Distribution of the neuro secretory cell types in the various ganglia of the ventral ganglion in general and that of the last abdominal ganglion in particular during the adult life of Philosamia ricini has been studied. On the basis of their size and staining properties, they are distinguishable into 'A and 'B' types. The presence of vacuoles and nature of granules are the basic criteria on which the 'A' cell are further divisible into 'A₁,' and 'A₂' types. The functional significance of this cell has been discussed in relation to reproductive processes in Philosamia ricini in both the sexes. It is found that the 'A' type cells are active in nature in all the adult stages but the activity of B cells is found more active in female. It has also been observed that in the two reproductive stages, the cells of last abdominal ganglion of mating and ovipositing females are more active than that of the mating males.

Searching, drilling and oviposition by the mymarid egg parasitoid, Anagrus flaveolus Waterhouse was studied in laboratory, using eggs of brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal). Observations revealed that oviposition by the female wasp in host eggs embedded inside the plant tissue was accomplished by repeated attempts to drill through the leaf sheath tissue with ovipositor, an act in which the parasitoid achieved success after relentless labour. Therefore, one of the contributory factors affecting the field parasitism of this species appears to be the penetrability of rice leaf sheath.

The Nucleopolyhedrovirus of Galleria mellonella (GmNPV) contains, in addition to the cuboidal occlusion bodies embedded with virions, another diamond shaped inclusion bodies (DSIBs) in the cytoplasm of infected cells, devoid of virions. When the third instar larvae of Mythimna separata were exposed to five varying concentrations of OB's of MsNPV ranging from 2.6 x 10² to 2.6 x 10⁶, OB's/ml along with a constant dose of 2 x 10⁶ DSIBs/ml from G. mellonella NPV; the per cent mortality ranged from 70 to 96 with reduction in incubation period from 7 to 4 days. There was no mortality of the larvae when they were treated with DSIBs alone. The enhancement index (log₁₀) of the virus was found to be 3.33 or reduction of more than 3450 times in LC₅₀.

It has been found that vitamin A clearly blocks the toxic effect of cadmium in Clarias batrachus. Some aspects of vitamin A in counteracting the toxicological effects of cadmium have been discussed.

Experiments were conducted for 300 days to observe the effect of different stocking densities (10,000, 20,000, 30,000 and 40,000/ha) on the water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, ammonia and nitrite) and survival, growth, biochemical composition of flesh (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, moisture and ash) and hematological parameters (heamoglobin, hematocrit, total leucocyle count and total erythrocyle count) of three carps viz. Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala and Cyprinus carpio). No significant difference was observed in the water quality parameters in different stocking densities except ammonia and nitrite contents of water, which were significantly more at higher stocking density. Survival of all the fish species was hundred per cent in all the stocking densities, whereas weight gain was maximum at stocking density of 10,000/ha. The protein, carbohydrate and moisture content of flesh and the levels of various haematological parameters viz. haemoglobin, hematocrit, total erythrocyte count and total leucocyte count were maximum at the lowest stocking density (10, 000/ha).

Acute toxic effects of aflatoxin B1 in day old ducklings were studied. A number of symptoms were observed in treated duckling. The birds lost their body weight as compared to control birds. Postmortem findings indicated that liver appeared enlarged with yellowish colouration. Histopathological examination of liver revealed degenerative changes of hepatic cells. Bile ducts revealed hyper plastic changes, enlarged nucleus, nucleolus and some hyperchoromatism.

Incidences of Bacterial Heamorrhagic Septicaemia were recorded during the months of February, March, April and May, 2004 from lower lake, Bhopal, India. A total of 1,283 fishes were screened. Only two species namely Cyprinus carpio and Ompok bimaculatus were found infected with BHS. The infected fishes exhibited the symptoms such as reddening and haemorrhages in skin, erection of scales, swollen vent, distended abdomen and frayed fins. The intestine was filled with thin yellowish fluid and its inner lining was beset with numerous small whitish blisters. Bacteriological examination revealed the occurrence of gour types of bacteria from skin lesions/haemorrhages and internal organs viz., liver, spleen and gills. The bacteria isolated were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, A. sobria, A. caviae and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Out of four bacteria, A. hydrophila was found to be highly pathogenic while A. sobria is moderate pathogenic and A. caviae and P. fluorescens are observed to be less pathogenic in nature.

The range of food consumed does not differ significantly within the month of the study period (P<62>0.05). The relative abundance of a given prey population altered the diet composition of X. laevis. There was no significant change in mean condition factor with age. Computed values of correlation coefficients of length against weight indicates a highly significant correlation in females (r=0.897) and some level of significance in males (r=0.105).

