change was the discocyte-erythrocyte transformation, spherocytes reticulocytes were present, although their percentage numbers were not high. Discocyte asymmetry was much increased and working and membrane internalization was prominent. The revival effect of vitamin C in reducing the lead induced abnormalities in erythrocyte cell membrane was noticed.

There are very few reports of Rhinoceroses from the northern states of India. The Indian Rhinoceros lived along the River Ganges from Delhi in the west until 1650, to Mirzapur, Patna and Rajmahal in the east unitl 1850. The animal also existed in the foothills of the Himalaya just sourth of the Nepal borderm and incidentally stragglers from Nepal are still sighted there. The Rhinoceros was noted in the hills of Uttar Pradesh, at Pilibhit up to the 1870, at Kotdwara near Hardwar in 1789, and further west in the 14th century. The four records from the Indus Valley of Pakistan and across the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan, dating up to the 16th century, are summarized.

Detailed morphological studies, including the male and female genitalic structures revealed that the type species i.e. puella Drury of the genus Chionaema Herrich Schaffer is altogether different from detrita Walker, the type species of genus Chionaema with the type species puella Drury is being revived. The genitalic features of five other species i.e. bellissima (Moore), catorhoda Hampson, obliquilineata Hampson, dudgeoni Hampson and alborosea (Walker) of genus Chionaema have also been critically examined. These species completey conform to the characterization of type species of genus Chionaema.

A population study of the Indian Gazelle (Gazella bennetti) was carried out during June and December 2000 in an enclosed area named Gogelao Enclosure at Nagaur District, Rajasthan. In all, 51 herds containing 242 individuals and four solitary males were counted in June and 45 herds with 248 individuals and one solitary male were recorded in Decembers. Mean herd size was 5.06 and 5.61 individuals in June and December respectively. Density was 48.4 animals (Km^-1) in June and 49.6 animals in December.

The maxillary stylets and maxillary palps of three species of mosquitoes belonging to genus Anopheles, viz., Anopheles culicifacies Giles, Anopheles fluviatilis James Anopheles subpictus Grassi have been studied using scanning electron microscope. The studies reveal the presence of lateral teeth and absence of mesial teeth on the maxillary stylets. The number, shape and size of lateral teeth differ in different species. The maxillary palps have been found to bear various capitate pegs which also shows differences in their shpae and size. These discriminatory structures are, however, too minute to be studied under ordinary light microscope. The scanning of their surfaces under electron microscope brings to light the true structure of the teeth and the pegs and makes it possible to compare its structure in different species and genera. The studies so far made on the ultrastructure of maxillary teeth and maxillary sensilla largely pertain to the species available outside India.

Both clastogenic and physiological types of chromosomal aberrations were found in bone marrow cells of rat. These ionclude, chromosomal fragmentation, stickiness, chromosomal gaps, centromeric association, end-to-end joining of chromosomes, ring chromosomes, deletions and chromosomal shrinkage.

The pulse rate, respiration rate, and rectal temperature increased with the duration of work and speed of camel was reduced in the similar conditions.

Tilapia mossambica was exposed to sublethan concentration of chromium trioxide, 2,4,6,8 ppm for a period of 24, 48 and 72 hrs and changes in the biochemical contents have been observed. The accumulation of chromium in muscle, liver and kidney was found to be increasing with the increase of exposure period and concentration. The toxicity of heavy matel caused the blood glucose level to decrease with the increase of chromium trioxide concentration and decrease with the increase of exposure period. The glycogen content in muscle and liver was found to decrease with the increase of concentration and decrease with the increase of exposure period. Increase in the lactate dehydrogenase activity in the muscle, liver, kidney was observed with the increase in concentration of the heavy metal, chromium trioxide, and exposure period.

The EM studies reveal the presence fo bacteria, virions of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) and spores of Nosema sp. in the cells of posterior silk gland (PSG). The bacteria are gram-positive, rod-like bacilli with extensively long flagella. They often form a sort of chain in the cells. The virions or capsids of NPV appear as the double rod-shaped structures. The spores of the monosporoblastic microsporidian, Nosema sp. are oval in shape. The cells of the PSG infected with the bacilli show large number of lysosomes and phagocytosomes in close vicinity of a chain of bacilli suggesting the well-defined cellular defence mechanism. Infection of bacteriosis and virosis causes significant reduction in total protein concentration in PSG.

