Animals were observed for physiological responses, mortality, food and water intake and body weight changes.

The acute (96 h) effects on exposure to sublethal and lethal concentrations of synthetic pyrethroids, Fenvalerate 20 EC and Cypermethrine 25 EC were studied by a static bioassay method, on Indian major carp Labeo rohita. The sublethal concentrations of Fenvalerate and Cypermethrine were 2.7 ppb and 3 ppb respectively while lethal concetrations were 4.8 ppb and 5 ppb respectively. The investigatons were concentrated on activity of digestive enzymes in intestinal bulb and intestine of treated fish. The results showed decrease in activity of enzymes in both sublethal and lethal concentrations of the synthetic pyrethroids.

Embodies the study of furcal length and body weight relationship in economically important and abundantly found fishes from lentic water body i.e. Mansarovar reservoir, Bhopal. The high values of coefficient of correlation "r" (between 0.9401 to 0.9954) showed a strong positive correlation between length and weight in all cases, revealed that applicability of equation derived is high. The results obtained revealed that Clarias batrachus (n = 3.1151) were most conductive for Mansarovar reservoir, because only this fish should the `n' value more than 3. The value of Labeo fimbriatus (n = 2.6157 and Labeo bata (n = 2.2500) showed slight decreases in growth constant while ret of the fishes Notopterus notopterus (n = 1.4177), Mystus seenghala (n = 1.9197), Labeo calbasu (n = 1.3405) and Puntius sarana (n = 1.1214) had quite low values. The factors responsible for decrease in growth constant are dietary, topography, taxonomic and water quality of the lakes.

As a part of investigation leading to bio prospecting the diversity of the edible bivalve shell fishes, the coastal area of Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra state was surveyed for. During this, 15 localities were visited covering five coastal talukas of Ratnagiri district viz. Mandangad, Dapoli, Guhagar, Ratnagiri and Rajapur. The bivalves selected for survey are green mussel Perna viridis, oysters Crassostrea cattuakensis, Saccostrea cucullata and the clams Meretrix meretrix, and Katylesia opima. The topography, physiography, pollution, over fishing and other human activities at different areas are found to have considerable impact on the distribution of the bivalves and the survival of their habitats. Seasonalvariation in the population density of the selected species were studied.

Green mussels Perna viridis of different lengths, 55-70, 80-100, 100-120 mm from lower shore of Bhatye creek, ratnagiri were exposed to air in the month of May to know effect of atmospheric exposure on survival time, heart rates and shell valve gaping. Virtually mussels kept their valves at least partly open (1-2 mm) during early stage of air exposure (2 hrs.), and at no stage were there more individuals with closed than open valves. Survivorship in air with LT50 value was 44 hrs for small size in comparison to the 56 hrs obtained for large sized. Bradicardia (<60> 15 beats/min) was induced in most mussels by 10 hrs. in small, 08 hrs. in medium and 04 hrs in large mussels. Air exposure caused much stronger tendency in large than small ones to close shell valves and more rapid induction of reduced heart rate (Bradycardia, 15 beats/min) occurred. Mussels rapidly recovered on return to normal seawater. Large mussels showed average about 3 mm gap between the valves for first 4 hrs. air exposure, while small ones showed average of 1 to 2 mm gap for first 6 hrs. The results are discussed on the mussel physiology

The study on efficacy of organic amendments and cultural practice against cotton stem weevil revealed that basal applications of FYM @ 12.5 t/ha and neem cake @ 250 kg/ha with earthing up at 25 days after sowing (DAS) reduced the stem weevil incidence most effectively, followed by soil application of carbofuran 3 G @ 30 kg/ha and basal application of neem cake @ 250 kg/ha with earthing up at 25 DAS. Highest yield an maximum gross income (Rs. 16,910/ha) were obtained in basal applications of FYM and neem cake with earthing up at 25 DAS, followed by soil application of carbofuran 3 G with Rs. 16,397. Though, these treatments registered higher gross incomes, the incremental cost benefit ratios (ICBR)were comparatively low due to higher cost incurred on the treatment. Highest ICBR (1:3.95) was recorded in basal application of neem cake @ 250 kg/ha, followed by one per cent neem oil drenchig (1:3.95) was recorded in basal application of neem cake @ 250 kg/ha, followed by one per cent neem oil drenching (1:3.32), soil application of carbofuran 3 G @ 30 kg/ha (1:2.60) and earthing up at 25 DAS (1:2.58).