The preferred breeding period and fecundity of Xenopus laevis sampled from Rockwater fish farm were studied within ten months. The analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) showed peak gonadal activity in August for males (1.51) and November for females (15.0). The number of eggs produced per female organism increases with body mass. Large individuals produced as much as 6,000 eggs. The length-weight correlation coefficients of males (r=0.105) and females (r=0.089) were not significantly different (P>0.05). The influences of temperature and rainfall on the reproductive cycle are also discussed as well as the effect of water depth.

The hepatoprtective activity of 70% ethanolic extract of Celosia argentea Linn. seeds was investigated against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatic damage in rats. Administration of extract (200 and 400 mg/kg b.wt.) orally for 7 days produced significant lowering of serum marker parmeters like AST, ALT, ALP, total bilirubin, and an increase in serum total proteins and albumin. Furthermore, the extract caused a significant reduction in lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and an elevation in antioxidant defense parmeters as compared to CCl4 treated control rats. Thus, the results indicate hepatoprotective activity of C. argentea in CCl4 intoxicated rats.

Macrozoobenthic community of Lake Naukuchiyatal, which has gradually turned eutrophic during the past 30 years, was investigated for the period January, 2000 to December, 2001. Among the 21 species collected during the study, Dipera were numerically most significant whereas in terms of biomass the gastropods dominated the community. Numerically, the most important taxa were: Chironomus plumosus, Glossiphonia weberi, Mesostoma sp., Tubifex tubifex and Dugesia sp. Gravimetrically, the most dominant species included Lymnaea acuminata, Chironomus plumosus, G. weberi, Barbronia weberi and Gyraulus convexiusculus. The community abundance was characterized by a single peak, which coincided with the phytoplankton peak. Both the community abundance and biomass revealed that the macrobenthic fauna was unaffected by eutrophication.

An ecological study on population structure of rodents was carried out in Maynugus, Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. Live trapping in three agricultural grids (each 70x70 m) and one moorland grid of the same size revealed the presence of Mastomys erythroleucus (67.3%), Arvicanthis dembeensis (23.0%) and Mus mahomet (9.3%). Mastomys erythroleucus was the most common rodent in the study area (P<60>0.001). Adults of Mastomys erythroleucus were more during trapping sessions 1 and 3, and young ones were more during trapping session 2. In the case of Arvicanthis demeensis, more adults were trapped than young ones during all trapping sessions. The sex ratio of Mastomys erythroleucus was in favour of males during trapping sessions 1 and 3, and in favour of females during the trapping session 2. In the case of Arvicanthis dembeensis, the sex ratio was in favour of males during trapping session 1, and in favour of females during trapping session 2, whereas it was not significantly different during trapping session 3. Population, density and biomass of rodents were higher in the agricultural grid compred to the moorland grid. Higher rodent density and biomass in agricultural grids were mainly contributed by mastamy erytholecucus. Peak density (81/ha) and maximum biomass (3.193 g/ha) coincided with post-breeding and post-harvest seasons. This indicates the occurrence of peak breeding during the fruiting phase of the cultivated plants.

The other tributaries of the river Chenab are Neeru stream, Kalnei streams, Chatroo stream, Bishleri stream with a number of their tributaries. The study was carried on Bishleri stream by dividing the stream into different stations; for a period of one year from January, 2003 to December, 2003. The study on Bishleri stream has brought on record the occurrence of 31 genera of Entomofauna, either in the form of their larvae, nymphs or adult stages; out of which 7 to Diptera, 6 belong to Ephemeroptera, 5 to Odonata, 4 each to Trichoptera, Piecoptera and Coleoptera and 1 to Hemiptera.

Percentage composition of protein, lipid, carbohydrarte and fatty acid of four species of copepods collected from the inshore waters of Cudalore coastal waters were estimated following standard methodologies. Nutritional quality of live feeds used in aquaculture is an important factor for survival and optimal growth of larvae of finfishes and shellfishes. Copepods are considered to be a valuable source of protein and an alternative ingredient to the more expensive Artemia salina. Of the principal biochemical constitutents, protein formed the major component followed by lipid and carbohydrae. Protein content showed slight variations and ranged between 66.83 and 69.92%. The carbohydrate content varied from 7.31 to 9.20%. Higher accumulatioon of lipids in copepods during phytoplankton blooms could be an adaptative phenomenon and may function as metabolic reserve and insulation layer. The results, in general, supported the view that protein may function as a metabolic reserve in copepods and that the availability of a constant supply of food may reder large amount of lipid storage unnecessary in tropical copepods. The arachidonic acid (15.48%) and DHA (10.74%) contents were found to be maximum in cyclopoid copepod, Oithona rigida compared to other copepods. The amount of neurosecretry material was found to be increasing in cell cytoplasm and the cells are fully packed with neurosecretary material.

