Study takes the first step of documenting butterfly diversity and distribution aling the seasonal gradient and across five landscape elements. Censuses butterfly community in Tamhini, northern Western Ghats, across six seasons and five landscape elements using line transect method for two years. A total of 69 butterfly species belonging to 52 genera and five families were encountered in the study area. The data was analysed for a and β diversity. There were two peaks in the a diversity in summer and early winter. Monsoon fauna was distinctly different from that of other seasons. Maximum diversity was observed in the partially disturbed areas with human habitation. Landscape type satisfying variable niche showed maximum a diversity. The findings in the seasonal and landscape wise distribution of butterflies are important with respect to monitoring animal diversity and defining conservation strategies in the northem Western Ghats.

Protective effects of Azadirachta indica leaf extract on Echis carinatus venom induced rats were investigated. Haematological changes were studied in Albino rats administrated with sub lethal dose (110 μg) of Echis carinatus venom. These rats could survive upto 36 hours. However, the Albino rats administered with both Echis carinatus venom and Neem leaf extract could survive 96 hours and exhibited improved haemogram. Thus by injecting neem leaf extract death postponement was seen in the Albino rats from which it is inferred that the Neem extract has a protective role to play as an antidote for Echis carinatus venom.

The freshwater fish, Channa punctatus was exposed to sublethal concentration (6.61 ppm) of a pesticide. Lihocin for 24 hr, 48 hr, 72hr and 96hr periods. The harmful toxic effects of this chemical were investigated by measuring key enzymes in carbohydrate metabolism viz., phosphogluco isomerase (PGI), phosphofructo kinase (PFK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), fructose-bis phosphatase (FBPase), pyruvate carboxylase (PC), PEP carboxy kinase (PEPCK) glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), phospho gluconate dehydrogenase (PGDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH). Further, the investigation on substrates viz., glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate were also done during the exposure period. The activities of PGI, PFK, G6PDH, PGDH, PC and PEPCK were increased while G6Pase and FBPase were decreased during the exposure period. The levels of glycogen and pyruvate decreased while glucose and the lactate levels increased. From these data it can be concluded that Lihocin has more toxic effects by damaging the tissues at cellular level and lead to modulation of the glycolytic and glucogenic enzymes. The physiological significance of this toxicity is discussed.

Study reports the effects of temperature and relative humidity (RH) on the emergence and production of infective juveniles (IJs) of Heterorhabditis indica, an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) isoalted from forest soil of Meghalaya, India. Larvae of Galleria mellonella were infected by 100 IJs/larva of H. indica at 25°C and 100% RH. The infected dead larvae of G. mellonella were exposed to varying degree of temperature and emergence of IJs was observed at regular time intervals. The IJs could emerge only at 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. The earliest emergence (8 days) of IJs occurred at 25°C. At 85, 96 and 100% RH, the emergence of IJs was observed between 8 to 9 days. At 75% RH, a delay (17 days) in the emergence of IJs was noticed. At 53% RH the cadavers were found severely desiccated and failed to release any IJ. Total production of IJs after 20 days post inoculation was recorded in both the experiments.

Along with this, the variations in acid and alkaline phosphatases levels in blood serum and RBC and WBC counts were also recorded. Study shows progressive decrease of total proteins and glycogen as well as in RBC and WBC count. The alkaline phosatase activity increases with increasing the dose and duration of thiodon treatment. However, acid phosphatase decreases initially but later on show increasing trend.

Identification of the most vulnerable stage of the host is vary necessary for effective mass multiplication of natural enemies in any biological control programme. To identify the best egg age groups of Corcyra cephalonica stainton (Lepidoptera : Galleriidae) for mass multiplication of the egg parasitoids, Trichogramma brasiliensis (Ashmead) Hymenoptera Trichogrammatidae) and T. exiguum pinto, plantner and oatman, eggs of the thirteen age groups were offered for parasitism to both the parasitoids. Host egg age did not bring any change in the thelytokous nature of T. brasiliensis observations made on the biological attributes viz percent parasitism, emergence, percent female emergence, longevity and fecundity of the egg parasitoids revealed that for mass rearing of these two parasitoids 0-24 h old eggs of C. cephalonica would be most suitable.