Bioaccumulation of lead in the fish, Oreochromis mossambicus, was investigated after exposure to sublethal concentration of lead acetate for 14 days. Maximum level of accumulation of lead in the gill and liver tissues were observed at the end of 14 days of exposure period. It is clear that lead is accumulated primarily in the tissues of major organs like gill and liver of Oreochromismossambicus exposed to sublethal concentration of lead acetate. The results of investigation indicated that the rate of accumulation of lead was found to be time dependent.

Dimethoate is commonly used organophosphorous group of insecticide. The exposure of different mammalian species including humans to this compound is well documented. The effect of low to moderate levels of repeated exposures of adult mice only to dimethoate have been examined on total leucocyte (TLC) in order to avoid hormonal interference associated with oestrous cycle in female mice. Male swiss aslbino mice in 3-4 months of age group were administered four oral dosages of dimethoate (1, 5, 10, and 20 ppm) in different group everyday for 60 days. Treated and untreated control animals were sacrificed on 5, 10, 15, 30, 45 and 60th days of treatments. TLC in blood samples from both control and experimental groups were analyzed. Dimethoate treatments significantly increased TLC, which was dependent upon dose and the duration of the treatments. A dose of 10 ppm optimally effective in inducing significant chagne in TLC. The increase in TLC and the dose of dimethoate were positively correlated.

Native strains of entomiopathogenic nematodes were tested for their virulence against common cutworm, Spodoptera litura. Of the six isolates of H . indica (TNAU-EPN-Hi 1 to 6), three native isolates of S. siamkayai (TNAU-EPN-St 1 to 3) and S. glaseri (TNAU-EPN-Sg). H. indica isolate TNAU-EPN-Hi-3 was highly virulent against S. litura (LC₅₀-3.53/IJ/larva) and caused 50 per cent morality of S. litura larvae in a minimum time of 34.52 h. TNAU-EPN-St-1 recorded the least virulence of all the isolates (LC₅₀ of 5.57 IJ/larva:LT₅₀ as 45.23 h/larva).

Studies were conducte to assess the influence of moisture on host mortality, penetration, time taken for emergence and number of IJ emerged of entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis indica and Steinemema glaseri) from the host Corcyra cephalonica. The results revealed that maximum mortality of 100 per cent was observed under 100 per cent moisture level for H. indica and 70 per cent moisture level for S. glaseri. The highest number of IJ of H. indica (18.10 IJ/larva) and S. glaseri (11.10 IJ/larva) were penetrated at 100 and 70 percent moisture levels respectively. The earliest emergence of IJ was observed t 6.8 and 4.2 days for H. indica and S. glaseri respectively at the moisture levels 100 and 70 to 90 percent respectively. Both the species were able to multiply on C. cephalonica at moisture levels ranging from 30-100 per cent.

Influence of temperature on host mortality, penetration of infective juveniles (IJ), time taken for IJ emergence and multiplication of entomopathogenic nematodes viz., Heterorhabditis indica and Steinememe glaseri was studied at 20, 25, 30 and 35°C. The results revealed that both the nematodes caused mortality of Corcyra cephalonica at all the temperatures tested. The optimum temperature for highest mortality of C. cephalonica was 30 and 35°C for H. indica and 25°C for S. glaseri. The highest number of IJ of H. indica and S. glaseri penetrated the host at 30 and 25°C respectively. The earliest emergence and the highest number of IJ of both the nematodes after the completion of life cycle inside the host was observed at 30°C.

The influence fo temperature on the sexs ratio of Telenomus sp. was studied by exposing the eggs of Spodoptera litura for varying periods (2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours) at different temperatures (27 - 36°C). Freshly laid eggs (0-2 hours old) were offered to the parasitoid in the ratio of 5:1 at the varying temperatures and exposure periods. The ratio of female to male was higher (1.92:1 to 2.58:1) at temperatures of 27 -32°C, irrespective of the dexposure time of the eggs to the parasitoid., while temperature <62> 34°C altered the sex ratio in favour of males (1:13.3 to 1:1.75). Temperature of 27°C with an exposure period of 24 hours provided for an optimum sex ratio skewed towards the females (2.58:1). The shift in the sex ratio towards males at higher temperatures had a negative impact on the perpetuation of the parasitoid.