Interrelationships of morphometric characters and their significance in the taxonomic raciation and identification of Tor chilinoides (McClelland), a hillstream detritivore fish collected from the river Western Nayar in the Garhwal, Central Himalaya has been presented. It was observed that all the body parts grow in accordance with the total length of the body. The maximum total length of the fish was observed to be 23.6 cm, which is the highest size collected so far in this region. The head length was 20.45 ± 0.71 percent of the total length. Females were larger in size than males. The eyes were situated just ahead of the middle of head length, and the body depth was slightly less than the head length. Regression analyses were made between different dependent and independent variables by using the method of least squares and were tested by the analysis of variance (ANOVA).

The rubber beetle, Luprops curticollis Fairmaire found hiding in large swarms on the wooden roofs of houses during the months of March/April leave the settlements in December for breeding in rubber plantations. Eggs are laid in clusters in decaying leaf litter, especially in rubber estates. There are five larval instars and a short prepupal stage. The adults emerge in February and reach the settlements by the end of this month and stay there till December.

Located between latitude 8° 49' and 9° 17'and longitude 77° 16' and 76°24' E, the Thenmala dam built across the Kallada river has created the Parappar reservoir having the distinction of being one of the recently commissioned river basin project in Kerala. Zooplankton population and net primary productivity studies were underktaken from June 1987 to May 1988. Different genera of Zooplankton noted were Brachionus, Keratella, Lecane, Allodioptomus, Mesocyclops, Calanus, Cypris, Chydorus and Alona. Total zooplankton population was maximum during December (11.90%) and minimum during April (0.63%). Net primary productivity varied from 0.50 gc/m³/day (December) to 3.80 gc/m³/day (April). A significant negative correlation between net primary productivity an zooplankton population observed in the study might be due to grazing.

Earthworm biodiversity survey was done in 52 different sites of Jalore district of Rajasthan. Only 61.5 per cent sites showed earthworm's presence. Total 5 species belonging to 3 different families viz. Megascolecidae [Lampito mauritii Kingberg and Metaphire posthuma (Vaillant)], Ocnerodrilidae (Ocnerodrilus occidentalis Eisen and Genus Malabaria) and Octochaetidae [Dichogaster balaui (Michaelsen)] were recorded during survey. Most earthworm species showed patchy distribution and were present in some restricted habitates. Earthworm species M. posthuma and O. occidentalis appeared as dominant earthworm species during study. The minimum and maximum species density was recorded 212.1 ind.m^-2±52.0 in Malabaria and 26.7 ind.m^-2±3.3 in D.bolaui, respectively. The soils where earthworm occurred exhibited the ranges of 7.3 - 8.9 pH, 20.15 - 30.26°C temperature, 10.39 - 36.73 per cent moisture, 2.69 - 5.26 g kg^-1 organic carbon and 0.26-2.81 g kg¹ nitrogen.

Investigation is an attempt to assess the histopthological changes in Gambusia affinis exposed to different sublethal concentrations of leachate. The work deals with the effects of toxic effluent generated at different textile and printing units at Pali town in Rajasthan State that makes its way to Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) where chemical and biological treatment is done. After treatment, the sludge generated is allowed to dry in drying beds and dumped far from the plant. Due to high porosity of the sandy soil, heavy metal salts and soluble toxic substances would leach and make their way to local Bandi river through sub-soil movement. Therefore, a need was felt to study the ill effects on fish Gambusia affinis by exposing it to 1/1000, 1/500 and 1/100 leachate concentrations. Hepato-pancreas was studied for histopathological damage. The organ showed pathological disintegration that was dose and time dependent. However, hepato-pancreas showed recovery followed by secoundary response.

Total lists of Lepidoptera recorded in Nepal stand at around 650 species of butterflies and 3,950 species of moths. The extent of endemism of Nepal's Lepidoptera is likely to be at least comparable with that noted by Thapa (1998) for the other group of insects i.e. with 15-20% of the species found here described from Nepal. Note that this is only the first stage in considering the question of endemism. The second stage-whether the species occurs outside the area in question in much more problematic. Even if it has not been found there yet, it may still be found to occur there later. This means that it can never be absolutely sure that a certain species is truly endemic to Nepal.