Breeding biology of Spoonbill and painted Stork has not been documented in detailed in captivity. This inventory unravels some of the aspects of their reproduction in captivity and generates useful baseline data for further studies in detail. The study was conducted in aviary of Sakkarbaug zoo, Junagadh, Gujarat. The alterations in artifical nesting platforms (ANPs), use of supplementary nesting material, behavioural changes of birds in anthropogenic environment and the factors affecting breeding success of both species of birds has beenmonitored an documented. Ample availability of food and lack of predators has positive effects on their breeding success. Changes in dimension of ANP greatly improved the breeding success of Spoonbill. Both male and female birds were seen foraging together often leaving the eggs/chicks along on ANP, contrary to its behaviour in wild.

Study was carried out to investigate the effect of Orange G (monoazophenyl naphthalene dye) on Swiss albino male mice. The animals were fed on diet containing 0.0 (control), 2 and 4 g/kg body weight of Orange G for 21 days as short term and 42 days as long term studies. Haematological examination revealed a decreased haemoglobin content, total erythrocyte count and haematocrit percent and a significant increase in the total leucocyte count at all the dose levels of the dye used. There was a significant increase inthe activities of serum alkaline phosphatase and protein while a decrease in cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose levels in the serum.

A castastrophic `fish kill' took place in Kuwait Bay between 1999 and 2000, specifically to mullet, Liza klunzingeri. Its recurrence in the consecutive years in low profile only in the Bay region and not elsewhere along the Kuwait Coast stimulated us to investigate the causative factors in five important sites of Kuwait Bay. Among various Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), Dinophysis caudata was found predominant in the five sites of the Bay. Trace metal levels in seawater, HABs and L. klunzingeri were higher (8.11 ig l<sup>-1</sup>, 45.14 ig g<sup>-1</sup> and 67.81 ig g<sup>-1</sup>, respectively) during HABs enrichment than during their absence (6.11 ig l<sup>-1</sup> 40.29 ig g<sup>-1</sup> 67.41 ig g<sup>-1</sup>, respectively). Observations revealed high mortality of this species due to high trace metals with low nutrient levels (Phosphate, Nitrate and Silicate), and high ammonia levels during high HABs enrichment. Further, high temperature, turbidity and low dissolved oxygen were found to enhance the HABs in the Bay. These variations can be attributed to pollution from wastewater discharges, anthropogenic sources, rapid industrialization and human activities in the Bay. Furthermore, such `fish kills' may not only recur in the near future but are anticipated to cause (1) direct and indirect harmful effects to fish consumers, in man and (2) economical loss from fishing industry, and hence the investigation.

About 100 species were identified during this study belonging to 40 genera and 20 families of the orders Tylenchida (21 spp.), Aphelenchida (1 sp.), Dorylamida (70 spp.) and Monochida (8 spp.), including 13 species as new records. Their distribution up to district level has also been provided.

Ischiodorylaimus rathori sp.n. is characterised by having 2.67-2.90 mm long body, cuticle marked by 30-32 longitudinal lines, lip region amalgamated marked by depression; odontostyle 39-41 μm; odonotophore 42-44 μm; female reproductive system amphidelphic; tails dissimilar in two sexes; female tail 4.4-5.3 anal body width while male tail 0.65-0.77 anal body width; spicules 65-75 μm long and two groups of ventromedian supplements separated by 3-4 spaced supplements (8+4+9-11+3+10). Dorylaimellus sewaki sp.n. is characteised by having 0.82-0.93 mm long body; lip region distinctly set off by constriction, narrower than adjoining body; odontostyle 6-7 μm long; odontophore 8-9 μm long; female reproductive system amphidelphic; spicules 23 μm long; 5 ventromedian supplements irregularly arranged; tail similar in both sexes 34-35 μm long, arcuate conoid with rounded tip.

Studies on the life table and age specific fecundity of Cervaphis quercus Takahashi were carried out in the laboratory (27.46±0.41°C temperature and 48.96±0.40% relative humidity) on oak plant Quercus serrata Thunberg. The net reproductive rate of the aphid as worked out as 24.02 females/female/generation. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) were determined as 0.244 and 1.276 females/female/day respectively. The population comprised mainly of nymphs (92.21%) on reaching the stable age distribution. In addition, the life expectancy (ex) of C. quercus was found to decline gradually with advancement of age.