Soil and root samples were collected from the rhizosphere of groundnut from 51 localities in namakkal district, processed and analysed. The results revealed the presence of eight nematode species belong to several genera. The occurrence of Criconemoides curvatum, Helicotylenchus dihystera, Hoplolaimus seinhorsti and Tylenchorhynchus brevilineatus. In soil samples. Pratylenchus zeae, Meloidogyne arenaria, M. incognita and rotylenchulus reniformis in root samples were observed. P. Zea was found most frequently with an absolute frequency of 67per cent. M. incognita recorded the prominence value of 34.50 and 21.80 in soil and rot respectively followed by M. arenaria.

Investigation was undertaken to find out the occurrence of various bacterial, fungus and omni feeding soil borne nematodes in the forest areas of Western Ghats region Tamil Nadu. Soil samples were collected from 15 locations of Western Ghats region of Tamil Nadu. Soil samples were collected from 15 locations of Western Ghats region of Tamil Nadu. A total of 11 nematode genera were recorded. Out of which five nematodes viz., Rhabditis, Plectus, Butlerius, Acrobeloides and Acrobeloides and Acrobeles are bacterial feeders. The fungal feeders are viz., Ditylenchus, Tylenchus, Aphelenchus and Tylencholaimus. Two nematodes of both bacterial and fungal feeding (omnifeeder) viz. Eudorylaimus and Dorylaimus are recorded. Rhabditis was found to be in high number (41.11) with 98.46% absolute frequency in all the areas surveyed. The prominence and importance values for Rhabditis was 40.79 and 28.93 respectively followed by Butlerius i.e. prominence value, 16.09 and importance value, 12.08.

Nematicidal property of aqueous leaves and roots extracts of Allium sativum, Brassica campestris, Capsicum frutescene and Trigonella foenum-graecum on mortality of juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita was tested under laboratory condition by taking six doses, S, S/2, S/4, S/10, S/20, and S/100. All the leaves extracts of tested plants showed nematicidal activity but leaf extract of A. sativum and B. campestris found to be most effective, as they recorded 42.06% & 40.61% mortality with lowest doses at 72 hr exposure. C. frutescene and T. foenum-graecum were least effective as their lowest doses exhibited only 4.11% and 2.80% mortality respectively. For the roots extracts, the highest mortality 100% were recorded after 72 hr of exposure at stock dose only in B. campestris none of other plants showed 100% nematicidal properties. Thus, leaves extracts were reported to be more most toxic than extracts of roots.

In vitro experiment was conducted to evaluate the nematicidal potentialities of the effluent of Indian Wood Products (IWP) and Coca Cola Factory (Vrandavan Beverages) with known nematicide triazophos against J_{2 of M. incognits. Stock solution (S) of IWP effluent was found to be the most effective as it showed 100% J2 mortality while Coca Cola Factory effluent has 93.93% mortality with S/2 conc. after 72 hours. All the concentrations of triazophos (S, S/2, S/4, S/8, S/16, S/32) has shown 100% mortality of J2 of M. incognita after 72 hours whereas minimum per cent mortality, 75.27% had been shown by S concentration after 24 hours.}

Amongst several means of controlling root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), use of various medicinal plants for their management proved out to be the best since many years. Therefore, aqueous extract of few medicinal plants viz. Ricinus communis (castor), Cannabis sativa (bhang) and Ipomoea fistulosa. (besharam) were tested agains second stage juveniles during in vitro studies. After 72 hours, with stock 100%, 95.69%, 94.87% mortality was found by aqueous extract of Ricinus communis (fruits), Cannabis sativa (leaves), Ipomoea fistulosa (leaves) respectively.

Results of two extensive field surveys, including local interactions and interviews revealed that the following 32 species of mammals, under 29 general 16 families and 7 orders have been sighted and/or recorded from Johar (Gori) valley. A systematic account of these 32 species of mammals along with their common name, first reference, type locality, and distribution in India has been given. Sightings/locality record for each speciesin the Johar valley and conservation status of threatened species has also been dealt. The systematic account is followed after Wilson and Reeder (1992) and Alfred et al. (2002).

A dorylaim predator, Aporcelaimellus nivalis to study and analyse its prey searching behaviour using nematodes second stage juvenile of root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica as prey. The prey searching and attraction mechanisms of A. nivalis were classified into six phases depending upon attraction diffusing gradient (ADG), minimum perceptible attraction gradient (MPAG) of prey kairomones, minimum response threshold (MRT) and chemotactic response threshold (CRT) of predators. The six phases viz., 1) random movement; 2) exploration and probing; 3) perception of attractant; 4) switched response; 5) co-ordinated locomotion and 6) chemotactic response of predators appeared to have depending upon ADG, MPAG, MRT, CRT, besides other physical, chemical and behavioural prey cues. Prey searching behaviour of A. nivalis might be attributed to the inert behavious of predators, their preference for prey nematodes, chemical concentration, composition and quantity of prey kairomones/attractants.

