Near-isogenic wheat lines carrying 9 leaf rust resistance genes (Lr19, Lr24, Lr25, Lr26, Lr27, Lr35, Lr36, Lr41, Lr42) in 9 Indian hexaploid wheat genetic background were evaluated for rust resistance and grain yield performance. Leaf rust resistance genes Lr19, Lr24, Lr25, Lr27 were found to be highly resistant both at seedling and adult plant stage, whereas leaf rust resistance gene Lr26 was found to be highly susceptible to most of the rust races tested. Other leaf rust resistance genes, Lr35, Lr41 and Lr42 showed moderate resistance. Leaf rust resistance genes, Lr41 and Lr42 provided a high degree of rust resistance in some near-isogenic lines and moderate degree of resistance in other lines. Expression of high degree of some moderate rust resistance genes in some near-isogenic wheat lines suggest that these genes in combination with already existing genes in the recipient parents might have contributed in exhibiting higher degree of resistance that the donor parents. When compared to treated control, the grain yield in the constituted lines varied; it showed both positive and negative shift in the grain yield. Near-isogenic wheat lines carrying leaf rust resistance genes, Lr19, Lr24, Lr26, Lr36, Lr41 and Lr24 showed grain yield on par with the treated control or exceeding it significantly. Leaf rust resistance gene, Lr27 caused neither yield advantage nor yield depression in any of the near-isogenic wheat lines studied.

Median lethal concentration (LC₅₀ as % a.i) of newly introduced pesticide formulations was determined by bioassay test against Indian forager honey bees, Apis cerana indica Fabricius. The LC₅₀ values for alpha-endosulfan 35 EC, lambda-cyhalothrin 5 EC, beta-cyfluthrin 25 EC, imidacloprid 200 SL, thiamethoxam 25 WG, thiacloprid 240 SC and abamectin 1.8 EC were 0.0389, 0.002, 0.0019, 0.0035, 0.0021, 0.0049 and 0.002%, respectively. These values were less than the LC₅₀ of 0.0439% as estimated for commonly used endosulfan 35% EC formulation. All most all the tested compound showed lethal concentration (LC₅₀) less than their normally used field concentrations, stating them unsafe to forger bees.

RAG an HPRT-deficient cell line, used in production of somatic hybrids, has been evaluated for its chromosome charactertics. The cell line was heteroploid with chromosome number ranging from 61 to 72 (mode=66). The RAG karyotype consisted of 48 normal and 18 constitutive maker chromosome. Normal chtomosome ranged from 0 to 4 cell while marker chromosomes were consistently present in single copy. Because of marked similarity in the chromosome composition from cell to cell, the karytype of RAG could defined clearly.

Heliocopris dominus lays 4 eggs, each being enclosed in a egg pouch which is eccentrically located in a brood ball made from fresh elephant dung. The egg of H. dominus appears to be the largest of insectan eggs yet recorded. The larvae through 3 instars, the first and second instars last two months each. The prolonged development of the third instar takes place in two stages- an actively feeding stage lasting 3 and half months during the later half of the wet season and an aestivating, quiescent stage during the first three months of the dry season. The pupae complete their transformation by the end of the dry season. The adults emerge early in June with the advent of the heavy rains of the South -West Monsoons. There is only one annual generation. As the major agency for the removal and utilization of elephant dung during the rainy season in forests, the Heliocopris beetles play an important role in the proper functioning of their ecosystem.

A study was made in some places of Mizoram in two different seasons to record the mosquitoes prevalent in the state. A total of 54 species of mosquitoes under 10 genera were recorded. Forty-seven species were recorded in the monsoon season and 48 in the pos-monsoon season. Both the primary vectors of malaria, viz. Anopheles dirus and An. minimus were recorded. Potential vectors of dengue and Japanese encephalitis were also detected. An tessellatus, an. splendidus. culex epidesmus, Cx. fuscocephala, Cx. pseudovishnui, Aedes aegypti, Ae. caecus, Ae. vittatus, Ae. nigrostriatus. Armigeres durhami. Toxorhynchites gravelyi, Tripteroides aranoides and Uranotaenia campestris not recorded earlier from this state have been recorded in the survey. Fifteen species reported earlier were seen missing in the survey.

Ten animals were utilized irrespective of breed, age, sex and body weight. (1'' X 1'') of skin samples from head, neck and leg regions were used for preparation of slides and stained by H and E. The Epidermis which consisted of startified squamous epithelium was found to be deep , black and dense in appearance in stained slides. The total thickness of epidermis ranged from 187μ to 244μ. Stratum corneum, the outermost layer, consisted to dead cells without having any cellular architecture and had a thickness of 20μ to 33μ and was more thicker in the neck region. Stratum granulosum containing several layers of flattened cells was present only in the neck region and measured 6.37±15μ in thickness. Stratum lucidum was absent in all the regions but a faint line was detected in the skin of neck region. The stratum basale consisted of all and columner cells. In stratum spinosum, irregular polyhedral hexagonal cells were found. The average thickness of stratum germinativum was 166μ to 203μ and was more in thickness in the neck region. Club shapped, dark coloured papillary processes in measuring 87μ to 156μ were found to be in maximum depth at the neck region.