Furosemide drug used for antihypertensive therapy may modify lipoprotein and lipid metabolism. Furosemide is a loop diuretic and can increase lipid, total cholesterol and lipoproteins in serum and tisses. To assess the impact of furosemide on the renal lipid profile in eight week old albino rats, 40 mg/kg body weight dose of furosemide was administered orally 7, 14 and 21 days. Significant increase in total lipid, CHO, HDL, LDL were observed. whereas, TG and VLDL showed significant decline. These changes suggest adverse effects of furosemide on the lipid metabolism and change in lipid and lipoprotein metabolism.

The severity of malaria infection during pregnancy is correlated with the parasitaemic levels, placental infection and foetal abnormalities. Malaria is more severe and frequent in pregnant woman, than in non-pregnant women. Placenta of pregnant Plasmodium berghei infected mice showed alterations on surface of placenta. Trophoblastic membrane of the infected placenta was severely damaged. The bulbous microvillus ends were severely necrosed that resulted in aggregation of trophoblastic membrane. These altered placental surface may be responsible for internal damage of placenta which in turn might be responsible for abnormal foetal developments like pre-term delivery, low body weight of new born, foetal death or abortions in pregnant women.

Fingerlings of Cyprinus carpio were exposed to the lethal concentration (35μl/L) of organophosphate insecticide dimethoate 35%EC, for 1, 2, 3 and 4 days respectively to study the level of ions and whole animal oxygen consumption. Exposed fish showed a significant decrease in the whole animal oxygen consumption due to the respiratory distress as a consequence of the impairment of oxidative metabolism. The ionic content of Na⁺, K⁺ & Ca²⁺ also decreased significantly in gill, liver and muscle tissues of exposed fish, signifying the altered cellular proliferation and deranged Na⁺, K⁺ & Ca²⁺ ionic pump due to probable consequence of tissues damage.

Inter-relationship of 12 species of the genus Puntius Hamilton-Buchanan were investigated based on certain osteological characters. Fishes under study consists of three phylectic groups: sophore, conchonius and sarana. The sophore group is characteristic in having a cranial fontanel; smooth last simple dorsal spine; slender 3+4 infraorbital; eight predorsal vertebrae and less number of vertebrae, and conchonius group, by absence of barbels; cranial fontanel and in having finely serrated last simple dorsal spine; greatly enlarged 3+4 infraorbital; slender pharyngeal bone with pointed dorsal limb. Sarana group consists of larger sized fishes having less body colour markings; presence of two pairs of well-developed barbels; a pair of uroneurals on the dorsal tip of the urostyle; higher total vertebral counts (35-36) and predorsal vertebral counts (10).

Economics of mass production of the nucleopolyhedrovirus of the teak defoliator, Hyblaea puera Cramer (Lepidoptera: Hyblaeidae) (HpNPV) using the laboratory-reared and field-collected (from teak plantations) host larvae was compared. The data were based on 7645 laboratory-reared (LR) larvae and 8925 field-collected (FC) larvae. The virus production was carried out using fifth instar larva inoculated with 1x10⁶ OBs (Viral Occlusion Bodies)/ larva. The virus yield/larva in LR and FC larvae was 4.8x10<6>8 and 3.6x10<6>4 OBs, respectively. The virus productivity ratio in LR and FC larvae was 241 ± and 178 ± 100.85 Obs, respectively. The cost of production of HpNPV per larva was higher in the case of LR (Rs. 0.82/larva) in comparison with FC (Rs. 0.72). However, the cost of HpNPV required for spraying in one hectare at the rate of 1.63 x 10<6>11 OBs worked out to be Rs. 279 and Rs. 317 in the case of LR and FC, respectively. A marginal difference in the virus yield was found affecting the cost of the virus produced.

Infection of varied concentrations of Nosema sp. spore on different larval instars of silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury showed that the first instar larvae were more susceptible to pebrine disease with high mortality (76.50%) and how LC₅₀ (1.3x10⁴). The susceptibility of Nosema sp. decreases with lapse of time in later instars. Dose specific mortality indicated that the larvae of same age were more susceptible to the higher concentration of the Nosema spores.

A key to identify all the seven new species of this genus is also given. The genus Brachypogon kieffer under Tribe Ceratopogonini, Subfamily Ceratopogoninae, referable to a Dipteran family Ceratopogonidae is thus reported for the first time from India.

The comparisons of male genitalia among the three species showed differences in the lateral plate of phallosome (Ventral cornu, median process, basal or lateral arm), paraprocts and gonocoxites. An illustrated account of Anathamna neospermatophaga sp. nov. collected from the Western Himalaya is reported in the communication including description of the wing venation and the male and female genitalia. The species can be diagnosed on the basis of characters of male genitalia, particularly of cucullus being produced into a beak-like structure and having a short and sharply bent aedeagus and the female genitalia having two unequal triangular pyramid-shaped signae. The genus is reported for the first time from India.