Young adult mice (Age 45 days) were exposed to Paraquet (20mg/Kg BW, intra peritoneally) for 10 days develop selective neurodegeneration in the hippocampal region of the brain. Light microscopic cresyl violet staining of the serial paraffin sections passing through hippocampal region demonstrate 90% loss of neuron cell bodies in CA3 region. Neurodegenerative changes were characterized as pyknotic nuclei, peripheral and central chromoatolysis, shrinkage, vacuoles in cytoplasm and loss of stainable material. Study thus demonstrates specific and selective neurodegenerative effect of weedicide paraquet on hippocampal neuron cell bodies. Observation of other brain areas such as cerebral cortex, substantantia nigra, hippocampus and amygdaloid area did not show any neurodegeneration.

Batasio niger sp. nov. is described from Khujailok River, a tributary of Yu River beloning to the Chindwin-Irrawaddy basin in Manipur, India. The new species differs from its congeners (except B. elongatus and B. dayi) in having a black oblique predorsal bar on dark gray to blackish plain body. This species is distinguishable from its closest congeners B. elongatus in having shorter adipose fin base (20.1-27.9% SL vs. 29.4-35.1), prepectoral length (17.8-23.5% Sl vs. 23.7-27.8), snout length (35.2-39.7% SL vs. 39.7-44) and relatively deeper body at anus (18.4-24.8% SL vs. 15.8-19.3); from B. dayi in having wider interorbital distance (29.5-35.3% HL vs. 25.9-28.6); and from B. tengana in having stouter body (18.4-24.8% SL vs. 16.4) and more widely-set eyes (interorbital distance 29.5-35.3% HL vs. 22.2).

An illustrated key to 26 subfamilies and 41 tribes of leafhoppers from the Indian subcontinent is given. A total of 1350 species under 340 genera known from the Indian subcontinent and their distribution under each of the subfamily is also presented.

The bacterial counts were found higher in branchial region than in the body surface region of the host fish species and also higher in A. sirm than I. melastoma.

018788   Usha Srinivasan I (Dep of Zool, Malabar Christian Coll, Calicut 673 001) : Effect of carbofuran on haemolymph proteins of Spodoptera mauritia. J Ecobiol 2006, 18(1), 79-83.

Biochemical effects of carbofuran on proteins of the haemolymph of the final insta larva of Spodopera mauritia were studied using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Protein fractions were compared with the corresponding fractions of the control larvae. The results showed that size of the fractions and also intensity of staining reaction of the bands were dissimilar. The protein brands of the haemolymph of the treated larvae showed less intense staining compared to the corresponding bands of the control larvae. There are 13 fractions and protein bands were numbered according to their mobility with band 1 showing the greatest mobility, while band 13 showed the least mobility. In the treated samples, bands 7,8,9,10,12 and 13 disappeared at 24 hours but reappeared after 72 hours; the bands 8 and 10 reappeared at 48 h itself. The findings revealed that fraction 7 may be involved in molting. Fractions 9, 12 and 13 may have been affected by carbofuran toxicity during 24 hours.

Jagatunga Samudra Reservoir is one of the ancient, historical, artificial, water, bodies of Kandhar town, Dist Nanded (M.S.) and used for irrigation wading, washing as well as for pisciculture by the villagers. Data pertaining to distribution pattern and diversity of zooplankton has been presented. Monthly variation in the abundance of Zooplankton, during the study period from February 1998 to January 1999 were described. Detailed microscopic examination of zooplankton under compound binocular microscope has carried out and revealed that there were total 4 groups consisting of twelve genera of zooplankton in the sample thorough out the study period, among the zooplankton observed 3 genera belongs to copepoda, 5 genera belong to cladocera, 3 genera belong to Rotifera and 1 genera from Ostracoda. The zooplankton population in reservoir show higher magnitude during winter season and the lower magnitude during summer season.

Tissue such as haemolymph, hepatopancreas and testis were tested for organic contents and all the tissues showed fluctuatios in their contents due to octopamine, dopamine and fenfluramine treatments.