Insects of terrestrial origin belonging to 11 different orders were trapped over different sectors of Indian ocean between March 1995 to April 1996. Area-wise trappings totalled 2301 for North Arabian Sea (NAS), 3217 for Equatorial Indian Ocean (EIO) and 16, 429 for Bay of Bengal (BOB). The trappings belonged to 104 families (including unidentified family/families of Microlepidoptera), out of which 32 were present in all three sectors, 11 were found in BOB and EIO, 4 were represented in catches over NAS and EIO, 5 were trapped in NAS and BOB, 6 were found only NAS, 5 only over EIO and 41 were found only in BOB. In addition, a total of 142 insects of terrestrial origin were recovered as part of flotsam from surface waters in three sectors (55 in NAS, 27 in EIO and 60 in BOB).

Small man-made wetland of ca. 2 km² in Roper district (ca. 70 km from Chandigarh on Una road) of Punjab attracts every winter a combined peak winter population of nearly 10,000 waterbirds, 70% of which is constituted by the members of Anatidae. Random observations were made from January 2002 to February 2004. A total of 41 species of waterbirds belonging to 30 genera and 12 families were recorded, including two Globally Threatened species, viz., Painted Stork and Black-bellied Tern listed under Near Threatened category. Out of 41 species, 22 are resident, 18 winter visitor and one summer/monsoon visitor. Frequency of sightings indicate that 13 species were very common, 17 common, and 11 uncommon. Direct counts indicated that the members of family Anatidae (Ducks and Geese) excelled in both species diversity (13 species) as well as in numbers (more than 7,000 birds), A comparison with two Ramsar Sites of the region revealed that 36 out of 54 waterfowl species occurring at Pond Dam Lake (66.6%), and 38 out of 68 species occurring at Ropar wetland (55.8%) are common with this wetland.

Based on the presence or absence of external sex characters in females or males sexing was carried out in Spodoptera litura (F.), Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), Corcyra cephalonica (St.) and Plutella xylostella (L.), during their larval stage. Accuracy of larval sexing has been more than 90% in all species. Applications of larval sexing for practical mass multiplication of NPV of S. litura using preferably the female larvae has been discussed.

Oral administration of aflatoxin contaminated diet (7.5 mg/kg) to young adult New Zealand strain of rabbits for 90 days caused significant reduction in body weight and reduction in weight of kidney but slight increased relative weight of kidney. Reduction in glycogen (p<60>0.001) and protein (p<60>0.05) contents were followed with elevation in lipid while sodium, calcium and inorganic phosphorus concentration were increasaed but potassium and magnesium concentration were decreased in the kidney of rabbits. Ionic imbalance with resepct to sodium/potassium and calcium/magnesium were also recorded.

Trends in the distribution of the 102 known Indian species of centipedes of the Order Scolopendromorpha has been discussed. All the species tabulated show their type localities, distribution in various biogeographic zones in India viz., Indo-Gangetic, Himalayan (North-Western, Western, Central and Eastern Himalayas), Arid region, Western Ghats, Coastal regions etc. and their corresponding pattern of distribution in Oriental region (Indian, Indo-Australian, Indo-Malayan and Sri Lankan region), Palaearctic, Ethiopian, Australian, Nearctic and Neotropical region. Nearly 76.5% of the species recorded from India have their homes in the Oriental region, out of which 65 species have their type localites in India only. The type locality of 13 species is not known, 2 species are of Australian region, one Nearctic while two have their type localities in the Ethiopian region. In India, 35 species are from Indo-Gangetic plains, 43 species from Western Himalayas, 15 species from Central Himalayas, 26 species from Eastern Himalayas, 11 species each belong to the Arid and coastal zones of India, 13 species are from Western Ghats and 68 from Deccan. There are only 10 species from India that are known from Palaearctic region, 17 from Ethiopian region, 8 from Australian Region, and 7 and 4 respectively from Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. The two hotspots of India that carry the maximum faunal representation as well as the maximum endemism are Western Ghats (including Deccan) and Eastern Himalaya.