The investigation was undertaken to study the biodiversity of zooplankton in Rakasakoppa reservoir of Belgaum (North Karnatak). A total 27 species belonging to 4 groups have been identified. Rotifera (15 species), cladocera (7 species), copepoda (4 species) and ostracoda (1 species) contributed to zooplankton richness in the reservoir. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that zooplankton groups were positively/negatively correlated with some physical, chemical and biological parameters.

Present study has been carried out on the chromosomal polymorphism in 2 populations of Anopheles stephensi. The chromosomal aberratios recorded include 2 inversions in Jammu population and 3 inversions and 1 translocation in Chandigarh population. In the latter, a centromeric loop has been observed in 2L in addition to inversions in 2R, 3R and 3L and translocation at zone 3 of X-chromosome and 31 of 3R.

Notoptoroides notopteri was described my Majumdar in 1962 whereas Notoptoroides alatae was described by Majumdar in 1965. Both are namatode parasites from fishes. In the year 1953 Khera described Pseudoproleptus vestibulus another nematode parasite from fish. The authors have compared these three nematode species in details and have reasons to consider N.notopteri and N alatae to be synonym of Pseudoproleptus vestibulus.

Frass mediated host finding behaviour of Cotesia flavipes was studied utilizing a T-tube olfactometer. In a no-choice situation C.flavipes females were attracted strongly to the arm containing the larval frass of Chilo partellus. Per cent attraction to the larval frass obtained through feeding different host plants ranged from 75 to 64% and these were not significantly different from all getting attracted to the frass containign arm. Attraction to larval washings was just 35% and significantly different from all getting attracted to the arm. In a paired-choice test, larval frass obtained from feeding on maize was most attractive followed by sorghum and bajra.

The protein pattern in food, excreta and haemolymph of larval stages in experimental conditions (A, B and C) were analyzed qualitatively by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The haemolymph in all twelve-protein bands were recognized; four to six protein bands in the second instar, five to six bands in third instar, six to seven protein bands in fouth instar. Whereas, the maximum protein bands with maximum relative mobility (R_mb( values were recognized in fifth instar larvae. The maximum protein bands were recognized in 14th and 15th days of larval age of mature leaf with their high R_mb values. The food material has been classified according to larval feeding age. The maximum peaks of protein bands observed in 13F and 14F days of fifth instar larvae fed on mature leaf. In case of excreta one to two protein bands were observd in second to fourth instars whereas in fifth instar three protein bands with low R_mb values were recognized. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns in protein of haemolymph, food and excreta makes the point more clear about the protein utilization by larvae. The difference between the fractions of protein in food and excreta shows the utilization pattern of protein in larval stages. In food material the protein fractions increases as leaves mature (tender to medium to mature) but in the excreta only the two or three protein fraction appear from 1 to 17 days of larval period.

The gross anatomical and histological changes in uterus during pregnancy are most important factors for carrying pregnancy. The diameter of gravid horn increased with the advancement of pregnancy in non-descript cow but not in the rate as observed/recorded in descript breeds. The pregnant horn wall thickness decreased with the progress of gestation Upto 71-80 days. After that, the thinning of pregnant horn wall ceased. Certain histological changes occurred in endometrium, myometrium and perimetrium. A number of binucleate giant cells (diplokaryocytes) appear within the epithelial lining. Extensive elongation of caruncular processes and their branching pattern formed to create space for the formation of well-developed cryts of caruncle. Uterine glands became more prominent close to the caruncular area and within the lamina propia.

Attempts were made to ascertain the presence of semiochemicals responsible for aggregation in excreta, body emanations, macerated body extract, and shole body extract of bedbug, Cimex hemipterus using hexane (non-polar), dichloromethene (semi-polar), methanol (polar) and water (highly polar) as solvents for extraction with the objective of finding suitable solvent for extraction. Out of the four solvents, water and methanol extracts of filter papers containing excreta of bedbugs gave very high value of attraction index for aggregation in case of male, female and fifth nymphal instar indicating the presence fo semiochemical responsible for aggregation, while extracts of body volatiles, whole body and macerated body did not elicit positive response. EAG studies of the methanol extracts of the filter paper containing excreta also indicated strong positive response in case fo male and female bedbugs.