Avian fauna from the mangroves and surrounding areas of Bhatye estuary, Ratnagiri was studied from March-2004 to February-2005. The species diversity and density of birds in and around mangroves, mudflats and riverside of Bhatye estuary (73° 15' East and 16° 51' North) was studied at regular intervals. Exposed mudflats at ebb tide, served as ideal feeding grounds for winter visitors, like Little Stint, Common Sandpiper, Plovers, Egrets etc., Mud flats were separated by thin water currents and bordered by dense mangroves like Avicennia marina, A. officinalis etc and reclaimed land. At few places thick mangrove patches were seen as islands. The mudflats and nearby areas inhabit all most 9 orders, 18 families and 34 genera of birds. Members of families Ardeidae, Phalacrocoracidae, Charadriidae, and Scolopacidae showed dominance over other families may be due to their adaptability to estuarine climatic condition. Little Cormorant, Little Egret, Median Egret, Western Reef-egret, Cattle egret, Black Bittern, Red-wattled Lapwing, Common Sandpiper, Small Blue Kingfisher, White breasted Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Black kite were the most commonly occurring birds in the study area. Maximum diversity was observed in the months of November and December-2004. Study will contribute in providing baseline data, for planning effective management to study bird diversity and also provide clues for developing this estuary as an ecotourism centre. Further, studies on their relation with other biotic factors will be useful in understanding their ecology.

Both the pesticides had adverse effect on growth and feed conversion efficiency of Catla with the effect being more pronounced in case of deltamethrin.

Bombay duck fish, Harpodon nehereus is a protein rich food which people of Bangladesh like to eat sun dried form instead of raw. In Bangladesh, an age old method is traditional sun drying method. In this method fish is dried improperly and contaminated with insect, fly larvae and dust, results in loss of its quality. But after it is sun dried by fish processors, maintaining its quality is a problem due to variation in humidity and temperature at the time of storage and marketing during a whole year. Therefore, a study was carried out to determine the rate of spoilage at storage condition during different months of the year. The total viable bacterial counts (TVBC), total coliform counts (TCC), total volatile nitrogen base (TVNB), moisture content (M) and DDT ranged between 10₅-10₇ cfu/g, 10₂-10₅ cfu/g, 250-313 mg/100 g, 16-30% and 0.088-0.089 mg/kg, respectively. Among these five sets of quality parameters, the greatest variation was observed in the load of TVBC followed by TVNB, coliforms load, moisture content and DDT concentration. A direct relationship between TVBC, TVNB and M, and atmospheric temperature and humidity was noticed in the flesh of dry fish. The presence of faecal coliforms and DDT in fish indicated its poor quality.

The species of the ichneumonid genus Isotima Foerster occurring in Kerala is reviewed. Two new species viz., I. anupama sp. nov. and I. rakela sp. nov. are illustrated and described. Their affinities with their closest relatives are discussed. I. rufithorax (Szepligeti) is newly recorded from Kerala. The larvae of Hyblaea puera (Cramer) is a new host record for I. pusilla (Szepligeti). A. key to the Oriental species of Isotima Foerster is also provided.

Rapid industrialization and anthropogenic activities have led to severe pollution in Ennore and its surrounding areas. Meiofauna being good indicators of environmental stress is used as a tool to study the effects of different types of pollution in two different stations from intertidal zone and two from Buckingham Canal. The result indicates that overall 9 meiofaunal groups were present in the study area. Nematodes and polychaetes were most abundant and one of the widely distributed groups. The population density of meiofauna depends on several factors such as light, DO, food, salinity, depth, etc. From the results it is clearly evident that stations in Buckingham Canal are poor in meofaunal density owing to greater pollution stress prevailing at these stations when compared to the stations in the coastal side.

Phytoplankton study was carried out in river Goutami-Godavari from July 2004 to June 2005. Chlorophyceae was the most dominant class of the phytoplankton of river Goutami-Godavari, Yanam and it contributed in total phytoplankton density. The class was represented by 23 genera and Cosmarium was dominating order. A maximum of Chlorophyceae population was observed in the month of May 2005. It was followed by drastic fall in density immediately in next month June 2005. Cosmarium sps. was observed to be the consistent and dominant genera followed by Scenedesmus and Chroococcus. It is attributed towards a high correlation with temperature, light penetration, dissolved oxygen and total alkalinity.

Effects of eyestalk ablation on moult and reproduction in males of Metopograpsus messor have been investigated and bilateral eyestalk extirpation resulted in simultaneous acceleration of spermatogonial proliferation and somatic growth. Within five days after the ablation, the percentage of primary spermatogonia (15.4%), secondary spermatogonia (20.4%) and primary spermatocytes (21.6%) has increased significantly in the de-eyestalked individuals compared to those of the controls. The total protein and polysaccharide fraction of the vasal contents have increased significantly (p<60>0.05) in the experimental individuals. Simultaneously, all the experimental M. messor entered premoult stage.