Ovarian steroid glucuronide is used as sex pheromone by males of 3 sympatrically spawning species of Himalayan trout. Mature of Schizothorax rechardsonii. Schizothorax plagiostomus and Schizothorax sinuatus were exposed to the ovarian odours from ovulated conspecific and heterospecific females. Ovarian odour of each species had a significant priming effect (increased GSI, milt volume, spermatocrit and sperm motility) on conspecific males. Male Schizothorax richardsonii expressing a significant priming response to the ovarian odours from both heterospecific female species is suggesting the lack of species specificity to sex steroids in this fish. The mature males of Schizothorax plagiostomus and Schizothorax sunuatus did not exhibit the priming respose to the ovarian odours of heterospecific females. No performance of the spawning acts by male Schizothorax richardsonii with heterospecific females of conspecific females are present possibly might be strategy to maintain the reproductive isolation in a spawning territory.

Mystus gulio has been exposed to lower (0.35 ppm) and higher (1.05 ppm) concentration of copper. The observed major changes varied for vacuolation in the epithelial cells, shortened and ruptured lamellae, dilation of blood vessels in the gills and pyconotic muclei, vacuolation, empty blood vessels to hepatic lesions with necrosis in liver. Other notable features were the shortened and ruptured villi, necrosis of epithelium and cacuolation in the submucosa of the intestine. More severe damages found in the fishes in the fishes exposed to the higher concentration for 21 days, reflect dose and time dependent toxic nature of copper.

Injury due to the coconut mite, Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) in a coconut plantation rich in vegetative cover was less than that in a plantation without such vegetation. Orange coloured fruits (dwarf) were less susceptible to mite infestation than dark green, light green and yellow nuts. Non-angular (spherical) fruits were less susceptible than angular fruits. The mite injury was lower when the perianth radius was less than 2 cm and the perianth cleft angle (the angle between any two of the inner three overlapping bracts at the clefts) was greater than 136°.

Canthecona furcellata (Wolff.) is predaceous on larvae of Notolophus antiqua Linn. a defoliator of primary tasar food plants. Biology and predation potential of the predator on an alternate host, N. antiqua was studied. The bug, which is multi-voltine in nature, took 49.6 days to complete its life cycle. The total predation potential of different nymphal instars and adult was found to be 23.4 and 72.6 number of third instar larvae respectively. The fecundity of bug was found to be 52.2 eggs. Variation in site of piercing of proboscis was observed to be instar-specific.

Using affinity purified polyclonal antilipophorin antibody, sites of lipophorin synthesis were identified in the visceral fat body, ovary and midgut of adult Dysdercus cingulatus. Lipophorin was detected in the endoplasmic recticulum, Golgi apparatus and small vesicles located in the trans Golgi network region as well. These locations are interpreted as the secretory pathway of nascent lipophorin. Lipophorin associated with the external surface of the superficial and lateral plasma membranes are known to be directly exposed to the haemolymph. This localization pattern suggests the secretion - storage - mobilization pathway and utilization site of lipophorin in D. cingulatus.

The average total losses during the dressing and meat bone ratios of six fish species viz. Catla catla, Labeo rohita, cirrhina marigala, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio and Ctenopharyngodon idella cultured under artificial feed, broiler manure, buffalo manure and N:P:K (25:25:0) has been studied. The dressing percentage was always maximum with C. carpio, followed by c. catla, C. mrigala and H. moltrix. However, the viscera percentage to live body weight was maximum in C. carpio, followed by C. idella, C. mrigala, L. rohita, C. catla and H. molitrix. The comparison of five treatments for the meat: bone ratios showed broiler manure fertilization as the best (27.74) followed by N:P:K artifical feed, buffalow manure and control ponds as 24.73, 23.28, 20.88 and 17.93, receptively. C. idella gave the best meat/bone ratio of 25.46, followed by C. carpio, H. molitrix, C. catla, L. rohita C. mrigala with the ratios of 24.29, 23.04, 22.64, 21.15 and 20..67, respectively. Body density had phenotypic correlations of -0.68 and 0-.65 with dressing percentage in females and males, respectively and was the best measurement for predicting dressing percentage in live fish. The regression equations of dry weight of planktonic biomass upon physico-chemical characteristics of 15 ponds in three replicates under the influence of artificial feed, broiler manure, buffalo manure, N:P:K (25:25:0) and control pond were obtained after one year of experimental period by using stepwise regression method. Water samples from each of the ponds were analyzed daily. However, the average values were calculated on the basis of 15 days' interval designated as fortnight. In artificial feed supplemented pond the regression of average nitrates on dry weight of planktonic biomass expressed 71.7% of the variation of biomass. In broiler manure fertilization pond the regression of total nitrogen on dry weight of planktonic biomass held it responsible for more than 74.6% variation in biomass. While in buffalo's manure fertilized pond more than 82% of the variations in biomass were due to total nitrogen.

ANOVA reveals significant variability on economic traits among the accessions studied. The significant positive correlation was observed between numeric and non-numeric parameters. The five quantitative traits having positive correlation with cocoon colour and cocoon shape were subjected to score the index value based on evaluation index method and 10 top ranked elite silkworm germplasm were selected as best parental materials.

Antifeedant activity of Annona squamosa leaves against crypsiptya coclesalis was investigated in laboratory. Petroleum either and hexane fractions proved best, with over 90% leaf protection. It was followed by benzene, acetone and chloroform. Methanol fraction was least effective. Petroleum ether fraction was tested in concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.8%. Lowest concentration of 0.05% also gave 96% protection to the leaves. Field stability of A. squamosa leaves extracted directly in methanol was also evaluated in field cum lab experiment, and compared with commercially available neem product Amrutguard®. Methanolic extract proved to be at par with Amrutguard® and could provide 57% leaf protection upto one week.

Features engraved on the surface of fish sacale (normal, regenerated and lateral line) have been elaborated using the magnifying potentials of scanning electron microscopy. An attempt has been made to diffine structures that can contribute towards species discrimination among four species of Labeo (L.calbasu, L.rohita, L.gonium and L.bata). Normal scale showed distinctness with regard to focus, region below focus, circuli, lepidonts and chromatophores. Distinct regeneration pattern has been observed for all considered species. Lateral line scales with central canal and associated features have also proved their worth for species characterization.

A new species hampsoni under genus Chionaema has been described and illustrated. This species is closely allied to signa Walker as far as general ground colour, ornamentation of collar, tegula, wing venation and trilobate costal tuft on the forewing are concerned. However, the new species can be easily distinguished on the basis of prominent antemedial and postmedial scarlet bands on forewing and its distinct genitalic structures such as male genitalia with uncus having pointed tip, aedeagus with smooth walls, vesica with densely packed large patches of cornuti and female genitalia with globular corpus bursae, signum missing.

The effectiveness of Livol for growth promotion in Catla (Catla catla), was evaluated through dietary administration of three different dosages (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) for 120 days. Livol-treated groups of fish showed higher weight gain than control. the use of Livol at 0.5% resulted in higher weight gain than rest of the treatments. Feed conversion efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, carcass protein content and RNA/DNA ratio, was high under fish fed 0.5% Livol-supplemented diets. incorporation of Livol at varied levels improved the gut digestive enzyme activity of treated fish.

The effect of ingestion of Nosema sp. spores on growth, weight and mortality of Sitophilus oryzae was measured. At the dose of 4 x 10⁸ spores/larva, 85.3% mortality was recorded after 288 h of infection. The LD₅₀ value was determined as 2.8 x 10⁵ spores/larve at 288 h. At the highest dose a significant degree of weight loss was observed in larvae, pupae and adults. Nosema sp. spores also reduced the growth rate of larvae. Of the various doses ministered, 4.0 x 10⁸ spores/individual proved to be effective. This dose produced a mean spore concentration of 9.72 ± 0.1 x 10⁸ spores/larva.

Opisina arenosella has three accessory glandular organs associated with female reproductive system. The secretion in the bursa copulatrix contains lipids, glycogenous polysaccharides and proteins. Spermathecal gland secretion contains glycogenous polysaccharides and proteins only. Colleterial glands secrete proteins and glycogenous polysaccharides complexed with lipid. The chemical nature of these secretions give evidence of their probable function in the reproductive process.

Fishes Channa straitus and Lepidocephalichthys thermalis maintained separately under complete submerged condition survived for 218.7±57.35 and 1105.7±39.27 minutes respectively. The former fish upon exposure to air at laboratory and at direct sun light conditions survived for 507.5±5.24 and 23.3±4.72 minutes and sustained a total avaporative water loss of 13.27±0.87 and 18.64±2.00% respectively. The respective values for latter fish were 394.8±23.26 and 13.9±2.13 minutes and 38.93±6.63 and 27.26±11.21%. Of the two obligate air-breathing fishes, C.striatus has more efficient air breathing organs than L.thermalis.
